Please feel free to come and go. The rules from the previous thread apply here. You can seamlessly pick up your conversations from the previous thread and continue them here. Please continue to tag your posting partners as you do.

YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR STATS! Many of you have probably leveled from the previous thread, so make sure you incorporate that any other bonuses in your updated stats.

Also, have fun!

With a swish of his quill, Baldur marked out the last results of round one into his book. He flipped through, writing down the names of all the winners in a nice easy list so that he could make his announcement. Suddenly, he noted @Snow was next to him, handing him another cup of tea and he gave her a bewildered, exhausted smile as he raised it to his lips and took a sip.

"Thank you, Snow-chan, I don't know what I'd do without you."

Slowly, Baldur pushed himself up from the small table and shook his legs out to get the imaginary blood flow moving again. Sitting like that didn't actually restrict the arteries in his legs, since he had none, but it was so ingrained in his mind from real life, that even the phantom pains of his mind were real in some situations. He had not grown up with it quite like someone truly Japanese would have, but he was also a much larger man, and put more weight on his legs... in the real world.

The gaijin samurai clapped his hands loudly three times for attention, before addressing the fighters and the guests.

"Thank you all for your patience while I organized everything. First off, I would like to thank everyone for participating, win, lose, or observe. As I said in the beginning, this is about forging bonds and shared memories. All of the fighters should be proud of themselves. This is an odd format, particularly for those of us who are so reliant on AI opponents and fighting with the enhancements of the system. Not only is it an entirely different combat style, but it effects us in subtle ways we don't even consider until we have to do without them. No one should feel ashamed at their performance, but instead it is my home that these friendly matches instead have introduced you to someone who has a different set of experiences, strengths, and styles. I hope you all take the chance to get to know your opponents if you didn't already."

He leaned down and picked up the cluster of pages, holding them up for him to read.

"Without further ado, I would like to announce our winners:

Quote

In Match 1: Nari vs Jomei - Nari came out victorious!
In Match 2: Koga vs Alkor -  wait... is that right? It must be a different Alkor... - Alkor won!
In Match 3: Night vs Macradon - Night was victorious!
In Match 4: Lessa vs Yona - Lessa emerged with the win!
In Match 5: Astreya vs Freyd - Astreya took the win!
In Match 6: Morningstar vs Hirru - Morningstar won the round!
In Match 7: Calrex vs Astralin - Astralin beat my kohai!
In Match 8: Morgenstern vs Arabella - Jon took the match!
In Match 9: Bismuth vs Zandra - Bismuth came out on top!

"I will give everyone a few minutes break for refreshments, but then if the winners would please come to me for the next rounds assignments. As a reminder, after today's tournament matches, we'll have a social hour with more food and drinks. I hope people stay around as sunset on the island is truely special. The Final two matches of the tournament will take place tomorrow, and then allow for clean-up and set-up for the most romantic dinner in the history of Aincrad... I hope." He gave a friendly, almost nervous smile to those who could see him.

With his announcement made, Baldur set the papers down and begin to figure out how he could fit an odd number of people into the new round, as he idly sipped on his cup of tea. He had a few thoughts, but he would have to speak with the winners to figure it out.

His return to the tournament area was met with announcements. Baldur began to read through the winners, and Alkor winced as he heard the commentary attached to his name. It seemed there were still people who remembered, or at least, people who cared enough to remember. He much preferred the idea that his name would return to insignificance, and that his survival would be a painful memory to as few players as possible. Nonetheless, he continued to walk on the outskirts of the group, sizing up the group. His preliminary assessment was as useful as the updated one. He still did not know anymore. He froze when someone said his name in the group of players nearest Koga, not far from where he was standing.

Quote

"Like, look out Alkor!"

Was... was that a valley girl? His gaze snapped toward the speaker, a woman he did not know, boisterous and brimming with energy to rival the rest of the crowd by herself. He thought he'd heard his name before, but this time there was no mistaking it. Was this woman going to be his next match? It seemed like the logical conclusion to draw, given that he did not know the name of his next opponent yet, and that she had singled him out of the many entrants. He took a few quiet steps toward the group as they continued to converse, careful not to interrupt their conversation prematurely.

Once they reached a point where he felt it might not be rude, he leaned in and glanced between @Koga, @NIGHT, and finally toward @Astreya, the woman who spoken his name.

"...and what should I be looking out for?" he asked, genuinely curious.

