  1. The rain hammered the soil loudly muffling the knocks Elise had made against the door. Plus the shrilling metal sounds coming from inside, she doubted that occupants inside heard anything. True, the blacksmith inside continued his work without bother. She glanced at the grey clouds. It's too late to find another place to take refugee. Probably staying below the eave until the sky has cleared would do.

The sheer cold of the night gust prickled her skin like needles piercing a pin cushion. She shivered as the numbing chill crept upon her. She blamed it partly on her clothes. Light Satin Dress, one-of-a-kind custom vanity which was given to her before she broke contact with Earth,  was a symbol of the elegance and royal standing of Chevalier family. In other words, an attire courtesy of flamboyant luxury. Elise would love to maintain her trademark vanity as sign of status and remembrance of her life IRL. Although from esthetics point of view it was second to none, sometimes she found it annoying because the dress has no functionality whatsoever. Couldn't shield her from the weather, mobs' attacks, nor from any unwanted attention when she just want to be left alone. 'Tomorrow, I shall go to higher floors to see if I can get another clothes to alternate with this dress on occasions, or armors,' She was facing the rain when someone talked inside the shop- a female voice.

"Dear, why don't you stop working for a second and open the door? A piece of armor can wait, but not a customer standing in front of our shop. It's pouring outside." Another voice, this time a male's, grumpy and cantankerous answered, "Told you, it can't be. No customers would be her at this hour and weather. If there are any, probably just someone seeking a place to spend the night or simply taking shelter from the rain..." How did he know? "We don't provide those kinds of service. You must have misheard. Even if there are, they must be gone now" Once again she gave the door a clear knocking to notify her presence. Silence. Then someone opened the door, temporary blinding her with sudden outrage of lights in contrast with the dawn's dark miasma.

  2. Water droplets were falling from the grey clouds, seizing the orange skies from their prior tangerine glory. As the rain impaled the soil a girl stood facing raindrops barrier that separated her from the rain. Her eyes darted from the sky to a tall building some distance away. "A weather forecast would be handy in situations like this," she murmured below an eave she's talking shelter below. "Now I can't go back to the inn without getting drenched"

Elise was en route to her inn to take a rest for the day when the rain started pouring. She stared at the sky. The colors got so dull, emphasizing the threat of night's creeping darkness. Would she stuck here until the dusk passed and the night reigned? Her inn was still a long way to go and this rain wasn't likely to go down soon. She shivered. 'It's cold...' She should take shelter in a building somewhere. Elise looked around. She could take refugee in a NPC's house but it would be rude to knock and ask for the favor. She was searching around for an alternative when she saw a shop on the other side of the street. Perfect. She couldn't see the shop's sign clearly because of the rain but usually a shop accepts all potential customers, although there are exceptions like her Performer mentor. Hopefully the shop's NPC would be an unsuspecting one so she could take shelter while feigning interest in the goods.

The girl took a deep breath. Then she crossed the street quickly with her hands covering her head. Finally, she's in front of the shop <>. From outside, she heard a clanging sound. A blacksmith? All the better. Her clothes are a bit wet. Whatever, they'll dry off by themselves inside if she can get near the coals.

  3. Elise also had heard the sound of movement from the left path. "More mobs on track most likely means we're on the right path to the treasure the maze's guarding- like knights on castles protecting the king, so do monsters on dungeons protecting their treasure" she sharpened her hearing sense and caught.. chirping noises? "Thus leading us to our target. Where the treasure resides be where the Minotaur guards" She had a bad feeling and Crozeph's warning only made it worse. "Don't say anything else. I won't grasp, I swear-" her voice trailed off as she peeked from the corner. And there it was, a Giant Mantis. It looks so grotesque with body that big. They were supposed to go past that? Luckily in this world anything that dies disappear in form of data shards. She couldn't imagine slicing the intestines out of the mantis. The insect's appearance was enough to make her want to take another route, if she didn't believe in her assumption of this path being the right one. If she couldn't kill a single Mantis how would she kill the Minotaur? Elise gulped her fears and turned to her party members asking in silence what to do.

Reu answered that they could try going around the mantis. "It's true that avoiding battle sounds like the best way, but we'll be forced to fight if that mutant insect ever get on our path" The mob wasn't exactly on their path but sneaking on it would be quite hard. She came up with a brilliant resolution from her reckless attitude. "If we can't get past it, then get it out of the way" the killer princess unsheathed Thorny Rose. If they're to fight the Giant Mantis she should be prepared "Ladies first?" she asked for their permission to engage, or their decision to sneak around the creature. Elise's fingers delicately stroked the wide part of the rapier. It will be their first battle. This sword better live up to its stat gains.

