[F06 - PP] The Waterfall | <<Calming the Soul>>

Recommended Posts

She had been wandering the forest floor for hours now, cursing the woman who had sent her off on this foolish journey. All that Onóra had told her, was that there was some sort of waterfall that would mark the entrance, the beginning to the quest. Nari hadn’t been able to get any other details out of her – or her other sources, clearly forced into silence by Onóra, something that bothered Nari slightly. She’d been forced to take what little details the woman had deigned she’d need, and set off towards… whatever this was supposed to be.

Sighing for the uncounted time that morning, she pulled herself over yet another rise, her eyes taking in the forest and the numerous other expanses she likely still had to climb over to get to her destination. ‘When I get back, that woman is getting a piece of my mind…’

Smiling devilishly at the thought, she began to slide down the other side of the rise, continuing on her path. She wasn’t entirely sure if she was getting any closer to her actual destination, but at least the forest was peaceful in a sense.

‘If nothing else, it is a nice break away from everything…’ She wondered – not for the first time that morning – if that had been Onóra’s entire plan, to get her away from the busy side of life, to give her some time alone. She doubted it, but the possibility was still there, toying around in her mind. ‘I can ask her if I make it back, assuming I don’t spend the rest of my life here searching for a waterfall that may or may not exist…’

Síonnách Geímhrídh | [T3 Polearm [One-Handed Assault Spear]; Perfect] Standing at nearly 120 cm in length from tip to tip, this short spear contains a metallic-appearing shaft of shifting dark and light violet, twirling in a mesmerising pattern. The blade - connected by a metal collar of a blackness similar to a void - glints with an ice blue colouring, a shift of light violet visible in the surface at the right angle. Twin wrapped lengths of cord - a combination of ice blue and dark violet - hang from the metal collar, intertwining in a mesmerising pattern when in movement.

Enhancement: Freeze [1 Slot] | Effect: Natural critical attack rolls of 9-10 (1 slot) or natural successful attack rolls of 8-10 (2 slots) remove the enemy’s action on their next turn as a Frost effect. Frozen opponents have their Evasion set to -1. Striking a frozen enemy before the effect ends deal an extra (16 * Tier) unmitigatable damage. [Must hit to activate the status condition.]
Enhancement: Paralyse [1 Slot] | Effect: Natural critical attack rolls of 9-10 (1 slot) or natural successful attack rolls of 8-10 (2 slots) remove the enemy’s action on their next turn. Paralyzed opponents lose any evasion properties.
Enhancement: Frostbite [1 Slot] | Effect: Natural critical attack rolls of 9-10 (1 slot) or natural successful attack rolls of 8-10 (2 slots) deal (10 * Tier) unmitigated Frost damage each enemy turn for 2 turns. In addition, anyone with Frostbite receives a -1 Accuracy debuff until the effect wears off.  Frostbite damage does not stack, but can be refreshed. The highest tier of Frost damage overrides lower tier versions; cannot be overridden by lower-tier versions. [Must hit to activate the status condition.]

Dark Fox's Reckoning [Tier 4; Heavy/Plate Armour] Forged to be shapely, this piece appears thinner than most pieces of heavy armour - leaving what appear to be openings towards the neckline, and the sides of the torso. Smaller shoulders leave limited protection towards the neck, but allow for greater movement. Coloured a dark violet, the edges of the piece outlined in a shifting soft silver, orange and red colour. Upon the chest's centre stands a white fox, slightly cured with fangs barred, black eyes staring out as if at the individual in front of the piece.

| Enhancement: Recovery [1 Slot] | Effect: Before your post action, make a separate CD roll. On a natural CD7+, regain (1 per slot * Tier) additional energy. This CD roll may also apply to activating the effects of Vamp-Def.
| Enhancement: Heavy Momentum [1 Slot] | Effect: After an unsuccessful attack, gain +(1 per slot * Tier) base damage until your next successful attack, at which point this bonus is removed. Another unsuccessful attack will reactivate this enhancement. Must be using the Heavy Armor Skill for this enhancement to take effect. [For Area of Effect attacks: This effect only activates if you miss all enemies targeted by the attack.]
| Enhancement: Taunt [1 Slot] | Effect: +1 Hate generated from Howl, Focused Howl, and successful attacks.

