[F05/SP/PT-CS] A Rumour of Wonders | <<Arabian Nights: The First of Many>>

Recommended Posts

“I’m sure by now you’ve heard of the cave of wonders.” The question, if it could be called that, was rhetorical – no answer was required. Even still, Nari found herself nodding at the cloaked figure’s words – acknowledging that she had heard of it, although that was entirely unnecessary. “Seems that an NPC is willing to lead you there, for a cost.”

“There’s always a cost. Let me guess – a favour for a favour?” The unspoken response confirmed what Nari already expected. She’d likely have to do something for this NPC, in order to be led there. She wasn’t surprised, and so far, the figure hadn’t provided her with anything she didn’t already know – something the other seemed to pick up on.

“The keep that the brother is kept in is well defended, but the problem will arise from what you do with the brother – keep him, or kill him? That’ll entirely depend on whether you want his ring or not. If he is kept, then the Cave of Wonders map may be received.” An either-or situation then. Nari always hated those, she wished that there was a loophole where one could receive both rewards. Knowing that it was pointless, she didn’t bother mentioning the desire – instead simply slipping the typical payment across to the individual before listening to the whisp of cloth that signified their leaving.

She still wondered at who her contact was – this time, a male voice. Although that seemed to change frequently. Whomever these brokers were, they usually provided relatively useful intel into the quests she was considering taking – or events happening throughout Aincrad that were worth attention. This time was a bit disappointing, but she figured that was simply due to there not being a lot to the quest itself.

Whatever the reason, she had her destination – and more importantly some insight into what the quest would entail. Storming a keep would be an interesting turn of events, if nothing else. It’d been a while since she’d headed into combat on her own. She had to admit, she was looking forward to the experience – if only to see how her ability to fight alone had been affected as of late.

Fortazaela was exactly as Nari remembered it – reminding her of something out of a middle eastern inspired scene. The bazaar - loud and overwhelming - could be heard even at this distance. Nari had passed through the busy area as quickly as she could, already knowing where to find the NPC she looked for, thanks to her info brokers. ‘At least they provided something useful.’

Her eyes roamed over the building in front of her – clearly a tavern, and in better shape than she had expected it to be. Her image of a rundown, barely accessible front had collapsed as she came to a stop before the well polished stone building. The windows presented a view inside, and it too was a disappointed to Nari. Well lit, cleanly in appearance – everything you wouldn’t expect from a tavern that an adventure began within.

“Well, I guess it doesn’t matter what I want, anyways.” Putting aside the thoughts of the prefect adventure tavern, she made her way inside – spotting the tan skinned individual towards the edge of the bar, appearing to ignore everything going on around him – yet still watchful, to those who knew the subtle hints.

Sliding in beside the NPC, Nari held out a hand to catch his attention. As soon as the eyes had shifted towards her, she began speaking – trying to activate the quest as quickly as possible. “I heard that your brother was missing, and that you were looking for someone to help locate, and bring him home.”

The NPC began its sob story – all about how his brother had been captured, the atrocity of it all, and how worried he was for his brother’s safety. Nari half-listened, waiting for the cues to respond in order to keep the conversation going. She watched the area around them, keeping an eye out for anything that would stand out as a possible piece of the quest.

“But I’ll hand it to you on a golden platter, you know familial bonds by now, I’m sure. Cassim is worth more than wealth.” Nari nodded, giving a sound of agreement in order to hurry along the topic – until she realised that the NPC had in fact finished speaking. Realising the stretching silence that had fallen over the two, Nari glanced around and found the dialogue box hovering before her, offering her the quest.

Almost immediately, Ali returned his attention to the bar – seemingly ignorant of Nari’s presence as the quest moved on to the next portion of its existence. Shaking her head at the almost unnatural feeling of it all, Nari made her way out of the tavern and back into the bright sunlight that covered Fortazela. In the corner of her eye, she could see the identifier that marked the path she needed to follow, likely leading to the keep in the desert that would be her destination.