  4. Repertoire

Located in Floor 2, the shop building isn't very different from the others of its kind. The only thing that ensures customer that particular building is the newly opened shop, Repertoire, is the sound of violin that enraptures the listeners' senses and ensnares people into wonder, which was left venturing the air with all its majesty from the opened dark ebony door.

Inside the place emanates air of splendor European touch. Nostalgia design of old decorates the stone room with smooth stone counter, few wooden shelves, a square rug, and a lantern to illuminate the place with pureness of the light. When outside the sun burns with all its might or the rain pours with all its power the place guarantees comfort for customers and travelers alike, be they green or orange as refugees from unforgiving outside world.

The sound of creaking wood intrigues the serene silence as a silver haired girl was playing her trusted violin with eyes closed as if in another dimension of hers. This is her dominion, her personal realm of melodies. With few final strokes of the bow the girl ended her melodic reverie, opened her blue eyes and five words escaped her lips

    "How may I help you?"

Elise's eyes scanned through the notes. It was considerably more difficult. This one's going to cost her a few tries. If only she could do another miracle like earlier. "It wasn't luck." Sonata laid her cheek on her fist. Can she read mind or something? "It was you who made it happen. Luck can only get you so far, the rest are skills and hardwork. With you now, this piece shall be a piece of cake" she closed her eyes, acting as a cue for Elise to start playing. Elise fixed her chin rest position and tightened the strings.

She didn't play right away. She hummed the notes two times to get the gist. Then she confidently closed her eyes. With thismshe should be able to get the feel more accurately. Melodies flowed from the instrument, creating a jovial tune that was powerful and cheerful resonated in her heart. She kept it a bit jumpy in some parts and smoothen it in the others. Finally she ended her performance with a quick, strong stroke pitching a high note to the ceilings. Sonata didn't react. Would she instruct her to start again? Unexpectedly she applauded. "What a perfect song! Even I was impressed by how quickly and well you played the song. It's one of my most difficult études you see. But I was correct about how can you play anything once you get the hang of the basics right?" They high-fived.

"Congratulations! You've become a decent Performer now. What's more, this shop shall be yours for the taking. I felt confident leaving this place in the right hands. Take care of this shop and Stradivarius for me, 'kay?" she was starting to shimmer. "Come to think of it, I don't know your name yet. What kind of teacher doesn't know their student's name?" she became more and more unsolid. "It's Ad.. No, Elise" she firmly replied. "Elise.. As in Für Elise?" Elise nodded. "You too, have a taste in naming yourself" Elise was sure she had heard a giggle right before Sonata dissolved. She was left dumbfounded for awhile. She is a Performer now. Sonata's gone, so she's on her own. She looked at the room. It was smooth and kept clean, so there wasn't much to do. Except... "If I want to open a shop, I better put on counters and the other things. Sonata didn't seem to have them.." she stared at the air where the NPC disappeared "Geez, just how reclusive can you be?"

Before she played it again, she asked Sonata "How.. can I play the music sheet correctly? I'm not the writer. I can't measure the softness, power, tiny intervals, and every little detail, if you want me to do so. Playing a flawless piece of music is impossible for me" Sonata clamped her hands together. She didn't open her eyes to look at her student. She just said vaguely, "Read the notes on the paper. Don't just see, read them and let the melodies echo in your head. Think about how it should be played to bring its full potential, the feelings. Not only to make you or the audience feel alive, but make the instrument" she gestured at Stradivarius "alive as well. You know what I mean?"

Elise almost replied with another 'how' question when she got a flashback of Symphony's last words. 'Don't follow your eyes, miss. I thought you like music?' She closed her eyes and felt the three bars she had played. When she played it it sounded smooth and flexible but when she let it echoed in her mind- it was rigid and rough. The foundation was too frail for the melodies to stood on. She hummed them fast and quietly. With eyes closed Elise's world turned dark. Here she could feel every note playing more beautifully than she had ever played. She opened her eyes again. Without saying anything she played the music sheet from the start to the end. The bow traveled effortlessly near the bridge. Her fingers measured the coordination and pressure of every touch. When she finished she looked at Sonata with satisfied expression. The NPC smiled. "A perfect piece. Well done, girl! You mastered it faster than Symphony, and even faster than me. It's not your first time playing a violin, is it?" Elise wiped a drop of sweat with her back of the hand. "No. Actually I have learnt playing violin for ten years. But it seem what I've got here worth even more. I feel comfortable with you as my teacher" she smiled back. "You flatter me. But don't let me down with the next sheet. Once you played it right you're good to go as a Performer" she took the music sheet Elise had played and gave another sheet. It looks more difficult than the first.