Hirru was still sitting out back from the dojo, still fishing as everyone seemed to be starting the second round of the tournament.  He figured everyone was still watching the action, when a second line plopped down into the water a few meters from his own.  The voice was far to familiar for him to not notice.  Hirru smiled weakly as the Whisper in the Shadows would talk.  He seemed to start with a bit about why the hunter was in a gathering of players, but not really with them all.  Hirru shook his head.

"Well, I do live here, so it's kind of hard to not be around when a tournament is in the works.  Though, I did say I would help get it going.  I didn't know I was going to be apart of it though."

He would tug at the line a bit to make sure that something would catch soon.  Hirru was surprised to find himself on the list of combatants, and it seemed to help a bit to use a weapon properly for a bit.  His shoulders slumped as he thought more on the matter.  He just thought that he was really just a puppet of the system, if he could not win something like that without skills.  Though, maybe it was a bit more now.  Hirru was a healer now, which meant that he didn't need to use a blade anymore, but it was such a drastic change.  He wasn't used to not having a sword on his hip, anymore.

"I guess.. I'm just anxious about not being a proper hunter anymore.  It's been my whole life in his world, and it's just an off feeling to not use a proper blade.  I got that feeling back with that little bout with Morningstar.  It felt good, but it only reminded me that I'm not there anymore."

The Whisper would then talk about the events of the boss fight, saying it took quite a bit of courage to do what he did.  Hirru had once again tried to spare a boss, but this time he tried to convince those around him, rather than just do it.  The situation seemed to get worse and worse as time went on, and at some point; he nearly snapped.

"I still don't know why.  Both times now, I've done something that seemed to spare something that didn't need it.  Each time, I've done it without much thought for the reason.  This last one nearly went south very quickly.  Though, I do thank you and Mac.  They were exactly what I needed to hear, at that point."

Hirru pulled on the line once more to keep his mind away from the things that would weigh heavy on him.  What weighed on him instead, was a sudden hard pull on the line again.

"This again?"

He pulled on the line to find yet another rotting chest.  A quick knock on its surface would reveal three weapons, just like the ones from before.  This would bring his count to six weapons in just the one day.

"If I didn't know any better, I'd think Baldur is throwing swords that don't gain Absolute Accuracy in the pond."

Clap Clap Clap

The sudden, sharp noise drew the attention of the players, their conversations easing to hushed whispers, if not coming to an abrupt end. Baldur began to address the players, expressing gratitude for their participation, and congratulating the winners of the tournament's first round. It was a pretty even spread of winners, veteran players and names he could only assume were late starters. He was actually pretty shocked to hear that Calrex had taken a loss, reminiscing on the two's previous duels that were of a similar non-skill-using fashion. Even Zandra lost her duel against a younger man he had never seen before. Seeing some newer faces in the limelight was a nice change of pace, rather than the usual frontliners claiming all the fame.

On the other hand, though, he was glad to see that Lessa had proceeded to the next round. He had caught himself, his gaze turned in her direction with a soft smile after Baldur had revealed the victor of her match. A dry swallow, and his attention quickly turned forward once again. As the first round officially came to a close, a moment of respite for everyone to consume the spread of foods laid out, or converse with others, Jomei allowed the crowds to pass by him.

I should probably say something.. Hi at least. A palm met his forehead. Why was he overthinking saying hi to his friend, like he had many times before? Jomei instinctually blamed the chat with Alkor, when in reality he was still just denying how he felt. Moving against the flow of foot traffic, he found his way to the side of the blonde. She had changed out of the training attire that many of them, himself included (with the exception of the green cloak draped over his shoulders), still wore. A much more formal, and comfortable looking yukata. "Hey you" he said with a bright smile, "You were great out there. I'm glad to see you're moving on to the next round." A hand rose to rub at the nape of his neck, green eyes breaking from hers for a moment. "I know Baldur said he wanted to talk to the winners, so I won't take up too much of your time.. I just wanted to wish you good luck. I got knocked out of the first round.. so go kick someone's ass for me." he pushed through the bit of nerves so flash one of his signature sly smirk and wink combos.

koga_stats_100x100.jpg.f4788e2afaa81220d0866f648f49c0b4.jpg

Koga heard a familiar voice call out his name before he felt a heavy hand clasp his shoulder. Looking over at his doppel, aside from the differences in their height and eye color, it was difficult to distinguish between the two. "@Freyd, howzit," he greeted him. "Heh...thanks. Just hope no one's got any hard feelings over...all that..." the events of the raid boss still wore on Koga's mind. Even if they had turned in the sympathizer's favors, the anger he'd baited out of Baldur had stuck with Koga since then. Forgiven, but in Koga's mind, certainly not forgotten.

