[F09 – SP] Flames Unkindled <<Guardian of Fire>>

Recommended Posts

Nari had stepped off the teleporter pad onto Floor 9 and felt one immediately feeling – regret. The entire floor was hot. Boiling, uncomfortable hot. Her armour had caused her to immediately become drenched in sweat – the feeling of it driving her to an itching frenzy that she had been constantly reminding herself to ignore. What was worse, was that she was here because of a rumour – a supposed three-headed hound of legend having been spotted somewhere on the floor. She had headed down in search of the beast, learning that there was an information broker somewhere on the floor that had apparently managed to obtain the location of the mythical hound’s lair.

She had spent days scouring the main settlement of Yōgan Village, before learning that the information broker was actually in another village, one atop a volcano that was supposed inactive. Something that Nari didn’t entirely trust. Regardless, she had found herself travelling from the main area, bracing herself against the heat, and desperately avoiding any sort of combat or other players – wanting just to be alone for the time being.

Her third day out, she had found the mountain itself, staring up at it with a groan as she realised she needed to actual climb the piece, before reaching her destination. A slight whimper escaped her lips as she realised just how long of a climb she had before her, and she wondered if all of this was worth it. She was sure there would be some valuable rewards for completing the quest – the rumours had spoken of a subsequent quest, where a new tech skill could be obtained – but Nari was wondering if the climb up the mountain would be similar to that climb she had done long ago, back when she was first preparing herself for this world.

Equipped Items

Dark Fox Tail [Tier 4; Polearm [One-handed Glaive]; Perfect] Standing at 150cm in length from pommel to blade tip, the glaive was crafted with a shaft of intertwining sky blue and dark violet polished wood. The blade, a mere 7cm in width and 45cm in length is a thin dark red colouring. Where the shaft connects with the blade is a metal seating, circular in design and black in colour. Twin tassels hang from the seating, intertwining sky blue and dark violet colours dancing as they move. Upon both sides of the blade, just above where it connects with the shaft, is a small curled white fox.

| Enhancement: Bleed [1 Slots] | Effect: Natural critical attack rolls of 9-10 (1 slot) or natural successful attack rolls of 8-10 (2 slots) deal (12 * Tier) unmitigated bleed damage each enemy turn for 2 turns. Bleed damage does not stack, but can be refreshed. The highest tier of Bleed damage overrides lower tier versions; cannot be overridden by lower-tier versions.
| Enhancement: Accuracy [2 Slots] | Effect: Gain +(1 per slot) to the BD when attacking. Cannot be used to cause a critical hit.

Dark Fox's Reckoning [Tier 4; Heavy/Plate Armour] Forged to be shapely, this piece appears thinner than most pieces of heavy armour - leaving what appear to be openings towards the neckline, and the sides of the torso. Smaller shoulders leave limited protection towards the neck, but allow for greater movement. Coloured a dark violet, the edges of the piece outlined in a shifting soft silver, orange and red colour. Upon the chest's centre stands a white fox, slightly cured with fangs barred, black eyes staring out as if at the individual in front of the piece.

| Enhancement: Recovery [1 Slot] | Effect: Before your post action, make a separate CD roll. On a natural CD7+, regain (1 per slot * Tier) additional energy. This CD roll may also apply to activating the effects of Vamp-Def.

| Enhancement: Heavy Momentum [1 Slot] | Effect: After an unsuccessful attack, gain +(1 per slot * Tier) base damage until your next successful attack, at which point this bonus is removed. Another unsuccessful attack will reactivate this enhancement. Must be using the Heavy Armor Skill for this enhancement to take effect. [For Area of Effect attacks: This effect only activates if you miss all enemies targeted by the attack.]

| Enhancement: Taunt [1 Slot] | Effect: +1 Hate generated from Howl, Focused Howl, and successful attacks.

Dark Fox's Retribution [Tier 4; Celtic Shield] Similar to a wall shield, this piece stands nearly 137cm tall, and nearly 76 cm wide - easily covering the form of a shorter individual. Tapered on the sides, the shield seems to bend inwards slightly on its edges, a perfect opening for an outwardly weapon to be levelled through. The top and bottom edges slightly bend inwards, giving the impression of a less than straight appearance. Coloured in a dark violet, with edges of dark forest green, a white fox, slightly cured with fangs barred is emblazoned on its centre, appearing as if ready to strike.

| Enhancement: Recovery [1 Slot] | Effect: Before your post action, make a separate CD roll. On a natural CD7+, regain (1 per slot * Tier) additional energy. This CD roll may also apply to activating the effects of Vamp-Def.

| Enhancement: Thorns [2 Slots] | Effect: Successful non-critical attacks against you deal (9 * Tier) unmitigated damage to the attacking enemy. Only activates on damage dealing, melee attacks.

