  1. Sigurd started off towards the rocks. Her mind was racing now as more ideas came to her. It wasn't just plants and mushrooms that could be harvested for potions. There were certain insects, and animals as well as animal parts that could be collected as well. She would have to rule out the animal parts as those came from fighting enemies and her quest specifically stated that she was not to collect materials from battle. That meant it was anything she could immediately collect and add to her inventory. The no work required type of things. Now that she thought about it, there had been a river running through the quest zone. that would be a better place to search.

She changed course and within a few minutes the river was in sight. It wasn't even a river so much as a wide stream, It was gentle and had many trees growing along its bed. It was a nice place, and more than once she had observed people fishing in it, though she doubted there was much to catch in it. Still, it was a great place to waste a day.

At the rivers edge she knelt down, looking into the waters. They were clear and inviting, and on any other day she might have considered resting her feet in it. Today was different though, and she needed to look for more than a nice place to relax. She didn't spend long looking when she caught sight of a salamander. Even better, it was a harvestable material. She smiled and quickly added it to her inventory.

  2. Her search continued along the bottom of the bush. Sigurd was fueled by her success and determined to find more. But it seemed that this bush had only had the single mushroom growing under it. That was no bother, as she hadn't expected to find everything in one spot. Certainly the system had safeguards to prevent that from happening. That was why other players would farm areas, moving along until Materials respawned back in other locations. She had listened in to a few of these conversations, and a few of the successful node harvesters would brag about finding hundreds of materials a day. She assumed they would sell them for profit as there were limits on how many crafting attempts one could make a day. She had wanted to try that herself, a get rich quick scheme so to speak.

Once satisfied that she had scoured the bush entirely, she got up and began scouting a new place to search. She knew one item to look for and would make certain to keep her eyes peeled for more of those red and white mushrooms like what she had found before. Not far off there was a rocky outcrop that looked promising, and after a quick check of her map she determined that it was within her quest zone.

  3. She continued to root around at the base of the bush. Around behind it, hidden away in the shade of its leaves she spotted a mushroom growing on it's own. It was a few inches high, with a white stalk and a red cap. It even had some white spots that reminded her of a video game she had played once. Sigurd chuckled as she remembered that when the player made contact with the mushroom, it would make them grow, and give them an extra point of damage when getting hit by an enemy. Something about that memory struck a cord with her, as potions did have the ability to restore health, so to did the mushroom in her memory grant an extra health. She reached out her hand to touch the mushroom, when a notification popped up stating that the mushroom was harvestable. Her grin widened as she collected her first material. So far this was easy enough, one down, 4 more to go. Then it was a simple matter of going back to the workshop and crafting with the NPC

  4. Sigurd set out to work without hesitation. There were plenty of places to search, and she started with a nearby bush. She meticulously went through its leaves, taking her time to inspect them. She pulled one from the bush, turning it over in her hands. It was green, and felt slightly gritted to the touch. It was a strange plant, but even with the plucked leaf, nothing came up to harvest materials. Still that didn't mean this was an entire dead end, there were other parts of the plant worth checking. She dropped the leaf and it turned to pixels and faded away before it even hit the ground. She lowered herself to her hands and knees and began poking around the vase of the bush. She was now looking for roots or even mushrooms that might have material value. Though despite her efforts, nothing could be found. This would not discourage her though, she had planned for setbacks, and knew that not all materials were easy to find. She would just need to keep looking.

  5. As she exited the building Sigurd pulled up her map again. She didn't need it to find a way out of the city, that she knew already, instead she wanted to take a look at the highlighted area again. She began walking, all the while zooming in and out of the map screen. The area in particular that had been highlighted was one she had visited many times. There were a few rocky outcrops that were good for sitting on, as well as quite a large supply of wild plants growing in abundance. Now that she thought about it, more than once the option to collect materials had appeared before her, and she had always dismissed it, thinking it to be a waste of time. If only she had known then that that would have been great practice or even a sustainable source of income, she might have started harvesting a long time ago. Still though, better late than never. That was something her mom used to say to her. She had always rolled her eyes at that kind of wisdom, buy now she was starting to understand it a little better.

Her pace quickened as she neared the city gates, in a few moments she would free of the confines and crowds that the starting city offered. A chance to breathe, to move un obstructed, and begin her search. She knew there were always players prowling around out here, hunting materials, fighting monsters and occasionally trying to rob other players, so she made a mental note to keep her eyes peeled. Last thing she wanted was to be drawn into a needless fight. It was like that on other floors, but down here there was a sense of desperation, people too afraid to risk their lives up there, so they preyed with extra viciousness on the weaker players who lingered. She was not going to be a victim.

Outside the walls it was just as she expected. A beautiful day. The weather was wonderful, blue skies with a gentle breeze pushing a few clouds lazily across the sky. On days past, she had lingered out here, laying in the grass and watching the world go by. Today though she had purpose and there was no time to waste on idle fancies.

