It had been a day, that was for sure. Nari had looked forward to this moment – being alone, in her room, without anyone trying to bug her or gain something from her. She sighed, enjoying the moment of peace and quiet, scrolling through her inventory and categorising the materials and goods she still needed to have appraised. The list was growing longer, something that she knew she’d been putting off for far too long…she’d have to fix that shortly, before it became too expensive.

Her hand stopped and her eyes squinted as she saw something new in her inventory – an item that she didn’t recognise, and appeared to already have been appraised. “The hell is this…?”

Pulling it from her inventory, the scroll appears in her hand, causing only more confusion for Nari. She didn’t recognise the piece, something she felt she would’ve the moment she’d picked it up. She unrolled the parchment, quickly realising that there were two pieces within it. ‘A map and…is this a journal page?’

Her eyes glanced over the two pieces, taking them in as she tried to figure out the mystery of all this. A few moments passed, before she finally gave up, sighing to herself and placing the two papers on her night table. Putting the whole thing to the side for the moment, Nari decided that sleep would help with everything – or so she hoped.

Equipped Items

Länn Síonnäch Gheímhrídh [Tier 4; Polearm [One-handed Assault Spear]; Demonic] Standing at nearly 120 cm in length from tip to tip, this short spear contains a metallic-appearing shaft of shifting dark and light violet, twirling in a mesmerising pattern. The blade - connected by a metal collar of a blackness similar to a void - glints with an ice blue colouring, a shift of light violet visible in the surface at the right angle. Twin wrapped lengths of cord - a combination of ice blue and dark violet - hang from the metal collar, intertwining in a mesmerising pattern when in movement. Both sides of the blade, just above the collar, contain a curled white fox, the dark black eyes staring outwards.

| Enhancement: Paralyze [2 Slots] | Effect: Natural critical attack rolls of 9-10 (1 slot) or natural successful attack rolls of 8-10 (2 slots) remove the enemy’s action on their next turn. Paralyzed opponents lose any evasion properties.
| Enhancement: Accuracy [2 Slots] | Effect: Gain +(1 per slot) to the BD when attacking. Cannot be used to cause a critical hit.

Dark Fox's Reckoning [Tier 4; Heavy/Plate Armour] Forged to be shapely, this piece appears thinner than most pieces of heavy armour - leaving what appear to be openings towards the neckline, and the sides of the torso. Smaller shoulders leave limited protection towards the neck, but allow for greater movement. Coloured a dark violet, the edges of the piece outlined in a shifting soft silver, orange and red colour. Upon the chest's centre stands a white fox, slightly cured with fangs barred, black eyes staring out as if at the individual in front of the piece.

| Enhancement: Recovery [1 Slot] | Effect: Before your post action, make a separate CD roll. On a natural CD7+, regain (1 per slot * Tier) additional energy. This CD roll may also apply to activating the effects of Vamp-Def.

| Enhancement: Heavy Momentum [1 Slot] | Effect: After an unsuccessful attack, gain +(1 per slot * Tier) base damage until your next successful attack, at which point this bonus is removed. Another unsuccessful attack will reactivate this enhancement. Must be using the Heavy Armor Skill for this enhancement to take effect. [For Area of Effect attacks: This effect only activates if you miss all enemies targeted by the attack.]

| Enhancement: Taunt [1 Slot] | Effect: +1 Hate generated from Howl, Focused Howl, and successful attacks.

Dark Fox's Retribution [Tier 4; Celtic Shield] Similar to a wall shield, this piece stands nearly 137cm tall, and nearly 76 cm wide - easily covering the form of a shorter individual. Tapered on the sides, the shield seems to bend inwards slightly on its edges, a perfect opening for an outwardly weapon to be levelled through. The top and bottom edges slightly bend inwards, giving the impression of a less than straight appearance. Coloured in a dark violet, with edges of dark forest green, a white fox, slightly cured with fangs barred is emblazoned on its centre, appearing as if ready to strike.

| Enhancement: Recovery [1 Slot] | Effect: Before your post action, make a separate CD roll. On a natural CD7+, regain (1 per slot * Tier) additional energy. This CD roll may also apply to activating the effects of Vamp-Def.

| Enhancement: Thorns [2 Slots] | Effect: Successful non-critical attacks against you deal (9 * Tier) unmitigated damage to the attacking enemy. Only activates on damage dealing, melee attacks.