It was then that another familiar face made it's appearance. So familiar, it seemed he'd seen the man no less than an hour ago. Because Koga had. When he'd been flat on his back. "@Alkor," the Wolf offered a hand to the Phoenix. "I'd say good fight, but I think we both want a rematch at some point, eh?" One without the constraints of a tournament, and without the foolish playfulness Koga had displayed earlier. "That's my bad."

Alkor then asked what the group had been talking about moments before and Koga gestured towards @Nari-Lanreth. "Her. From what I understand, she should be your next opponent, unless something's changed."

The young woman had been beaming a smile at the rest, excited just o be around so many people and having such fun as she was, when there came the sudden call from Baldur about all the victories.  The girl counted a mental tally in her head as she did so, realizing that there were nine victors.  That certainly wasn't going to make for an even tournament bracket... which made things interesting to see how they'd proceed.  Maybe they could have a Rock, a Paper, and a Scissors bracket!  That would make sense thematically, although the young woman wasn't quite sure on how to make it all shake out.

Of course, she didn't have a lot of time to really think about that as there was suddenly was a new figure present among them, and she turned, giving a small grin to the man.  She'd seen the fight Koga'd had (at least in part- she'd been busy fighting Freyd at the time) and recognized this fellow as the man who she needed to take out on a date.

Fight wasn't really in her mindset at the moment as she turned her radiant happiness toward the newcomer to this conversation.  "Like, yeah!  Nari's your next opponent, but for looking you, you better look out for me!" the girl spoke, bringing her thumb to her sternum as she gave the man a playful wink.  "Cause if I win, I'm gonna take you out on that date!" she cheered, mischief dancing in her eyes.

Nari drifted back towards the group, hearing her name being spoken not once, but twice. Her curiosity peaked, she found the group joined by a newcomer, and from the sounds of it – he was to be her next opponent.

Bowing slightly, Nari will look the newcomer in the eyes, a stoic expression on her face as she speaks to him. “I’m Nari. I hear we’re to spar next. From what I’ve heard, you’re a capable fighter. I look forward to our contest, and hope that you provide a challenge.”

Her eyes seem somewhat distant as she speaks, as if her mind is off somewhere else. Memories flashing before her eyes of other such encounters, the calmness in her heart so similar. Perhaps… no, she put the thought aside as she smiled towards Koga and Astreya, readying herself for what was to come.

“Are you all ready for the next rounds? I wonder if it’ll be as quick as the previous…”

"I'd say good fight, but I think we both want a rematch at some point, eh?"

Alkor nodded. The way the event was engineered did not allow either man to fully gauge his own strength, let alone the skills of another. It was a simple metric, points based on hits, to examine the aggregate abilities of each player based on their efforts in a vacuum. He would not consider the loss representative of Koga's potential. He would not consider his victory a statement of any kind about his own. Instead, he saw victory and defeat in this setting as a litmus for how much or how little training he needed. Had he been too relaxed, or-

"Her. From what I understand, she should be your next opponent, unless something's changed."

His gaze slowly moved toward @Nari-Lanrethfor a moment, quietly considering her. She was small, her features were pallid, almost like a porcelain doll.  Her bangs fell in front of her eyes, almost to the point of obscuring her face. She did not ooze the confidence that the others did. This woman was taking part in a tournament for swordsmen? His expression was stern. The system did mitigate the natural weaknesses of players to a degree, and even enhanced what innate skill they brought with them into Aincrad. He knew better than to underestimate someone based on how they appeared, but she had the look of someone who did not belong, who was frail. It felt inappropriate, almost tasteless to endanger her.

It would not stop him, in the same way it would not stop any mindless creature in this world, from bearing down on her with his full strength.

Quote

"Like, yeah!  Nari's your next opponent, but for looking you, you better look out for me!"

This time, golden eyes snapped toward @Astreya. This woman, in contrast to the other, was the same height as him. Her eyes were shining with a radiance he couldn't match, though he noticed something familiar about the smile she wore. Her voice was louder by far than her peers, and the way she exaggerated her speech, the directness with which she approached...

Quote

"Cause if I win, I'm gonna take you out on that date!"

His eye twitched as her words took on new meaning. What he thought was a challenge shifted into jaunting. She wanted to take him on a date? "Why?" Alkor did not bother masking his skepticism when he asked, regarding the woman with the same scrutiny he would any opponent. If this was her tactic for unnerving him, perhaps @Koga had set her on this wayward path? He shot a look toward the man, but before he could admonish him, the other woman finally spoke up.

