[F4-PP] Ice Fishing, Part 1

Recommended Posts

Nicklaus had woken up this morning by an alarm notification. Today was the day her sister was going to show him around Snowfrost town, and go on a camping adventure on the frozen Frostbite Lake. It was the first time he will visit the cold fourth floor and he was excited. He had received direct instructions for him to go to the teleportation gate and to stop by Rebekah's cafe on the fourth floor while he was at it. She had a few things to do in her shop this morning before she would join him on this journey.

At first, he was hesitant to spend a lot of time on a cold floor, but her sister's ultimate persistence had worn on him after a long time. He had finally agreed. In addition, she was going to show him how to catch fish on the ice, which was something that he wanted to try for the first time. Therefore, there were a lot to do and it was time to get going. He dressed warmly and made his way to the teleportation gate. He would arrive on floor four at any moment now.

He then walked over to Rebekah's shop. She had provided directions to get here. It was going to be very important for him to know where this place was located as he would know where he can find his sister. That reminded him, he would have to work on getting his own merchant shop up and running eventually.

Rebekah had been preparing for today's adventure since she had woken up this morning. She knew she needed to get a lot of supplies ready from a tent, supplies to make campfire, and food. One of the reasons why Rebekah had asked Nicklaus to meet her at her shop was so that he could help carry some of the supplies for her. In addition, she wanted him to try out some of her food that she sells in her shop. One of the items that she had wanted him to try were the beaver tails that she had made.

Beaver tails were a type of fried pastry where the dough is flat and thin resembling the shape of a beaver tail. It can then be topped with a variety of toppings but the most common one is a black chocolate sauce which resembled the colour of an actual beaver tail. She had thought it was delicious and wanted Nicklaus to try one out for today.

It did not take long for Nicklaus to step into her shop. Rebekah greeted her older brother, "Good Morning. Do you want to try some freshly crafted pastries that I made this morning?" Rebekah said. Rebekah handed him a beavertail to eat and consumed one herself as well.

Nicklaus had finally entered Rebekah's cafe for the first time. It was a cozy place, a mix between a place where one can buy boutique and amazing pastries as well as meals. Rebekah had handed one of her signature pastries to Nicklaus to try. He had not had a beaver tail in quite a while and it tasted delicious. He looked up and saw that he had been granted a gathering buff for the rest of today. Hopefully, that will come in handy for today's adventure.

Nicklaus looked around and saw that her sister was packed and ready to head out for today's adventure. It was finally time to leave behind the cozy town, but before they went anywhere, Rebekah wanted to show him around the fourth floor, especially Snowfrost Town. She had mentioned something about going to The Frosty Cafe to get some hot drinks before they left. It was a floor four specialty, and the lines are generally packed throughout the day.

However, being a local of the fourth floor, Rebekah had told him the best times to go before the line went out the door. They went and it was lucky, they did not have to wait long for them to begin ordering their hot drinks. Rebekah had ordered the signature drink for both of them, the hot chocolate. Nicklaus took one sip of the drink and it tasted delicious. It was the best hot chocolate he had since he was stuck here in Aincrad for the last few years.

After they had received their drinks from The Frosty Cafe, Rebekah decided that it is time to show Nicklaus around the sights and the important places in Snowfrost Town. After all, this was where they would hopefully meet up going forward. It had been hard for Rebekah to be able to spend that much time leaving her shop unattended to. Therefore, it would be important for him to have the ability to not get lost in this town. Rebekah started by explaining to Nicklaus where this cafe was in relation to the portal.

Shen then walked past her shop and told him this is where her shop is and where she was staying. She had rented a room in town but Rebekah had been looking at getting a larger place in the future. As they had kept walking, Rebekah also showed Nicklaus where some of her favourite shops are on this floor to obtain supplies. Unlike the towns on floor one, Snowfrost was a lot smaller, and therefore there were not as many shops or options. For example, the town of beginnings could have a lot of blacksmiths but this town may only have one.

This was one of the perks of living here, it was a smaller closely knit community especially since they had to struggle with the weather and the cold on a daily basis. It was finally time Rebekah lead Nicklaus out of the town and towards the frozen Frostbite Lake. It was not far from the town, so it would only take a few minutes once they had left town.