“I hate sand.” The words – a growl against the whipping wind – where echoed by the soft chittering of Yuki upon her shoulders, the fox agreeing with the distaste. Trudging along, Nari wondered if all of this was worth it – the sand on the air cutting into her as it whipped about, driving to cutting speeds by the wind.

She’d travelled a fair distance already, and could see the large bandit keep just ahead – standing out against the minor storm like a welcome beacon to those travelling by. If it weren’t for the guide line that led directly to the area, she’d almost consider it a safe zone away from the winds and sands.

“Well, I’m sure they won’t mind an unwelcome guest appearing out of nowhere with the intent of bringing home their hostage. Right, Yuki?” The sarcasm on her voice was only enhanced by the discomfort that she felt – leaving a bitter, aggressive tone on the words.

As her approach to the keep – which was appearing more and more like a fortress – continued, Nari could begin to make out details of her destination. Her eyes scanning it, she made out signs of a well defendable location, clearly well-kept and capable of resisting any sort of incursion if properly manned. Her mind began to consider that coming alone may have been a bad idea, but she also knew that she wasn’t going to stop here – not when she could at least take a look at what she was facing.

“Besides, they’ll likely just let me right in.” She smirked as she spoke. She was sure that wouldn’t happen, but she also doubted that an entire regiment of bandits awaited her arrival. More likely she’d have to face a large number of them, or find a way to skirt around the defenders to find her quarry.

A single individual stood at the entrance to the keep. A large spear in hand, the individual eyed Nari’s approach, clearly aware of her – yet not speaking aloud. Curiosity taking over concern, she walked up the individual – stopping a few paces away and giving a slight wave with her right hand. Smiling, she decided to try speaking to the individual first. She doubted that it would do her any good in the long run, but if she could avoid fighting an entire keep, well, it was worth the effort.

“Hi there, I’m looking for a man named Cassim. You haven’t happen to have seen him, have you?” The guard seemed to twitch at the name, but rather than acknowledging the question simply ordered her to leave. She was tempted to repeat the question, but knew it would get her nowhere – at least the twitch had signified she was likely in the right place.

Her smile turning to a smirk, she lowered her spear slightly, bringing the tip down towards the guard in front of her. She could see the shift in her opponent’s stance as the system registered the beginning of combat. She watched as it made a step backwards, as if trying to flee what was about to occur.

“Hm…no, it’s far too late for that.” She whispered the words as she rushed forwards, thrusting her spear towards the target and activating her sword art. “Morríghan stailc síos mo namhaid.”

The spear pierced the man’s torso, and as Nari pulled back the spear, she could see her opponent’s body shudder as the stun took affect – locking the muscles in place and allowing her to reposition herself. She centered her weight, allowing her spear to fall into its usual place along the top edge of her shield, managing everything before the man could even begin to twitch in response.

As the stun affect washed away, Nari rushed forward, hoping to catch the man off guard. She knew that the fight would need to be ended quickly, that she had a lot more to do here – and she didn’t want to spend more time on this single individual than she needed to.

“It would make things a lot easier if you’d just, y’know, surrender. That way I could just breeze on by and get Cassim, and then get out of here.” She muttered the words as she shifted in place, bringing the spear thrusting forwards towards her target again in the hopes of catching him before he could react. She could already hear voices in the distance – telling her that he had somehow alerted the keep, although she’d seen no signs of him calling out, or setting off an alarm.

She watched as the health bar of her target dropped into the red – barely above the line that would signify its defeat. It seemed to hover – as if taunting her, and Nari knew there was little she could do about it, right now. She managed to shift her shield, catching the half-hearted strike against her and deflecting it away from her body.

Stepping back, she watched for her next opening. Dodging and parrying away the poor strikes of her opponent, she almost felt bad – there was little in the way of challenge with this conflict. It was obvious that she was far the superior of her opponent, and she wondered if the entire keep would be like this.

