[F12 – SP] A Return to Eden | <<Nature’s Treasures: Little Eden>>

Recommended Posts

Nari stepped off the teleporter pad, and the first thing she noticed was the smell. Horrid, as of natural decay wafted through the air. Around her she saw what appeared to be settlement stilted above the swamp waters of marshlands – which explained the smell. Gingerly she stepped down off the teleporter pad, walking across to the edge of a nearby boardwalk, staring down into the green murk that was considered water. ‘Nemo sure does have an affection for the more…disgusting and depressing of places.’

The rumour had reached her ears again, about Nemo making another appearance – this time on floor twelve. Nari had heard about the floor itself, but had never before visited the area. She preferred to avoid bogs and swamps where possible, and so had never really had cause to come here previously. But the allure of the area known as Little Eden was just…too much, especially considering the fact that she had recently begun to run low on the materials she needed in order to complete her work as a blacksmith. Desires and need had forced her to make the journey, tied in with a determination to meet deadlines.

Following the boardwalk through the little town – if it could even be called a town, and not just a collection of buildings on stilts above the bog – Nari headed for the nearest exit of the area, determined to make her way out and find Nemo as quickly as possible. She knew she would have to do some scavenging within the bog itself as she went, which she wasn’t looking forward to in the least. ‘The prizes at Little Eden should be more than worth it, though. Remember the last haul…’

Nari’s gaze ran over the couple of guards that seemed to stand around what must be the entrance to the town, before landing on a single individual whom she immediately recognised – the straw hat standing out even against this dull and colourless area. Nari felt a surge of anger at the sight of him, before managing to calm herself. Wandering over to him, Nari couldn’t help but force an aggressive, sarcastic smile onto her face. The words came out of her throat as a venomous hiss, the emotions toiling over and through the air as she confronted the man-dragon-betrayer.

“Well, hello, Nemo. Fancy seeing you here…” The man turned to smile at Nari, apparently completely oblivious to the fact that the other wished to tear him limb from limb, slowly and carefully, over a long period of time. Clearly her original meeting with him had left a slight mark on her, a mark that was only darkening with her time in this death game.

“It’s good to see you again, friend! I assume you wouldn’t mind spending some time in the garden once more? I do love it there, especially when I can have some friendly company!” The smile bore into Nari as he waited for her response.

“Lead the way.” The hissed words would’ve brought hesitation to anyone else had they have heard them – but the NPC was oblivious to such emotions, just following the pre-programmed path it was required to take. A final smile towards the player, and Nemo turned to begin leading her out into the swamps. Nari gave one final check of her equipment, before heading out after the man.

She glanced about as she walked, wondering if she could spot anything on the pathway as she went. Her thoughts turned back to the very first time she had travelled with Nemo, and everything that had occurred since that moment. She felt the anger rise again, and knew that in her heart she was ready for what she had planned to do here. She knew that Nemo himself couldn’t be destroyed – the system would stop her from doing that. His friends and those creatures within his gardens, however…they were fair game. And Nari was ready for some revenge upon this world.

Nemo made small talk as they made their way out into the bog area, attempting to pull Nari into that same sense of safety and friendship that he had originally tried with her when they first met – perhaps that was all that his programming allowed him to do. Regardless, Nari ignored most of his attempts, giving half-worded answers, or remaining silent in most cases. Her eyes continued to scan the ground as they walked, looking for anything of value that could be found. She didn’t really expect much along the edges of the bog, but she figured it was always worth a try – plus, it would help her get better at foraging items, which was always a bonus.

As they continued walking, Nemo suddenly stopped, turning to face Nari. A serious look upon his face, bringing Nari to a halt and causing her hand to hover towards the blade sheathed on her hip. Something about his stance seemed off to her, and Nari felt herself glancing around quickly, looking for any sign that a trap lay about the area. Her eyes came up short however, and she found herself forced to return her gaze to Nemo – who seemed to be eyeing her up, as if he had something to say to her.

“I’m glad that you decided to return. It’s been rather lonely without someone around…and I always enjoy having company!” The man smiled, the entire thing setting off alarm bells in Nari’s head – yet…there was nothing of a threat in his manner, or his words. The entire thing had been…oddly normal. It didn’t make her feel any sort of pity for the NPC, but it definitely left Nari confused as to…well, everything now.

Nemo made it a dozen steps before Nari realised they were moving again. Releasing the grip on her weapon, and allowing the tension to fall from her body, she reluctantly picked up the pace, shuffling forward to catch the man as he led her onwards. She was wondering if this quest would somehow be different this time, perhaps more involved.