As soon as Nicklaus had walked into the wilderness and on to the Frostbite lake, he was stunned. The scenery was amazing. The developers of Aincrad must have spent a lot of time recreating the feeling of a winter wonderland here on the fourth floor. He was amazed by every little detail that he could see. He followed her sister, as they made their way onto the lake. They were going to find a place to set up a camp so they could preform some ice fishing.

It was his first time ice fishing on the lake, so he was excited for this opportunity. He knew that it was not everyday that he got to experience something like this. Rebekah had been meaning to show him around the floor that she had lived in and it was everything as she described.

After walking for a while, her sister finally decided it was time to stop and set up their base here. Instantly, her sister pressed a button and a lot of things had showed up. It was now time for him to help her out. The first thing they needed to do was to build a campfire on the lake so they can keep themselves warm. In addition, she had set up a shelter while they were at it. It would help keep them warm enough from the elements. It was not that cold outside yet, but this would help them survive the weather.

As the pair of them started setting up camp, Rebekah's first thought was to start digging around in the snow to gather snow to boil into some water. They also needed to compact the snow underneath so they can set up a shelter in this cold weather. This was the minimum necessities that they required to survive. Even though, she has never done this before in the snow, Rebekah was always prepared for the worst in case of a freak snowstorm on the fourth floor.

Therefore, she had always been prepared to wait out the storm in a safe place before resuming her journey back home. Therefore, this was a rare opportunity for her to test out her survival equipment that she takes with her whenever she leaves the safety of the town in this floor. She did not want to be frozen and be killed by the environment in Aincrad. Even though it was not that cold, she knew they wanted to be prepared for the worst. Therefore, it would be important to test this out and then she can decide if she needed to upgrade her emergency survival kit with better equipment for the future.

As Rebekah was setting up a basic campsite to fish in the ice, she decided to dig around a bit more and build up a snow wall to help block some of the wind. She knew that the wind chill could make it much worse. While she was digging in the snow, Rebekah found something useful.

While her sister was busy starting to build some type of shelter to protect them from the elements. Nicklaus decided it was time to start digging a hole to begin ice fishing. One of the things they would need is food. Rebekah had previously told her when they were setting up this trip was that she would bring food but it would be helpful if he was able to catch some fish. This would allow Rebekah to save some of her emergency rations instead of using them up on this trip.

Therefore, he got to work digging a hole. He was not an expert at fire making so he decided to leave that part to her younger sister. He had the topics memorized in his head, the most important things for survival was shelter, water and fire. Currently, her sister was setting up shelter, and once fire is done, water would become very easy. So, it was time to move on to the second tier of important items which was food.

So far, he had not successfully caught a single fish since he had obtained the fishing profession, so this would be a good time for him to start to learn. This was going to be a challenge and he was not going to stop until he caught something today. Last time, Nicklaus had gave up far too easily.

This time, Nicklaus had finally caught something when his line had pulled immediately.

Now that the shelter was partially completed, Rebekah should now turn her focus to making a fire to stay warm. These were two of the most important things that would keep them alive in this winter wonderland. Luckily for Rebekah, Nicklaus had already began setting up a fire pit so everything was ready for her to light a fire. Rebekah had brought some matches. These were the good old fashion way of making a fire. She did not want to attempt to create friction from rubbing two pieces of wood together. Besides, that would be too cold to work.

As she was setting up the fire, she noticed Nicklaus had finally caught something. It had taken him a while but he had finally caught some fish and a treasure chest full of weapons. He would need to identify them but she realized these were likely better than the equipment that he had with himself. Hopefully, it would not be too difficult for him.

As the matches lighted up instantly, Rebekah got to work on transferring the fire into the wood and the kindling in the fire pit. It had worked immediately, as things in Aincrad were a lot easier than real life. As long as she knew the theory behind how everything works. Rebekah got back at digging up some snow into an empty pot to boil some water. That would be important for their survival, as she wanted to avoid picking up a frostbite debuff here on her home floor.

