[F09 - PP] Hounds Afire | <<Gatekeeper of Fire>>

Recommended Posts

“I’m bored. We should go do something.” Nari rolled over on the couch, nearly tipping off the edge as she turned to face NIGHT, staring at the other with what she hoped was a pleading, demanding looking. They’d spent the morning relaxing, enjoying the company of one another. But Nari had begun to grow restless, wanting to get up and move, not simply lay about the couch.

“Hey…want to help me get some more tech skills? I know there’s two I’m missing.” She quickly brought up her menu, swiping through the options until her eyes fell upon the two outstanding quests. She read over both of them quickly, before turning her attention back to her companion. “Fire dogs, or vampires?”

She spun the menu around so that NIGHT could see the two listed quests, bringing up the submenus for each just in case she wanted to read them in more detail. She figured the girl likely already had completed them, but it was the best she had to offer in order to spice up their day a bit.

“Personally, I think meeting up with Cerbi again would be interesting…if for no other reason than I want to be able to try and pet the doggie. But the restorative skill that Lilith provides is intriguing…what’re your thoughts on it?” She rolled again on the couch, flipping over onto her back and looking up at NIGHT from below, tilting her head back as she did so to get a better look. She waited patiently for a response, her feet tapping against the couch, and a melody that had been stuck in her head escaping from behind tightly closed lips in a soft humming sound.

“I’m bored. We should go do something.”

"oh, we've gotten to that part of the relationship already?"

night's eyes were better glued to the menus she'd been sifting through. messages from bistro were never-ending, and here she was being asked to consider the idea of a consumables hub for an expansion to her store. if only the alchemist could keep a steady pace in fulfilling orders and maintaining information streams both on top of whatever underhanded schemes she had on monetizing others' businesses. at least, when she pulled away from the interface, it was to look at someone else's, and the player behind it was a beauty to behold.

not that night would ever confess to it.

"sure." her own windows closed with a wave. the player quickly read the second before the first. vampires she'd seen once. same went for cerberus. but at nari's explanation for which she'd prefer, the woman decided she'd already made up her mind. though, from behind the menus, night glanced to her other with a raised brow. "you call him cerbi? a little close you're being to the hound of the underworld, don't you think?"

she paired it with a smile, leaning back against the arm rest. "sure. let's go with the dog, then. at least your armor would offset that heat hell." the woman tilted her head, an almost lazy direction. "but you off the couch before i."

She tilted her head to the left at the joke, debating on whether she should respond to it or not. It was somewhat out of character for NIGHT – or perhaps she was just starting to get more comfortable. Either way, Nari wasn’t about to complain about it – it had been amusing. Stifling a giggle in response, she instead decided to comment on the second question, her ears reddening slightly on the tips.

“Yeah, Cerbi. Short for…well, you know what it’s short for. And it’s not closeness. It’s just…a cuter name.” She glanced up at NIGHT from below, sticking the tip of her tongue out in response. Rolling sideways and off the couch, she sprung to her feet, offering a hand to the other. “Alright, I’m up. Now as tempting as that previous offer is, let’s go pick on an underworld dog. If nothing else, the heat of the floor might make us need to tone down the clothing a bit.”

A glittering smile and a wink from her signifying the underlying meaning – as if NIGHT wouldn’t catch it almost immediately. Still, she felt that the added actions only complimented it. As soon as NIGHT was off the couch, Nari gave a little spin, before pulling on her vest and making her way towards the front door.

“Come on, little walk through the cold, then we hit prime bikini weather. Or…well, I guess prime bikini heat. I doubt the weather is actually indicative of wearing a bikini…may melt some skin doing that on floor nine….”

well, between cerbi and nari both, the latter obviously won out at the metric of a cuter name. and night stood by that decision, watching the player stick her tongue out. she'd nearly reached out to press the flat of her thumb and index between puffed cheeks, before her tank shifted, ready for the duty. "it's more likely he's picking on the locals than otherwise. but okay."

"If nothing else, the heat of the floor might make us need to tone down the clothing a bit.”

"who, on you?"

and the look she shot nari was one of incredulity. the better armor to have worn for the occasion was something that protected both of them for the heat -- stats considering, and comfortability otherwise. their fingers locked as night stood from the couch. when the player considered the wink, then audibly sucked at the insides of her mouth.

rude.