‘Maybe let’s focus on getting Cassim and being done with this, rather than finding a good fight. We can do that another time, when things are a little less…deadly.’ Shrugging inwardly, she moved forward, bringing her spear up and back in a heavy-handed maneuver, before thrusting it towards her opponent with as much force as she could muster. She knew it was likely a bit over the top, but she simply wanted to be done with this little sparring match, and on to the next area of the keep – and then homebound, once more.

The shards shimmered across the air before her as her opponent exploded. Moving quickly, she slipped into the keep and around a corner before more of the guards could arrive, deciding that she wanted to rest and recover a bit before taking on her next bout of combat. The first fight had been easy enough, but she wasn’t about to push her luck – she knew there would likely be more found within, and she needed to be ready for them.

‘Homebound? What’s that about?’ She thought back to the feeling in the tail end of the fight, the desire to return home. It was with slow realisation that she had been thinking about her house on the fourth, and not the home in the real world. It shocked her to consider how comfortable she’d become in this world – how normal it was. To consider her house here home, rather than that of her true, real home.

Her brow furrowed for a few moments as she contemplated, before realising that she needed to focus on the task at hand. She could ponder the realisation later, once she was away and free of any immediate danger.

Deciding that she was not taking any risks, she pulled up her menu and browsed through her available inventory. Stopping on the potion she wanted, she summoned a single bottle of it before consuming the piece, feeling the effects almost immediately.

She continued her way into the keep, avoiding the main causeways as she went in order to avoid as much detection as she could. She found herself mostly hitting dead ends, closets, and other storage rooms of little to no value. Her progress was pitiful at best, as she found herself trailing back to where she had originally entered the keep.

“Well, it looks like I’m not going to be able to sneak my way past the guards now…oh well.” She glanced at the main gate – still open, now unguarded. She was surprised that the reinforcements hadn’t rushed to this location. Or perhaps they had come here, and she’d simply not been here when they arrived.

She leaned against a wall for a moment, taking time to relax and let herself recover before the eventual fighting that was to come. She wasn’t sure exactly how many bandits this keep could hold – but she knew that she would need every bit of energy she could maintain once the true fighting began.

The clatter of sandals on stone caught her attention, pulling her back to the present as she realised that her pursuers had likely caught up with her. She’d figured that her ability to avoid them would only last so long, but she was surprised with just how quickly that time had passed.

Knowing that she couldn’t possibly outrun whatever was chasing her – and not wanting to, regardless – she stepped out into the main corridor of the hallway she was in, lowering her spear and setting her shield against her knee in preparation for the assault that would quickly greet her. Her breath came slowly – controlled, signifying her emotional balance in preparation for the fight, and the readiness that she would meet her opponents with.

“Here! The intruder is here!” The voice rang out through the corridor – not quite echoing, but definitely reverberating off the walls slightly. The first individual – covered in cloth that blocked the view of any defining features, and carrying a curved sword quickly rushed towards Nari. Behind him came three others – two brandishing curved swords as well, but the third wielding what appeared to be a larger spear.

Not wishing to provide them any advantage in the tight area, Nari rushed forward, pushing off and slamming her spear out and down towards the four rushing at her.  “Morríghan stailc síos mo namhaid.”

It was almost too simple, as each of the figures frozen in place – the paralysis and stun effects taking over control of their bodies as soon as the spear slashed across them. Nari watched as the frost from the tip of her weapon licked out against each of her opponents, coating them in the growing ice that would burn through their fabric coverings and deplete their health even more. She stepped back, letting the group slowly begin to move again, seemingly twitching and rising from their statuesque poses.

Already she’d nearly ended each of them, tearing through their feeble protection with barely any hinderance at all. She was sure that it would likely get more difficult if they were allowed to survive much longer, and although she was feeling confident, she decided that she didn’t want to push her luck – she’d end the fight as quickly as possible, and simply accept that it wouldn’t pose any challenge of her skill.