Dark Fox's Retribution [Tier 4; Celtic Shield] Similar to a wall shield, this piece stands nearly 137cm tall, and nearly 76 cm wide - easily covering the form of a shorter individual. Tapered on the sides, the shield seems to bend inwards slightly on its edges, a perfect opening for an outwardly weapon to be levelled through. The top and bottom edges slightly bend inwards, giving the impression of a less than straight appearance. Coloured in a dark violet, with edges of dark forest green, a white fox, slightly cured with fangs barred is emblazoned on its centre, appearing as if ready to strike.

| Enhancement: Recovery [1 Slot] | Effect: Before your post action, make a separate CD roll. On a natural CD7+, regain (1 per slot * Tier) additional energy. This CD roll may also apply to activating the effects of Vamp-Def.
| Enhancement: Thorns [2 Slots] | Effect: Successful non-critical attacks against you deal (9 * Tier) unmitigated damage to the attacking enemy. Only activates on damage dealing, melee attacks.

The sound of water pulled Nari from her internal monologue of curses and promises. Rushing over the most recent hill, she found herself facing a waterfall – nearly three metres in height. She felt, as her eyes fell upon it, a sudden serenity. It was as if there was an aura over the entire area, calling her in.

She hesitated for a moment, a sudden chill down her spine making her wonder if entering the area was the best idea. Nothing immediately stood out to her as a danger… and yet something about the entire area had Nari on alert.

She paused on the hilltop for several minutes, surveying the area. She knew that if anyone was truly hiding, she likely wouldn’t spot them, but… something held her in place. Eventually she forced herself to move, to head down towards the waterfall. ‘If it is an ambush, the best way to find it is to spring it…’

Nothing jumped out to attack her as she made her way to the edge of the small body of water that the waterfall fed into. Nor did anything rush to assault her as she made her way around the edge towards the waterfall itself. Her eyes roamed the woods around for a time, before realising that she was, most likely, truly safe here.

Taking in the area, she noticed for the first time a rock – flat upon its top and showing signs of wear from time – situated before the waterfall. At first Nari had assumed that it had been worn away by the waterfall itself, but upon closer inspection she realised that the waterfall didn’t actually collide with the rock – missing it by enough that it was clearly not wearing upon it in any way.

“I think we need to go out there, Yuki.” Casting her gaze along either side, she realised there was only one way out. Sighing, she brought up her menu and removed her armour and shield, as well as the dress she normally wore. She paused upon the spear, hesitating for a good few breaths before storing it as well. She could feel her face flush, even though no one was around to see her. “I don’t like this…”

Fox curled around her shoulders, Nari made her way along the edge of the water, following a path that led behind the waterfall itself. As she approached the falling water, she could feel the spray against her exposed skin, and taking a deep breath she forced herself to quickly pass through the water – her eyes closing as it slammed into her shoulders. It was nowhere near as powerful as the waterfall she’d encountered on one of her first quests, but the water was cold against the otherwise warm air, bringing a chill to her.

The few pieces she still wore were thoroughly soaked, and Nari took a few moments to switch into more comfortable clothing – eventually settling into the rock in an outfit that Onóra had provided her; a simple set of leggings and a long sleeved shirt made of some sort of light fabric, both a soft violet in colour.

Standing on the rock, she glanced about to see if anything had changed. She wasn’t quite sure what to do now that she was out here, and she paused in place. “I guess… maybe sit for a while? If it’s anything like that other quest, I guess… look inwards…?”

Settling down into a seated position, folding her legs beneath her and placing her hands palm upwards on her thighs, Nari closed her eyes. Trying to clear her mind, she turned her focus inwards, attempting to push out the sound of the water falling beside her.