The hike up the mountain wasn’t nearly as painful as Nari had been expecting. A well laid pathway, one clearly used for consistent travel to and from the village, had stretched the entire climb. The path had clearly been maintained and upkept for consistent use, and although the climb had a tilt to it, it wasn’t something that Nari would’ve called difficult or uncomfortable to complete. She had been surprised to reach the top of the mountain within only a few hours, far sooner than she had expected.

The village itself hadn’t been anything superbly overwhelming – a small mining town that had little to offer for anyone not visiting for business, whether it be related to the mining or something more nefarious. Most of the village had nothing to offer to Nari – whose only interest had been in finding information leading towards the hound’s lair.

It hadn’t taken her long – a few quick questions around the area, and she had been directed towards an information broker whom had apparently not only located the lair, but had also encountered the beasts – and survived. A fact that was not lost on Nari, as she headed for the small hut that the info broker had apparently been staying at, determined to pull the information from him quickly before leaving this place behind. There were far too many people here – NPC and player alike – for Nari’s comfort right now, and she wanted nothing more than to be done with the place.

The traverse across the village didn’t take long, and as she wandered up towards the hut, intending to knock on the front entrance, a voice called out to her from the shadows of the building’s edge. “Are you here looking for information about Cerberus?”

“Are you here looking for information about Cerberus?” The voice called from the shadows of the building, drawing her attention, as the glaive shifted ever so slightly in her arm. She knew that the area was considered safe, but…

Glancing at the figure, she saw a man matching the description she’d received of the broker – and beneath his somewhat revealing shirt, she could see the bandages that signified he had recently engaged in something dangerous. Deciding this was likely her info broker, Nari stepped towards him, letting the glaive roll forward slightly in the crook of her arm, providing easier access to the weapon should this suddenly turn bad for her.

“I am. Do you know anything about it?” She kept her questions controlled in her mind, for the time being. First, she needed to figure out if this man truly knew anything – then she would focus on the more demanding questions, ones that could lead to a change in her ability to complete this quest without problem.

“I do. I came across the beasts while I was out wandering the wilds looking for Cerberus’ location. I…escaped, but not without a warning that I won’t forget.” The man waved a hand towards his chest, as if trying to draw attention to the bandages. Nari kept her gaze on him, waiting to see if he would willingly provide more information without requiring any further prodding. “I never did find Cerberus itself, but…the hounds must be part of its pack. They were engulfed in flame…and they seemed almost hellish in nature.”

The man seemed to shiver as he spoke, as if memories were causing a chill in his spine. Nari shifted on her feet, considering the information for a moment, before prodding further. “Do you know how many of these…minions…there are? Does Cerberus have two, four, or more at his calling?”

Depending on how difficult these things were, she could probably face one or two of them alone, but anything more than that and she might be in trouble. She considered the situation as the NPC continued speaking, trying to focus on what was being said to her.

“I saw two, but I’m sure there would be more inside the cave itself.” The mention of the cave caught Nari’s attention, her interest snapping back to the conversation at hand. A cave, that meant that she’d be walking into a possible trap area – something she would need to be very careful of. Caves could have only one exit, which means that she may get into a situation where she couldn’t physically make her way back out.

“So, where is this cave? How far away?” Nari listened as the info broker provided her detailed directions out of the village, and down the path way to where the cave could eventually be found. The directions were far better than she could have expected, even from an info broker.

Deciding she had obtained everything she possibly could from the man, she gave her thanks before turning and making her way back out of the village, determined to make her way to the bottom of the mountain, at the very least, before the day was over. She figured it was about a two hour walk from the base of the mountain to the location that the info broker had provided her, and she wasn’t going to waste time sitting around here. ‘There’s a hound to hunt, so let’s get to the hunt.’

The climb down the mountain had been as enthralling as the climb up – which is to say, not in the least. The winding path led her back to the base, the daylight slowly beginning to dwindle as the early evening started it’s arrival. Glancing around, Nari spotted a relatively shelter alcove along the edge of the mountain’s base. Deciding she had no better place to stay – she had, of course, left the village behind – she moved to the alcove, settling in as comfortably as she could.

The heat and exhaustion of the climb taking over her, it wasn’t long before Nari found herself drifting off, trusting in the little fox to watch over her.

