[F16;PP] Of Luck and Loss | <<The Swashbuckling Buccaneer>>

Recommended Posts

Nari squinted against the few rays of sunlight that seemed to filter down through the otherwise cloudy overhead that covered the skies. The day seemed to hint towards the possibility of rain, and yet not a drop had fallen since her arrival on the floor. Not that she was complaining, by any means.

"Alright...sad look sailor, where are you...?" Nari muttered to herself as Mio followed her along the dirt path leading through the village. Thatched homes, small businesses and an overall 'fantastical' feel to the village had greeted Nari upon her arrival. Not that it was depressing by any means - there was an almost lively feel in the air that made Nari question the intel she had been given. "Going to end up spending the day searching for this sailor...I can feel it..."

She pulled up her menu, scrolling through before landing on the name she had wanted. A quick press of a few buttons, and she began typing the message.

Ringed Message_on.pngTo: Jomei
From: Nari-Lanreth

Hey Jomei! I've been running around the sixteenth floor looking for this...uh...sad sailor, for this quest...was wondering if you'd be up for helping a lost soul again?

Only if you have the time, that is! Otherwise...I'll manage! Would be good to see you again though.

Let me know!

<<Nari>>

She quickly sent the message before she could change her mind, before glancing around herself again. The quest start was around here somewhere, and she was going to find it - even if it took her all day. She was determined to do at least that. And hopefully he comes...would be nice to not be alone...

Morningstar was becoming tired of his ragged brown replacement cloak. It worked as it was supposed to but he missed his old green one. Nevertheless, he tossed it over his shoulders before teleporting to the sixteenth floor. He had heard tales of a quest, made for swashbucklers like himself, where one could travel the seas in search of treasure and adventure. Finally, the opportunity for Morningstar to live out his pirate dreams had arrived. He stepped off the teleportation pad, eyes attached to the small translucent screen in front of him. The message he had received from his friend had only vague details of the quest. No specifics in terms of rewards, enemies, or even where to go. All that it said was to look for a sailor.

He glanced around, not immediately seeing any sailors. The inhabitants of the town were dwarves, which caught Morningstar by surprise. He had expected the whole floor to be pirates, considering the way the quest had been described to him. Everything felt out of place to him, although he did not suppose it mattered. His eye was caught by the colour violet in the distance. A girl, looking as confused as he imagined he was, tapped away at her menu. Curious, he approached.

"Hi. Any chance you know where I can find a..." Morningstar paused, glancing down at the message, "frantic-looking sailor?"

One leg dangled in the air, gently swinging back and forth. His back leaned against the bark of a tree, sitting about five or six feet up upon one of the branches that would support his weight. One good thing about trees within the safe zone being counted as <<Immortal Objects>> .. the branches couldn't snap from under you if you climbed them. Sometimes, a bench just wouldn't do it when he wanted to just sit and relax; sitting in trees was more exciting.

His fingers found a familiar tune, nothing new.. nothing fancy, just a song he had practiced plenty of times before whenever inspiration for new works just wouldn't come to him. The tips of his digits gently danced along the long neck of the lute, plucking at the strings with his opposite hand to allow the notes to ring out in tandem, creating soft chords. Players who passed by would look up at the ginger in the tree, smiling or talking amongst themselves, but never lingering for too long. He'd prefer not to draw a crowd as he tried to relax.

A gentle breeze passed through the green canopy of leaves above him, swaying in the wind, brushing against one another. Taking a moment, Jomei stopped playing hit instrument and allowed the back of his head to rest against the tree behind him, staring up through the small spaces between the leaves at the blue sky above. A sigh escaped his lips, intermingling with the sound of rustling leaves. A message popping up within his inbox drew his attention back, and shifting his weight upon the tree and dismissing the lute back into his inventory, he would scan over the contents of the digital letter.

Another invitation from Nari to explore another quest, searching for some sailor upon the sixteenth floor. It sounded vaguely familiar, a quest he once was slated to take alongside Hikoru and his ex lover Telrenya.. though they never got around to actually doing it. With a smile on his face, Jomei drafted a response to Nari, keeping it simple by letting her know that he was interested and would meet her there. Luckily, he wasn't too far from the center of town, so he would not need to keep her waiting long.

