Rosary

Rose was trying to make thing easy on little one, but the crazy sprite when and spawned more boar. Her mom instincts kicked in and she ran after the pack to be close enough in case things went to [censored], but she was too far out to get there in time. The tiny one managed to slice through two, and the rest of the party picked off what was left. She joined up with the group and papped the small girl on the head. "Good work," Rosary told her with a smile. Everyone had what they needed so it was time to head back. The party moved along back to the shop so that they could complete their quest. Val walked a little ahead of the group so that Rai might get in a Firm Anima pep talk or whatever it was that happened post battle.

They made it back to the shop and she turned in her quest items and with that they were done. “Thank you for letting me tag along with your party.” she said to Rai. “You all did so well.” She addressed the other girls. They might not yet meet Raidou’s expectation, but she thought their work was splendid. She thanked them once more and headed off to take care of something before heading home.

Killing boar was obviously harder than it looked. The little one was rimed. She took a stance, made a move, and for a moment pink petals appeared but soon fell away as the girl’s sword stroke sliced cleanly through the air letting the animal escape imminent death. Rai piped up and told the child to remain calm and focus. They had to do better than this. She reminded herself that she was part of them, and it was her job to steer the piggy once more. True enough they could’ve spawned another set, but she didn’t want to risk injury to the child. It was better finish off the one that was there and call it a day. If she killed it, and they had to do this again, she would try her best to take the numbers down to make it easier on the little blue one to continue the hunt for her last piece. God willing this would be the last time.

Val veered around the piggy and brought it dashing back toward Setsuna. “If you’ve got any tricks kiddo, now would be the time to put them to use!”

One piggy left. For being so little, the girl was actually holding her own, far better than Rosary was at the moment. The rest of the party had backed off and left the two of them in the open field. They were watching. She could feel the many pairs of every observing. She reminded herself that the thousand stares weren’t for her. They were for the little one. How awful that must feel. But it was necessary. She was little and if she wasn’t careful, she wasn’t going home to her parents except in a casket. They had to be hard on the small one, her loss would be far worse than any of theirs. In a way, they’d accepted responsibility for the child and they meant for her to grow and Rosary was here to help. She headed the piglet off and arced its trajectory. With the flat side of her blade she slapped it against the backside of the boar pup causing it to squeal and run full steam back in the direction of the little one.

“INCOMING!” she hollered at the small girl. With any luck she’d cut right through the damned thing and they’d be done.

It seemed that neither she nor the little blue one were having any luck trying to get the damned boars to behave themselves. They managed to break apart and circle every which way making it hard to decide which to go for first. Rosary swung her sword, but every attack managed to catch only air. One came at her from the left flank. She only had a moment to manage to put her shield between herself and the damned thing. It crashed into her and took a dead on hit from her thorns. They bled the boar pup out and it burst into pixels leaving her another prize. She collected her last prize and looked to the little one. The boar on the battlefield were gone, but it’d only be a moment before the next set would manifest. She looked at the little one and gave her a nod. Val was not about to let the damn boar break ranks again. She’d do her best to keep them together so the small one could tear through them.

Things happened fast, even faster than Rose could process. She was going to have to get quicker at following the field. The higher floors were going to have faster, stronger beasts. If she did not develop the skill to monitor the flow of battle and keep track of what was going on around her, she was liable to get killed or get someone else killed. Coming back to the scene, Boars were everywhere, especially on her. One missed, but the other came bashing right into her. Or would’ve. The little sucker got caught up into her thorns.  It died and left her a lovely parting gift. She swiped up the boar’s tusk and readied herself for the next round of piggies. 

Left and right, the rest of her party went after boar. One went down and one wounded. She was going after the injured one. Easy kill, easy collect.

Firm Anima worked seamlessly together. It was exactly as a party should work. It was Rose who felt out of place. So far she’d been carried through several quests save the Gemini. That jerk she managed to crush all on her own. But this was different, this was learning to maneuver with a group, read the situation and react accordingly while keeping the safety of your teammates in mind.  Again and again each member plowed through the little piggies like hot knives through butter. She had to show them that she was capable enough to make it to the front.

A new group of piglets spawned and Rosary was up. She readied her weapon and activated <<Rage Spike>>...