Nari woke hours later, the light of the magma rivers causing a red shimmer on the otherwise black night sky. She wasn’t sure what had driven her from her sleep this time – lately it had been a collection of nightmares, or assorted feelings of guilt and regret. Gazing up into the dark sky, the shifting red around her drawing her into an almost trance like state, Nari thought back on the promise she had made.

‘One of these days, I’m going to have to complete that promise…’ Her gut tightened at the thought – she wasn’t sure she was ready for that. She knew that she had been putting it off, refusing to message either of them. The guilt of it all was still clinging to her, and although she had spent some time alone now – how long had it been? Days? Weeks? Months? – she also knew that sooner or later she would have to confront her guilt and fear.

Time passed as Nari laid on the hot ground, considering everything. She wasn’t sure how long she’d been awake – she tended to ignore the clock if she could, going off the general time of day instead – but, she knew she wouldn’t be getting back to sleep, regardless of how much more nighttime there may be.

Forcing herself slowly to her feet – the world spinning for a moment as the heat and general tiredness took hold of her – Nari turned on the direction laid out by the info broker, dragging herself forwards.

The heat barring down on her cause Nari’s mood to plummet – her emotions almost mirrored by the fox on her shoulder that seemed to suffer as much, if not more, than Nari herself was. Dragging her feet along, forcing herself along the path – less of a path, in itself, and more just a winding piece of unmelted rock beside the flowing motes of lava – Nari cursed the floor for what she felt was the thousandth time.

‘This whole venture better be worth it. I swear, if I nearly melt to death for something as worthless as a few EXP points, or a pat on the back, I’m going to be livid.’ The dreary thoughts continued to pound down on her, turning her mood sourer with every passing moment. She had already considered turning back, returning to her estate and simply holing up in her bedroom, when she found herself face to face with the end of the pathway she had been following.

Nari felt her entire self falter. Her body and will giving in at the same time as she realised she had hit a dead end. Her gaze, empty and disconnected, stares out over the flowing river that cut her off from any forward movement – and worse, no sign of any cave laid ahead. The feeling of defeat washed over her, and she felt herself slump inwards, accepting that she had failed.

Shakily pulling herself to her feet, fighting back tears that threatened to rush down her face, Nari leaned on her glaive, using the weapon as a support. Slowly, carefully, she hobbled her way back up the pathway that she had been following, making her way back towards the mountain’s base, her mind empty of thought beyond the fact that she had failed.

Her feet followed the path, her mind dissociated from the world around her. As such, it was with sudden surprise that Nari noticed she was no longer in the open air. Glancing around, she found herself in a cavern, the outside visible a few dozen steps behind her. She could see the path she had originally taken – and a divulge in it that she had originally missed, visible only from the return angle she had taken to head back to the settlement.

The suddenness of her success caused Nari to stop for a moment, taking in the accident that had occurred, and the sudden joy she felt. She hadn’t failed after all, she’d found it – maybe. She felt a shift in the air around her, as if something moving nearby had caused a slight breeze. Spinning around, Nari found herself staring down the face of a large canine like creature, surrounded by flames bright enough to force her to squint in the dark cave.

“Easy…easy doggie…” Nari slowly pushed the glaive out of the crook of her arm and into her hand, letting it gently roll down her forearm before catching the shaft in a loose grip. “Easssyyy…..”

Growling caught her attention, and Nari watched as a second beast emerged from behind the first, teeth bared. Nari shifted her left foot backwards, bringing her shield up. The heat still pulsing against her, she readied herself for the fight she knew was coming.

A single growl shifting into a bark was the only warning that Nari had of the wolf’s sudden intent to launch itself towards her. Shifting to her left, she slammed the blade of her glaive forward, the soft violet light of the sword art barely registering against the light erupting from the flames on the wolf itself. Her glaive slammed into the beast, forcing it off to the side and down to the ground where it remained, unable to move for the moment, before suddenly erupting into a thousand shards.

The second creature – which had leapt forward mere seconds after the first appeared to trip over the lead beast, stumbling off to the side and unable to pull itself back towards Nari before she brought her shield up and around. Wasting no time, she spun the glaive, letting it sail through the air towards the second creature, hoping to quickly finish off the beast before it had any time to make a true attempt against her.

Silence fell upon the cave as Nari watched the second beast explode into shards, the light dimming slightly as the flames from its body disappeared. Breathing heavily, she cursed the heat of this area again, feeling the oppression of it against her lungs. She wondered if removing her armour would be a good idea – and then immediately decided against it, determining that if she did get into another fight, she’d need it.