_____

He felt a bit cliché thinking it, but it had truly been some time since he had been to this floor, remembering the volcano and the mineral deposits that littered the beach all too well. Stepping from the center of the teleportation platform, he caught a glimpse of not just one familiar player, but two. There he saw Nari, whos attention had been caught by none other than Morningstar, a young man Jomei had met at Baldur's estate. "Hey guys" Jomei said with a smile and a wave. "Surprised to see you here." he directed to Morningstar. "Just doing some exploring, or did Nari ask you to tag along with us?"

Nari gave a quick glance at the individual approaching her, realising quickly that it was someone she didn't recognise, but was in fact another player. She placed a small smile on her face, hoping to appear welcoming - at least as welcoming as she could appear, all things considered. The question about the sailor caused her right eyebrow to raise ever so slightly in response, but before she could answer another voice had called out.

"Hey Jomei! Uh...no, no we're just meeting for the first time...you two know each other?" Her gaze passed back and forth between the ginger and the newcomer, a look of curiosity in her eyes. Jomei obviously knew the player, and seemed relaxed enough, which was more than enough for Nari. "I was actually looking for the same thing...when uhm...sorry I didn't get your name. I'm Nari. Nari-Lanreth."

She held out a hand, the palm downwards in an impression of an almost lady-like attempt of a greeting. She waited, just long enough for the other player to respond, before continuing her trail of thought. "Looks like we were both looking for the same thing...some frantic looking sailor who is supposed to be the start of this quest. Wouldn't happen to know anything about its location, would you Jomei?"

She cast a gaze at the ginger, hoping that he would have some sort of direction. Otherwise they'd be spending the next few minutes rushing all over the large village in search of an NPC that might not even be here.

Morningstar thought recognized the red-haired man from a party he had attended not long ago, the girl confirming this by saying his name. He wondered if she had also been there. Perhaps they had even walked by each other without noticing. He did not find it too surprising that the two were friends. Everyone seemed to know everyone by this point, aside from him of course.

"Morningstar. It's nice to meet you, Nari," he said, meeting her hand.

He glanced around at the villagers once more, listening to the woman speak to Jomei. While he did not voice his thoughts about the matter, he was also hoping that they could avoid wandering the village without a clue as to where they should look for the sailor.

"Admittedly, I haven't taken much time to look, but I don't think the NPC is that way," Morningstar said, pointing behind himself, "is there a harbor nearby, maybe?"

So it was chance that the two had met here today, even more of a coincidence, Morningstar was looking for the same quest NPC as they were. Jomei nodded his head in response to Nari's question, "Yeah. I also met him at Baldur's. So guess I've known both of you for just as long." he added with a kind smile. After the two had formally introduced each other, it was back to the matter at hand; finding this NPC

Jomei rubbed at the nape of his neck sheepishly when Nari asked if he had any idea where this frantic sailor may be. "Honestly, I've never finished this quest. I was supposed to do it awhile ago with my.. well.. my ex. We got the information from my info broker friend and just, never got around to it." However, Morningstar made a good point that the group should check out any larger bodies of water nearby. "A good place to start." Jomei said with a nod. "Where there's a harbor, there's ships.. and where there's ships, there have to be sailors."

As luck had it, following some signs and the occasional direction from an NPC, the group found the harbor set just behind a group of trees, their low hanging branches filled with leaves blocking their view of the large body of water. A boardwalk like a maze built just above the surface of the water, with different paths leading to small cottages built up on planks to keep them out of harms way of a rising tide. Crates and barrels littered the thin walkways, which would physically only allow one way traffic. That would be ideal, of course, but sailors and workers moving shipments in each direction was creating all sorts of chaos. At the edge of the walkway of planks, three long docks pushed out towards the open waters, medium sized sailing vessels tied down, gently bobbing with the motion of the water.

The center dock, however, was missing a ship. The only thing remaining on the walkway - save for a couple of barrels and crates - a short, rotund man who quickly paced back and forth, eyes locked to the deeper waters ahead.

Nari had been nodding along with what Jomei had stated, her smile slowly shifting to a frown, before he mentioned his ex. Almost immediately, her eyes focused on the ginger, a sly smile crossing his face. Nagging questions left her lips, almost immediately overturned as she realised that it was neither the time nor the place. "Your ex? As in...still living, ex? As in you got dumped? As in...we'll circle back to this post-sailor-found-situation."

