[PP-F01] Troll after dark (Nari-Lanreth)

Recommended Posts

Fae sat on top of her rock, legs pulled up to her chest as she stared at the moon above. It was wierd to think that there wasn't actually a sky up there, but instead another floor the second floor for that matter, a floor that had been explored long ago. It was a cold night and Fae had her hood pulled all the way up barely stopping the chill from reddening her nose and cheeks. Fae's breath hung in the air as she sat, the wind blowing her cloak around as she lost herself in thought.

The chill sank in deeper as Fae unwrapped her arms from around her legs. Pulling up her menu as she did scrolling through her friends list stopping on a single name Nari-Lanreth. She had met the purple haired woman 2 years ago, and by then, she had already been a lot higher level than herself. Tapping the name a few options appeared and with a few more taps a message was sent out.

To: @Nari-Lanreth

Hey Nari,

I know it's been a really long time and that it's late. I'm asking a lot of someone like you, but do you think you could meet me somewhere?

signed, FaeFae

Fae attached her coordinates to the simple message and sighed into the air. She knew what she was asking for was late notice, the sun having set a few hours prior, but she held on to her hope as she wrapped herself a bit hard in her light pink and blue cloak.

The ding of a message caught Nari off guard. There weren't many who would be messaging her this late, and the few that would be were busy with numerous errands - or sleeping. Curiosity perked, Nari opened the message and quickly glanced it over, noting a name that she had not seen in...well, it had been quite some time. A surprise, to be sure, but one that Nari found welcoming. She considered her response carefully, before pulling up her messaging system and crafting the response.

To: @Faerie
From: @Nari-Lanreth

Hey FaeFae! Long time, indeed! Looks like you're down on floor one, right? I'll head out in a few moments. Should be there in...about twenty minutes, maybe?

And no worries about it all, I was still up and about!

See you soon;

Nari<>

She quickly packed away the few pieces she'd been working on, deciding that it was more important to go see what was causing Fae to ping her. She knew that this world had numerous problems, although the First Floor shouldn't be too overwhelming. Especially given that they'd had two years to progress. Nari shook her head; there was nothing she was going to guess here. She'd just have to go see what was up, and hope that it was nothing more than a minor personal conflict - or perhaps an annoying boar that wouldn't leave the other alone.

"Come on, Yuki. We're going for a little walk. Oh don't give me that." The fox pretended not to hear for a moment, rolling over to face the opposite direction. Nari knew better than to give in, and instead opened the door to the front - having to step back out of the way as the fox came barrelling through almost instantly. Shaking her head, Nari followed with a laugh. At least someone's in a good mood.

The walk to the main teleporter, and then from there to the coordinates that Fae had shared took longer than Nari had anticipated. Almost half an hour later, she found the purple haired girl, waving a greeting as she slowly approached. "Hey! Sorry about the delay, I came as quickly as I could, but it was definitely further than I expected."

Her eyes roamed over the area, noticing fairly quickly the lack of concerning boars, or...well, anything of concern. Aside from Fae, there seemed to be nothing out here. Hesitantly, Nari spoke her query to the other, trying to figure out what was going on. "You sounded like you needed a bit of help...what's going on?"

Nari's response came just a few minutes later and it was a relief, she was worried that the other purple haired woman wouldn't be able to show, and with no one left to turn to she needed her to come. The message said she'd be there in about twenty minutes so Fae hopped off of the rock, opting to be more visible for her friends approach. Leaning her back against the rock Fae watched from the direction of the Town of Beginnings with it being the only way to teleport to the first floor she knew exactly where Nari would appear.

It was another thirty minutes before Fae saw the purple hair cross through the edge of the trees. The woman sporting it notably different from the last time she saw her, and not just with the scythe she now carried. Nari already exuded more confidence than she had in the past her demeanor looking like almost a completely different person. Fae rushed to Nari when she saw her wrapping her arms around her in a tight hug, before releasing almost immediately and backpedaling "I'm sorry, thank you, I mean for coming." Fae stammered out before Nari's greeting, giving her a moment to calm herself down before responding. "Oh don't worry about that at all, I didn't even know what floor you were on, you got here pretty fast all things considered. Which, means a lot." Fae watched as Nari looked around growing embarrassed as she questioned what was going on. "I'm sorry, I should have explained in my message." Fae paused for a long moment before steeling her resolve.  "I don't think you ever met Lightbringer, I know I talked about him a few times." Fae looked away again turning her head back towards the rock "He would have made a good frontliner, he wanted to head the charge more than anyone else I know. Fae looked back at Nari her arms folded across her chest in a protective posture. "I want to follow in his footsteps, and I can't yet. I didn't know who to call, I haven't heard anything about Avoryn in the last two years, and Angel..." Fae drifted off as she realized she was giving too much information. "There is something I need to do, and I'm too scared to do it alone." Fae met Nari's gaze eyes pleading "Can you come with me?" Fae held her gaze hoping that Nari would agree, and that she could put all of this behind her.