Her eyes wandering slightly along the paths for anything of interest, she felt her gaze constantly returning to the back of Nemo – something about him this time felt so…different. She couldn’t quite place her finger on it, but it was enough to cause a disturbance in her otherwise confident and ready nature. Determined not to let anything take her by surprise going forward, she carried on, trying to keep all of her senses sharp.

Nari sidestepped along the path as she spotted the shiny metallic bars gleaming from the side of the road. Quickly snatching them up, she glanced around once more – just in case there was anything else to be found, before rushing after Nemo. The man had made good distance on her in the brief moments that she had taken to step off the path, and she found herself running to catch up.

“I have so much to show you in the garden. It’s grown since last you visited! I think you’re going to love it.” His chipper voice rang out against the otherwise silent air, giving Nari a shiver down her spine. The ‘niceness’ all seemed so fake to her, a ploy to reel her in and then smash her to pieces. ‘You’re being bitter.’

Of course she was being bitter. It still stung. And she knew that little was going to help that, except maybe time. But…for now, she could at least go and beat things into thousands of little shards and make herself feel powerful. That counted for something too, right?

Nari wondered if they were coming close to the pad that would take them to the garden. She’d already found a few minor materials – but she craved, needed more. Nemo was still talking, and she was wondering if she tried to run him through with her blade, whether it would do anything or not. Shrugging – deciding it really wasn’t worth it – she was forced to listen to his prattle, able to cut him off every few times, without any real way of shutting him up entirely.

“As I was saying before, I’ve really grown the-“

“I don’t care.”

“-there’s new animals, new plants and flowers! Oh you should see-“

“I don’t care.”

“-and the new bushes in the southern corner, absolutely gorgeous.

“I do not care.”

“Oh! And there’s a spot I think you’d enjoy with a small area perfect for-“

“I do not care.”

Her outbursts were getting her nowhere as the man kept talking, and eventually Nari shut herself up, realising it was doing absolutely nothing to stop the man from continuing – and was truly only making herself more annoyed. Sighing, giving into the hell that she had to deal with for the time being at least, she tried to tune out the man’s voice.

His next words caught her by surprise, as she recognised what they meant. “We’re here!” Glancing ahead, she saw the twin stones that marked the entrance to the garden. Nemo paused for a moment, smiling at her, before heading over and twinkling out of sight. Nari gave a slight nod to herself, before stepping up between the rocks, closing her eyes as the dazzling light and slight hum began.

‘Let’s get this party started.’

Opening her eyes, Nari found herself once more in the garden known as Little Eden – around her were the lush bushes, the various animals and assorted plants that sprawled throughout the area. Off to the side, Nemo stood, waiting to welcome her. Nari didn’t give him the chance, pushing past and heading straight for the nearest set of bushes. She knew at this point if she was forced to listen to his voice anymore, she might actually draw her sword and see if he was killable.

Kneeling down beside the bushes, she closed her eyes for a moment, breathing in and out a few times before opening them again and beginning her search. Her hands pulled carefully at the ground around the base of the bushes, trying to softly pull out the dirt in search of the metallic bits that appeared intertwined with the plants themselves. She felt a calmness wash over her as she did so, something entirely soothing about the action itself bringing her to a place of peace and comfort.

Her first few moments found nothing of interest, and Nari had to fight the urge to move onto the next area. Instead, she forced herself to dig slightly deeper – careful not to harm the plants themselves as she went, regardless of how much she may want to lash out and destroy everything here. She knew it wouldn’t help anything, especially her search for the hidden goods that she desired to find here. ‘No, calmness and control is required. Only then will success be found.’

Her fingers clawed through the dirt carefully, displacing that which was loose beneath her touch, gently pulling it aside and revealing that which was beneath. She repeated the process over again and again, determined to force the calmness upon herself before she considered any other actions in the garden – she needed to be calm, collected and under control if she wished to succeed here. This was no time for out-of-control actions, for emotions to run high and ruin everything for her. Not now, not ever. She needed to learn control, if she was ever going to be better.

Her agitation got the better of her – only for a moment, but long enough that the roots beneath her hands crumbled away into thousands of shards, disappearing as she clenched down too hard. She cursed herself at the carelessness, before breathing deeply to calm herself – emotions wouldn’t help here, only control would. She knew what she had to do, to take control of her mental state – that was the only way to success. She was growing stronger every day, but there was still so much farther for her to go. She needed to do better, to be better. That began with ensuring that she wouldn’t lose control in the instant.

