[F05 - SP] The Colosseum | <<Butcher in the Sands>>

Recommended Posts

Nari had received notification from one of her information broker friends about a sudden shifting of sands in the deserts of floor five. Normally, she wouldn’t have cared less about such a change in the weather – or the landscape – but, it had apparently unearthed some sort of ruins that were worth taking a deep dive into. She had put off following up with it until a secondary source had confirmed it. And so, Nari had found herself stepping off the teleporter pad on the fifth floor once more, her steps leading her out into the wilds in search of the colosseum.

Her travels had brought her to the area known as the Calmest Badlands – a name that Nari attributed only to the fact that it appeared far more stagnant than it likely was. She had debated upon entering the area at first, considering the rumours that none had returned, but curiosity and the urge to find the colosseum quickly had overcome worry, and so she had stepped into the terrain without hesitation.

“Keep an eye out for any traps, won’t you Yuki?” The fox hummed in response, something that Nari considered must be a sound of agreement. Content with the response, she strode forward – ready for whatever may come to face them.

Equipped Items

Síonnách Geímhrídh | [T3 Polearm [One-Handed Assault Spear]; Perfect] Standing at nearly 120 cm in length from tip to tip, this short spear contains a metallic-appearing shaft of shifting dark and light violet, twirling in a mesmerising pattern. The blade - connected by a metal collar of a blackness similar to a void - glints with an ice blue colouring, a shift of light violet visible in the surface at the right angle. Twin wrapped lengths of cord - a combination of ice blue and dark violet - hang from the metal collar, intertwining in a mesmerising pattern when in movement.

Enhancement: Freeze [1 Slot] | Effect: Natural critical attack rolls of 9-10 (1 slot) or natural successful attack rolls of 8-10 (2 slots) remove the enemy’s action on their next turn as a Frost effect. Frozen opponents have their Evasion set to -1. Striking a frozen enemy before the effect ends deal an extra (16 * Tier) unmitigatable damage. [Must hit to activate the status condition.]
Enhancement: Paralyse [1 Slot] | Effect: Natural critical attack rolls of 9-10 (1 slot) or natural successful attack rolls of 8-10 (2 slots) remove the enemy’s action on their next turn. Paralyzed opponents lose any evasion properties.
Enhancement: Frostbite [1 Slot] | Effect: Natural critical attack rolls of 9-10 (1 slot) or natural successful attack rolls of 8-10 (2 slots) deal (10 * Tier) unmitigated Frost damage each enemy turn for 2 turns. In addition, anyone with Frostbite receives a -1 Accuracy debuff until the effect wears off.  Frostbite damage does not stack, but can be refreshed. The highest tier of Frost damage overrides lower tier versions; cannot be overridden by lower-tier versions. [Must hit to activate the status condition.]

Dark Fox's Reckoning [Tier 4; Heavy/Plate Armour] Forged to be shapely, this piece appears thinner than most pieces of heavy armour - leaving what appear to be openings towards the neckline, and the sides of the torso. Smaller shoulders leave limited protection towards the neck, but allow for greater movement. Coloured a dark violet, the edges of the piece outlined in a shifting soft silver, orange and red colour. Upon the chest's centre stands a white fox, slightly cured with fangs barred, black eyes staring out as if at the individual in front of the piece.

| Enhancement: Recovery [1 Slot] | Effect: Before your post action, make a separate CD roll. On a natural CD7+, regain (1 per slot * Tier) additional energy. This CD roll may also apply to activating the effects of Vamp-Def.
| Enhancement: Heavy Momentum [1 Slot] | Effect: After an unsuccessful attack, gain +(1 per slot * Tier) base damage until your next successful attack, at which point this bonus is removed. Another unsuccessful attack will reactivate this enhancement. Must be using the Heavy Armor Skill for this enhancement to take effect. [For Area of Effect attacks: This effect only activates if you miss all enemies targeted by the attack.]
| Enhancement: Taunt [1 Slot] | Effect: +1 Hate generated from Howl, Focused Howl, and successful attacks.