Quote

“I’m Nari. I hear we’re to spar next. From what I’ve heard, you’re a capable fighter. I look forward to our contest, and hope that you provide a challenge.”

Any reservations that might have existed in him died in that moment. His gaze moved slowly toward the woman, like a predator fixing its hungry gaze on prey. If she felt bold enough to speak that way, she had the stomach to accept whatever came next. "I'll let my sword do the talking, if it's all the same to you," he bowed his head slightly. Alkor straightened his back as she quickly disregarded him, much in the same way he had thought nothing of her at first glance. She was another obstacle. Nothing more, nothing less.

He turned to look at the rest of the group gathered after the first round, leaving the others to their conversation.

Her attention drawn as the second round display board was placed, Nari felt her face frown slightly at the realisation there had been a last minute adjustment to the rounds. She knew there was nothing to do about it, but she felt a twang of disappointment at not being able to immediately face Alk-

Her eyes narrowed as she saw the name on the board next to hers. NIGHT. A small flutter of anger began to kindle in her chest, and the longer she looked at it, the greater it grew.

Turning back to Alkor, she bowed slightly. “It would appear that fate has a different plan for us, for now. Do not lose in your next fight. I wish to face you, to see if what they say is true.”

Face contorted into a visage of pure fury, she made her way to the weapon stand, collecting her bokken before moving towards the ring. ‘Come, NIGHT. I have something I want you to meet.’

Xena had only just gotten to floor 24, she decided she might as well see the tournament, not that it would be a required thing in surviving this game, she had removed all of her vanity items, (Current Appearance) drawing attention would of course be a bad thing especially at such a high up floor, it was funny how much she hadn't changed from the very beginning of the game besides her vanity items, pulling her hood up she had made her way following a map she had towards the supposed ferryman that would take her to the tournament area, he actually wasn't there at the time. Likely bringing other people to the area, Xena scoffed but reluctantly took a seat a modest distance away from the edge leading into water, it was somewhat deep, deeper then her head that's for sure, and thus she wouldn't go anywhere near it, until she had too at least. It's not like the ferry would tip over, r i g h t ? pondering that thought for about 5 minutes she came back from her thought to a snap, finding the ferryman was back. She rather quickly hopped to her feet, how long had he been waiting for her to snap out of her thinking session?

Hopefully not too long, walking over to the small ferry her legs grew somewhat weak as she watched water around the boat shift it somewhat to the left or right, god this wasn't rocket science why did her entire body feel like it was about to collapse. She finally stepped a foot on the ferry and took a seat sighing in a frightened manor and closing her eyes, if she didn't look so wouldn't have to be afraid, right. The ocean around the boat was loud, as she felt a slight movement it urged her to open her eyes, to see what had happened, it was obvious that the boat had began to move towards the island the tournament had been placed on, supposedly the tournament was placed on a high leveled players island, being held as a bit of a fun holiday event. Xena couldn't judge, it was supposedly completely safe, not that she was going to be joining, she was far too late to do that. As the ferry rocked back and forth Xena found herself digging her clawed gauntlets somewhat into the boat's wood, the NPC who had been manning it softly asked her to not do so which with reluctance she did stop. "Sorry, I uh..." She couldn't really find the words to say that she was afraid of water to the NPC. She simply just stayed silent, and begged the world to just let this ride be over, but it would take another few minutes before it would actually finish. The boat could be felt as it shifted from the water pushing against it, though the thing that really gave her a heart attack was when she felt it stop due to hitting something, and that finally made her open her eyes, looking around with panic she found they were at a dock, basically jumping onto said doc she just stood for a moment breathing somewhat rapidly, god she hated water so much.

It didn't matter right now though, she had made it and now she just needed to get to the spectator's area, saying a thanks to the NPC she began to do just that. The island was very confusing at first, she had never been there before and there was basically no map, but she was able to follow the sound of the event. The area had a extremely Japanese shrine style, it was a beautiful area that's for sure, and very clearly well maintained. As she slipped into the building that the tournament was being housed in specifically the spectator area she just sat against a wall quietly, she made it without dying so, that was a plus.

"Handwraps, you say?"  Freyd flipped his hands over, palms up, revealing tightly wound ribbons of nothingness whose very existence seemed abhorrent.  It was as if their very presence was an act of defiance against their virtual reality, eager to assist their wielder with tearing it apart.  "I recently had to make a change, and might still have a few desirable odds and ends from past adventures laying about my shop.  What 'elemental' gifts did you have in mind, @Astralin?"