‘Why do you disturb my home, my place of rest?’ The sudden voice spooked Nari. She hadn’t truly expected anything to occur, much less a voice to reach out to her almost immediately after she had entered her meditative state.

Snapping her eyes open, she saw that her surroundings had changed. Gone was the waterfall and pool, the forest that she had been in. Instead, she found herself in a field – a lake in the distance to her left, and a forest surrounding the visible horizon on all other sides. She knew this place, far too well. Her heart tightened in her chest as she looked around, trying to figure out how she had arrived here. ‘I must be dreaming. This can’t be real…’

‘Who says dreams cannot be real? Aren’t they simply a piece of our mind, brought to the forefront of our understanding?’

She glanced around her, looking for the source of the voice, but coming up empty. The area was empty, aside from herself. ‘Not only am I imagining myself in places, but now I’m also imaging voices alongside it all… that’s just great.

‘Really, is that all you think I am? Just your imagination running wild?’ The voice still seemed to come from within herself, but Nari also seemed to sense a tone of hurt within it, as if it was insulted by the idea. Somehow it felt as if the voice came from another, as if it was someone else inside her mind. ‘Well, aren’t you an aware one. Mostly people assume in their conscience, or the voice in their mind reminding them of the good and bad they’ve done…’

‘But you’re not, are you?’ Nari had an extensive history with her own conscience, and this somehow felt different. ‘You’re something entirely different.’

The only thing to answer her question was an echoing laugh. It sounded to Nari as if it bounced around the inside of a large cavern, and yet she knew it came only from within her own mind. Closing her eyes once more, she called out with her mind. ‘Show me what you will, then.’

Opening her eyes again, Nari found herself seated within the same field, the forests in the distance and the lake still off to her left. Only one thing had changed, a shadow form – humanoid, but lacking anything other than a set of eyes, and a smile in the shape of a smirk. Nari’s gaze locked on the white spaces that represented eyes on the shadow form, coming to rest as she faced it. Moments of silence passed between them as Nari simply stared, waiting.

‘What is it that is expected of me.’ The shadow form waved a hand, and beside it a door appeared. Pitch black, and outlined in white, it seemed to call to Nari, as if it wanted her to pass through it. She could see a handle etched into the door, barely visible as black on black. She glanced between it and the shadow form, hesitating. ‘What, is this? Where does it go? What will I find?’

The figure gave no response, simply holding its hand up in gesture to the door. Nari could feel the urge to pass through pulling at her, and yet…something about it felt wrong. As if she should resist, as if she should try and get away. A single step forward, then another, and suddenly her body was moving entirely of her own will – bringing her through the doorway and into an area that seemed all too familiar.

She felt her heart tighten, then suddenly start thumping in her chest. A chill up her spine, then another, and another. She could feel her hands begin to shake, her entire body locked while her mind screamed at her to run. She had been here, so long ago. And yet, she remembered every detail. The smell of the air, wafting in from the kitchen as some sort of pasta dish was being baked. The sounds of the clock in the hallway, the screams in the distance. The colours of the walls – bright yellows, mixed with soft oranges, clashing with the green laminate floor.

Her eyes drifted to her hands, watching as they closed the door behind her – closing off the street beyond. Against her will, her feet carried her forward, six steps and into the living room. The couch, pale green mixed with a collage of yellow flowers, stood right where she had seen it last – across from the television that displayed the family night’s typical – some game show where players faced off in a test of knowledge. She wanted to run, her mind screamed at her to run. To leave before…

Her eyes slid across the living room to the floor beside the couch, close to the archway that led into the dining room. Slumped on the ground, she found what she feared. A smaller, tanned skinned girl – long, dark hair falling over the face, covering the features that Nari knew so well, and yet could barely picture anymore.