Dark Fox's Retribution [Tier 4; Celtic Shield] Similar to a wall shield, this piece stands nearly 137cm tall, and nearly 76 cm wide - easily covering the form of a shorter individual. Tapered on the sides, the shield seems to bend inwards slightly on its edges, a perfect opening for an outwardly weapon to be levelled through. The top and bottom edges slightly bend inwards, giving the impression of a less than straight appearance. Coloured in a dark violet, with edges of dark forest green, a white fox, slightly cured with fangs barred is emblazoned on its centre, appearing as if ready to strike.

| Enhancement: Recovery [1 Slot] | Effect: Before your post action, make a separate CD roll. On a natural CD7+, regain (1 per slot * Tier) additional energy. This CD roll may also apply to activating the effects of Vamp-Def.
| Enhancement: Thorns [2 Slots] | Effect: Successful non-critical attacks against you deal (9 * Tier) unmitigated damage to the attacking enemy. Only activates on damage dealing, melee attacks.

She hadn’t gotten far into the Badlands before she felt the rumbling in the ground beneath her. Carefully pacing her steps, she drew her shield in close, pulling her spear up into a ready position. Her eyes darting around, looking for any signs of creatures nearby – above, or below the sands.

Her caution was rewarded when two large worm creatures erupted from the sands just mere steps away from her. Nari glanced between the two of them, wondering just how much danger she was in. Their health bars weren’t enormous, nor did they appear to be anything other than standard floor spawns.

“If it turns out they’re too dangerous, I can just teleport away…” A small chitter from the fox on her shoulder made Nari realise she’d spoken aloud. She glanced around, seeing no further threats appearing, and decided that she could handle this – she was preparing for the front lines after all, wasn’t she?

Her first strike was far more devastating than Nari had ever suspected it could be, and for the briefest of moments she found herself staring at her new weapon – absolutely overwhelmed with joy at what it could do. She knew that she would have to find a way to repay NIGHT and the other woman for it, somehow.

‘Focus on the fight for now, if you survive you can find a way to pay them back in kind. For now, let’s put this to good use and end this as quickly as we possibly can.’ Nodding to herself, she readied herself for another strike – bringing her shield up in front of her, and levelling the spear along the left edge, waiting for the opening in the saltworm’s defence. It didn’t take long for the opening to appear, and as soon as it had, Nari slid forward, driving the tip of the spear towards the creature’s large, bulbous frame in an attempt to finish it with a single, second strike.

As the tip of her spear pierced the flesh of the first saltworm, Nari’s efforts were rewarded with a shower of sparks. The creature erupted into thousands of shards, which drifted down through the air before disappearing. Shifting her feet to face the second creatures, she smiled – mostly to herself – at her success. Although she had feared the weapon would be a downgrade from what she had been wielding before – especially the lack of bonus towards her accuracy – she was pleasantly surprised with its performance thus far.

Eyeing the second saltworm, Nari waited once more for an opening, holding her shield up and the spear levelled, the point directed towards the creature. It seemed to pause for a moment, as if unsure of its devotion to the fight now that its partner had been obliterated. ‘Come on, come get me you giant sand dick. Let me show you why you should feel fear…’

Nari felt the sands give out beneath her feet suddenly as the creature began its forward lunge. It took her far longer than she would’ve liked to realise that her opponent was feinting her – the strike coming from below, not ahead, as she had expected. Her armour took the brunt of the hit as the tail erupted from beneath her, throwing her a few metres away to land in the sand rather roughly.

Crawling to her feet, she cursed herself for letting her guard down, and while her health had taken almost no real damage – the health bar already returning to its full allotment thanks to her battle healing – she knew that such carelessness would be dangerous if this was something as strong as even a mid-level boss.

‘Get your head in the fight. Stop glorifying one good kill, as it means nothing if you’re not alive to celebrate it once the fight is over. Focus. Focus on the fight, it’s all that matters right now.’