[later and elsewhere]

Freyd listened to @Hirru, noting that he was a local resident and simply filing it away in that Indiana Jones-style warehouse that was his brain.  His companion clearly needed to vent and their gathering before the raid had not been the proper venue.  Even in that small group, he sensed that the man felt too exposed to judgment.  Though he'd heard the former Vice-Commander's tale before, Freyd hadn't fully appreciate the toll that those recounted events had taken.  Hirru seemed deflated, bordering on defeated.  So he just sat and let him say his peace.  Fishing had always been good for that.  And the fish never blabbed, so you could tell them anything.

"I just got my ass whooped by a cheerleader; which is oddly both humiliating and also every teenage boy's wet dream."  He chuckled at the jarring ways in which life forced you to re-examine your perspective.  Turning pensive, the Whisper stroked his chin while formulating how best to speak his mind in a way that might prove helpful to a friend.

"Don't fret too much about your performance.  This tournament is less about skill than random chance, but that also carries a valuable lesson: humility."  The chuckle faded to a serene and simple smile charged with unexpected contentment.  "We all need reminding that we can be bested, and to appreciate the prowess of our peers, whether they be hunters or healers.  Don't sell yourself short, Hirru.  Never do that.  You've faced perils and challenges beyond the imagination of many in this game, and made the hardest of choices."  Though left unspoken, Freyd knew exactly how that felt.  He just advertised it less, but his own daily decisions carried weight measured in lives.  Perhaps they were more alike than either of them had previously realized.  His lip twitched for an instant as his decision was made.

Placing his line down on the carefully manicured stones surrounding the pond, he pressed his foot upon the handles with surprising care not to damage the rod.  Holding a hand up, he showed Hirru the utter darkness of the things wrapped about his appendage.  You could practically feel it trying to draw you in, eager to suck your soul out through mere contact, shattering any obstacle it might encounter along the way.  Reaching over with his other hand, Freyd tugged at the wrist and pulled the surprisingly light void cloth back.  Contact between the wraps produced and oddly soothing soft hum, revealing some form of field designed to contain the essence of nothingness within.  Unfurling revealed a scourged and mangled hand with most of the expected digital skin cracked and torn to expose the orange model mesh beneath.  Injuries in SAO were not typically and particularly gruesome, nor often all that painful, but this looked outright nasty.

"We all make choices.  Some require sacrifices.  Our only option is to endure.  Healers can help with that."  The wraps snapped back into place the moment he released his grip, engulfing his hand once more.  It was oddly like watching the shadow of a thing, but without that which was meant to cast it.  Freyd's eyes locked firmly on the pond, the harsh sadness of necessity claiming the careworn wrinkles the edges that seemed to age the man.

"I didn't change my mind at the raid, Hirru, when I changed my vote.  Gabrandr and his cause meant nothing to me, and conviction in my early argument remained.  But seeing fractures and splintering unity among the front lines compelled me to reconsider the larger perspective."  He clenched his fists reflexively, causing the holy seals around Samael's Pride to warble.  "We can't survive this place if we're at each other's throats.  In the end, losing an argument was a trivial price to pay, compared to losing the war, and all of our lives."  Relaxing his grip, Freyd patted Hirru on the shoulder, as it to assuage his doubts and any other baggage assailing him from history long since past.  It lasted on a few seconds before solemnity was sundered by a sing-song systems prompt, and Freyd's smile returned to help break his sudden, somber mood, as his friend fished up another treasure chest.

"I guess it’s just our lot in life to dredge up awesome potential.  The real question is: what will you do with it?"

Nari spotted the familiar girl from the encounter with the minotaur, even with the cloak pulled up over her head, as if to hide herself away. Although frustration still held her heart – she was not looking forward to what was to come, or was she? It didn’t really matter now, did it – she knew that the new face would likely enjoy some company. Nari could tell that Xena seemed a little uncomfortable in the area – either from the amount of people, or something else Nari couldn’t quite tell. Whatever it was, she knew that she should go try and relax the girl – a sudden image of a smiling face leading her out a door, not too long ago, crossed her mind.

Although not gone, the frustration within her subsided slightly as a soft grin split across her face. Wandering over to Xena, Nari gave a small wave as she approached, trying to draw the girl’s attention so as to not sneak up and scare her anymore than she already appeared to be.

“Have you come to enjoy the festivities and…show?” Her voice soft, kept low so as not to attract too much attention to them, Nari will smile at Xena in an attempt to comfort her nerves. “I don’t know if you remember me or not, but we met during the labyrinth for the Minotaurs – with the Gardener and Ir-I mean, Astreya. I believe Astreya is around here somewhere as well…but if you don’t feel like jumping into the crowds, we could stay here a bit.”