She felt the tears begin to fall, and as she knew they would, her feet began to carry her closer, to find what she knew would await her. The body shuddered, as it always did, breathing heavily, even with the knife stuck into the side of the ribcage. Nari knew – now, so long afterwards – that the knife hadn’t pierced anything vital. But as it always did, her mind refused to acknowledge this fact. She felt, more than heard, herself scream. She felt the disturbance in the air, as a body came around the corner, the man it belonged to beginning to scream at her.

No longer in control – the one key factor that remained constant, on that day and every day after it that she relived this moment – she watched as her own hand pulled out the blade, turning and standing in one smooth motion to face the man who had called himself ‘father’, to Evelyn. Almost as if controlled by someone else, she had crossed the room, watching from within herself as she plunged the knife into his chest, drawing it back and repeating the motion, over and over again.

She wanted to scream, wanted to close her eyes, to make the memory stop. But she knew it wasn’t done yet, that there was more to come. And almost as if summoned, Evelyn’s mother turned the corner, the scream echoing Nari’s own.

As she had that day, Nari felt herself stand suddenly, her voice screaming out above the ear-splitting scream that Evelyn’s mother had let loose upon seeing what she had done. What Nari had done, in their house. Nari felt herself shake inside, her mind fighting against watching this, trying to escape the nightmare that had kept her awake for so long, and continued to haunt her even to this day.

“You. You let this happen. You caused this, brought this down upon her. It’s your fault. You are to blame!” Her hand raised, ready to bring the knife down on her, Nari screaming in her own mind to stop, to leave. But it was another voice that stopped her – a voice she knew from her memories. Barely a coughing whisper, and yet Nari’s head snapped around at it. “Evelyn?”

The horror in her voice was apparent even to Nari, this long after it had occurred. The realization at what she had done. The shame, at what couldn’t be undone. Her body rushed over towards Evelyn – but came to a sudden stop as the girl rose, slowly climbing to her feet. Nari’s horror gave way almost immediately to confusion, knowing that this hadn’t occurred – not even in her worst nightmares. The girl’s face remained covered, hidden from view, but the voice broke through without any hinderance.

“Do you remember why? Why you did this?” Nari’s mouth opened, then closed. She was still trying to figure out what was going on – it had all been exact, until now. This was…different. This was something else, something she wasn’t sure about. Something that caused her pause. “Did you do it because you loved me? Or did you do it because, deep down, you hated him. Did you do it because deep down, you wanted to let out your anger, your frustration, your daemon.

The words cut through Nari, and she felt herself take a step backwards, her hands coming up reflexively, held outwards away from herself. Her eyes cast across them, realizing that she was holding her spear, the shield on her right forearm. Glancing down, she saw the armour she wore in Sword Art Online on her body, the violet colouring standing out against the yellows and oranges of the room. ‘What…what is going on…?’

Her gaze was pulled from herself as she looked up and saw Evelyn’s face lift, the soft features of the girl gone – replaced by something grotesque in comparison. Red eyes stared out at her, a peeled away mouth, as if rotten and torn, smiled at her. Pieces – coloured as if seen through a kaleidoscope – were missing from her cheeks and forehead. Her hands, once so soft and comforting, had been replaced by claws.

“Did you ever love me? Or was I just a prize, to be sought after and collected?”

The creature – Nari couldn’t call it anything but, it clearly wasn’t Evelyn. Not anymore – came rushing towards her, claws flashing through the air as it tried to tear into her. She slid sideways, pushing out with the tip of the spear in muscle memory, but her attack lacked any enthusiasm as her mind tried to figure out what was going on – the tears streaming from her eyes. She couldn’t understand what had happened to Evelyn – what had happened here. None of this was occurring as it always did, nothing was the same. Nothing was right.

“Why are you doing this?! Why?!” Her voice was choked by the tears, the words coming out garbled as she tried to breath and hold back her sorrows. All the while her feet moved, keeping her away from the creature as she tried to hold it back.

“Why? This is what you deserve. You know it. You deserve this!” It screamed – the sound almost animalistic as it suddenly charged her, rushing in to try and overwhelm her defenses and tear her apart. Nari could see the bloodlust in its eyes, and she realised – this wasn’t her Evelyn. Not anymore. This was some creature, wearing her appearance, and wanting her dead.