The morning light shone through the curtains on the window, forcing Nari to wakefulness. She rolled over, her eyes falling upon the map and parchment still laying on the bedside table where she had left it. For a few minutes, she did nothing but stare at the two pages, trying to figure out where the pieces had come from. She couldn’t remember ever having picking up the two pieces, but there was no denying their existence now.

Giving up her futile attempt of discovering the secret of their sudden appearance, Nari picked up the pieces, deciding to review the piece that appeared to be a journal entry of some sort. Her eyes roamed over the piece, slowly taking in the words. Her eyes shifted to the map, suddenly understanding the connection between the two pieces.

‘A map…to a dragon’s lair?’ Nari had to admit, it sounded…interesting. The moment the thought crossed her mind, a sudden dialogue box appeared before her, offering a quest titled Diary of the Dragon Hunter. Nari stared at it for a second before hitting the accept button.

Glancing at the map again, Nari realised a familiar aspect to it. Studying it closer, she realised the familiar location of the first floor, a location she had once visited. She figured that with some searching, she could likely find the actual lair quite easily.

Realising the excitement in her, she jumped out of bed and rushed to get ready, going through her morning routine with speed in an attempt to get on her way. As she finished her meagre breakfast, she brought up her menu, considering messaging NIGHT or Koga, or maybe even Bismuth. The consideration died almost as quickly as it had risen – she’d had quite enough of people for now.

The dazzling light disappeared slowly from her vision, the teleporter pad almost appearing to shimmer as she stepped off it. She looked around, taking in the sights of the Town of Beginnings. It had been a long time since she’d been here. So much had transpired in the time since she had decided to leave this place for good. She hadn’t expected to return.

The town itself appeared much as it had when Nari had first left it, a mixture of NPCs and those players who’s remained behind rushing to and from whatever they needed to do. She paused mid step as she saw a flash of gold off to her right. The girl seemed to pause, eyeing something in Nari’s direction, the emerald green eyes seeming to glance across her momentarily before she carried on.

Nari shook herself. Something about those eyes…putting it to the side for the moment, she turned back to her task at hand – finding the dragon’s lair. Heading off in the direction of the wilds beyond the Town of Beginnings, nodding to the guard as she left the safe zone. ‘Here we go, again…’

The sun was shining brightly as Nari stepped out into the wilds of the first floor. She could see the numerous packs of wolves and boars, roaming the area in a carefree manner. Most of these creatures seemed so pitiful to her now, and as she wandered across the open areas, she thought back to the days when she had actually been concerned with fighting them. It was a far cry difference from her situation now, where she was considering taking on dragons – and alone, too.

She took a moment to watch as a few lower levelled players encircled one of the boars, lashing out at it and dodging its return strikes. She could see their concentration, their will to win. And for a moment, she felt herself giggling. It was a sight to see, realising the difference that they would face should they continue upwards through the floors, the way in which they would – like her – look back and realise just how things changed with time.

Memories flooded her for a moment, and Nari forced herself to glance about the fields in search of any materials she could use, trying to draw her attention away from what her mind tried to bombard her with. Shaking off the feelings of the past, Nari left her position of watchfulness, striding deeper into the wilds, following the path laid out by the map.

Her walk had carried her directly to a collection of the shiny metallic materials she needed so much in her crafting profession. She smiled as she collected the pieces, glancing about again before continuing along her way – always keeping her eyes open for anything that glinted as she wandered past, willing to make slight detours if it would provide her with something as useful as materials. ‘Something I can always use, no matter how many I have.’

She hummed a small tune from her days in the real world as she continued, trying to maintain the happy emotional state that had taken over her. Her mind drifted towards the quest itself, wondering exactly what she would find within a dragon’s laid. She knew only what the entry had told her, which was little at best.

“Maybe there’s going to be a giant pile of col, and materials? Wouldn’t that be nice, Yuki? Crafting for days…” The small fox gave a half chitter in response. Nari assumed it was either an agreement, or a statement of annoyance at having her sleep interrupted. Nari preferred the former, accepting it in her mind without further consideration. She continued wandering, casting glances around and thinking about the large pile of loot that she was likely to find.

Reaching the point on the floor where she recognised the terrain drawn on the map, Nari knew that she would now need to start the difficult piece – finding the actual lair. The low hanging mountains seemed to surround her here, and Nari knew that somewhere within them would be the lair she was looking for. Now she just had to…find it. ‘No big deal, right? It must be somewhere near the tops…of those peaks…somewhere. Just, look for a giant hole. That’s a sure sign, dragons like caves, right?’