Twirling around slightly in her Keikogi (reference), letting her hair whip around her carelessly, Nari could feel the last of the frustration slipping away – if only for the moment. In time, it would return, but for now…for now she could show Xena around, and maybe introduce her a little bit.

Xena had been twiddling her thumbs sitting in a corner of the room, she had only been there about 3 minutes now, still getting over her panic of being in a boat above a ocean, she might just need to bum a warp crystal just to go home, she felt a somewhat calming feeling as something poked out from around her neck, a small tiger cub had stowed away in her cloak, she knew they were there but she hadn't paid them any mind due to the stress just getting here was bringing her, with a small smile she pulled the cub from her cloak and set them on her lap petting them softly. It was now that someone had walked up to her calling for her attention, she hadn't recognized them at first until she pulled her hood up a tad to see their face, sure enough it was that lady from the Minotaur quest, small world huh.

"Oh uh... Hey." She stated in a somewhat distracted or embarrassed tone, she didn't really know them that well, as a matter a fact she barely remembered their name, yet they walked right up to her so eagerly, Xena even looked quite a bit different from normal after ditching her vanity cat items as well as having a new pair of claws. Though, maybe those were what gave it away, she hadn't seen a single other player who used them sense the very beginning. "Small world huh?..." She said with a small smile trying to crack a joke to break her own tension, not that it helped in the slightest. The tiger cub looked up at the approaching lady just looking them up and down before laying back down on Xena's lap paying them no mind.

"I uh, only just managed to find the time to come check it out yeah..." She masked the real reason which was fear of the open ocean trip that it took just to get here. "That's a really pretty outfit, If I had known people decided to wear that kind of stuff I'd of worn a kimono." She joked, she didn't actually have one in game, she did however have on in the real world, she wondered how it was doing now that she thought about it. Her home likely was covered in dust now that she wasn't able to clean it. Maybe she should get a kimono made for the future, for any festive events. That of course would be for the future, as she listened to the women talk. "I uh, don't really get around much so, I don't exactly know anyone here besides you and those 2..." She was of course effectively saying she would likely prefer to be here until the tournament started again, speaking of tournament. "Uh well... did i miss anything important in the tournament? I heard round one ended but, that's about it."

Nari smiled at the girl – a memory of her own awkwardness around people she didn’t know coming back to her. She had changed…a lot, in the recent times. Glancing around, she looked for who nearby might be worth introducing the poor girl to, thinking that maybe a bit of distraction might help calm her.

She spotted Koga not too far away, waving at the man to draw his attention. “Hey! Koga! Come here, I have someone I want to introduce you to!”

Glancing back towards Xena, Nari will add, “Koga is great, he’s been…well, a great friend. Once you get passed his…loner demeaner. He enjoys his solitude, but he’s loyal.” Her eyes will seem to glaze over and the smile dip for a second as she disappears into memories, before she smiles again, returning her attention to the present.

“I’ve been on a few adventures with him, and well, he may not be much to look at – but he’s definitely got a great personality.”

Suddenly remembering that the girl had asked what had occurred thus far in the tournament, Nari will pause, thinking back. She hadn’t seen much but…

“I’m not sure how most of the fights went – I think Koga lost his…I think. All I really know is that I managed to defeat someone named Jomei.” Suddenly realizing that she had forgotten all about her first opponent, she’ll begin to wildly look around for the man.

There was something about the look that the man gave her that cut through her, or felt like it did.  The absolute directness of the stare, the unwavering gaze and the surety in it was immediately interesting to the young woman.  She was starting to pick up now, what @Koga had been referring to when he was discussing Alkor.  He wasn't looking at the various people here as people, to see who or what they may be in the socialite aspect, not like Astreya did.

The dark-haired girl had an eye for body language and could tell often just while in conversation with someone how they were really feeling and she adjusted herself accordingly.  If they enjoyed her normal strong, warm personality, she'd keep it.  But, like Koga and Nari, if they were a bit more reserved and quiet regarding things, she tended to dial herself back a little, not being quite so boisterous, and matched the unspoken conversation of those around her.

@Alkor fought with intensity and bloodlust, without holding back.  That was how Koga had described him, and now seeing him a bit more up close, she could understand that.  To her, and this was simply the first, barest impressions of him, even without a word spoken, was a wild animal.  One caged in a prison of social construct that he sought desperately to break his fangs against.  She felt as if his gaze saw others as different steps on the pecking order, and that hierarchy is what tried to find, seeking to stand atop it.