Fighting past the tears, she forced herself into her standard stance, bringing the shield up and levelling the spear in preparation to receive the blunt of the creature’s assault. She would defeat it, here and now. ‘And then, maybe, she can rest in peace.’

Even recognising the change that had overcome Evelyn, something in Nari pulled her attack at the last second, forcing herself to shift the spear and miss impaling her once love. Her shield still in place, she shifted it slightly as the thing came towards her, forcing it to roll off to her right and away from her, spinning herself around to face it again and putting distance between them. It screamed at her, fury crossing its face – like nothing Nari had ever before seen on Evelyn’s own face. She felt herself shudder, not recognising the thing before her at all anymore.

“I don’t know what you are, but you’re not her. And I won’t let you wear her like some sort of…cloth.” The thing seemed to smile, as if bolstered by her words. Breathing deeply, she forced the anger out of her, letting go of it all. Steadying herself, she brought the shield inwards, levelling the spear once more along its top edge. ‘Evelyn. I’m sorry. For everything. I love you.’

The tears rolled down her face as the spear, steady and level, shook with the impact. A brief moment as Nari closed her eyes, refusing to look, before she felt the spear suddenly spring slightly, as if the weight had left it. She cautiously opened her eyes, waiting to find the creature in her face, claws descending upon her in an act of unbridled fury and rage. Instead, she found herself standing in the living room, facing another doorway. Glancing around, she found herself alone now – Evelyn, her mother and father, gone.

The door slowly opened, providing Nari a glimpse into a black void. She wasn’t sure what would lay beyond it, but she assumed anything would be better than what she had just witnessed. Without another thought, she rushed through the door, stepping into the darkness and turning to see it close behind her, disappearing into the void as it did so. Blinking, she turned to find herself standing on a floor she hadn’t visited in some time – the rolling hills outside of the Town of Beginnings greeting her, the sun beating down from above.

Surprise taking over her, she glanced around, trying to figure out how she had arrived here. She couldn’t figure out why the door would have brought her here, of all places, until she heard a voice that had haunted her, in her dreams and mere moments ago.

“Hey! Nari! Are you ready? I hear this one is a bit of a challenge!” The words were familiar, and it took Nari but a moment to recognise when they had been spoken. Her heart dropped, and she felt herself begin to breath quickly as she slowly turned to find Evelyn standing beside her – the turquoise leather armour standing out against the green backdrop. In her right hand was the single handed battle axe she had favoured, her left covered by the small buckler that had the winter fox painted on it.

“Hey, Eve. Are you sure we’re ready for this? Some of the others were saying it’s pretty tough…” The words were out of her mouth before she had even realised she was speaking. Evelyn’s tinkling laughter hit her ears, and Nari felt herself fighting between smiling, and crying. The painful bliss of hearing it again, even knowing what was coming, was almost too much for her.

“I think we can handle a little danger, don’t you?” The smile seemed to ease her worries, if only slightly – and if only on the outside. Internally, Nari was screaming as she watched the scene unfold. She knew what was going to occur, and yet there was nothing she could do but sit and watch, as if a viewer in a horror film.

The two made their way back into town, collecting the two others who had wanted to join them on the day. Nari could remember their names, almost perfectly. Jaxily, the man from Japan whom had barely spoken to them the first time they’d met – overcome with anxiety. He had always favoured the support role, staying behind and slipping in with his dagger whenever it seemed safe to do so. Qyranki had been the other, a man who was all smiles and friendliness – but who wielded his two handed battle axe with what could only be accounted to fearfulness. He had always been timid in the fight, relying on others to stand before him and take the blunt of the hits.

The party had made their way up to the eighth floor, following some rumours that others had given them, hoping to score big with the drops on the floor. It hadn’t taken long for them to realise they were out of their depth, and as they were just arguing about turning around – the creature had struck. Some mid-levelled boss, for an event on the floor, had appeared. Nari had taken a single look at the giant, bearlike creature before stumbling over her feet in order to escape.