Before she could get anything further out, Jomei was leading the way towards the docks. Nari had to admit that she was once more impressed with his natural leadership qualities - the way he simply took control, effortlessly and without argument. It was something she had aspired to have, something she wished she could do. Jealousy is unbecoming. Still, she admired Jomei for it.

The docks were, in a word, disappointing. Clearly designed as a harbour, but tiny and unimpressive compared to some of the other locations available in Aincrad. Not that Nari was complaining - she had already spotted the loner sitting on a barrel that she hoped would be their NPC

"Come on, I think that's who we need!" She grabbed the two men's hands, before pulling them towards the dock in a rushed pace. She stopped a few steps away from the NPC, before releasing the hands of the other two, and waving at the solemn looking sailor. "Hey there...was hoping you could maybe help us with...erm...some pirate-related things?"

The man turned to face the three, before launching into a frantic related script, that Nari could only imagine someone had written in the hopes of realism. It fell a little bit short, but was otherwise impressive. Enough so, that for a single second she felt herself connecting with the NPC, wanting to help him.

"I...think we could lend a hand, right boys?" She turned and gave a cheeky grin at the other two, as if daring them to back out now.

Morningstar stumbled forward, his body being pulled by Nari. She had become comfortable with him quite quickly and it surprised him. The blonde knew that they had reached their destination when she eventually let go of him. The raggedy old sailor sat upon a crate, glancing over at the trio. Nari's voice seemed to pull his attention and almost immediately, the NPC began spouting dialogue at them. The sailor told a short tale of a malevolent pirate named Greybeard. It was a change of pace for Morningstar, who spent ninety-seven percent of his time on land.

"I mean, I've always wanted to go on a pirate adventure," Morningstar said.

Hearing this, the sailor continued his speech, turning eastward and pointing across the water. The details of the quest were further disclosed and a new waypoint appeared on their maps. He swished his hand, pulling up his menu. A few taps later, he was inside his inventory, eyes squinting as he decided what he would need to bring. Realizing that he was without a pirate hat, his brows furrowed. He had come unprepared, as per usual.

A golden blade appeared, slung over his back. Their vessel was not much; the sailor's uncle's rowboat was all they were offered. Morningstar was sure they would manage, however, and carefully stepped inside the boat. It rocked a bit as he climbed in but a thick rope stopped it from straying too far from the dock. The waves appeared calm from his uneducated perspective. He had never actually been on a boat—not one like that, anyway.

"Shall we?" Morningstar asked.

Jomei narrowed his gaze at Nari, who seemed a bit fixated on the 'ex' part of his statement. "It was mostly a mutual thing.. did I not mention I was engaged? .. Right, another time." Now wasn't the time to dwell over the past. They had a frantic sailor to find amongst this small, yet still bustling, framework of a harbor. Amongst all the moving parts, eagle-eyed Nari was able to point out a man, standing out on an empty dock, their movements akin to someone not having a good time. And before they knew it, Morningstar and Jomei were fumbling after Nari, who had grabbed their hands and dragged them down the hill towards the docks. They came to a halt at the end of the boardwalk, a stone's throw away from the pacing seaman.( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°

Catching their attention, the sailor turned in the players direction, a face hinting at notes of stress, despair, and a dash of hope that these three adventurers could help him out. Jomei stood listening to them talk about the missing ship, and the suspected pirate activity, nodding along. "I think we should be able to get that ship back." Jomei agreed with a confident smirk.

Drawing their attention to the small rowboat, Jomei looked at the sailor. "Since you think you might know where they took your ship, will you be taking us there?" Rowboats seemed easy enough to pilot.. but knowing exactly where to go was the problem. With a nod, the sailor joined them in the small boat, sitting in the front and taking an oar in each hand. "Alright, so whats the plan?"

Nari waited for Jomei and Morningstar to enter the small craft, before taking a leap after them - giggling to herself as the ship rocked heavily, and the sailor cried out in alarm at the sudden shifting. "Well, so much for being able to take a swim...ah well, probably for the best. We wouldn't want to show up to fight entirely soaked and waterlogged, I guess. Sailor! Heave to! Or...whatever the command is for let's go..."