Her skepticism didn’t need to be spoken aloud, so plainly written on her face. She had no idea what sort of lair this dragon would exist within, and from her experience with the fantastical side of creation, well, it could be anything. Sighing to herself, she decided there was only one way to find it – feet moving forward, and eyes searching everywhere. Maybe she would stumble across it by accident, if she was lucky.

Nari blinked twice as she started stepping towards the closest mountain area, half expecting this endeavour to take all day, if not all week. A flash of golden brown colouring off to her left caught her attention. What she first assumed was just more materials, turned out to be something far different. Suddenly shifting and heading back into the cavern it had been standing in front of, Nari realised what she had seen – a dragon. An actual, dragon. Her heart raced – not with fear, but with excitement – as she began shifting her direction, beginning an ascent that would bring her towards the cave, about halfway up the mountain she had first passed.

The climb itself proved to be strenuous, and Nari found herself pausing many times during her ascent, having to catch her breath and otherwise rest. It took her hours before she reached the edge of the cave itself, and already the sun had shifted in the sky – signalling that sooner, rather than later, night would begin to fall. Nari didn’t like the prospect of being out here in the dark, especially with a dragon somewhere nearby – one whose intention was not known to her at this time. Pausing on the edge of the entrance, she thought about her options, considering whether she should push onwards, or take the safer approach and wait for the morning.

Pulling her spear in against her shoulder, she made her decision. A single breath outwards, and she took her step into the cave, hoping she was making the right decision.

The tunnel itself was relatively well lit, small holes allowing light to filter in from above. The tunnel itself wasn’t long, and Nari soon found herself in an open area, large enough to house her estate. On the far side, she saw a shimmer of topaz, reflecting the light that came in from the ceiling. The area was barren, aside from what was obviously once a nest – but had recently see some sort of conflict.

Approaching carefully, Nari called out in an attempt to not surprise the beast. Her voice caused a sudden lurch in the form before her, and the dragon stumbled to its legs, letting out a roar that sounded almost pitiful. Nari’s eyes ranged along the body, seeing the multitude of lacerations and wounds along the belly of the beast. Behind it, she could see another form – this one unmoving, a testament to the loss that had been felt here.

Without any real thought, Nari felt herself slowly fall to a knee, letting her spear gentle lower to the ground, and bowing her head. She remained there, silent, for a moment as she held her breath. She knew it was a dangerous thing to do, and yet…somehow it felt right.

Her actions were rewarded as a voice suddenly spoke out – rough, intelligent, and somehow full of despair all at the same time. Nari raised her eyes to look at the beast, which had pulled in on itself, no longer standing, the energy seeming to have dissipated from its body.

“Why have you come here, human? What could you possibly want?” Nari wondered the same thing. She wasn’t sure why she was here, originally, but now…now she wanted to know what had caused such a magnificent beast such harm.

“I…followed a map, left by a hunter, I think. I don’t know why I came here, perhaps…perhaps hoping to find treasure, or goods. But I didn’t expect to find…” Her words stopped as she looked past the dragon, settling on the form behind it. She wasn’t sure what she expected to happen, but the sudden explanation of the situation was not it.

Nari listened, as the dragon explained how it had been attacked, how its young were stolen, taken away by another. As the dragon completed its story – which included, to Nari’s relief, the actual location of the other dragon – it asked for her help. There was a desperation in the voice as it almost begged for Nari to assist it, and she felt her heart yearn suddenly.

Nodding, Nari stood, gathering her spear and standing as tall as she could before the beast. “I will search for your younglings, and return them to safety. I will also exact revenge for what has been done here, no matter what it costs.”

The fresh air and sunlight were almost a blessing to Nari as she exited the tunnels. She had thought for sure that she had been in there for hours, but the sun had barely moved – a good sign, for her. The location that the dragon had pointed out wasn’t far, and Nari began her descent, wanting to get this all over and done with as quickly as possible. She was a little disappointed that there was no immediate sign of any loot, and found herself getting side tracked trying to scrounge up something of worth through her foraging abilities.

Her mind went to the brutality of the system, how it had taken something so beautiful, and eviscerated it. For what? A simple quest, one that would likely have her being as abusive to another creature designed by Cardinal. A moment of disgust washed over her, and Nari felt herself stumble. Reaching out with her spear, she managed to steady herself before tumbling completely. Her eyes lit with a rage, and she made a vow to herself. ‘I will end this game, one way or another.’