‘And this is the hounds’ den, best to remain prepared. Never know when more of them will show up…although, they do seem easy to spot, at least.’ She shifted her gaze around, not spotting any immediate signs of further threats, at least for the moment. Feeling herself tipping on her feet, she collapsed to the ground, deciding to lay down for a bit while it was safe to do so. ‘Before you completely collapse from exhaustion. I need to be careful in this heat. Letting it overcome me could be disastrous – especially with how little I’ve been sleeping…’

Once she felt more rest, Nari climbed to her feet again – the heat still pressing in on her from all sides, still wearing away at her. Heaving herself onwards, she began following the cavern deeper – wondering all the time if she’d find something more difficult within. Her first encounter with the creatures had been…well, Nari had to admit, easy. She wasn’t sure if that was a sign of her own skill and strength increasing, or…if the quest itself was truly that simple. She decided she’d prefer the former, and simply accepted it at that.

Her foot steps echoing through the cave, she wondered if she’d really even have to search for the hounds – or if they’d simply come to her, and make it easy. She felt herself giggling at the concept, imaging simply swiping them all away with a single swing of her glaive – a sudden realisation that she was losing it, if only slightly. Shaking her head, she decided she needed to rest for just a few more minutes more, plopping herself down on the ground and leaning back against the wall. Resting her head backwards, she closed her eyes, hoping to get a few moments of relief before continuing onwards.

Her eyes snapped open as she heard the sounds of clattering rocks. She wasn’t sure how long she had been out for – she’d actually managed to fall asleep, something that came as a surprise to her. Eyes darting around, she looked for any signs of the hounds, or other threats in the area. Nothing strode out of the dark towards her, and after a few moments of heightened searching, she let herself relax slightly.

Staring at the ground before her, she wondered at her ability to suddenly fall asleep in what could have been a very dangerous area. The realisation of it caused a shiver to run through her. She could’ve been in serious danger if she hadn’t been startled awake.

‘When I get back, I’m forcing myself to rest for a week. Maybe two. I can’t let these mistakes cost me.’ Nodding inwardly towards herself, she forced herself to her feet turning to carry on down the cave as she felt her strength somewhat returning to her. Deep within, she heard a familiar growling, directly in the path she was heading.

The soft red glow of the magma rivers threw a dance of shifting light across the cave tunnel that Nari had been following. The growl – directly ahead of her – had formed into more than just an audible sound; the shape of the hound slowly pulling itself from the shadows at the length of her vision.

Nari gave a slight tilt of her head towards the creature, before pulling herself into her combat stand. Shield held before her, the glaive lowered and level, Nari waited for the beast to approach, ready to intercept its intended strike should it attempt to attack her.

Moments passed as the two waited, a tension in the air as each clearly wanted the other to move first. Nari held herself steady, knowing that her strength laid in allowing her opponent the first strike. ‘Hold. Retaliation. Hold. Retaliation.’

The words were an echoing mantra in her head, pulled for all her days of martial arts training. She had lived by this code, for so long. It felt… odd, to actually apply it now. And yet, somehow it felt right as well.

A single jab of the glaive was all it took for the hound to explode into thousands of shards. The fight over before it had even begun, Nari felt a tinge of disappointment. Sure, she had grown stronger over the past while, but she hadn’t expected this to be so easy. The fight had barely taken any effort at all, and as she glanced about – she realised it was truly over.

Sighing to herself, she hoisted the glaive back into the crook of her arm, taking one last look at the spot the hound had stood on before exploding. ‘Is this how it is for all the front liners? Is that why they’re so… ‘

Tossing aside the line of thought, Nari forced herself onwards, deciding that there was nothing more to do than to finish this quest as quickly as possible. Her disappointment in the situation could be dealt with later, if the need still arose.

The pathway led on for a few minutes further, before opening into a large cavernous area. In its centre ran three rivers of magma, the fiery red flow casting a glow bright enough to light the area. A small centre island laid off in the distance, surrounded on all sides by the flowing rivers – just wide enough that Nari figured she could leap across and safely land on the other side. Laying on the platform was a hunched dog-like creature, slightly larger than the hounds she had previously encountered on her stroll through the area.

Nari paused at the entry to the cavern, considering her options. She figured that this was likely the beast she was meant to face – the hound known as Cerberus. Based on what she had encountered thus far, she wasn’t too worried about the creature, likely it wouldn’t be much more dangerous than what she had already encountered.

‘But, you’re tired. Your energy hasn’t fully returned. And you don’t know for sure exactly how easy this will be. Maybe…give it a moment.’