She was met with a bundle of limbs that equated to a hug, before Nari found herself barraged with a combination of words, sentences and concerns. She listened carefully, her eyes blinking a few times as she tried to take it all in. Names that she recognised, as well as a few that were new to her, passed through the air and into her ears, her mind trying to place them before having to play catch-up with the rest of the conversation. Huh...must be something important...following in footsteps? Leading the charge...? She couldn't quite figure out what the other was getting at, but she waited patiently until they finished their explanation, or what amounted to an explanation.

"Help...? Sure, I mean if I can help, absolutely...but, uh...what's got you so rattled? I mean, what could it be? I don't mind helping out, just...seems odd that you'd need help with something around here." She waved a hand towards the area around them. Her mind remembered the days when the first floor was scary, when it was something that could end your life in an instant if you made a mistake. Now, it was a pasture of paradise that she could walk through unhindered, unworried. It was no worse than being in her house - except if a player-killer appeared.

At the thought, her eyes shot around, as if looking for an ambush. Yuki hadn't reacted upon their approach, and she trusted the fox's nose at sniffing out dangers. It was still smart to be aware and on alert, however. "What can I help with?"

Fae looked away before looking back at Nari "There's a floor boss level creature out here." Fae waived her hand to the east "I haven't heard anyone talk about it, but... Well me and Lightbringer ran into it about two years ago." Fae looked at the floor her voice falling to a whisper "He... Didn't make it." Fae paused for a moment before steeling herself and looking back up "Lightbringer wanted more than anything to help get us out of this game, and I am tired of hiding away on this floor, sitting in my house just waiting for someone else to help me. I want to follow in his footsteps. But I can't, not until this... Monster is long gone, by my blade." Fae's eyes lit with a fire that didn't seem to match the rest of her appearance. "I'm scared though, I don't know if I am strong enough." Fae wrapped her arms around her chest "I didn't know who else to turn to. You're the only person I know who can help me with this. Please. Can you come with me?" Fae did her best not to let tears form in her eyes as she begged for Nari to come with her.

Whatever Nari had been expecting, this wasn't it. The story, in a sense, she'd perhaps expected - it was one that seemed to ring out across Aincrad from many different individuals. Herself included. In this world, someone had lost...well, someone. It wasn't uncommon. Nor was it uncommon to feel lost after such an event, to feel left alone and unable to move forwards. It was something that Nari herself had struggled with for a time. If I hadn't had someone to rely upon...

"Yeah, I'll come with you. For sure." Her smile left nothing to doubt, no hesitation in giving the answer. Fae needed her, and Nari would be there for her. It was the least she could do, all things considered. "I'm not really familiar with this floor boss...what do you know about it? Anything from the info brokers that could be of use? Did you want to go now, or head back to town and prepare a bit?"

Her questions came out in a rapid fire sequence, not trying to overwhelm the girl in anyway. Nari had simply turned to the task at hand, ready to head out and face whatever Fae needed to face. To bring it down so that the two of them could move forwards, to fight further. She knew the roadblocks that people faced, the limitations that those could place upon one another. Nari had felt those roadblocks a few times, and knew that sometimes someone else simply taking the lead could help.

"You lead, I'll follow." The words were spoken simply, as if just another phrase. She held her scythe behind her in a relaxed manner, her weight shifted to her right leg as she leaned ever so slightly. Her face was an expression of stoicism, ready to follow once Fae began leading.

Fae was filled with relief as Nari agreed to join her, not only because she had agreed, but because she clearly actually cared and wasn't bothered at all to help her. Nari asked a string of questions as Fae just stood there watching her. Nari had really changed for the better since they met so long ago unlike Fae. Nari was standing there completely calm and confident, a complete presence of someone that Fae could rely on. Shaking her head Fae began processing all of the questions that had been launched her way "I honestly don't know a lot... I only saw it for a second before it knocked me away... and then... no I don't know anything about it." Fae thought back on the past and tried to recall anything she could remember, and as much as the memory had emblazoned itself in her mind, the floor boss had taken a back seat to Kas' face. She knew that it was tall and lanky, but nothing really else.

