[SP-F2] Breaking the Unbreakable

Recommended Posts

Edwyn had heard tell that, although the first floor boss had been cleared and the second floor was now open for players, there was no way to access the new dungeon on the second floor. It seemed that a boulder had somehow fallen directly over the entrance and blocked it completely. There was a rumor going around that it was impossible to even get into the dungeon, that tons of players had tried and failed to break the stone. Some people were even saying the Kayaba had lied to them all, that there was no way past the second floor and there was no way to clear the game. But one thing was for certain, this obstacle was severely hurting the moral of the players in SAO. In the time that this news had been leaked, suicide rates had sky-rocketed. Someone had to put a stop to it, someone had to find a way to break through that boulder and grant access to the dungeon behind.

Even though Edwyn didn't think that he was any better than any of the other players that had tried to break through the boulder and failed, he felt that it couldn't hurt to try, and really that it was everyone's duty to try, because you never knew what you were capable of until it happened. He headed right for the second floor and as soon as he got there he went straight towards the dungeon, not even bothering to take the time to hunt or rest. When he got to the city closest to the dungeon he bought a room at the inn and took a load off, deciding to rest up a little bit before trying to destroy the boulder.

After eating a delicious meal and getting a good night's sleep, Edwyn figured it was time to check out the boulder that was blocking the entrance to the dungeon. He headed out of town around mid morning, making his way slowly toward the dungeon's entrance. There was no need to rush, he figured, because the boulder wasn't going anywhere, and if someone else managed to destroy it before he got there, well then he wasn't needed anyway.

When Edwyn reached the dungeon and saw the boulder blocking the entrance, he wasn't surprised that no one had been able to break it, the thing was huge! He looked at the massive rock and wondered exactly what he was going to be able to do, that hundreds of other players had failed at doing. This task was starting to look more and more impossible by the second. But there was nothing for it, nothing risked, nothing gained he thought. Time to figure out what I'm up against.

Edwyn walked up to the huge boulder and began peering at it closely, looking for any sign of weakness, cracks or fissures or the like. He slowly circled the rock, looking closely at every inch. When he reached the other side, he began making his way back, going over once again what he had already scanned. Attempting to find the weakest point of the rock. After he reached the opposite side, he half jumped, half climbed to the top and began the process over. Searching for a weak point, somewhere he could begin his attempt to destroy the boulder.

Edwyn repeated this process for several days without any success, and with each mounting failure he became more and more frustrated; but he was determined not to lose hope, because in order to progress and clear the game, this rock had to be broken; some how, some way, he would do it. Eventually, after a few days, he gave up looking for a natural weakness and decided to try and create his own. Edwyn bought a heavy chisel and hammer from a vendor on his fifth day attempting to break the rock, and decided to slowly chip away at one certain point until he could make a crack. He was hoping against hope that this would somehow work, when all other attempts had failed.

He placed the chisel against the rock and swung with the hammer, praying that his would work. He had to admit that he was slightly amazed when a small piece of the rock chipped away instead of the chisel breaking. So he struck with the hammer again, and again a piece of the rock chipped away, but on the third swing not only the chisel, but also the hammer broke. So the next day he brought two hammers and two chisels, but the same thing happened to both sets. This was going to get very expensive, very quickly, he needed to figure out a different way to do this.