Now that her sister had been getting most of the essentials set up, Nicklaus decided it was time to focus back at fishing. While he was at it, he could feel the excitement of finally succeeding for the first time. After all, he had seen her sister's success previously at foraging for materials, but he had always wondered was being a fisherman a waste of time. He finally received the answer, and knew that it would help him out in the long run. He was a merchant, and his first treasure chest would help him as he needed to stock up on items to identify. Now that he had four, he was tempted to look for more.

The warmth of the fire that her sister built made it a lot more bearable. He does not know how her sister was able to move efficiently in the snow, he was having a lot of trouble. Perhaps, it was related to their experiences so far. She had spent a lot of her time on this floor and would be acclimatized to the weather. For someone such as himself, being stuck on floor one was no help at all for him especially since he had never faced any different weather. Floor one was perfect in that way, the weather was not too bad for anyone who stayed there.

As he looked at his line, he wondered if he should help out a bit more, but realized, his job today was to catch fish for food. It did not take too long but Nicklaus already had caught two fish.

There was something about Nicklaus that was different today. Perhaps he had felt more comfortable. Rebekah could not recall the last time he was having this much success in this game. He had been trying to feel things out and had mighty struggled the last time she had saw him. This time, however, Nicklaus had acted completely different. It had felt like he was at ease with everything that was around him. He had finally settled in and was acting on instinct rather than thinking about things.

Rebekah got back to finishing up the rest of the shelter. She could tell that her older brother was a bit cold and not used to this weather. Rebekah was used to it but that did not stop her from being stationary. She knew that staying still in a cold place like this floor was always a bad idea. The idea is continually keep moving so she continue to generate body heat. Luckily, she had built the wall high enough to block enough wind from breezing past. The wind chill was no joke to deal with.

As she was doing this, Rebekah made sure to continually be on the lookout for more materials nearby. This was something that she had constantly done while setting up the tent. Rebekah hoped that she was able to find something rare today, but it seems like it will not be as easy as she thought. She prepared another pot of snow to be ready to be melted down as the first pot of snow had already melted. The water has not boiled yet, as she wanted it to be safe to drink or use.

As the campsite came to life, Nicklaus knew that it was his job to continue to fish. He was looking to try to reach level two by the end of the trip. He also knew that he was not very useful in these settings. The least he could do was to make sure they had enough food to survive for the trip. He passed the fish that he had caught to Rebekah who would then cook them out here in the cold. He was wondering what type of food her sister would make. He knew he wanted something warm out here on the fourth floor.

It was just the type of thing that would make the time go pass by a lot easier. While her sister was constantly moving, she was easily able to stay warm. He, on the other hand, was sitting down on a chair here. While it was comfortable, it was also quite cold as he was not moving around to keep his body warm. Luckily, the fire nearby made it a lot warmer, and the shelter that Rebekah had set up was able to block out a lot of the cold wind chill from hitting them. It was tolerable, not cold enough to give him frostbite but just enough to let him know that he was outside in the elements.

As he watched the fishing line, waiting for the next fish to arrive, he wondered if Rebekah had finished setting up everything yet.

Rebekah continued getting the camp ready. It was almost complete, she did not plan on staying overnight this time. Perhaps that would be next week. Their plan today was to allow Nicklaus to reach level two at fishing, and then for them to try out what worked today and what did not work. They did plan on going on a sibling bonding camping trip sometime in the near future, but this was a good set up to allow them to stay warm in the cold fourth floor.

She looked back at Nicklaus and he had already found two treasure chests, this was a lot more then she had ever found in this game. He had already picked up four new weapons to identify, which would be good for him as it will likely be a lot stronger than his current weapon that he had. She also knew that he was hesitant to identify her items until he had gotten a lot stronger since he did not want to mess up the items that she had found.

Rebekah got back to work, and started to think what she could make with the fish that he had caught on this floor. What was the perfect type of dish that would go along with the weather today. At first she thought about making some sort of seafood tower letting the seafood shine, but decided to make a stew or type of soup. It will be filling and warm at the same time. Rebekah needed extra water and continue to boil snow to melt into water.