She was ready for the strike from below this time, and as she felt the sands beneath her feet suddenly shift, she launched herself sideways – completely avoiding the upwards strike of the tail that had been buried beneath the sands. Giving out a small growl, she realised that she was in no position to strike out in retaliation, and found herself striding through the sands to rejoin the fight in earnest.

‘This thing is getting to be an annoyance. I need to finish it, now. Before it becomes an actual threat through simply tiring me out…’ Levelling her weapon and shield, she made her way into the creatures blindspot – or what she hoped was a blindspot, at least. She wasn’t sure if something without eyes could have something like that. Aiming for one of the larger portions of its tubulous form, she pushed the spear outwards, hoping to catch it off guard and possibly disable it for the time being.

This time her strike connected with the beast, and she watched as the entire form froze up – the tech skill locking it in place and providing her some relief, if only for the moment. Taking a breath, she stabilised herself on the sands before levelling her spear once more. She could feel the fight coming to its end, and as she readied herself, she wondered when these instances had gotten so easy.

Even with the slight frustrations of missed attacks, she felt no fear in combat now – it was almost too easy sometimes, and sometimes she found herself yearning for something more…challenging. A feeling she knew was dangerous – especially in this game. ‘And yet…isn’t the fear of death partly what makes this such a thrill – if one were to look at in such a way? Is that not what makes the fights more…real? More dangerous? More…euphoric?’

She felt herself shiver at the thought, realising how dangerous that line could be. It was one thing to fight to survive, but to fight for enjoyment…it was something one couldn’t afford in this death game.

The saltworm exploded, and Nari breathed a sigh of relief. The fight had lasted longer than she would’ve liked. She was starting to realise that as a tank, her ability to cause damage was truly hampered – she could certainly take a hit and barely notice it, but her ability to lash out wasn’t where she was strong. She pondered the concept as she continued her walk through the desert, her eyes naturally searching the sands for anything of interest – especially those materials she so loved to find.

“Definitely something to keep in mind, Yuki. I need to rely on others to slam out the damage – otherwise I’m going to have to lull my way through fights, and hope I can punch out enough over time to make a difference…” A thought suddenly occurred to her as she considered her combative limitations. “I do hope that I don’t face anything that has decent regenerative capacities…otherwise that’s going to be the definition of insanity right there…”

The thought of constantly trading blows – possibly for the rest of eternity if she was truly unlucky enough – made her giggle to herself. It was such a ludicrous idea, that she almost wished it would happen, just so she could say she did it. Eyes roaming the sands, she wondered what people would think if they just…sat and watched.

Her eyes immediately caught sight of the glow against the otherwise plain desert sands, and she wandered over to the area just off the beaten path. Making sure not to fall into any traps, she took some time digging out the metallic bars, finding a number of pieces of col as well. Content with the find, she returned to her walk along the dunes, still searching for anything of value to make an appearance.

She giggled to herself as she realised how different she was now. When she had first started this death game – after the announcement – she had barely been able to hold her place in combat. Now… ‘Now I’m soloing floors without a concern, facing monsters in groups that would’ve previously caused me to turn tail and run…’

Shaking her head, Nari forced herself to continue her forage. She was determined at this point to start finding materials of true worth – the demonic shards, that would be far more useful to her than anything else.

Yet another success, Nari deposited the new found items into her inventory. She was certainly having success finding the basic goods, but so far, her luck had struck out on the demonic shards. She figured she could continue her search as she made her way across the desert, her eyes casting across the sands as she went. Even if she wasn’t finding exactly what she wanted, she couldn’t deny that her searches were becoming profitable at this point.

“Hey…Yuki…Do you see that…?” Nari felt herself squint against the sands as she tried to make out the building in the distance. She couldn’t quite make it out from where she was, but it seemed like a building of some sorts rising against the otherwise rolling sands. Bringing up her map, she saw nothing noted – either she hadn’t been through this area yet, or she was seeing things. ‘Or…only one way to find out.’