She forced her eyes closed as the creature brought its claws downwards, knowing exactly what would happen next. She heard the scream, felt the rush of wind as Evelyn leapt before her, the claws raking through her back and tearing her apart. The explosion as the shards scattered – but the explosive sound never came.

Instead, a voice spoke out, full of hatred. “Is that what you do, hide? Hide away from the problems of the past, hoping that they leave you alone? Hoping that somehow, somehow they eventually fade away and leave you alone? That you somehow work passed it, through ignorance and pretend? Was that all I was to you, something to be left behind in a memory?”

Opening her eyes, she saw the same, disfigured being from the first scene, a slithering tongue flickering in and out as it spoke, the claws raised and ready to strike. Her own shield and spear had reappeared, and Nari felt herself step backwards as she prepared herself once again.

“I’m sorry…I’m so sorry…Evelyn…” Her tears ran uncontrolled down her face as the spear imbedded itself into Evelyn’s torso, the thorns hidden within it erupting and piercing through her body. Somehow, against all that Nari believed possible, the form of Evelyn remained on the end of the spear. The sudden laughter from Evelyn’s mouth was more than Nari could handle, and she pulled the spear free, forcing herself backwards a few steps, trying to keep her distance as the woman-daemon strode towards her.

“You’re sorry. As if I wanted to hear that. You left me, to die. On that day, and forever afterwards. I was nothing to you, wasn’t I? Nothing, but a fragment to be forgotten, left behind, tossed aside!” That scream again as it launched itself towards Nari, forcing her to side step and flow beneath the assault, trying her hardest just to stay out of reach.

“No! I never forgot! I never tossed you aside! I…I’m sorry! I should’ve been there, should’ve done my duty that day! I have never forgiven myself…for letting you down. For letting everyone down!” Her voice broke as she screamed the words back, causing the creature to halt in place for a brief moment. Nari saw the opportunity, and took it – no hesitation in her movements as she closed the distance, bringing her spear up to strike.

The claws raked against her torso as her shield dropped slightly, causing her health bar to dip a single point – and in return causing the thorns hidden within her shield to flare out, piercing the creature atop her in dozens of places. Nari watched the expression of fury and hatred shift – to one of pain, sorrow and what she would swear was an expression filled with regret. Her mouth moved, even as Evelyn’s form shattered, bursting into thousands of shards and disappearing from sight. “I’m sorry, for everything I did. But I never forgot you, and never will…”

A blink, and suddenly the door was there again – the black void surrounded by a white outline. As Nari approached it, wondering where it would lead her this time, it swung open – revealing the void beyond once more. Taking a deep breath, she stepped through the portal, closing her eyes as she did so, only opening them again when she knew that she had passed the portal entirely.

This time she found herself in a location more recent, more familiar to her. The restaurant seats were empty, but Nari knew it would only be a matter of time…and just as the thought passed through her, the bell – signalling the front door had been opened – rang out against the quiet. Slowly, as if resisting the movement, she turned to find herself facing yet another familiar face – this time, not Evelyn. This time, it was someone else she had hurt, someone else she had betrayed. Her eyes dropped to the floor as she spoke, the words catching in her throat. “Hello, NIGHT.”

“Hello, NIGHT.” The words were hollow. Her heart at tightened to the point where Nari could almost feel the pain in her chest. She knew this wouldn’t be a welcoming reunion. Not after what she had done, not here.

“Hello, Nari.” The voice chilled her. It carried NIGHT’s tone, but the words weren’t hers at all. For a collection of moments, Nari just stared silently, wondering what would occur with this meeting. She knew, within her heart, the harm that she had caused, but she had thought that she had overcome the guilt of it recently.

“Overcome? No, you’ve ignored it. Haven’t you? Put it to the side, cast it somewhere where you can’t see it, where it can’t harm you. You haven’t amended what you’ve done. You’ve only pretended to, to make yourself feel better.”