She felt the anger rush through her, and she had to stop to push it back down. Now wasn’t the time to allow something so trivial so much control over her. For now, she needed to keep her mind on the promise she had made to the dragon she had just met.

The walk down the mountain somehow felt like it took far longer than it had when she had ascended it. By the time Nari had reached the base of the mountain, she found herself enveloped in the growing darkness of evening.

Realising it would be foolish to push on any further, Nari instead pulled herself off the main path, finding a nice little nook in a small copse of trees. Settling in and creating a small fire, Nari thought about her life here – how she had started to truly settle. Things had begun to become normal – even sitting by a fire in the woods, chasing a dragon. For a time, she wondered if she should be worried about that, or if it was just her adjusting to the current norm, allowing her to survive better.

The sunset had begun to glitter in earnest as Nari cooked her dinner. From her shoulder, Yuki emerged to munch on the small bits of foods that Nari let fall into the fox’s reach. The two spend some time in silence, Nari focused on preparing the evening meal, while Yuki simply enjoyed the extra bits that were thrown her way.

Once dinner had been completed, Nari spent some time watching the sparkling that were supposed to be stars in the night sky. It had been a long time since she’d seen actual stars, but it was one of the things in this world that she knew would never truly set in as ‘normal’. Something about the way they shined in the sky, the lack of character to them, or just the fact that they appeared as nothing more than distant lights, meant that for Nari – there was no confusing them with the real thing.

The exhaustion from the day eventually taking over her, she pulled out her blankets and laid down to rest, trusting as usual that Yuki would wake her if any danger arose.

The morning sun brought a rude awakening to Nari’s sleep. She felt herself cursing the light from beneath her blankets, wishing for the first time that she had stayed home rather than heading out on this quest. Sighing in frustration and tossing the blankets off, she forced herself up, beginning the day by clearing away her sleeping arrangements.

Once she had cleaned up her little camp, Nari continued her journey down towards the ravine that had been pointed out to her. The morning passed quickly, and she found the trails empty – aside from the few smaller animals she passed, most disappearing as soon as they realised she was near.

Cresting the rise before her, the area opens up to a field split by uneven terrain; rocks jutting skyward, and a ring of large stones surrounding what appeared to be a nesting area. Nari peered towards what she assumed would be the nest, spotting a glimmer of topaz against the skyline.

Confident that she had found the spot she was looking for, Nari pushed herself onwards, wondering just how difficult facing a dragon would be.

Nari’s approach was far less stealthy than she likely would’ve preferred. She had barely made it within the inner circle of the area when a figure slipped overhead, circling high up before descending to land before her. Where the original dragon had seemed dangerous, yet somehow also vulnerable, this second one appeared only threatening. Nari watched as it landed in the way of her continued path, slamming into the ground and growling at her.

“What are you doing here, human?” The voice growled the question, and Nari wondered for a moment if she could possibly talk her way through this quest. A flash of the dragon’s wounds back in the cave erased that possibility from Nari’s mind almost as quickly as it had first appeared. ‘No, no I won’t speak with my words. For you…for you, I will speak with my blade.’

“I’ve come to end you, Youngling Thief. I have come to exact revenge upon one who dares to kidnap those who cannot defend themselves, who leaves nothing but pain and suffering behind.”

The dragon reared backwards at Nari’s words, seemingly taken aback by the abruptness of her announcement. Almost immediately Nari noticed the shift in name, the appearance of the health bars. The battle was beginning. Pulling her shield up, Nari let her spear fall into the palm of her hand – the feel of the shorter polearm far more comfortable in her grasp than the glaive had ever been. It all felt right to Nari, as she turned her attention to the beast before her.

This wouldn’t be just any fight, Nari had a vendetta to deal with now – a hatred for what Cardinal had created. Her grip on her spear tightened as the images of the injured dragon flashed through her mind, the thought of the youngling being stolen away. Something within Nari turned cold, and she took a single step towards the dragon in front of her, readying herself for the vengeance she would lay upon it.

Her spear slammed into the snout of the dragon, the violet flash causing the dragon to rear back and freeze as the paralysis took hold. Nari side stepped as she looked for the opening that would let her unleash on the creature. She knew that those scales were providing a real hinderance to her ability to drag down the beast’s health points.