"you're the one who's brave enough to show off in public," she commented, fingers sifting through her equipment. menus she didn't mind looking through -- a tidy collection of peripheries. the woman lumbered after nari, jacket flashing upon tracksuit, a look feigning disinterest despite the glances shot her other's way. "if you're so keen on it, i'm sure i wouldn't mind."

night was first out the house, door held open by its homeowner. and she kept pace at nari's side, the cold biting at the warmth that had started to seep into her system, keeping company the flush that stirred at the thought of bare skin. "better safe than sorry. i don't subscribe to the idea that less is more when it comes to armor, and from what i remember, you don't either, unless you're in the business of proving me wrong."

She was still considering her response when the two made their way onto the teleporter pad, her normally witty retorts held back by the sudden forwardness of NIGHT. She wasn’t quite sure what to make of it, other than the fact the she was clearly settling in well. Cocking her head as she glanced at the girl, she called out to activate the teleporter. “Floor Nine, Yōgan Village.”

A slight shimmer – Nari shutting her eyes tight against the bright light – and then they were stepping off onto the overwhelming heat. At her side, Yuki gave a hiss of distaste – both at the heat, and at having to walk, Nari’s shoulders currently unavailable for her familiar.

“I hate this floor.” She hissed in response to Yuki’s own voiceless distaste. Shrugging away the discomfort as best as she could in her armour, she pulled NIGHT down from the teleporter, half dragging the girl through the main settlement and out into the wildlands beyond. “The sooner we’re done here, the better. Then I can get back home where it’s nice and cozy, and not a bloody level of hell.”

She continued mumbling curses as she dragged NIGHT beside her to the area she had first found Cerberus – a small cave just below the mountain – if it could even be called that – which Knorilt Village could be found. It hadn’t taken long to traverse the distance – far less than her original meandering wander had taken her – and as she spotted the switchback that led down towards the cave, she slowed herself, turning to glance at her companion.

“Ready for this? I hear there’s some specific requirements for this quest…so don’t kill it too quickly, alright?”

in her mind, she'd only pictured the thought of facing cerberus alone. and her mind hadn't taken her to noticing the rest of the terrain the floor was offering -- to that, at the sound of nari announcing their destination, even night found herself souring at the name. once the light had faded from view, she could only concur with the party's displeasure. "don't have to tell me twice." and she matched pace with her other, despite their speed feeling forced. "as much as i'd like to agree," she replied, "floor four and nine are both on the extreme ends. they're both hells in their own way."

though, night rolled her eyes, humming a realization to herself while leaning into her partner. "at least where i'm going, you're in it."

the walk to cerberus' lair was short; no side trips, because what else was there to do at a volcanic terrain? and all the same -- wait, don't kill it too quickly?

"what."

the player huffed, switching gears for a moment, the pull away from nari and hesitation in her steps for night to settle her equipment once again. "well i didn't hear anything about this. but if it's patience cardinal wants..."

and the system was lucky night was the type of player to stash away items that she believed should've had no reason to be kept around. cleats where her running shoes once were at, in bright white rather than black. night groaned at their effectiveness, before pulling her blade to her shoulders. less potent at killing. more precise.

she offered a hand to nari, reluctantly taking in that ashen air. "whenever you're ready."

She watched as NIGHT shifted her gear around, taking in the white cleats, the blade behind her back. She cocked her head, eyeing up the new outfit. Or, part of a new outfit, rather. She wasn’t quite sure it could be deemed as an entire outfit change, but a change nonetheless. Smiling at the offered hand, Nari clasped onto the forefingers, giving a slight tug into the tunnel that led towards the lair that Cerberus was usually hidden away in.

She hummed a tune that she had listened to many years ago, one that had stuck with her. As she walked, she felt the song slip between her lips – a clear indication she had spent too much time lately in her recording studio.

“Sha ta co ti oh scum ne rivna… Sha ta co ti oh nugga tir na nog…” The whispered words carried to a tune she had been so familiar with once, but which was taking her entire focus to remember now. Not to be beaten by a song, she furrowed her brows, thinking on the next line as she walked. Giving a little squeak of joy once she’d remembered, she blurted out the words to the air. “Sha ta co ti oh scum ne rivna, Nug a tir na nog!”