"Nothing from the info brokers, I haven't heard of anyone else talk about it. I am as prepared as I am going to get we should just get going. Thank you Nari." Fae turned as Nari told her to lead the way and started walking to the West, towards the Stone Valley. "We ran into it pretty deep into the stone valley, in a cave. I'm hoping we can find it there again." Fae led the way as the field made way to the more rocky and jutting outcrops of stone that made up the stone valley. The path to the cave perfect in her mind.

For the briefest of moments, Nari felt like groaning. They had limited information, limited preparation, and nothing more than a vague encounter a couple years ago to go on. It wasn't the most ideal situation, especially if they were going to face a possible field boss. As if you haven't gone into situations previously without any preparation, prior information, or a good clear sight of what you were facing...

She hated that the voice in her head was right. How many times had she simply walked into a quest, or an encounter, or even a new floor without any prior...well, anything. She had no right to be judging Fae, especially not after the blunders she'd made it the past. Considering the situation, she didn't doubt that there was good reason why Fae had only so much to provide.

"Alright, so. We hit this thing and then we should be good to go, yeah? I mean, we should have this all in the bag no matter what. We've been practicing for two years, right? And this thing is first floor...we got this!" Nari's voice carried a level of enthusiasm and calmness that she wasn't feeling on the inside. She'd long ago learnt that floors only meant so much. Dangers lurked in the darkness of every area, and just because you'd gone higher, didn't always mean lower was safe. Especially in dark places like caves. We'll be fine, we're here together. Doesn't matter what we face... we'll do it together.

Nari's confidence was contagious as she went on about how this was the first floor and that they had this in the bag. Fae could feel herself getting more and more confident about facing the field boss from so long ago 'She's right, this is the first floor, nothing here can be that dangerous and I have had two whole years to get experience. Plus Nari is here nothing can go wrong now.' Fae kept up the mantra in her mind as she walked "Yeah, all we have to do is stick it with the pointy end." Fae smiled at Nari behind her as they neared the cave that she and Kas had been so unlucky as to run into years prior.

"Okay, I think we're here." Fae gestured over to a small cave the inside of which was almost completely hidden in the darkness of night. "Last time when me and Kas were here. . ." Fae came to a very sudden halt as she watched the cave, a scene almost pulled directly from her memories unfolding before her. The tall hunched creature ducking its head out of the cave at the sound of their voice its red eyes almost glowing in the darkness. The creature was easily nine feet tall in its hunched stance its greenish grey skin pulled tight across its body making it easy to see the bones beneath. Its arms were proportioned like an ape long and lanky and in its hand was an oversized club that seemed almost too large for the creature to use with its skinny frame.

Fae felt all of the blood drain from her face, and felt her stomach seize as the creature locked eyes with her its mouth morphing into an open mouthed grin showing off its massive discolored teeth. Fae couldn't even think as she saw the boss, it was even bigger than she remembered, even more awful looking. All Fae could think about was Kas' final words echoing in her head telling her to run as fast as she could, but even if she wanted to she couldn't as she stood there her legs frozen completely in fear

Nari watched as Fae suddenly went pale, her eyes locked on the cave as something began to unfurl itself. Nari felt herself shift as the creature straightened up, the health bar coming to life almost instantly in response to their stumbling upon it. Although the creature itself wasn't anything overly powerful looking - frightening, to be sure - Nari realised belatedly that this was likely the thing that Fae had run into all those years ago. A creature that had embedded itself into her memory in the worst of ways.

She watched, waiting, as Fae rushed forwards, her first attack going wide as the creature moved with a speed that seemed unnatural considering its build. Nari's head tilted in response, and she considered her options. She knew she could fell this thing with a single strike, and yet...This is Fae's daemon to battle. I'm just here to help, if things go awry...but she needs to do this. She needs to end this. Be there for her, but don't win the battle for her.

Content, she settled herself into a ready position, watching for the thing to turn its attention towards Nari, to retaliate in kind should it decide to come her way. She doubted that it would focus on her for now - but if it did, she'd make sure it regretted doing so. The key here would be to ensure she didn't end the thing in a single hit - it wasn't her kill to take. "You've got this Fae, I'm here if you need me...but you've got this!"

It was Nari's words of encouragement that broke the spell that had a hold on Fae. she wasn't the same as she was the last time that she had seen this creature, she was stronger and she had people or person behind her that was even stronger. Sliding the blue blade out of the sheathe on her lower back Fae locked eyes with the creature shoving the fear deep down as she charged at it sword drawn.