Remembering the new skill she had recently collected, Nari knew it was time to test out the capabilities of it. Drawing her spear along the edge of her shield, she placed her feet apart, readying her body for the leap she was going to need to properly hit the creature before her.

She felt the calmness spread through her as she realised that the encounter was going far easier than she had originally expected. ‘Apparently defeating a dragon isn’t nearly as difficult as one would assume…at least, it’s far easier than I had assumed it would be.’

Nari watched with a smile as her spear slammed through the protective scales on the body of the dragon. Carsar was proving to be far less of a challenge than she had assumed it would be, and she felt herself celebrating even as the beast took to the air, attempting to get out of reach of her attacks – a clearly desperate act. Nari settled in behind her shield, her spear angled upwards, waiting for the beast to swoop down and attempt to attack her.

Her eyes tracked the flight pattern of the beast, watching for any signs that it was about to change course and move towards her. Her body waited, patiently, her muscles putting up no protest at the position she held. Just as she was starting to wonder if it would simply fly off, the beast suddenly turned, banking downwards on a path straight for her. A smile came to Nari’s face as she readied herself, wondering if she could finish it with a single blow.

The dragon exploded into thousands of shards as Nari’s spear lunged forward, the thorns hidden within slamming through the head of the beast before the health point gauge hit zero. Nari held the pose for a moment, her eyes almost unfocused as she breathed deeply. The fight had ended quickly - the dragon not even laying a single claw on her as they danced their twirl of murder. Nari was almost disappointed – before remembering how dangerous that line of thought could be. Shaking off the sudden stiffness in her muscles, she decided to scour the area a bit, determined to find some sort of loot from the dragon’s likely stash.

She could see the main nesting area, where a few smaller topaz dragon like creatures seemed to watch her. She decided to scour the areas around the outside, figuring that the beast likely would not have left its valuables in reach of anything else.

Her search around the outside of the nest proved to be futile. There were no signs of any sort of goods, at least none that she was finding. Scowling, she wondered if there was anything to begin with – she assumed there must be, because dragons were known to keep such goods around. But she had no actual proof of that, other than her own understanding of mythical creatures. Perhaps Cardinal had decided to leave out that one minor detail of the beasts? It seemed unlikely to Nari, and yet her argument against it thus far had been…well, in vain.

Deciding that it was time to hit the nest, Nari moved across to the centre area. The small dragonlings seemed to recoil slightly at her approach, and Nari realised the poor things must be terrified. “It’s okay…I’m here to bring you back home…you’re safe now.”

She hadn’t expected her words to actually provide any comfort, but the small creatures seemed to take comfort in them. Seemingly less timid, Nari felt more comfortable moving into the nest – spotting immediately the large egg, topaz coloured and clearly what she had been sent to recover.

Smiling as she found the treasure collection within the nest itself, Nari quickly collected the col and materials, locating a small piece of parchment alongside it all. A quick glance showed her that more of these lairs seemed to exist, as if there was one on each floor. Unsure of what it all meant, she pocketed away the piece before collecting the egg.

Turning to the dragonling’s, she ushered them back the way she had come from – hoping to be done with this quest as quickly as possible, now that the hard part was out of the way. She gave one last look over the nest, making sure she hadn’t missed anything, before following the dragonlings back down the path.

Although she had never been a fan of children in general, Nari had to admit the walk back with the dragonlings had been rather entertaining. Numerous times over they had tried to take flight, skittering along before being forced to land. She had needed to herd them like cats in order to get them back properly, and it had been slow going.

As she had entered the cave once more, the adult dragon that she had left behind lifted their head. Nari saw that most of the wounds had disappeared – likely healed over time, although she hadn’t been gone that long. A look of surprise, replaced by awe and excitement took over the dragon’s features.

“I do not know how…how you have done this…but thank you.” Nari simply nodded, no words coming to her in the moment. She placed the topaz egg on the floor before the dragon, watching as it gently nuzzled the egg. A sudden crack erupted on it, and Nari worried for a moment that she had somehow broken the egg on her travels.

As she watched, something slammed through the egg’s top, a cry erupting as it did so. Nari felt a tightness in her heart as she realised what she had just witnessed, the words of the dragon lost to the background. Blinking away tears, she realised that the dragon had offered her something – a small gem, a topaz. Accepting it hesitantly, Nari nodded once more, not entirely sure what the gem was for, but happy with what she had done here. Turning, she wiped away a single tear as she made her way back home.