The sands made her going slow, but she eventually found herself standing beneath a large wall that was clearly recently uncovered from the sands it had once been buried beneath. She could still see the piles of sand along the tops of the wall, and caught on outcroppings that stuck out along the various openings – openings that Nari thought might be windows.

Glancing about, she saw an entrance a little ways away from her current position, and made her way towards it. Something about the entire structure reminded her of the colosseum in old Rome, as if this were a miniature version of it – but she could see small differences in its design, as well. Her eyes continued to roam around it as she made her way along the outer wall, eventually passing through the large entrance and finding herself in what appeared to be an open arena. A small dialogue popped up, warning Nari that she would be unable to flee the area. Her finger hesitated over the accept button, wondering if she was making the right decision.

A sudden slamming sound behind her made Nari spin in place, pulling her shield and spear up into a readied position. As she turned, she found the entrance suddenly sealed, blocking off her retreat. Behind her another sound of explosion forced her to turn back, seeing what appeared to be a giant lizard explode from the ground. Realising that this must be the threat, Nari launched herself forward, hoping to make the first strike in what was likely to become a tough battle.

Her first strike caught the creature directly in the centre of its chest, the ice spreading across it as the freeze property activated. Nari smiled at her success, lavishing in such a capable first strike. Until she realised how little had been taken off the creature’s health bar. The sudden worry caught her as she side stepped around it, moving so as to leave its reach before it could break free of the ice and lash back at her in kind.

Bracing herself, she eyed up her opponent, realising that her wish for a more challenging conflict had been answered – and suddenly wondering if she was going to regret making such a wish. She felt the calmness wash over her as she considered her options, taking a few steps to her left in order to gain a better angle against the beast. She knew this was going to be a much more difficult fight than the saltworms, and a part of her was looking forward to it.

Putting the thought aside, she lunged forward, stabbing out with the spear even as she brought her shield up to block any counter attacks that may come her way.

Her second strike barely scratch the creature – and more so to Nari’s worry, she watched as some of the damage she’d originally done seemed to heal as the creature slammed its own attack into her. She barely felt it – her armour dulling the likely otherwise dangerous attack, but the fact that she would be fighting an uphill battle had her off put. Gritting her teeth, she pulled back a step, eyeing up her opponent and trying to figure out what she needed to do to truly hurt this thing. She knew that it’s ability to soften her blows wasn’t helping.

Spear tip pulled down towards the creature, she readied one of her newer strikes, wondering how well it would work against this creature. ‘If nothing else, we can see just how affective these tech skills truly are.’

She slid her right foot forward, before following through with her left side, placing her weight behind the strike as the blade tip turned light violet, leaving a light trail behind it in the air.

The shattering of the creature’s hides was like a blessing to Nari, and she felt the difference her strike made. More importantly – it not only missed its next strike towards her, but also didn’t recover any of its health. Nodding to herself, she figured that it could only regenerate on successful attacks – much like a tech skill she had wanted to hunt down, allowing her to do the exact same thing. ‘Right, just need to dodge its attacks then, and slowly whittle it down – should be…easy.’

As her own health bar returned to a full gauge, Nari’s calmness was broken by a mere second of enthusiasm, before being curbed and pushed downwards. Now was not the time for celebration – the fight was still going, and she needed all her focus on it in order to end this safely. Shifting to her right, she tried to keep the creature’s movements under her control, forcing it to follow and react to her, forcing it to watch out for her strikes. A single step forward and she shoved the tip of the spear towards the creature again, hoping to further damage its defences.

As her spear tip slide between the scales of the beast, Nari twisted, forcing more of the defensive armour plating to fall from the creature, and causing it to roar in pain and surprise. She could see the health bar drop again – her own ticking off the single point she received in return. Everything seemed to be going well now, and she knew she could truly push the advantage. But first…first she wanted to try weakening it just a little bit more.