She'd never been in anything bigger than a canoe in her life, and as the boat pushed off into the waters, Nari found herself gripping the seat beneath her, her fingers turning white at the pressure she was putting on the piece of wood. Discomfort wouldn't even begin to describe the feeling as they moved out over the water. She kept her gaze straight ahead, eyes locked on the horizon as she tried not think about the small planks of wood between her and whatever was beneath them.

"Hey...I see a ship over there!" She called out as she spotted the massive thing coming into sight, as they turned around an edge of land. The ship seemed to almost be waiting for them - an ominous sign that they were likely heading for it. For the first time since entering the small craft, she turned to look at her companions, smiling viciously. "Ready for this...?"

A quick couple of taps of her menu, and her scythe was in her left hand - the right gripping the gunnel of the craft in the same death grip she'd had on the seat. Her gaze locked on the ship, however the discomfort had quelled ever so slightly as she anticipated the coming fight, ready to take down the entire ship by herself should she need to do so.

"Let's do this..." She muttered to herself, watching as they drew closer and closer to the ship, the sound of paddling loud against the otherwise quiet of the water they crossed.

  • 3 months later...

The party reached the ship without trouble.

First to climb aboard and enter the fight was Morningstar, clad in his tired old cloak. With a leap between boats, he found himself gripping a weathered rope ladder with both hands. He ascended, placing one hand on his blade handle when he reached the top. Meteor glowed bright gold as it slid from its scabbard and tasted the salty breeze. His hood flew off, revealing a wide grin and messy hair. He hurdled the edge of the ship, eyes eagerly scanning its layout. Four deckhands stood idly, cutlasses in hand. Trusting those who would come behind him, he rushed in before he was noticed by the pirates. A glorious trail followed the tip of his sword art, arcing as he slashed through three-quarters of the group.

The deck was slippery in some spots and Morningstar found himself sliding further than he had expected. By the time he was able to stop himself, he had nearly reached the opposite edge of the ship.

His entrance had not been powerful enough to finish off the four pirates in one go, not to mention he had failed to hit the one furthest from him. Morningstar raised his sword defensively, prepared to regroup with his party.

"I see it." his response was short, and hushed. He didn't want the sound of his voice traveling over the surface of the water, alerting the pirates. At this distance, they really didn't have anything to defend themselves, and he wasn't sure if the sailing vessel had any sort of ranged weaponry they needed to worry about. Luckily enough for them, their guide knew the ins and outs of this ship, including its blind spots. Cautiously, he sailor brought their small boat alongside the ship, making sure not to make any loud splashes as the oars broke the surface of the water.

Morningstar was the first to board the larger ship, making use of a rope ladder off the side of the deck. Jomei followed shortly after, making sure to not allow Morningstar to go at these pirates alone. Although, his first strike managed to knock out more than half of all four of the deckhands' health points, so he knew the blonde was definitely capable. If only it was these four that they would have to deal with.. but he knew they wouldn't have it that easily.

Vaulting over the side railing of the ship, Jomei would draw his rapier and quickly move to follow behind Morningstar. Raising his rapier to a vertical position in front of his face, his blade would ignite in a slight golden light as the sword art activated. Spots of the gold suddenly turned black with shadow, as it intertwined with the energy of his attack. Moving at high speeds, Jomei blinked between the four pirates, his blade plunging into each one as he appeared before them. Only a single pirate was left standing after he finished with his assault.. for now at least. A sharp whistle, and his brown, owl companion would strike down from the cross beams of the mast, digging her talons deep into the chest of the single man left standing. "Nari! Be at the ready for whatever comes next!"

Jomei and Morningstar had jumped into the fight almost immediately - both unleashing with a set of skills that wiped away any threat before them. Nari barely had a moment to consider which target to focus on, before the individuals were little more than shards upon the wind, leaving the trio facing off against an empty deck for a breath. "Well...well done, guys. We really showed them."

Her voice carried none of its normal excitement, her eyes tracing the area that the figures had been just moments ago. Well, I was super useful there...I'm betting they're glad I came along. Shrugging off the self-doubt, she sighed and stepped forwards. At the same time, the door that led below deck opened, a pair of deckhands advancing, quickly followed by a man and woman that somehow seemed more important. It's the aura they give off. Like they're in control of the situation, maybe? Nari couldn't say for sure if that was the case, but it was the feeling she had when she looked at the pair.