Nicklaus was surprised to find out that he had already found two treasure chest, containing a total of eight items to identify. Today was definitely going well, he knew that he would need to continue to get better at fishing, he would eventually find more and better items. Currently, all of his items that he had found are tier 2 which is a lot stronger than what he had at the moment. He would be very happy to trade it in and switch to a stronger and better equipment. Now, all he needed was either another trinket or a defensive item such as armour or shields. That would help him a lot in his ability to survive in this game.

So far, he had been living the easy life in Aincrad, and he knew it would soon get a lot tougher. He had wondered why her sister was spending so much time trying to get him to level up and help him out with the early levels. He decided to finally ask this question, "Why are you spending so much time helping me level up?" Nicklaus had asked. He knew that she was busy person and she had constantly taken the time out of her day to ensure his development and help him level from the very beginning until now. He knew that being her only family member in the game must play a small role in this, but there must be some other alternative motive for her to do this. He did not think she was doing this for everyone.

It was finally time for Rebekah to create a fish stew. Luckily for her, she had already prepared a lot of the chopped vegetables ahead of time, and created all the broth. She was not crazy, as she knew cooking out here would be difficult without a full kitchen. Those were the things that professional chefs such as herself had gotten accustomed to, and anytime she was not in her elements, it made cooking a lot more difficult.

To begin, she decided to put the chopped ingredients into a boiling pot of water. Rebekah immediately went to find more snow nearby to melt, as she realized there was not enough liquid. As she was getting more snow, she thought she found something rare in the snow, she went over to examine it.

After putting that back into her pocket, Rebekah continue to look for ways to improve her food. It was now time for her to cut the fish and for Rebekah to add it to the stew. While she was working on that, her older brother had asked her a question. She took a second to find the words before responding, "Well, I have not seen any family members and I do not want to lose you. I know you are a reckless person, so I want to do everything I could to help you survive the first few levels, so you are a lot stronger before you jump into reckless things." Rebekah explained. That was true about her older brother, if he did stupid things such at a higher level, the margin of error would be a lot greater.

That was something he had not considered. Yes, he had always did things without thinking about the full consequences, but it never really hit home how family members would be worried about that. That was a true point. He suppose her sister just wanted to see him safely reach level thirty two before he started picking fights with others. This was her way of keeping her eye on himself. While he did not need anyone to babysit him, he knew that this gave Rebekah some peace of mind. Besides, he knew that if he could gain some important and valuable lessons from her younger sister, he would listen.

He looked at the stew that she was cooking today. He can smell the aroma that was coming from the pot. Nicklaus as starting to get hungry now, and she was doing this at the perfect time. "I seen the names on the memorial on the first floor. I am not going to be an idiot and make you worry." He reassured her younger sister. He knew his limitations and the last thing he wanted to do was to end up on that list.

He then turn his focus back towards the fishing line, as he had been fishing all day. He knew that he had picked some lucky bait today since his line was actually working for once. It was rare for him to have such a good fishing trip, but perhaps it had something to do with the food he had ate earlier on this floor.

While those words had calmed her down quite a bit, Rebekah wanted Nicklaus to promise her that he would never do that. She wanted a promise because she knew that he would never go back on his word and family always comes first. "Promise me, you will not do something stupid." Rebekah said.

She waited for his reply before going back to the fish stew that she had been cooking for the past while. It was almost done, as cooking in Aincrad had simplified a lot of the steps and wait time that it would normally take in the world. She took out a few bowls and poured some of it out to Nicklaus. She then took the other bowl and began to dig into the meal. It was delicious, as Rebekah had added some other seafood that she had purchased this morning. It tasted like a traditional chowder, but with the fresh fish that was caught on this floor. It was delicious.

It did not take long for her to finish her portion, so she began to start cleaning up, since the dishes need to be washed. To do this, Rebekah needed a bit more water, so off she went to forage in the snow to boil it into water. She realized how easy life was with clean water from a tap. Out here, she would have to boil and melt the snow each time she wanted some water. It was just not very efficient to keep doing this, but luckily, they were almost done for the day.