“That’s…not true. I…I’ve tried to repair…” Her voice faltered as she realised the lie, she was about to speak. Had she really tried to make amends, to repair the damage she’d done? She’d said as much in kind words, words that at the time had felt hollow – as if a child giving an apology but not understanding the emotion that should be behind it. She felt herself shudder, struggling to hold back the depression and sorrow that had begun to fill her. “I’ve…I’ve been trying…to fix things…it just…it…”

“If you were truly trying to fix things, would you have simply said some nice words and moved on? No, you’d have tried to recreate the connection, to make true amends. Not pretend it never happened. Not ignore what you did. You don’t care about making it better, you only care about making yourself feel like you did good – like you kept the promises you made.” The voice held nothing back, its words filled with venom as it spoke the words that had lain deep within Nari’s heart ever since the tournament. She felt herself stepping backwards, ramming into the booth as she tried to escape the words, tried to escape the entire situation. “That’s what you always do, isn’t it? Pretend to be sorry, pretend to do the right thing. But really, what do you do but run and hide? Disappear away from everything, and everyone. You don’t want to do anything but hide, hide away from those you hurt – from those who hurt you. That’s all you’ve ever done, isn’t it?”

“That’s not true! It’s…it’s not true…I don’t…” Another falter, another set of lies. She did always run away, didn’t she? Like she did after Evelyn’s death. Like she did after her attack of NIGHT. She hid, away from the world, preferring to be alone. It’s who she was at her core, wasn’t it?

“It’s who you’ve always been. You hurt those who care about you, and then disappear. You don’t make amends, you don’t fix things. You just cause pain. It’s all you’ve ever done.” The words drilled into her, seeming to echo in her mind. Her escape attempt stopped as her entire body went limp, surrendering to the truth. She always ran away, to hide.

“I…” There was no response she could give, no counter argument. Nothing she said against it would be true, honest. “I don’t want to hurt people…”

The creature wearing NIGHT laughed, a vile sound coming from the girl’s mouth. Filled with hatred, filled with venom. It tore into Nari more than the words, ripping what little assurance she had apart. She felt herself collapse to her knees, the tears blurring her vision as the being strode forward to stand over top of her.

“You don’t want to hurt people. What a joke. You attacked me. You tried to kill me. You want nothing more than to hurt people. It’s all you do. All you ever do.” It laughed again, and Nari felt everything sudden wash away. There was no sorrow, no anger, no depression. All that was left was a void, a hole where her emotions had once been. She felt herself dragged downwards into the void, pulling her further and further into the darkness. “That’s all you’re truly about, isn’t it? You pretend to get close to people, to make them like you – and then you tear them apart, let them suffer, let them die. Like Evelyn. Like me. Like her.”

Something changed, with the final word. The way it was spoken, the way it pulled in Nari’s mind. The darkness seemed to pause in its advance, as Nari looked up at the form above her. Gone was the typical appearance of NIGHT, the girl replaced by something corrupted in nature.

“No…no you’re wrong. You’re wrong. I’ve…I’ve made mistakes…I’ve done things…but…” Her voice was a bare whisper as she tried to fight against the depression, tried to push back against the void that was fighting to consume her. She knew…knew that there was truth in the words, and yet… “I have hurt those I love…those I cared for…but I won’t…I’ll make my amends. I’ll make things right. I have to…for her.”

Struggling to stand, Nari found her spear in her hand, the shield on her right arm having reappeared. The tears still blurred her vision, but she could see enough to notice the creature seem to back off a single step. “I will not succumb to you…I have to make things right…if only for her…”

The creature gave a hiss as Nari managed to bring herself to her feet, struggling just to remain standing – but determined to face this creature. She wasn’t done yet, she still had to fix things. And to do that, she needed to make things right within her self first. “I have to make peace with myself, before I can make peace with others. I know that…but I won’t let you be the bane of me.”