Drawing the spear back towards herself, she pulled her shield up in front again, readying for the opening she knew was coming. As soon as the creature reared its head back, announcing its will to charge forward towards her, Nari stepped to her left, providing herself with a better striking angle towards the already chipped armour. Once again her spear tip shimmered with the soft violet glow as she ignited the sword art, pushing it directly towards the creatures already weakened torso.

‘So it can learn.’ Nari’s only thought as the creature slid to the side of her attack, spinning and slamming its own weapon into her side – Nari barely able to deflect it with her shield to minimize the strike. Nari forced herself to step back, to give herself space and time to consider her options. She knew that she wanted to bring the creatures defences down further, but she was worried that it had learnt her trick entirely and that she needed to consider other options. ‘One last try, let’s give it one last try – it could make a world of a difference…’

Nodding to herself, she decided there was nothing else for it, and began her sliding step towards the creature. At the last second she spun, forcing herself to the right in a wide arc, and bringing the tip of her spear around to slash across the front of the creature, hoping that her feint would provide her an opening in its otherwise strong reactions.

‘Well, that didn’t work at all. This…this thing is smarter than I expected…’ She stood her ground, forcing herself to reconsider the fight. It had clearly learnt to watch for her wild strikes, and so she decided that there was only one thing further she could do – stand her ground and slowly strike down the health on the creature over time.

Gritting her teeth and preparing for the long haul, she settled into her ready stance, bringing her shield before her and levelling her spear outwards. Letting the bottom of the spear settle softly on the ground, Nari bent her knees slightly, her eyes roaming over the creature and watching for any signs of it preparing to rush her. The tip of the spear followed its erratic movements, trying to maintain a bead on its chest. Just as she saw the sudden forward dash of the creature, Nari activated the waiting sword skill, letting the tip drive towards the giant creature.

Her blade slashed into the arm of the creature, leaving a dip in the creature’s health. Nari glanced at its health bar, noticing that it had dipped below the fifty percent marker. She was surprised at the progress she’d made – it had seemed like this fight was going to be much tougher than she had originally expected, however she was already halfway there. Smiling to herself, she side stepped another chaotic swipe of the creature, ducking beneath the backswing and placing some distance between herself and it.

Shield before her, spear held at the ready, eyes searching for another opening, Nari felt her calmness washing over her – the battle stoicism keeping her enthusiasm curbed and under control. She would have time to celebrate later, but for now her mind kept her focused on the important piece before her – making sure that she was aware of the danger she was in, and reacting to it accordingly. Another side step, and then she shoved the spear forward, trying to catch the creature beneath its armpit.

Nari saw the arm suddenly lash out backwards towards her – and attack that she wouldn’t have expected to be possible from something so large and cumbersome. She barely managed to duck backwards as it knocked her spear tip to the side, forcing her own attack to be as futile as its had been. Stepping to her right, she brought herself around again, trying to confuse it into opening its defenses for her.

She kept her shield up, poking the spear tip forward any time she saw a possible opening, drawing backwards the moment it engaged the feint, before striking at another target that opened up. She knew she had it one the defence – at least for the moment, as she harried it with false strikes in order to confuse and off set its ability to engage her successfully. As she feinted, she watched for the opening she would need, readying her thorns to unleash into the creature’s side the moment it provided her the opportunity to do so.

Nari watched as the health bar dropped further, her damage taking affect against the creature’s defenses. Just as Nari was thinking she may have finally found the true weakness of the being, when the creature suddenly doubled in size. She saw the scales once removed seal over, a film covering them as if adding another layer of defence.

The sudden change in the beast’s size caused Nari pause. She knew that often in stronger monsters they could change attack patterns, or even powers and capabilities midway through the battle. Nari had assumed that wouldn’t happen here, seeing as the health had hit the fifty percent marker with no change – but it had appeared that she was wrong.

Gritting her teeth, she knew that she would have to wear down the defences of the creature before she could truly have any hope of finishing it off. Slamming her spear tip towards the creature, she ignited the Shatter Tech skill, hoping to wear down the creature’s defences again and provide her a better chance of finishing it off.