As the battle continued, it seemed that the little piggies were seemingly getting smarter. Was this part of the programming? She knew not, but as the pigs came within striking distance, they split into two groups. She targeted the set that ran to her left, and swung away. Her blade slashed through one piglet, and obliterated the other. She had overswung her weapon and nearly hit another one, but she only slashed away at air. The two left headed away from Rose and the woman quickly collected her loot drop while the piggies fled.

One more time the Happy Family moved in succession until it came to her. Raidou managed to slay all but one little piggy, leaving him for Rosary to finish off. The party leader gave her some words of encouragement, but this only made the woman laugh. “Alright, alright...” she called back. This time she could not disappoint.

Rosary activates Snake Bite, Swings and Misses!

Val lined up her attack and activated <<Snake Bite>>  as she went toe to toe with the piggy on trajectory with her path. Once more, she failed splendidly in connecting her attack. Her blade swing through the air, but the clever boar up twisted away from her attack. The woman stumbled forward as the swing over extended. Rose meant to hit her opponent square on, and caused the woman to stumble. This was humiliating. Here she was supposed to be of assistance to Rai and his party, and she was entirely holding them back.

“They’re amazing...” Rose huffed upon hearing Raidou’s words. If they’d needed to do the beginners' quests, then it was obvious the two females were in the same boat as she. Still,their party, as new as  they were, moved quite in unison. More so than players much higher up upon the food chain. She meant to chide Raidou for his harsh critic, but he was not wrong. They needed to do more, be faster, stronger, move more seamlessly. All of this would mean the difference between life and death for their little guild. This was a matter of life and death, and Rosary reminded herself she needed to be more conscious of this. 

The party worked in round, each pulling through until a new set of boars was spawned. Rai obliterated them in one shot, save one little piggy headed her way.

Rosary charged the boar and turned out her blade and went in for the attack. She swung, but the boar rolled out of the path of her attack and outmaneuvered the woman.

“Little bastard...” 

At this rate, she really would be the last to collect the items she needed to complete the quest.

“You’ve got to be [censored] kidding me...”

Rose’s jaw dropped. Raidou has brought her along to help his merry band of elves improve upon their teamwork, but there was nothing to work on. It was [censored] ridiculous. Each moved seamlessly in formation. The little one striking first, the busty one finishing right behind her and their leader who happened to miss his attack,  but they all moved so quickly she had little time to process what had actually happened. “You’re [censored] with me, aren’t you?” Rose shouted over to their fearless leader. The last boar was hardly alive and she could’ve easily finished the creature, but she’d another objective in mind. As she moved to keep up with her team, she swapped out her grandmother’s rosary for La Andenza Apoyo. A good portion of their party had already collected their items. There was no good Goddamn way she was going to be the one to hold these badasses back.

Rosary laughed and shook her head. She hoped wherever her girls were, that they were having a lovely Easter. Val’s expression changed from that of a smile to crestfallen. Most days she was able to think about her babies and smile, but the sweet memory made it all well up inside of her and in a moment, tears slid down her cheeks. She sniffled and wiped her face reminding herself that she’d see them soon. 

Lifting her head she realized the sun was starting to get low and it was time for her to be heading back. She quickly collected up her things and stood, giving herself a good stretch. For an afternoon’s work, her haul wasn’t too bad. She’d gotten a good amount of materials to sell to Firm Anima and a bundle of eggs for... something. Val gave the area one more visual sweep hoping she hadn’t missed or forgotten anything. Everything was as it should be; and with that, she left.

Shannon still wanted to play. Of course she did, she was small, and the task of finding eggs was fun so Val was going to provide more eggs. As Shan looked around, Val would reach into the child’s basket and grab an egg or two and toss them back over her shoulder. “Baby, look!” she would say as she turned around to point out the couple of eggs that she had thrown. Shannon was ecstatic. She’d scoop them up and add them to her basket not realizing a thing about what was going on. She did this over and again for a good half an hour, snagging eggs and launching them out for her daughter to find. It was a blessing that Shannon was only two. She could not count and was otherwise unaware of the fact that the number of eggs in her pile wasn’t growing. It was all too perfect, really.