"It was supposed to be played in mezzo-forte, not mezzo-piano! Moderately soft, not moderately loud as you played" Sonata waved her hand.

Not mp but mf? Elise couldn't possibly make a mistake like that. She checked the music sheet. There it was. The mf was written in uneven italic fonts it looks like a mp in the first glance. "You didn't write it clearly" Elise accused. "You didn't read it clearly" Sonata justified herself. This NPC is very similar to her. Sometimes she likes Sonata, sometimes she's annoyed with her doppelgänger. She knew Sonata is stubborn, if not more stubborn than her, and decided to play again. She was anxious that she would make another mistake. And true, she did. A glance at Sonata's expression told her what the NPC thought of the piece. "I'll redo it!" she said before Sonata could criticize her.

"What's wrong with my earlier performances?" Elise protested. Sonata thought for awhile "The starting notes weren't linked to each other as they were supposed to, you have to start softly but firmly. Your performances were like a rope with loose ends" Sonata closed her eyes again closing Elise's window for more complaints. A rope with loose ends.. Elise's spirit sunk. In real life every time she played she always reaped praises but in front of the maestro she's nothing. "Girl, there's no need to be disheartened. Even I need a full day to master five études. Symphony, my brother you met, took a day just to learn one. Our parents even wondered if he wasn't my actual brother because his skills are far below mine" They both giggled. "Okay, I will try again" she mustn't let down the person who cheered her up."That's the spirit of a Performer!" Sonata crossed her fingers. "Best of luck. Now, try again" she said a bit kindlier. Elise played the music again. She started with a firm stroke with the bow. She played three bars before Sonata's abrupt comment, "Are you sure you've read it correctly?"

Elise opened her eyes in disbelief. "What?" Sonata cocked her head in distaste as if she had just heard a screeching sound of nails against a blackboard. "You heard me. Start over" she ordered. Was her performance really that bad? She took a deep breath. Perhaps she messed a note? Her eyes followed every single note. Her trained heart beat like a metronome adjusting to the music. She had to ensure this time she plays a perfect piece that no one can complain about it. Sonata impatiently snapped her fingers to halt Elise's performance. "Are you blind? Read the music sheets correctly!" Elise's jaw dropped "What do you mean? I've done as exactly as what was written in this music sheet" "That means as I said. Start over" she repeated harshly.

"Are you serious?" Elise moaned. "Do I look like I'm joking?" Sonata shot back. Okay, maybe too strict.

Loud knocking came from the front door. Elise didn't wait for an answer before going in. Sonata was there with a violin on her lap. "Hello, girl. Have you brought what I asked?" Elise opened her Inventory and gave her the sheets and a string. "Good! Now, here. Read these," she gave Elise two of the sheets and laid the rest on a table "and play them. Check them out." she waited while replacing a broken string with the one Elise brought.

Elise analyzed them sheets by sheets "These music sheets.. Études?" Elise inquired. Sonata nodded in satisfaction. "Composed personally by me. Consider yourself lucky you have a chance to see, even play some of them". "Probably not just me who shall have the chances. You dropped more than five sheets when you was being pursued by the mobs, didn't you?" Elise smiled mischievously at her mentor. The NPC's cheeks were flustered. "Sh- Shut up! I was panicked, okay? And more importantly!" she raised her voice to change the topic "As you said, these are études, compositions designed to increase one's musical capabilities. These music sheets are essential for a Performer to develop their skills. I designed them to be difficult to play, but once you mastered at least two of them it shouldn't be hard for you to play any pieces you want. So," she plopped herself back in her rocking chair "entertain me".

Elise picked Sonata's violin. Her repair was done already? That was quick. The violin was made from sturdy wood and carefully kept in best condition (except one of the strings). On its side Elise noticed a word carved elegantly in italics. "Stradivarius.." she eyed the girl in a rocking chair "You have a taste in naming your instrument". "Don't say anything else. Play" Sonata said with her eyes closed. Seconds ago she was embarrassed and now she got a solemn face to rate Elise's performance. She's a strict and good mentor, Elise felt sure that she could do well with her future profession being taught by such NPC. Elise put her chin on Stradivarius' chin rest. Then she played one music sheet. As expected of one of Sonata's creations. A soft but sad music was heard from the violin. She could feel it in just by playing the first bar... "Stop! Stop!" Sonata clapped impatiently. "It's not like that. Start again!"