She pulled her right foot backwards, settling into her guard stance as she waited for the creature to make the first move. She knew that this was the tipping point, that if she faltered and fell here, that there would be no chance of recovering – that her will, her very essence, would be lost. But she wasn’t done yet, she wouldn’t give up yet. She would fight, until there was no fight left to give. She owed her that much. Setting herself, she forced the emotions within herself down – forcing the battle calmness to come forth, to take over and allow her to focus on the conflict that she now faced. She knew this would be the hardest fight she had faced yet, but she was willing to stand and face it now.

“I have hurt you, more than you deserved. But I will make things right, if it’s the very last thing I do in this life. I will correct the pain I’ve caused, I will heal the rift I’ve created. Because it’s not you, who should suffer – I don’t want to see you suffer…even if it’s not reciprocated, I love you too much for that.”

The creature screamed at Nari, suddenly raising it’s claws and rushing towards her. Nari was ready for the attack – she had known this moment would come, and for a while she had considered simply giving up, allowing it. But she wasn’t ready to surrender. Not yet. Not when she still had promises to keep, forgiveness to seek. She knew that it would be easier to simply lay down, to give up. But there were others who relied on her, others who cared for her…and she would not let them down – no matter what.

“Come, then. I am ready to forgive myself, truly. To start anew, to find the balance I seek. I’ve carried this pain for too long…” Raising her shield up in front of herself, she brought her spear level, waiting as the creature seemed to hesitate, then rush forwards again. She eyed its movements, watching for the sign that it would provide her the opening she required. A single, deep breath, was all she had to give as the conflict began afresh. ‘I have made my peace with Death, but I shall not meet them today…not yet.’

The creature rushed her, coming straight at Nari without any change in course. It was almost too easy, as she held her spear outwards, impaling the creature in the chest as it flailed about with its claws, trying desperately to reach her. Nari watched as it slowly slid closer and closer, forcing the spear deeper through her body in a ravenous, frantic attempt to close the distance. Shocked and appalled by the behaviour, she forced the spear to the side, through the creature from it and turning herself to face it again.

“I don’t know what you are, but you are not NIGHT. And I will defeat you, no matter what it costs. I will forgive myself, and in turn gain her forgiveness. I must…” She let the words fall off, knowing that there was nothing further to say. The only thing left was action, to prove that she was ready to take the next steps forward. It was time to truly put the despair aside, and to focus on the future ahead.

She held her ground, watching as the thing paced back and forth, eyeing her up. It tried a few feints, falling back before Nari could retaliate in kind. She wasn’t enjoying this stand off, the longer it went on, the more she felt the dread returning. She knew – in her heart – the only way to truly forgive herself was to end this, to do what she had tried to do in the tournament. The sudden memory of it reached her – buried deep within for so long, and she felt her guard drop for the briefest of moments.

“I…remember. What I did. I tried to defeat you then – not you, but what you represented. I…never should have done that. And I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to kill you, but the anger, the hatred, within me – it took the shape of you, as it does now.” She raised her guard again, causing the creature to stop its sudden advance – likely trying to take advantage of the opening it had seen. “I was wrong, to do such a thing. I broke my promise, once. I won’t do it again. Make peace with Death, for it shall judge you unkindly, but fairly.”

Nari’s eyes closed as the daemon exploded into shards, leaving her alone once again. She felt the beating of her heart calm, as if a pressure was released from it. She wondered, for a brief moment, if she would be free of the pain and suffering she had put herself through, held on to, since the encounter in the tournament.

Opening her eyes, she saw the door before her again, the black void calling out to her. She knew this was far from over, and yet – a small piece of her hoped that she was done with this, that the door would somehow lead her back to the small pond beneath the waterfall. She felt a tiredness within her – an exhaustion of her very soul…

Straightening her shoulders and pushing down the exhaustion, the doubts, the worries, Nari forced herself forward. Wiping the tears from her face, she stepped through the portal, closing her eyes in preparation to face whatever horrors laid on the other side. ‘I’ve come this far, I won’t give up now…’