Clenching and unclenching her fingers a few times, Nari forced the agitation from her body before refocusing on her work. Clawing at the dirt once more, she pulled away the loose materials before separating it completely from the roots of the plants themselves. Slowly, carefully, she began to reveal the hearts of the plants, careful not to disturb them more than necessary.

She felt the smile split across her face as the success of it all finally paid off. She had to admit, it was an enjoyable feeling – to find what you were looking for, after so much failure. She thought about that, the fact that something so bad could lead to something so good. ‘Perhaps that is something to consider, not only in searching for goods, but in life itself. The good always feels better after some bad. Even if the bad hurts to begin with…an interesting thought.’

Her hands continued to move as she thought about the prospects of her discovery, digging away at the plants and dirt. She felt herself wondering if perhaps there was more to be found in menial tasks such as foraging than most people knew – there was certainly some enlightenment in her own tasks. She thought back to the Gardener, and everything she had learnt while kneeling beside him in the dirt, listening to his words of wisdom. It was then, that she had decided upon her path. ‘And it was in these instances in the future, that I would again find clarity and direction…certainly not something of pure coincidence.’

Her fingers had stopped moving as she thought back upon all the instances of her gathering in the past. There were far more than she had considered, including that time she had headed into the forest with Yuki. Although the activities themselves were…tiring, they were also fulfilling in ways she couldn’t quite explain. The entire thought of it all brought a soft smile to her face, and Nari returned once again to her work. She let her mind wander as she did so, realising that she was entering a wonderful area of peace.

‘I could lose myself to this, if I gave myself the chance to. Lose it all, and just stay here forever, digging in the dirt and finding things for creation. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?’ She smiled at the thought, considering it for a few moments. Then the faces flashed past, reminding her of her purpose here. ‘No. As much as I may want it to be, my place is not here. My place is on the front lines, assisting those who fight for our freedom. That’s where I need to be. And that’s where I plan on returning to.’

The bars slide from beneath the plant as Nari slowly dug further and further down into it – rewarding her efforts ever so slightly. She refused to let her excitement get the better of her, as she pulled them free, depositing them into her inventory with care. She had done well thus far, but was willing to spend some more time digging in the dirt before turning to other, more dangerous activities. She glanced about, seeing a number of animals and beasts in the vicinity – most ignoring her entirely. Nemo remained in his same position by the teleporter pad, his expression one of joy and bliss at having a friend around. Nari felt a moment of loathing before she managed to suppress the feelings.

Moving carefully to a new area, she knelt down once more, beginning the routine of sliding the dirt aside, carefully inspecting around the revealed areas, before continuing the action on repeat. She knew that it wouldn’t be much longer before she was ready, but she knew that now was a moment of balance – a time to prepare and ensure.

Content with the progress she had made, Nari placed away the materials that she had found before leveraging herself to her feet. Breathing in deeply, she glanced around for anything that would prove a worthy foe. She saw many different beings roaming the areas, from the grass covered wolflike creatures, to creatures that walked on numerous legs and appeared to be created from nightmares.

Nari found her target hovering over a collection of flowers nearby, however. It appeared as if a small drake of some sorts, as if somehow related to the giant green beast she had once fought here before. Drawing her sword from its sheath, she crossed to the creature’s area, lining herself up across from it. Her blade levelled against the top of her shield, her eyes locked on the little dragon’s form as she called forth her form and control – readying herself for battle. Her heart slowed, calming as she felt the rush of adrenaline flow through her.

Nari’s blade pushed forwards as she lunged out towards the dragon like creature, sliding the blade’s edge right along the flank of the tiny thing. It let out a small squeak of surprise, a large gash appearing in its side, and its health bar dropping significantly as the blade in Nari’s hand glowed softly violet. She pulled herself back behind her shield before the creature could truly react, readying herself for a counter attack that never truly made it her way.

Embrittled with the success of the first attack, Nari felt herself smiling – it was time she got some revenge on this place after all. Stepping calmly towards the right, she readied her blade to lash forward again, hoping to catch the small creature by surprise as she did so – determined to end this fight as quickly as possible and move on to the next being that she was going to put down.

Thinking back to her first fights against the smaller creatures of the lower floors, Nari felt a sudden surge of pride at how far she’d come. Before, something as simple as a boar had been so difficult – but now…now she was taking on creatures of much greater aptitude and danger without any concerns. Sure, it wasn’t a floor boss by any means – but maybe one day she would be ready to face something so…powerful. For now, she was content with how she was doing – even if it was against something as minor as a little baby dragon that someone like Astreya could wipe out with a single hit.