Her attention returned to the tunnel around them, she suddenly caught the sound of growling, coming from directly before them. The same river of molten rock lit up the cave, and as the three hounds wandered into sight, their teeth on display to the two girls before them.

“Come, my love our world’s would part,” She spoke the next line as she pulled her shield up, stepping in front of NIGHT in a protective manner. “The gods will guide us across the dark.”

Sliding her left foot forward, she let her spear rush across the distance towards the closest of the hounds, aiming for the point just below its chin. “Morríghan treoir mo sleá, agus stailc síos iad siúd romham.”

she supposed it was apt that between the two, the better player suited for volume was her other. and night followed along without complaint, footsteps light against the cavernous floor. with this time, voice utterance in song, even against the backdrop of the lava-burbling subterrain did it sound satisfactory to the quiet woman, even if it was a little strange to hear high notes in a dreary realm. night found herself smiling nonetheless, a pull of her lips obscured by shadows of the changing, shifting light.

her silence paid off, it seemed, when the snarls of cerberus' minions alerted the party of their presence. and nari moved to the front, preparing for combat. half amused and enchanted still, night could only pull her blade to the side, watching her partner shift ahead, curiously. back faced towards her and the heat's amber lighting meant a hidden fidgeting to her ears, the moment she could make out what her companion was saying. "is that part of the song, too?"

not wanting a reply, the woman ducked forth from behind her protector, hoping to round the canines with a series of strikes from behind. one moved quicker than the others, seemingly having moved out of the way from nari's attack, readying a preemptive strike to the shadow lunging forth. the explosive force of its bite was the bigger concern as opposed to its teeth, its knockback throwing night off-balance, the player stumbling back to a readied position as she found space behind her to relax within.

Her first strike had been about as effective as most…which was to say, not very at all. She barely registered as NIGHT shifted around and over her, slashing across the three hounds in an arc before falling back – managing to avoid most of the counter attacks that the hounds attempted. Still, a single landed upon her, and Nari felt a sudden shift in herself, moving in response towards the hounds.

Bringing her spear up, she let her shield falter slightly as she began her slid towards the right side. A sudden shift in her weight drawing the eyes of the wolves. Letting her left foot spin around behind her, continuing in an arc. The spear, levelled in the air against her, flashed a violet shimmer as it followed the movement of her foot, causing the tip to slash outwards towards all three wolves.

“Morríghan treoir mo sleá, agus stailc síos iad siúd romham.” The prayer escaped her lips again as she spun, the voice void of emotion and yet uttering an essence of danger to those whom it was aimed towards. Her eyes captured little as she moved, the blur of the creatures and her weapon registering only once her movement had completed. Pulling her shield up, she readied herself for the counter she knew would be coming shortly.

and three miniature hell hounds a cerberus would not make. with the dogs stunned in place, they were easy targets for night to have picked off -- not that she needed the boost in precision, from the look of it. a swing downwards as she jumped to the first hound, her figure was consumed in auxiliary fragments as she dashed towards the second, the pierce of her sword through its form returning it to cardinal. for the last, she delivered a back-handed swing, her front towards the back of the cave as a guttural howl from further within beckoned the players, just as the last minion was slain.

so much for sending scouts. as night took her time to recover, blade sheathed, her thumb gestured towards the cavern's interior, a nod to it as her gaze went to nari. "i'm not supposed to kill him so quickly, right? then how's that fare? does the condition apply to all the heads? or can i go all out on one before the others?"

With NIGHT having finished the three in her consecutive strikes, there was nothing more for Nari to do but sit and watch. She let her spear roll back into the crook of her elbow as she lowered her shield. The heat of the tunnel suddenly returning, she gave a slight cough as the other questioned her speed, making Nari cock her head.

Bringing up the message she had received, she scanned over it quickly. As usual, it was from the redacted source – something Nari had been meaning to ask around about, eventually. “Looks like my sources say it needs to have all three alive, but lowered…something about a howl. I guess that means don’t go all out, but lower the health enough that it feels the need to scream in rage?”