"Alright...my turn!" She launched herself towards the group, letting her scythe slash through the air ahead of her, attempting to cut through all four of them and bring their advance to a stop before they could fully emerge onto the deck.

The abrupt entrance from the party had gathered a crowd. It seemed the four lesser pirates were only the beginning. Now, rising from below deck, two pirates who looked far more dangerous than the rest appeared with a pair of deckhands following close behind. Nari took the lead this time, barreling towards the pirates alongside the flashy scythe she carried and dealing significant damage to the deckhands and boatswains. Although three were stunned, the fourth remained unafflicted. Jessamine, catching Nari off guard, tossed a not-so-gentle stab in her direction, barely piercing her.

Swooping to her rescue, Morningstar reactivated his sword art. It hummed as he sped forwards, disposing of the already near-defeated deckhands. With eagle-like precision, he curved his blade and landed a critical hit to Boatswain Jessamine, pushing her away from Nari and stunning her momentarily.

"Nice damage," Morningstar said, awaiting retaliation from their opponents.

Was this the extent of the pirates' strength? Perhaps it was the size of his party but it felt too easy to the blonde. Jessamine's short-lived hit on Nari was a minimal blow, to say the least, while their own had been devastating attacks. Morningstar stepped out of the way, allowing room for Jomei to enter the fight.

Without giving them much of a second to breathe, another group of pirate burst out from below the deck of the ship. Two more, simple looking pirates, followed by a man and woman that seemed to hold a bit of importance on the ship. "Now things are looking interesting." the ginger said with a smirk as he huffed a breath of air. Readying his blade, he watched as Nari and Morningstar quickly moved in to intercept. Easily, the two deckhands vanished into a flash of light, while the two boatswains managed to hold their ground against the assault. The female managed to drive their blade into Nari, dealing a bit of damage to their purple haired companion. Morningstar managed to step in, giving Nari some cover while also getting a hit on the other combatant, he who seemed a bit more nimble and agile armed with a deadly looking dagger.

That would be the one Jomei would take on.

Matching the rouge-like pirate's speed, Jomei rushed forward and clashed blades with the dagger wielder. The ginger's speed made up for the length difference between his rapier and the pirate, which under normal circumstances, he would be at a disadvantage. With some quick thinking and parrying strikes, Jomei managed to open up the pirate to a devastating attack. His rapier hummed as it ignited in a golden-white flame of holy energy. As the pirate recovered and retreated backwards, Jomei followed up with an advancing step, the tip of his blade colliding with the chest of the pirate with a booming strike.

  • 3 weeks later...

The other two had managed to slash through the small banditry that had arrived alongside the more dangerous enemies - clearing the way for Nari and the others to really focus on ending the fight. At least...it should be easy enough to end this fight. She danced around to the side of the two NPCs that had frozen in place - both feeling the effects of the stun that had caught their forms. She had no desire to take a risk and rush in, knowing that there was no immediate need to overwhelm them.

She glanced towards Jomei and Morningstar, making sure that the two of them were standing and unharmed, before diving into the fight once more. Her scythe whipped around her, brought up in a wide arc as she looked to finish off the already injured individual, knowing that she could at least clear the way a bit for the other two. "Focus on the woman, I got this guy!"

She didn't look back as she called out, trusting the other two to simple act as they needed to - whether they listened to her or not. It's not like I'm in command here or anything...so it's up to them to do what they want.

Morningstar nodded to the woman and left her to handle Amir. He advanced, his blade enveloped in green rather than gold as he activated another sword art. The dazed boatswain was slow to retaliate against the blonde's upward slash. Her left arm was destroyed upon impact with the ground, leaving behind a mess of blue pixels. Next, he aimed for her neck; a killing blow. The effects of the missing arm were clear to him and although she struggled to move out of the way, she managed to duck beneath the blade's edge and escape to a safer distance.

He thought about finishing the job with another attack. It was greedy but he thought he could weave in another quick sword art and drop her health bar to zero. Instead, he made eye contact with Jomei, silently offering him the last hit. He took this chance to catch his breath.