As the small girl cupped the egg in her hands she stared at it for some time. “What do you have there?” Val asked her daughter. Very triumphantly the little pig tailed princess held her hands out to her mother and showed her. “EGG!” she squeaked excitedly. “Yes.. egg,” Val shook her head and laughed. “Now put it in your basket,” the woman said as she pointed to the pink wicker basket sitting on the ground. Shannon dumped the egg into the basket and picked it up in search of more eggs. 

One by one, the girl collected an egg, “OH! anotha’ egg!” The babe would exclaim after every discovery and placed it in her basket. Val had only bought her baby a handful of eggs. She wanted her child to have fun, but not to consume so much candy. But after finding all of her booty, Shannon was not done hunting for eggs.

Tedious. The work she was carrying out was so very tedious. Hunt, spy, collect, repeat. Well over a dozen times she performed the act and while she was quite successful in her task, and the very description of the repetitive action was starting to wear upon Rosary’s writer. But onward to the end of this thread Rosary and her author would go. Eggs and materials were essential! There were prizes to be won and treasures to collect because of it!

As Val continued her hunt, she started to think of home and her babies and all the Easter’s before. There were so many good times on Easter. Even though the holiday was to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, her little family enjoyed the other, more pagan aspects of the holiday, namely the very activity she endeavored right now: Easter egg Hunting. But that wasn’t the only plus, there was so much more good stuff like Easter Baskets, pretty pastel dresses, and of course Easter Dinner. Holiday ham, mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus and all the other fixings. Just thinking of all the delicious food made her mouth water. Or it would if that were actually something that could be executed in the game’s programming.

Time slipped through Rosary’s fingers like she was trying to grasp at sand. Hours had flown by much to the woman’s surprise, but she was nowhere near where she needed to be. There were still eggs to collect and materials to be harvested. She had made a deal with Che and his band of misfit toys. She would help them as they’d helped her; one hand washes the other. She needed to bring them materials in exchange for the sweet gear they’d supplied her. She scoured the flower beds and managed to find a couple more herbs that would please the hardworking party. As she tucked her goods away in her inventory she spied another glimmer of light near where she dug for her regimens. Parting the flowers, she spied an entire clutch of the shiny little eggs. Scooping them up into her hands she quickly stored them into her inventory gingerly as she counted them. Six, there were six of those little fuckers! “Excellent...” she said with a smile.

The bed she combed through was only that of Hosta. They were beautiful, and all different hues, even jewel toned. She wondered if the colors were of imagination or that of actual Hosta plants. She ran her fingers over the leaves of majestic blue with a deep emerald trim. As she brushed her fingers over the plant studying the veins that ran through the leaves, she spotted something below. Parting the rows with her hands she located three more foiled eggs. It was a wonder that she even managed to spot the little eggs as they were damn near the same color as the plants themselves. “Not bad,” she told herself as she tossed an egg into the air and caught it with one hand. She placed them in her inventory and moved on to the next bed. 

Rose ran her fingers over the gladiolas and spotted a butterfly bush. She walked over to inspect the orange and raspberry sherbert colored blooms. When she finally made it home, she was going to plant butterfly bushes just like this all around her little home.

“I wonder if I should bring the children...” she mused. The courtyard was the perfect place for the little ones to come run and play. “Maybe after the event though..” she decided. Last thing she wanted was for the kiddos to find the hidden eggs and chow them down instead of collecting them. Chubby little Alex would definitely shove the eggs into his round little cheeks and over fist . She shook her head as she thought about the child. He was a good boy, but if she didn’t lock the pantry, he had a habit of helping himself to all the snacks even though food was not necessary in this world. Still he would hold his little stomach and insisted that he was so very hungry. She wondered how his little body fared wherever it was. Was he growing thinner or was he still the rotund cherub he was in this world? She hoped wherever he was, he was being well fed.

She just couldn’t believe the haul she’d acquired. So many eggs and so many herbs. She wasn’t really much of a gatherer, but she gathered at least, by the end of her little excursion she would be. (Ha, ha, I’m funny! No, not really). She found this soothing. The soft spring sun, the cool breeze, the smell of hyacinth. Things were not so much like this back home where she grew up in Southern California. The weather was rather temperate year round, but the only places like this were private gardens. Mainly the air around her home smelled of brine and Bain de Soleil Orange Gelee. Growing up along Corona del Mar had its charm. Still, this was a lovely place to be nonetheless. 