Sliding to her left, she pulled her shield into place, readying her blade against the top of it and waiting for the opening she knew she would find. Stepping softly, she pushed forward, driving her blade along the edge of the shield and aiming for the centre of the little dragon’s body, hoping to end the fight with this last strike.

The pitiful creature exploded in a shower of sparks, and Nari felt the briefest moment of pity for it. The fight hadn’t lasted long at all, but Nari knew better than to rush into another round of combat just yet. She knew that her cooldowns would limit her from being able to fight effectively yet – and besides, letting the body relax a bit wasn’t such a bad thing. She had to admit that it had been a good haul, but it wasn’t worth dying over.

Sliding her sword back into her sheath, she turned to the pathways, deciding that a bit of searching could help cool her body off enough before she returned to obliterating anything she found here. She eyed a pair of wolflike creatures that roamed nearby, deciding that perhaps one of them would make a nice target once she was done searching the area – she just needed to figure out exactly how she was going to get them separated.

The shiny metallic bars clinked in her hands as she pulled them from beneath the bushes, drawing them from their hiding places and storing them away in her inventory. This had truly been an excellent haul, and was only getting better with time. She wondered if it was even going to be worth her while to fight the wolflike creatures if she could just find everything laying about here.

Glancing at her health bar, she decided that she was in no immediate rush, and so she could spend some more time simply searching the grounds for anything of value. The wolves weren’t going anywhere, yet. And they hadn’t split up like Nari was hoping that they would do – so for the purpose of safety, it might be best just to continue looking, anyways.

Pulling aside branches and leaves, she kept her one eye looking for the shiny metallic bars, while her other eye constantly watched for any sign that her targets were going to split up – presenting an easy target for her to hunt down.

Nari smiled as she collected another bundle of the shiny metallic bars. Her luck was truly with her today as she busied herself in the bushes. This was far better than she had ever imagined – far better than the last time she had come here. It appeared as if the garden was trying to repay her for what had happened before, as if this was somehow Nemo’s way of apologising for the way he had treated her previously.

At the thought of him, Nari paused, glancing over in his direction. The man was still by the teleporter pad where she had left him, his face a smile of solace, as if he was somehow enjoying just having someone here – even if that someone wanted him dead. Nari shrugged off the sudden feeling of guilt, returning to her search. ‘He’s an NPC…he doesn’t know wrong for right…have I been too hard on him? Or am I projecting my anger towards others on…him?’

Straightening up, Nari tucked away the small pile of materials that she had just found. Eyeing the wolves, she noticed that one had drifted slightly away from the others – leaving itself vulnerable, in a position where its companions likely wouldn’t be drawn once Nari unleashed on it. Or, at least, that’s what she expected would happen. The creatures did seem to appear to move in packs and enjoy staying close to one another…

But she was confident that in this case, she would be okay. Cardinal wouldn’t throw something so dangerous at her – at least, not yet. Convincing herself that she was taking a well calculated risk, she moved to a position to intercept the creature, far enough away that it wouldn’t bring attention to the companions, but close enough that she could suddenly lunge forward if the one target began to slink away. Drawing her sword as she crossed the area, she wondered briefly if there weren’t better weapons for individuals such as herself…

Nari miscalculated the speed of the creature in her haste to strike at it, and although she landed a strong hit across its side, she felt as the teeth grazed her underneath the protection of the shield. More surprisingly, the creature seemed to glow as its teeth connected with her, a small portion of its health bar recovering from what she could only assume was something related to its attack. Nari eyed the creature cautiously, wondering if the affect applied on every successful strike – or only under certain conditions. Either way, it would make this more difficult – and all the more reason not to fight them in large numbers, if avoidable.

Not one to be outdone yet, she pulled her shield up in front of her again, readying the blade along its top edge. She eyed down the length of her weapon, waiting for an opening in its movement before lunging forward. In the corner of her eye, she saw its partners continuing along the path they had been following, thankfully not yet drawn to the fighting. Something she hoped to maintain as long as this was going on.

Nari felt her feet give out under her as she lunged forward, attempting to strike first at the wolf. She tipped, her shield opening up slightly as the wolf lunged into the air, managing to catch the side of her face with its claws. Her own health bar barely registered any change, but she knew she had taken a hit. The entire situation had been careless – and she cursed herself silently for letting it happen. Taking a deep breath, she stepped back, putting some space between her and her opponent.

Her shield and sword in their familiar positions, she eyed down the length of the blade once more – thinking once again that perhaps there were better weapons for this kind of fighting. It was something she would have to investigate later, for now she needed to focus on the battle at hand. Careful of her footing, she closed the gap with the wolf once more, readying for another strong strike.