She was half-right. There was a Giant Stone Spider in the area. And she's right about it protecting a Music Sheet as well. 'This is going to be a tough fight..' she hid behind a rock, preparing to attack when the giant mob expect it the least. She was going to run and go berserk when her toes made a crumpling sound against a paper she didn't notice. She grabbed it and was going to throw it away when she noticed the paper had music notes and Sonata's mark. It seems Sonata had lost more than five papers here. She sat and relaxed her back against the rock. "Great. With this I don't have to fight the monstrous spider. And it saved me the chores of turning every single paper here" She stayed that way for a minute before she jolted. "This isn't done yet! Sonata's waiting for me!" she put the sheet in her inventory and departed for Urbus.

She shook her head. Just looking at the piles of paper made her head dizzy. What's up with the NPCs in Urbus? Were they used to throw away their daily grocery lists here? There were lot of papers in front of her. She just have to pick two Sonata's Music Sheets out of.. countless papers. She closed her eyes and blindly picked one. When she opened her eyes she couldn't believe she just picked one music sheet. How lucky. But knowing Elise's luck the last paper's gonna end up below some monstrous mob which isn't going to be as easy as four spiders she faced.

Elise encouraged herself to look for the missing piece of the puzzle. One more and then she doesn't have to stay in this paper paradise no more.

Finally she got to the other side of the tall rocks. "There you are" she walked to pick the paper. Then she froze midway after she took a glance at her surroundings. There weren't just one paper, but a lot of them lying literally everywhere. Stuck in the middle of rocks, lying on the ground, perching above a tall rock which was impossible to climb, and even atop of a Stone Spider? Elise snatched the paper in front of her and read it. "'Two slices of bread, an egg, boar..' Hah. Cooking ingredients?"she tossed it away because the paper had no use to her. The wind seem to dislike her, as it made the tossed paper fell into the middle of other papers. She stared in disbelief. "This quest... Better worth the trouble I've been going through" she was getting more and more impatient.

Elise was lucky to find another face-up music sheet above a rock. Just not lucky enough to get it. A gentle wind breeze flew the sheet away from her. She stretched her hand to get it but to no avail. "Wait up!" she tried to catch it by stretching her rapier. The sheet struck the wide part of the blade but another gust sent it astray. She watched as the paper steadily landed behind tall rocks which were too high and steep to climb. She put her hand on her waist. Now she had to take a detour to fetch the paper. Let's hope it didn't land far or else it would take longer to finish this quest.

Elise tried to sidestep left and pierce its back. The spider clawed her moving legs, causing her to stumble beside it. Before she touched the ground she had slashed the spider using the additional force from her fall, splitting the Stone Spider into two parts. The spider stopped moving. Elise rolled to her back. She used her hands to push herself from the ground to watch the spider. It didn't react to Elise's movement. A red bright line appeared where the Thorny Rose had cut the spider. The spider's body parted into two and shattered like glass. Elise sat and sighed. "That was close.. I hope the music sheets are worth the risk". She touched the paper and it was moved to her inventory. She didn't shut her HUD after that. She checked her HP bar. The earlier combat brought her HP to red zone. Just a little more and she can earn a name in the Monument of Life. It might be wise to avoid combat at the moment and focus on retrieving unguarded papers.

Another paper? It was lying face-up, revealing another sets of music notes. It must be Sonata's. Elise went to collect it. When she held out her hand to pick it an opportunist Stone Spider took the chance to attack. It bit her arm and was starting to chew before she, like with the previous spider, skewered it away with her rapier. She frowned and brushed her wounded arm. "I can't even have a break with you spiders around, can I?" she glowered at the spider. Her HP bar has dropped into yellow zone. Her wounds hurt but they were nullified by her adrenaline rush. She was too focused on bringing the spider down she forgot about her own condition.

After her attack Elise didn't stop her movements to attack the spider. She quickly turned and rushed to the Stone Spider, which was reorganizing its stance after earlier leap. The Spider clearly didn't expect the attacks interval to be this close. It only moved its front claws, which she dodged right easily. With the carapace exposed she pierced the cephalothorax before gutting the spider to its abdomen. The spider silently shattered and dissolved. It seem gutting was a good move to finish the spiders.

"In the end, Als are Als" she claimed her trophy, another Material. Killing three Spiders in a row has made her a bit conceited ignoring the fact the last spider almost got her. She checked the paper the Spider guarded. Another music sheet with Sonata's sign! She inspected the paper for awhile. Its composition was different than the first music sheet. She put it in her inventory. Three more to go.