His younger sister wanted a promise that he will try to stay safe. He knew that she had essentially manipulated this conversation into forcing a promise out of him. However, he had no other alternatives that he can say right now. He had to agree. Nicklaus responded, "Yes, I will promise you I will try to stay safe." He knew just as well as anyone it was impossible to stay safe in this game, however, what he could do is not get himself into tricky situations that he would have no way of getting out of. That was for sure.

After he responded, Rebekah decided not to force him to say anything more. She had handled him a bowl of her freshly cooked food from the pot above the campfire that she had built out here in the fourth floor. It tasted delicious as expected of her. She was always the best cook in the family, having picked up the skill at a very young age. He could taste the freshness of the fish that he had caught today, and that was the star of the dish that he had cooked.

Once they were finishing eating, Rebekah got to work on looking for water to clean the dishes, so he turned his focus back to the fishing rod. He would be very happy if he was able to catch a third treasure chest today, as it would allow him to finish the day on a high note. He knew there was not much time left before it was time to leave so he would have to do it quickly.

As Rebekah got to work with the dishes, she turned to Nicklaus who had caught his third treasure chest of the day. In addition, he was already able to obtain a new level immediately as he had earned rank two in fishing. "Congratulations on reaching Rank 2. Can you help me with taking down the campsite?" Rebekah asked.

Her older brother got to work as told, as he started putting away his fishing stuff and began to destroy the snow wall that was blocking the wind and taking down the shelter. It was not long that it was only the campfire left. She then turned to Nicklaus and asked, "Now that you reach level two, have you thought about taking the quest from Olympus?"

While she waited for him to read the quest notification, she looked around and they had disassembled their entire shelter. The only thing left was to put out the fire that they had created. She did that immediately, and they began making the trek back out of Frostbite lake back towards Snowfrost town. They had accomplished their goal today. Nicklaus was able to obtain rank two of his gathering skill, and she was able to spend some good family bonding time. It would not be long until they gotten back to civilization and she would finally be able to go home and take a hot bath. She deserved it after a very intense week where she had done a lot of quests. It would be time for her to relax very soon.

Now that he finally gotten what he had came out here for, it was time to pack and leave. Rebekah had asked him for help while she was doing the dishes. He happily obliged and got to work. After all, all he had been doing was sitting on a comfortable chair and sat there to fish all day long. He had done nothing useful yet, and it would be time to help her sister out so they could finally leave. He was excited to go identify the equipment that he had found, and it would also be time for him to return indoors back to someplace a lot warmer. He had enough of the cold for today.

While that was happening, her younger sister had asked him if he wanted to take the olympus quest. He did not know what he was talking about and decided to go through his quest log. There it was, it had shown up just as he reached level two. He quickly saw the rewards, and knew that was a great reward. He was going to do this first thing tomorrow morning. "Thank you for letting me know. I am planning on doing this. Do you know if this also exists for the merchant profession?" Nicklaus asked.

As Rebekah responded, she had put out the rest of the fire and now they were making their way back to Snowfrost town. It did not take him long to finally reach the teleportation gate so he can finally go home back to floor one to recover. He was on such a high from today that he would worry about the quests and the items the next day.

He had asked another question as they approach town. Rebekah responded, "Yes, there is another quest available for merchants. However, you must be level two in your profession prior to taking the quest." She knew that level two would mean a significant milestone in any person's profession in this game. Rebekah also figured that Nicklaus would finally reach level two in both fishing and appraising very soon. He would be busy for a few days, and that would give her time to take on a solo activity.

As they made their way to the teleportation gate, Rebekah finally said goodbye to her older brother. They would meet up in a few days, likely after he had done both quests. She was finally able to head back home after such a long and difficult day. This meant it was time to relax, so Rebekah finally got her bath tub ready to take a long but relaxing bath. She knew this is what she needed after spending the day out in the wilderness of Frostbite lake.

As she pondered over today's activities, she knew that both Olympus quests are relatively safe, so she did not need to worry too much. Thinking back to herself, she knew that she would soon need to go on another training mission, perhaps she should find a friend or companion to challenge a dungeon or go to mother's treasure once again. She had her eyes out on purchasing a property, so she would need every bit of gold available to finance her dream property on the twenty second floor near the famous lake.