She could be wrong- and had been wildly wrong before- but just from the manner in which he carried himself, measured those around him and just seemed to exist, it felt right.  But until she could actually talk to him, to see how he moved, the tones used, and everything she wouldn't have the clear picture.

But with all of that, the one thing she hadn't been prepared for in her teasing note to him was a singular word, accompanied with tone and that same unblinking, predatory look.  He was sizing her up, curious what she was made of, if he should fear her, or more likely, just how much she should fear him.  Before she had chance to respond, however, Nari's words reached him and the gaze moved in a steady, measured response, before giving his take on the matter.

However, Astreya merely watched as @Nari-Lanreth seemed to note that the brackets had changed, and she moved away from them, an expression the dark-haired girl not used to seeing on her friend's face present: anger.

All the same, she didn't let it dampen her mood, turning her gaze back to Alkor.  "So like, a better question- why not?  It's for getting to know people better, right?  There's only a couple people that, like, I don't know here, and you're one of them.  So if I manage to make it all the way, like, to the top, then that's the decision I made," she responded, beaming a sunny smile toward him.  "Unless you wanna chat now?  Let you off the hook~" she teased.

She didn't have the martial prowess, she was already sure of that, but maybe she could land herself higher on his own inner hierarchy through social maneuvering.  In these sorts of environments, such a skill was almost more dangerous than being able to fight well.  She kept the thoughts behind the teasing little grin on her face even as she sought to get his response and measure him back in return.

The matches were announced.

Almost everyone just dispersed. Ongoing conversations stopped abruptly, Astralin was somewhat disoriented, but hopefully it wouldn't be too much for her.

The only thing having to do with Astralin at this time was to answer Freyd's question. She clearly hadn't heard of everything in terms of unique, but... "It's not like I know all of my options, but something...unique might do. I've heard of a few enhancements containing things like fire, ice, even electricity...I've also heard...something about light and dark energy? Speaking of which, no thanks on the dark energy, I'd rather not be classified as a stereotypical witch..." She explained with a nervous chuckle as she tried to recall the enhancements she'd heard of. She knew that burn and freeze existed...'cause she had them on her, albeit her tier will be higher than theirs soon. "So...that's all I could remember for the time being, but uh, keep me posted, maybe?" She asked.

Koga was a little surprised and horrified that @Astreya had so blatantly announced her intent to ask Alkor on the awarded date, were it possible. He shouldn't have been. But he was. As Nari addressed her opponent, Koga's eyes drifted over to @Alkor, but he didn't need to see the burning stare to know it was already there. He felt it. "Hey, don't blame me," he said to the man, lifting his hands as if they would serve as some kind of barrier between himself and the man's wrath. "I tried to tell her it wasn't a great idea." Most guys would be mad if their friend tried to dissuade a pretty girl from asking them out. Alkor was the opposite of most guys.

And just like that, Alkor left the little group again, probably to go observe the other fighters, potential opponents and ways to get stronger, as Alkor saw them.

Koga then heard his name be called by a familiar voice. @Nari-Lanreth. He walked over to where he was bidden. "Yo, what's up?" he asked, noticing a shorter girl. She seemed familiar. He couldn't quite place her at first though. And then it clicked. "Oh, you're that girl who keeps coming by my shop. Claws, right?" That had to be it. No one else had ever ordered such peculiar weapons from him before. Nor was he one to forget one of his few 'loyal' customers. ( @Xena )

The next batch of fighters was announced, and Koga nearly choked when he heard the match ups. 'NIGHT and Nari!?' Oh, this was not good. This was the opposite of good. They might kill each other. Koga's face visibly paled at the announcement. The man went off to watch the fight.

Koga wished he could've been surprised at the way the tank was the first to strike, her blow full of rancor. Someone, sworn to protect those at their side, recklessly swinging, missing, and receiving the first blow for her transgression.

What did surprise him though was the utter absence of NIGHT's presence. He'd known the woman long enough to recognize that the person standing their, reacting, jerking out of the way out of a sense of self-preservation, was just something wearing her skin. It was a wonder she had been the one to earn the first point in that state.

Nari was quick though. She didn't miss a beat as she charged in again, course corrected, avoided NIGHT's weak attack, sharply striking @NIGHT in return for the first. Koga winced as he watched the movements play out. That was the movement of a practiced martial artist. An advantage NIGHT did not have, as far as he knew. Not that it mattered right now anyways.