The fight was going rather smoothly. Smoother than he had anticipated. As Nari swapped her attention from the female Boatswain to the other, Jomei did the same, shifting his attention from the one named Amir to Jessamine. Morninstar, on the other hand, continued with an AoE assault, cutting down the health bar of any and all of the pirates who remained. Together, they made quick work of the crew, leaving Jessamine, wounded and alone, but not backing down.

Backing off from his assault, Jomei was offered the final hit, the killing blow. It didn't offer him any pleasure, especially being these were human looking enemies, rather than the typical fantasy-style monster.. or even someone with a helmet to mask their expression. However, he could look into this pirate's eyes, read the expression on their face.. unchanging as it may be depending on their situation. Allowing an extra beat to pass, Jessamine yelled out and took a step forward to swing at Jomei, but not a moment later, the front edge of his rapier had pierced through her abdomen, stopping her in her tracks. The hardened expression dropped, eyes widening before relaxing, and the whole form of the pirate shattered before him.

In their place three weapons clattered onto the wooden deck of the ship. Not the typical loot drop, he thought to himself. Especially given that they closely resembled the weapons of the three players; a polearm, a great sword, and a rapier. Jomei lowered himself to a knee to pick up the strange rapier. The blade was a bit thicker than a normal saber, made of a dull green and covered with barnacles towards the handguard, which represented a five point starfish with its arms forming and umbrella over his hand. "Interesting... Says its a temporary weapon. Maybe we get something extra if we use these?" He looked over the weapon as he stood, frowning slightly. "Its stats conflict with my own.. so I lose more than I gain.." turning to look at the others, he'd shrug his shoulders, "But shouldn't adhere me too much, if you guys want to give it a shot."

Nari breathed a small sigh of relief as the fight came to its conclusion. She'd been certain that Jomei wouldn't hesitate, would finish off the woman - although, for the briefest of seconds it had looked as though the ginger would hold back on their assault, as if they had considered another choice. Nari considered saying something, but was distracted by the weapons that had appeared at their feet - a virtual collection of various tools, all of which resembled the weapons that the trio were already wielding.

Before either of the others could reach, Jomei had already reached down and collected the piece that resembled his rapier - a variety of barnacles and other sea-like encrustations decorating the weapon's otherwise decent structure. His sneer, in response to the lesser weapon, made Nari pause in her reach towards the piece. Is it really that much of a downgrade? Are these things just a hindrance, meant to draw in unsuspecting players, only to leave them handicapped? She struggled with the thought, before shrugging internally. If it becomes a problem, you can always just switch it out mid-fight.

"Let's...plan to cover each other, if these things end up being detrimental. Two of us block, while the other swaps their weapon quickly...yeah?" She wasn't sure if it was necessary, but she felt that bringing the idea up would be worthwhile in the end. A plan, that they could implement on the go, if they knew that it existed.

A quick glance down at the weapon confirmed a similar situation for Nari, and she felt herself wince slightly. "Here's hoping that whatever this thing offers, is a better hand than what I had before..."

With that, the fight was over. Jomei's final strike to Boatswain Jessamine left them a reward—or perhaps, a handicap. Three weapons lay ahead of them on the deck, idle. Jomei snatched up the rapier, and Nari chose the scythe. His two-handed straight sword was left over and he followed their lead by lifting it from the ground. The hilt was a shade of teal and adorned with barnacles on the portions not meant to be held. It was a fair bit lighter than Meteor and lacked the paralysis enhancement he was used to, instead replaced with an extra slot of damage. It would do the trick.

It appeared that his was the only weapon that was about equal to what he normally wielded. Nari and Jomei were taking a loss by equipping their respective weapons; he hoped it would not change the outcome of the battle ahead.

"At least they look kinda cool, right?" Morningstar joked.

He agreed to Nari's strategy for weapon swapping, in the event that these new options proved disadvantageous. From below deck, where the boatswains had previously emerged, the blonde could hear the light rumble of footsteps climbing stairs. A pirate, far more fearsome than the rest, climbed to the top, announcing himself as Burlock, The Quartermaster.

Meteor disappeared, returning to Morningstar's inventory. He lifted Luck of the Sea, readying himself for their last fight.