Ducking behind a single sweep strike of the closest, Nari drove her spear forwards, spinning it as it impaled the first, and managing to catch two of the three others. The final – seeing the attack coming towards it – managed to jump out of the reach of her weapon. Thinking that it had found an opening, the figure dove back in, swinging its spear towards Nari in a counter attack – only to have it clatter harmlessly off her shield and down towards the ground.

“Help! Help the intruder is here!” The man – from the vocals, Nari could tell it was meant to be male – began crying out. Glancing behind her as she heard the clatter of more sandals, Nari realised she was about to be surrounded. A less than desirable option, in her mind, she spun around the original combatant, placing itself between her and the newcomers in the hope of shielding herself slightly – and with any luck, impeding their ability to close in on her.

Silently – refusing to let the commotion bring forth any monologue or other cliché commentary from herself – she thrust her spear forward, aiming for each of her targets with a multitude of strikes meant to catch all of them at once.

Two of her strikes managed to connect with her opponents – two of the new opponents, of all possibilities. She felt herself silently cursing the original combatant who suddenly seemed determined not to be defeated here, managing to dodge the majority of her strikes against it. In return, it slammed its own spear in against her, managing to cause her health bar to dip a single digit, before recovering entirely.

The newcomers proved less deadly – two freezing in place as the stun affect washed over them, the third barely managing to swing its sword in the tight corridor. She had just considered focusing her attention on the original combatant, when she realised that it had exploded into shards in reaction to her thorns piercing through its body.

“Oh. That’s…one way to do it.” She turned her attention back to the three before her, noticing a fourth spinning around the corner and making its way towards her – scimitar held high above its head in what Nari found an almost comical way.

If there hadn’t been the danger of actual death, she’d almost swear she was bored. Although the bandits swarmed around her, Nari barely felt concerned – their attacks were barely scrapping her armour, leaving little more than dent marks across her body as they tried to overwhelm her defences and healing – neither of which was having any success for her would be assailants. Still, she knew that she had to take the situation seriously, otherwise she’d be in real danger.

Swinging around, she broke free from the swarming bodies. Putting a small amount of distance between herself and the bandits, she levelled her shield and spear, glancing at her stat bars and realising just how much she’d already expended on the fight. She wasn’t worried about running out of anything right now, but it was certainly getting close to the point where she’d need to start conserving herself.

“Alright squishy, let’s dance.” Stepping forward, she swung her spear in a wide arc again, aiming to hit all four targets at once. The large area of effect skill was proving useful – especially in such cramped conditions, where they had a harder time evading her strikes.

All but one exploded into shards as her strike swept through them, the single survivor frozen in place as it was forced to watch its companions disappear. Nari wondered if the things could even feel compassion towards one another – they were just computer generated things after all. Yet she’d seen the NPCs in the villages show emotions, to a degree. As well as some of the quest based NPCs she’d encountered.

“Well, just how human are you, then?” She found herself muttering the question aloud, even as she set herself up to deliver the final strike. It shocked her to realise that she was starting to see things beyond just the game – a sign that she had once again spent far too long in this world, and that it was all becoming too normal.

Determined not to let herself slide into the concerns of real versus unreal – and all the mental trauma that would likely bring on – she repositioned herself and moved in for the final strike. She swore she would find a way to overcome this sudden concern, that she wouldn’t allow it to hinder her progress towards freedom in any way.

Sighing a breath of relief as the last one exploded, she listened for the sound of more approaching opponents. As the moments passed, she slowly came to realise that the silence was real, and that no further opponents were coming her way. Taking the reprieve to relax a bit, she leaned back against the wall – her mind immediately going back to the conundrum that had begun during the fight itself.