Rose continued to sift through the flower beds collecting up some wild onion that framed the edge of one of the beds. There she found several more eggs and she collected these up as well.

And down, down she came, smacking and bouncing on every ranch on her way down. The tree top circled around back and forth between sky and ground until she smacked straight into the ground. For all her bumping and thumping, the tree violently shook until its contents came raining down. Peppercorns a plenty littered the ground and she eagerly scooped them up, adding them to her inventory. As she collected her sorely gotten gains, she noticed the plethora of eggs scattered about her. “Holy  Mary, mother of God!” She exclaimed and threw herself on top of the pile of eggs, sweeping them into her reach and hugging them tightly. “Oh my goodness, yes!” She reveled in delight. Who knew so many eggs could be hidden in the trees of all places?

Val carefully and slowly got to her feet on the first limb. She reached overhead to grab on to the next limb to steady her feet before hoisting herself up once more. She hung once again, her hands tight around the branch, and her feet walking up along the side of the tree until she could flip her legs over. Again and again she completed the maneuver until she was damn near enough to the nest she was trying to reach.  She walked across the branch she stood upon using her hands overhead to keep her balanced as she moved as bet she crossed the tree limb. 

The branch got ever thinner, until she could walk no further. The nest was just ever so out of reach. She reached her fingers out toward the nest extending as far as she could, her arms straining for reach as she leaned forward on tip toe to elongate herself even more.

Val hung upside down like a sloth and held on for dear life. “Okay damn it, you got yourself in this mess, now climb!” With every bit of strength she could muster, the woman hoisted herself up onto the branch of the pink peppercorn tree. She felt her midsection resting on the limb and she powered her way up onto the branch wriggling and kicking wildly until she was perched into the tree on her bottom, her legs dangling over the edge of the branch. 

She had done it!

Her moment of triumph was overshadowed by the fact that there were still several more rungs to go before she could reach the nest. So there she went, scooting herself toward the center of the tree so she could get up the tree using the fattest part of each branch in order to climb. She found the bases of the branches to be quite solid.

As she combed the peppercorns out of the tree, she noticed a small nest in one of the higher branches. There upon the ledge of it was the familiar shine of colored foil. Pink this time. Rose starred up into the tree and then down around the base of the tree itself asking herself if she was really going to do this. Rosary was forty. Forty year old women were not supposed to be climbing up trees to collect eggs... or were they.

“[censored] it,” she told herself, “ I’m going up!”

So sure as the day was long, the woman began to climb up into the tree. The first wrung of branches was rather low. She hopped up and wrapped her arms around the lower branch. She rocked herself back and forth gaining momentum until her feet hit the face of the tree. Quickly she ran her legs up and over until she could swing her legs around the branch wrapping them tightly around the branch she clung to.

Val swept her long dark hair out of her face and twisted her locks into a makeshift braid, flipping its tail through one of the twists catching and locking plaits in her hair. The sun was warm on her face and her bare arms. Had she been at home, it was likely she’d get a tan, in Aincrad however, there was no getting a gorgeous golden brown, only her fair buttery glow. 

The courtyard she found herself in was a trip! By rights, none of the items she was locating inside the courtyard’s stone walls should be found in such a place. Some of the plants grew in colder climates, while other plants preferred tropical climates. The pink peppercorns she plucked from  the tree that towered overhead grew in Brazil. “Maybe this place itself is an Easter Egg...” she mused. It could be why there were no raiding parties gathering in the space. If it was a hidden location, she would do her best to keep it so.

Valerie began to dig about under the soil, turning it over and scooping it out of a small hole, shoveling it a bit like a doggie trying to bury its bone. While she did not turn up anymore eggs, she did turn up not one, but two Mandragora. She looked at the fat root babies and jiggled them about before stuffing them into her inventory. Che and his reprobates were going to love all the good she was finding for them. Rose had worked out a pretty fat deal with the man, she brought him mats and he would give her col. Aincrad economics for the win!

The courtyard was not only lush in potion making items, but it  was stocked full of the foil wrapped eggs. She found another couple hiding beneath some Black-Eyed Susans that swayed in the cool breeze that swept through the garden paradise and rustled through the leaves of the trees.