Fae was hoping that she would be able to use her speed to her advantage with her wearing the lightest of the armor categories and with this creature's size this should be no problem. Fae was proven wrong as she found herself not able to focus on the offensive but instead having to leap and twirl out of the way of the troll's club and clawed hand. Both were completely evenly matched when it came to speed and neither were able to land a blow as Fae twirled through the air, her cloak billowing out behind her making it look like she had wings as she made her aerial and ground based maneuvers. Fae didn't stop looking for an opening as she slowly learned how the troll attacked.

Nari winced as Fae rushed forward and slipped again, her strike missing the creature as her feet gave out. The girl didn't crash to the ground - thankfully - but Nari could feel the pain of her attempts to strike the thing falling short each time. She doubted that the girl was enjoying this - in fact, it was likely far more painful for Fae, than it was for Nari. Still, she kept her paces away from both, ready to leap in should it be required, but knowing that her position her was pinnacle - if she strode in too early, perhaps Fae would become angered. How many times had Nari missed the first few strikes, only to turn around and obliterate her target in a few follow up strikes.

"Don't wear yourself out too quickly! You've got speed, but so does it! Watch for openings, react to it. Sometimes defensive manoeuvring is the key to success...don't feel rushed. Outlast, outlive. You just need to tire it out, keep it on the edge of your own blade...don't give it the advantage of frustrating you. You're better than it could ever be." Her words were spoken slowly, calmly, as she tried to fight against the rising concern. Sure, there was truth behind it, but it could only help so much if Fae made a mistake. I won't let her. That thing won't get the best of her, no matter how hard it tries. She gave her scythe a quick spin behind her, making sure it was balanced properly and ready. All the while, her eyes scanned the thing, looking for any signs that could be helpful towards their fight.

Fae listened intently to Nari as she focused on dodging all of the attacks that the troll was sending her way being more patient then she was before not trying to make an opening, but instead waiting for one to open for her. Fae was just fast enough to keep dodging the strikes coming at her, but any mistake on her part could lead to her taking a hit from the massive club the troll was holding.

A large swing of the club came horizontally at Fae, and there was no chance that she could dodge backward. Opting for the only real option she had Fae jumped into the air above the club making it miss her by barely an inch. Fae was completely suspended in the air when the troll let out a roar bringing it's off hand swinging through the air at her. Unable to move out of the way Fae desperately brought her forearms up to block the blow wincing as the slam connected and sent her flying through the air feet away from the creature landing solidly against the stone. Fae shook her head as she scrambled to her feet noting how much damage it did even though she wasn't wearing much armor.

Nari winced, not for the first time, as the troll managed to land a strike on Faerie. She considered stepping, considered helping out her friend in an attempt to bring everything to an end - but she also knew that Fae was far from danger at the moment. Instead, Nari stepped to the side, trying to draw the attention of the creature towards her - trying to give Fae some space to work and operate.

"Man, you are absolutely ugly...going to enjoy when you become a collection of shards floating on the air." Nari smiled as she taunted the troll, not looking towards Fae as she tried to draw its attention away from the girl. There was no reason to worry yet, the fight had only just begun in earnest, and so far the combatants were entirely even, although Nari was slightly worried at Fae's lack of success in striking the giant thing. Trust...she's got this. And if not, that's why you're here, isn't it?

Content for the moment to wait and see, she let her scythe rest on the ground behind her - not released, not at the ready, but not swinging towards the target she wanted to put down. This was not her fight, and she needed to respect that - which also meant holding her desires back while the other fought their way through history.

Back on her feet Fae looked at her health bar again surprised to see how little damage she took compared to when she had fought this troll so long ago. Back then one hit had brought her to the brink of death and she had had to flee in order to even survive the encounter, now she had taken a hit way harder than back then and it had barely done anything to her at all.

The fear was still strong in her but a new sense of confidence washed over Fae as Nari stepped in and called out to the troll, her scythe resting behind her. The woman exuded a confidence that Fae couldn't even begin to see herself ever exuding standing there as if the troll that had plagued Fae for the last two years was nothing to her which to be fair was probably true.

It seemed like where the troll excelled in strength and dexterity its intelligence wasn't very high. Hearing a voice coming from its side the troll turned its head towards Nari bringing its attention away from the combat. Taking this opportunity Fae launched herself towards the troll slashing her blade towards its side finding nothing but air as the troll brought its attention back with enough time to dodge the sword art.

Neither landed a hit, the two dancing around one another as Fae continued to try and get past the defences of the heavily skinned troll. In turn, the troll was unable to keep up with Fae's natural speed - far superior to the troll's slow, almost robust movements that left Fae a good distance away before it had even completed its swing.