Elise tossed her messed ponytail backwards. She was wounded and got caught off guard from the earlier attack. The same thing must not happen again. 'Stay vigilant unless you want to end up as a spider's food, Adriane.' she mustered her concentration. She dashed to the spider with the sword inches from the rocky ground. She swung her rapier in crescent motion. The spider moved forward and tried to bite her hand which was holding the rapier. The blade changed direction in her attempt not to get hurt more. Both attacks missed. The rapier flew above the spider so the spider couldn't reach Elise's hand.

Elise observed her surroundings and a paper lying on the ground not far from her. Why didn't she notice it before, it's right where she killed the first spider. She didn't see any mobs in the vicinity so she went to grab the paper without any suspect that a mob might use the same trick she used. Elise was kneeling to pick the paper when a Stone Spider sprung from the rock above her to her back. "What?!" Elise nearly got a heart attack. She impaled the spider away from her. After the spider stumbled Elise was going to attack the creature once more but suddenly she felt a sharp pain on her back. It seem the spider had taken its opportunity to bite Elise's back before she skewered it away.

There's one way to end this quickly. Elise relaxed her arms and tightened only her grip. She remember the time when she killed a wolf in her journey to a place called Horunka Village. That time the wolves were agile it gave the party a lot of trouble. Elise eliminated the first wolf with her trump card at the cost of wounds and exhaustion. She know she shouldn't use it often as it puts a lot of strain on the body. But she was already impatient. Besides she didn't waste a lot of energy to fight the spider earlier so just once should be fine.

The spider creeped closer to her side. She didn't face the creature. Only her eyes trailing the mob which showed that she's aware of its presence. Thinking the girl wasn't being vigilant the Stone Spider took a few low jumps forward trying to bite Elise.

She dodged right and only got bitten on her left toe. She kicked the spider off and it dropped backing her, just as she needed. "Clair de Lune." she spun on one foot slashing the spider into pieces. Elise looked like a whirling tornado of black and red with her Thorny Rose in action. She kept her balance while spinning and dissecting the spider's cephalothorax. When she couldn't feel any resistance she stopped her circular motion with a light foot drag. Now the spider's gone she picked the paper. It was a bit dirty. Elise brushed the dust off it. The paper contained music notes which were revised several times. The name Sonata was written on the bottom right corner. "Got one" she put it in her inventory

Elise launched her sword at the enemy with a quick move only a flash of red and black of the rapier was seen. She aimed straight for the head, trying to get the blade through from head to abdomen. She was eager to check if the paper it's protecting is the right one that she rushed for the kill as fast as possible.

Maybe too rushed. The spider evaded the attack by jumping above the straightforward thrust and tried to counterattack. Elise was surprised but she reassessed the situation with a quick thinking and ducked from the spider's leap. It leapt above her and landed with its six legs awkwardly. Elise slowed her steps and turned back. The enemy was more nimble than the previous one, even without two legs.

Elise walked closer to the spider. She has cut its legs so it shouldn't be able to move well. It's her chance to finish the Stone Spider cleanly. She stopped just outside of the Spider's biting range. The monster's pitiful condition was reflected on the blue eyes. It didn't move her for a second though. She raised her rapier high. "Rest in piece, monster" she brought her sword down from the skies...

..and hit the rock hard the Rose sunk an inch into it. The spider adapted fast moving with its remaining six legs. It jumped to the right avoiding the vertical gash. Elise redrew her rapier from the rock. "You.. Quite a bother, aren't you?" Luckily she had cut two legs. She held her rapier horizontally. Will a stab work like with the previous spider?

She closed her HUD. She still has five more sheets to find. In the rocky terrain there are few dusty papers between rocks, below one, and in the middle of the Stone Spider crowds. The papers were either hidden or guarded by the spiders. Even if she managed to pick one it could be any paper, not the sheets she's looking for. Five of them.. Like searching for five needles in a haystack.

Elise decided to take the obvious ones first, although riskier. She sneaked to another Stone Spider guarding a paper. It's not possible to steal the paper without the spider knowing considering the distance between them, so if she was to engage in combat she should get the first strike when it didn't suspect her. Her blade swiped horizontally, cutting two of the mob's legs clean off. The Stone Spider turned to attack but after Elise's strike it got thrown of its balance. Elise avoided the attack by a mere inch. She took a few steps back. She couldn't let the mob to get closer than that.

    Elise : 11/11

    Stone Spider : 3/6 (-3)