She swiped the menu out of existence, before smiling at NIGHT. “Assuming, of course, you don’t feel like repeating this fun again. Personally, I’d prefer not to have to return to this floor ever again if there’s no need to. You may not like the fourth, but at least we can sit in front of a fire and watch the snowfall. Here, the only thing you can do is…suffering.”

She spun around as she continued walking, turning to face NIGHT. Her voice took up the song where she had left off, a small smile playing on her lips as she carried the melody. “Come with me and be mine my love, Stay and break my heart. From shoes through the ancient mist, You bear the mark of my elven kiss!”

“Looks like my sources say it needs to have all three alive, but lowered…something about a howl."

"not yours?" night tilted her head, leaning back with her arms folded. after all the talk of going through trouble in getting the skill, she was surprised not to have seen it immediately during battle. not that it mattered when they came to tackling small fry. as long as she could make quick work of the enemies, there wasn't a need to steal aggro. she did raise a brow at the agony of their kill, though. "that's a little morbid. would it even feel anger if we bring it to the last of its health?"

and the player calmed, at talk of going home. a small grin formed on her face. "not that i dislike it," she considered, weight shifted onto one foot, her other angled on her toes. "but i certainly don't love it as much as you do."

"you're right though. let's get out of here soon."

as soon as nari started off, night was quick to dog her heels, hands stuffed in her jacket's pockets. and the melody was appreciated, but the more the player listened, the more she found questions in the lyrics. still, hazy in her own confusion, she made the choice to ask about them only later, once they got the hound out the way.

Spinning back the way they were headed, Nari let the melody fall for a moment as she took her bearings. She knew that the final room lay somewhere nearby, but she couldn’t quite remember exactly how far. Deciding there was nothing to it beyond simply following the path, she continued her singing – an activity that she was finding far more enjoyable here, than she had in the real world. Especially with the singular audience.

“From the shores through the ancient mist, You bear the mark of my elven kiss. Clear the way, I will take you home, To eternal bliss.” Another pause as she glanced around, recognising some of the area from her previous pass through. Nodding, more to herself than anything else, she let her spear fall into her hands, before continuing forwards.

The opening led into a larger cavernous area, the pillars supporting the roof standing off centre somehow. A quick glance backwards to make sure that NIGHT was there, before Nari took two further steps forward. She had planned on catching the hound off guard, waking it like she had originally. It, however, appeared to have other ideas.

A roar from her right side caught her attention, and she brought her shield up to deflect the swipe of – ‘was that it’s claw?’ – something large enough to almost engulf her entire torso. Emerging from behind a formation of rocks, the large bipedal thing was far from the creature she had originally faced. Nari felt her breath leave her for a second as the three health bars appeared, one above each head.

“Morríghan treoir mo sleá, agus stailc síos iad siúd romham.” She called out the prayer into the air while bringing her shield before her, deciding to focus on the defence, rather than taking the offensive. She hoped NIGHT would follow the lead, whittling the creature down slowly.

what.

it was bi-pedal, now?

night had barely begun to sink into the lovely tunes from her other, almost forgetting she was stuck in the depths of danger as a lack of obstacle preventing them from entering cerberus' lair had signaled a feeling akin safety as they trudged on. so the moment her gaze drifted around the room, barely even a step forward, to see the ambush of the beastman, the player was entirely caught off-guard.

like. by its figure, rather than the attack.

what happened to the quadruped she was so used to facing? why'd cardinal replace it with an actual furry? night was more confused than concerned, even going so far as to miss the drawing of aggro from nari's chanting as her curiosity sated about that skill use. with a wipe of her hand across her face, the woman willed herself back to reality, and took to assimilating one head's health bar into orange first and foremost.

Nari watched as NIGHT – almost belatedly – rushed forward and swung at one of the heads, causing the health bar of it to drop significantly. She could feel the heat rushing off the body of the creature, slowly causing her health bar to dip and regenerate. Casting aside concerns about the effect it was having on her – it truly wasn’t doing as much harm as she would’ve expected, from an environmental attack – she instead focused on doing what she did best; tanking her way through a fight.