“They’re not real, just artificial creations. They may mimic emotions, but they can’t really feel them…” She glanced down at the fox at her feet, suddenly unsure. She’d felt so much emotional connection with Yuki – considering her as nothing more than a collection of numbers was just too difficult. “Well, I certainly didn’t expect to suddenly be having a question of morality towards computer programs today.”

The fox cocked her head at Nari, as if trying to question her commentary. Unsure of how to take the response – it certainly seemed to understand her, in some ways – Nari simply stared back at the fox, left speechless.

Knowing that she couldn’t simply remain leaning against the wall forever, Nari pushed herself back into movement – forcing her feet to carry her further down the hallway. She hadn’t managed to search much of the complex yet, but she was fairly certain that she’d find some sort of dungeon, keep or otherwise containment room somewhere in the facility. She only hoped that this would be one of those quests where the person she was sent to retrieve was still alive.

She found herself winding through a maze of corridors, stairs and long hallways in her attempt to find something that would contain the person she was looking for. She was quickly finding herself passing through similar areas – questioning whether she’d started wandering in circles yet or not.

“I swear if I get trapped in a stupid keep for the rest of eternity, you’re never going to hear the end of this, Yuki…” She turned another corner, and found herself facing another long hallway. This one, however, contained another individual. Nari recognised the outfit almost immediately – another of the bandits that she had thought she was through dealing with. “Well, let’s get this over with, I guess…”

Drawing her shield up in front of her, she decided to wait for the figure to notice her. It didn’t take long, and then it was moving down the hallway towards her – shrieking as it did so, in some weird display of a tribalistic like charge. Nari set herself, letting the first strike of the figure rush over her head as she rolled out of the way, before bounding up behind the opponent and setting herself once more.

A slight glimmer as she remembered her early days of fighting – realising just how much had changed since those days. Tucking away the thought, she thrust forward with her spear, aiming for the target’s exposed back area in a hope of catching it off guard.

‘Let’s end this quickly, find Cassim, and get out of here.’ She was more than done with this whole keep, and just wanted to return home and leave this whole adventure behind her.

Barely even an effort as she thrust the spear into the targets back, watching as the health bar on her opponent drained, and the body seemed to twitch into a frozen stance – the muscles locking up on it. She stepped to the side, watching for any sign of the stun effect wearing off, lining up her next strike carefully.

Almost with a careless ease, she thrust her spear forward into the target. Combat had become so monotonous lately, and Nari felt as if she was slowly losing out on something – something that had been there once before.

She found herself wondering once again how she had ever feared this game. The monsters, the creatures she fought – they were only dangerous at lower levels. Here, once one spent enough time and focus levelling, anything could be overcome. There was no difficulty to it – simply a matter of collecting numbers and putting in the time.

“The problem with games…”

As the last burst into shards, Nari pushed down the hallway towards the door that the NPC had been guarding. Surprisingly, she found not a closed doorway – but an open archway. Curled in the corner, staring at her as she approached, was an older man with similar features to Ali.

“Cassim, I assume?” She held out a hand as she remained in the doorway, waiting for the NPC to rise. “Your brother, Ali sent me to fetch you. If you’ll come along, we can get you back to him.”

She took a single step into the room, and almost immediately the NPC began coming to life. She listened as he thanked her for coming to rescue him, for braving the dangerous bandits. Nari had to bite her tongue as she listened to the praise, knowing it was nothing more than present dialogue. Still, she wanted nothing more than to be done with the quest.

Once she was sure he was done speaking, and would follow her lead, she left the room. Winding her way back through the keep, she led the NPC back into the wild lands, and towards the small civilised area that she had original come from.

The reunion was about what one would expect from a game like this – a touching coming together, limited emotions but signs of something deeper. All of it left Nari untouched. She couldn’t have cared at this point whether the quest had returned Cassim, or left him to die in the desert. The revelation in that scared her, and as she collected her reward, she found her attention turned inwards. The sudden darkness concerning her as she considered its implications.

Still lost in thought, she turned and made her way towards home. Towards comfort. Towards what she prized most.