Nari felt herself hesitate as the possibilities ran through her mind. The inaction began to drive an itch into her, and Nari found herself crossing the area, her feet moving as if under a will of their own. She stopped at the edge of the closest river of magma, gauging the distance. Taking a few steps back, she rushed the distance, leaping at the last second and drifting through the air. Rolling as she hit the other side, she brought herself into a standing position, waiting to see what the creature would do.

Her immediately presence seemed to go unnoticed, and Nari wondered for a moment if she had managed to sneak up on it – or if it had already been defeated. ‘There wouldn’t be a body if it was already defeated. It’s likely waiting for you to make a mistake, to come too close. Wait for it to make the first move.’

Willing to wait as long as required, Nari settled into a comfortable ready pose, her shield lowered slightly, ready to spring up if the creature made a sudden leap towards her. The glaive rested loosely in her hand, the tip angled towards the beast, prepared to act as picket should it come too close.

The soft shake of its fur was the first indication Nari had of the beast’s awakening. A single head shifted into view, sniffing at the air. As Nari watched, she noticed something off about the position of the neck. Suddenly a second head lifted, and a third. Slowly, as if with exaggerated carefulness, it turned to face the woman, the flaming eyes bearing down on her. Nari held her ground, waiting as it climbed to its feet. Waiting as it turned to face her, the three heads begin to growl in an uneven tone. Waiting, as it took one careful step towards her.

She was ready when its leap towards her came, shifting herself slightly to allow it to sail passed, spinning with the movement to face it. A quick dance of heads and metal began, as Nari tried to draw it into a better position to strike out against. As she saw the middle head rear backwards, she took her chance, letting the glaive lunge forward in an attempt to catch the left head off guard.

The head exploded as the glaive slammed into it, the thorns within lashing out and piercing it from numerous angles, causing a shimmer of shards to float through the air before disappearing. The other two heads pulled back, howling in unison at the pain and loss it must have been feeling. Nari ducked behind her shield, waiting for the strikes she knew was coming.

But, as nothing slammed into her shield, she pulled herself out from behind it, seeing the creature glaring at her dangerously. It appeared to be waiting for just such a moment, and launched itself towards her suddenly, both heads rushing forwards in an attempt to get past her defences. In response, Nari brought her glaive up and around, trying to catch the far right head as it came for her, hoping that she could quickly disperse of it before it became a true threat to her. ‘Almost too easy…’

The assault caused Nari to pull her attack, forcing her behind her shield as the heads tried to gain an advantage on her. She felt herself being pushed back, and quickly shifted to the side, forcing a sudden dance around the attacks that the creature tried to barrage her with. Although she was unable to get her own strikes out in return, she held her own, the beast unable to land anything of consequence against her.

Eventually, it pulled away, giving her the breathing room she needed to resettle herself. Deciding that she had enough with being a punching bag, Nari went on the offensive, rushing forwards and letting her glaive sail through the air, swinging it in a wide arc towards the same head she had been hoping to diminish earlier. She watched as the blade began to glow violet, causing a shimmer in the air where it passed through, directing it towards the target.

The dual heads slammed into her, breaking past her meagre defences as she attempted to wildly swing her weapon towards them. She felt the heat sore through her body as the flames erupted on her, causing far more damage than the simple bite had. Nari felt herself stifle a scream, holding back as she pulled herself out of the grasp of the heads. Curses erupting from her, she stepped away from the beast, trying to calm herself. ‘Losing control now won’t help, you need to re-centre yourself. Get control.’

The beast seemed to wait a moment, as if taunting her. Nari pushed against the emotions that were threatening to take control, slowly feeling the calmness returned. The moment it had, she shifted her feet, preparing to launch herself at the creature again, knowing that now she had no choice but to end this as quickly as possible. The flames still burning against her, and she knew that in time it would whittle her down in a dangerous way.

Her glaive lashed out, catching both heads and forcing them backwards – where they held in place, the stun effect giving Nari a chance to recuperate slightly. Her health bar dropped further as the flames did their damage, before disappearing – something that she was thankful for. It had already become uncomfortable how much health she’d lost already. She gave herself a moment to collect her breath, before pulling the shield back up, resting the glaive’s shaft along the top portion of it.

She waited, trying to gauge exactly when the stun would wear off, the slight twitch giving it away. Seeing her chance, she rushed forwards once more, trying to end the fight now that she had the advantage, her blade flashing violet as it swung out towards the right head again, hoping to bring her opponent down in size once more. She was almost there, she could feel it, just a little bit longer.