What little worry Nari had originally, dissipated as she watched the two dance their trial of combat. Fae was clearly at an advantage for speed - so long as she was able to find a way through the thing's armour, she'd be able to take it down without any concern. It was just...

"If you need any help, let me know." She didn't yell, but her voice was loud enough that she was sure Fae would be able to hear her. Whether she responded or not, was another question. Nari knew she was busy just focusing on the fight, trying to stay out of the thing's reach all while landing a strike of her own.

Fae leapt up as the large troll slammed its club down on the ground missing her as she planted her foot on the weapon, using it as a springboard to launch herself towards the beasts head. Bringing the flat of her blade slamming into the side of its skull making it stumble to the side as she landed behind it. The troll was very clearly shocked by the attack as it stood there, brain scrambled for a moment. Fae compared the amount of damage that she did compared to the troll and a wave of confidence rushed through her, this creature may have been super powerful to a completely green character who had nothing, but now, it seemed like she was really on par with it, if not better.

Fae heard Nari speak as the troll stood there stunned from her blow. "I will." Fae paused for a moment before continuing. "You know, I always used to think that this would be more difficult, or even that I would be more scared. This thing killed my friend, I should be more angry." Fae looked at Nari no sign of anger or sadness on her face, just acceptance. Fae didn't have a chance to keep chatting as the troll came to its senses and swung its club towards Fae.

The girl had promised to let her know if there would be any assistance required, meaning that Nari need not do anything at this point. She watched as the two continued to dance around one another, continued to try and pummel and slash one another. The constant dance of conflict, that had become the life of Aincrad, their lives.

Fae managed to land a blow, cutting the creature's health down ever so slightly - a small shimmer crossing its body in response as it seemed to brace itself afterwards. Something about it seemed...different, although Nari couldn't pin her finger on it immediately. Instead, she watched as Fae pressed forward again.

"You've got this, Fae...you were scared, because of what it once was. You're stronger now, stronger than before. You're not the same person you once were... She didn't add the rest, didn't bother saying aloud what she was truly thinking. The other girl didn't need to hear that - not now. For now, she needed to inspire confidence, the fact that Fae could defeat this creature. That was all that mattered, all that was needed.

Fae looked towards Nari a feignt smile on her lips at the praise and encouragement. Nari was right, Fae was different than she was back then, and this time it would be different this time she wasn't in over head and this time she wouldn't be running. Setting her gaze back on the beast before her Fae held her sword out. The wave of confidence bolstering her stance, Fae watched as the troll shook its head snorting as it glared down at the much smaller figure.

Fae kept here eyes locked on the troll, waiting for it to launch an attack. She would have more luck dodging her foe and counter attacking than she would going on an all out assault with her comparatively weak build. Fae didn't have to wait long as the lanky form of the troll rushed out, swinging its massive club with ease trying to flatten her. For what Fae lacked in strength she more than made up for in speed as she stepped lightly out of the way of the large club before leaping up at the troll to bring her sword slashing down across its face. The troll wasn't slow itself by any means though bringing its head rearing back at the last second to avoid the dangerous blow.

Fae looked at her energy as she landed and rolled back away from her spindly opponent, her face growing more worried she was close to being down half of her energy and she had only landed a single hit so far. With their speed being so evenly matched this fight was going to be one of endurance, and Fae wasn't sure who would come out on top in that match. Quickly glancing back up at her old friend all of the worry flooded out of her, she wasn't alone anymore, and while this was her fight, one that she needed to do on her own, she was comforted by the woman standing off to the side watching the fight unfold.

She'd bit her tongue, at some point, watching the fight. The girl had been trying desperately to overpower the troll, and yet, even with all her efforts, Nari had seen the thing grow more and more resistant to the woman's strikes. The girl was holding her own - but she wasn't making any headway with the creature. Not for the first time, Nari considered whether she should simply step in and end the thing, before shutting the thought down entirely. Fae needs to do this herself, and if I step in it will take everything away from that... She still wished there was something she could do, but realised that her only purpose here was to watch and ensure that the troll didn't manage to overpower the poor girl.

"Calm, controlled and watch it for openings! It's slow moving, even if it's powerful! Use that to your advantage!" She shouted as she leaned against her staff, trying to appear outwardly calm even as she bit the corner of her lip in anticipation. She knew that the longer this fight lasted, the worse things would get for Fae - the girl could tire out, even if the troll couldn't. If this goes on too long, I may have to step in...