Koga leaned forward, almost spilling into the pit himself as he watched Nari reel back for a blow that wasn't just meant to score a point. It was a blow aimed to maim, hurt, kill if it managed with it's pitiful weapon. Koga physically bit down on his tongue to keep from crying out his concern. Concern for them both.

It was only an instinctual reaction from NIGHT to lash out that saved her, forcing Nari back.

But...that wasn't the furious Nari from a moment before anymore. This was...something else entirely. Calm. Composed. All the more terrifying for it. Nothing NIGHT did at this point meant a thing. All the flailing, the desperate jerking around, it was useless. A quick, calculated motion. Were it a real sword, were their lives not blissfully guarded by hit points, NIGHT would've died right there. Hell, for all Koga knew, she'd died before stepping onto the mat.

Nari whispered something in the space between her last blow, and the next. Though Koga couldn't hear it, he could read the words that gently floated from the girl's lips. See them. Koga's body wanted to move. Do something, anything. She really intended to try and strike the other down. Why was he just standing there? Koga looked desperately up at @Baldur, but the other man did not notice him, too affixed on the fight himself. Crimson eyes flicked back to the duel.

It was with a terrified scream that the fight ended.

Just not in the way Koga had expected.

A terrified strike, right to Nari's neck. Panicked words in a language Koga didn't understand. Nari stunned frozen. NIGHT running, pushing through the crowd. Koga glancing up at Baldur. The man's eyes already on him, a subtle nod.

Koga ran after her.

Nari smiled at Koga, waving a hand towards the girl. “Oh, you two know each other already? Awesome! I was going to show her around a bit, maybe introduce her-“

Nari heard the announcement, and her words stopped, her heart clenching. She knew what that meant. Eyes turning cold, distant and full of an emotion she rarely felt, she stepped away from the others, her words carrying behind her as she did so – barely audible, but mumbled nonetheless.

“Right…time to fight. I’ll, uh, come back later. Hopefully you two enjoy the show…”

Without another word she headed out, collecting herself for what was to come. She knew, without a doubt, this would be one of the hardest fights for her – but she wasn’t afeared of losing. Quite the opposite, she was afeard of winning. She was afeard of what that would mean for her…what she would do. She wasn’t sure if she’d be able to control it – if it came down to that.

------------

The spear had struck her. She felt a sudden…emptiness. She was sure to those around it must appear as if she had been stunned, but Nari felt – was that relief? A shudder passed down her spine as she wondered. Eyes empty, not really seeing anything around, she bowed towards the spot that had once been NIGHT’s form.

Turning away, she strode out of the square, passing sharply by something – or someone, she wasn’t sure. Nothing seemed to come into focus, her steps leading her somewhere away. The hollowness was spreading, taking over her, as her body unconsciously led her away. ‘Lost. I lost.’

The thoughts were mere hollows of words in her head, and she felt herself come to a stop suddenly. She barely registered a girl beside her – the image of cat ears came to mind, but was lost to the void that was now her mind. She stared outwards – not seeing anything, not truly conscious of anything going on.

‘Did…did I do it again?’ The bokken in her hand came up in her vision, visible against the background. On it she saw the red marks, the blood that still sat on the blade. The glint of the light against the darkness, as she stared into her reflection – a younger face, a younger time. The memories suddenly rushed forward, surging through her as she was forced to relive the moment in her mind.

A sudden jerking movement and she tossed the bokken, twirling through the air before disappearing from sight. Collapsing to her knees, the tears streamed down her face, her hands splayed on her lap as she stared at them – unmoving, unfocused, her face shed of any emotion aside from the tears that streamed down it. ‘Did I…again?’

[Bibbito-boppity-boop, back to @Astralinpart of the convo]

A quick pop-up and scan were all that he required to check his inventory.  Thank goodness Quip actually ignored everything he said and did some real work around the shop.  Dingo was, well, there?  Freyd wasn't sure how much the boy could be relied upon to do anything except excessive napping, and swore that he'd put on his Nervegear too tight before coming into the game.

"Hrm... no, I don't see anything in stock that suits your request.  It's all too macabre for your tastes, I suspect.  If you have items you'd like identified, please feel free to drop them off.  Or, if you'd like something sought and found, let me know and I'll see what I can do.  Now, if you'll excuse me, there was someone I was hoping to follow up with.  Enjoy the rest of the tournament!"

A quick pivot, sidestep and stride later, Freyd resumed his search for Hirru, following his earlier tracking attempt.

she only did what she believed was right, at the time.