Drawing her shield up in front of her, she began her call again, activating the enhanced skills that would bring Cerberus’ focus on her, and her alone. “Morríghan treoir mo sleá, agus stailc síos iad siúd romham.”

Nodding towards the creature, she called out to NIGHT as soon as her prayer was completed, determined not to leave all the work to the girl alone. “I’m going to keep its attention for now – don’t kill it outright, yeah? Focus on each of the heads in sequence.”

that sure was some chanting nari was performing. even in her focus towards one of cerberus' heads, she could hear the words from afar. and the player did bet, if she heard it enough, she may very well remember how to pronounce it the way her other did, too.

not that she'd need to say it. not that the prayer was necessary for her own self in the heat of the moment. a dip backwards with a distracted snout, the dog pulled one way above the others -- its snarl and attention on herself meant more than the two bites taken out of her tank. night appreciated the sneer, the chuff of annoyance that left brain shot her way when she'd deliberately raced off towards another, once her second strike had landed, and in the giant's shift towards the center of attention, she dove underneath the hound's belly with a flourish.

Content with the attention being entirely focused on her, Nari considered her options. She knew that her own attacks would be relatively useless in their current situation, that NIGHT could handle the offensive side on her own. Instead, Nari fell back onto the ideology of what her role was meant to do; to pull the attention to herself and focus on taking the hits.

Pulling her shield in front of her, she set her right leg forward, dropping her weight slightly and locking the knee into the back of the shield for further strength against the strikes she knew were coming her way. A shift in her weight, and the activation of the countering skills she had collected, and Nari knew she was ready.

“Come on, Cerbi. Let’s dance. Morríghan, neartaigh mo sciath. Tabhair an neart dom chun iad siúd is breá liom a chosaint.” Her eyes set upon the three heads, watching their dancing movements above and around her, she waited – her spear tip held steady in preparation for the sight of any chance to retaliate against the attacks that she knew the beast would be bringing against her.

nari's readying paid off.

where night was from, the hound's thrown bite to her tank was aggressive, reckless. with enough force to slam a player unsettled towards the ground in a swipe of its head forwards, the single head's maneuver disrupted the plans of its other siblings. they whined and snarled in response. that a horrific gnash was an explosive force, cerberus' lone head pulling away with enough fire in its mouth dripping akin to lava, just as the rest of its system began to argue back for their will of purpose stolen.

a sudden strike. it tore away at the center-most brethen. night's strike came at poor timing, as though to remind the dogs that they were here for a fight against intruders than amongst themselves. what started as a rage-induced bicker now returned to the canine's eyes upon the vermin that had entered their lair, joined only by the partner that fell behind its tank.

She had definitely drawn the attention of the large humanoid three headed dog towards herself. Staring up at the three heads, she smiled to herself, pleased with how well she had been doing this round. The howl skill had definitely made a difference on the situation, making her much more effective at drawing the attention to herself – something she felt relatively pleased with.

“Looks like we’re doing this! I’ll hit the third head, and hopefully soon it’ll begin to…” Her words dropped off as she ducked underneath another failed strike from the creature. Eyeing up the thing, she knew that she would have to make some changes in order to be able to hit the thing – it simply moved far too fast for the size of it.

Gritting her teeth as she prepared herself for what she knew she wasn’t going to like, she pulled up her menu and swiped away the shield that had provided so much comfort to her for so long. Sighing in preparation for what was about to occur, she readied herself to take the brunt of the attack, her shield no longer able to protect her like she desired.

already, they were playing with fire. the hell hound, their environment on the ninth, and now the racing health bars of cerberus himself. night darted to the last sibling that hadn't been touched by her blade just yet -- cut its life force almost in half, before scurrying back over to her tank, whom she realized had dropped her defenses.

as much as she hated to speak, perhaps this was the most opportune time, because she couldn't lower the boss' health without placing their regulation clause in danger. already, she was using her weakest weapon. if anything, cardinal was teaching them more than simple methods of destruction: there was temperance involved. the player hummed thoughtfully, eyes still moving between the hounds darting nari's way, and when they'd pulled back she placed a hand on her shield's shoulder. "do you think we're just about done here? not that i'm in any rush to part from you -- but i'd rather not see you put in dire straits like these again."