  6. As she neared the towns center, a large platform with many bridges connecting it to the other parts of town, she was able to see the large wooden warp gate. She had used it to get here. That already seemed like a week ago in her own mind. It was unbelievable to think that she had managed such a drastic realization in such a short time, but thats how it worked sometimes. She would need to sit down and change her plans a little. While she wasn't going to jump up and party with every person she came across, she certainly felt that she could at least be present and start adding other people into her equations. Perhaps they could be useful to her now. More so than she had originally thought.

Sigurd neared the gate and stopped taking a look back at the town. Naturally she would be back to visit this treetop village as it now had a special meaning to her. But for now she needed rest, and that meant a return to floor one, if only for a little while. "T-t-t-town of B-b-b-beginnings" She stuttered to the gate causing it to open up. Without another word or wayward look she slipped into the portal, ending her adventure for the day.

  7. "The w-w-witch?" He stuttered back. Clearly she had surprised him and he could not fully deal with it. His friends began to pipe in, all talking at once. "How did you do it? what are you? Did you hack the game? Was it magic?" There were so many questions, so many that she would not answer. It was all going to be her secret, and they would talk. They would tell others about this, and soon her name would spread. "M-m-magick." She stated with a wink before walking away leaving all of them to process what had happened. As got further away she could hear the troupe erupt into a ruckus, patting their still dumbfounded friend on the back as he watched her walk away. She couldn't help but giggle a little now as her thoughts drifted to a song she had heard in a movie. "I put a spell on you." She thought as she crossed the catwalks towards the main portal in the towns center.

That had certainly been something crazy, and she had certainly left one hell of an impression on at least one other player. In the future she had a feeling that these individuals would speak well of her, and even be ready to lend her a hand if she needed. That was how things started. It wasn't even just for that though. She had enjoyed the positive attention, doing something new and bold. It had only added to her sense of accomplishment today. This was by far a great feeling and she hated that she had to end her day. But if she wanted to keep going she would need to rest, and pick up again in the morning.

  8. It took her a short while to reach the main town of floor six. But she had managed to do so in time as the sun was just setting over the horizon. The trees and jungle had been illuminated beautifully in the setting sun. She had been lucky that there was no rain today as that would have put a damper on her spirits for sure. She smiled crossing the towns thresh hold just as the torches came to life. Surprisingly the town was rather busy. She climbed up one of the carved wooden stairwells that lead up into the trees, where a majority of the town was located. On the main walkway she spotted a familiar hooded figure walking about. A smirk crossed her lips as she passed by her foe, offering a nod that went unnoticed by the NPC. He wasn't able to recognize her now that the quest was completed.

Not far off was a tavern of sorts with a patio. There she noticed a couple players having drinks. she recognized them at once as being the players from earlier, the ones who had made the attempt at the Gemini and failed. They had spotted her too and quickly stood up, offering a few cat calls and cheers to her as she approached them. One had opened his mouth to say something, but before he could, Sigurd pressed the skull she carried into his hands. He looked down at it baffled before she grabbed him and pulled him in for a kiss. Silence had fallen onto the group before they erupted into louder cheers causing other players to look over. After a few moments passed, Sigurd pushed herself free of the other player and took her skull back, leaving him dumbfounded by her sudden assertiveness.

"Y-y-you kissed me?" He stammered causing her to laugh. Finally someone else could stutter for a change. "Who the hell even are you?" He asked regaining his composure as the rest of his group came up to stand at his sides. Sigurd smiled and pointed to her name bar above her head. "I am the witch." It wasn't often she was able to manage to say a sentence without stuttering, but in this case she had managed it perfectly. She was feeling confident, genuinely confident, for the first time since logging in.

  9. As the time went on, Sigurd would come to rest her head on her knees. She was comfortable like this, and her thoughts were running like water now. But up ahead the sun was starting to set. Before long another day would come to pass here in Aincrad, and she had no desire to be outside of a city after the lights went out. Still she would have a few moments longer before she needed to head back. It would be a few more minutes to enjoy the quiet, and the time alone. When she realized what she was doing she gasped. It was exactly like what the Gemini had said. Even now, with her first steps made she was holding back. She could have gone back at any point, but she didn't. She had stayed here alone. She should have been celebrating her victory with her friends, and instead she had none. She was alone, and miserable. Even having someone to taunt or bother would be better than this.

She stood up hastily dusting herself off. This was no time to sit around and sulk. She had bested the Gemini. She had on her first attempt at level one. How many people could say they had accomplished such a feat? It was time for the witch to make her presence known, and become part of this world. Be it as a force of good, or evil, she needed to put herself out there. Once she got back to town she was going to do something crazy. She didn't know what yet, but it would be out of the ordinary for her. Something to celebrate her victory, Something that would leave her name on some ones lips.

She smirked and started off towards the town. She already had it planned out now. Tomorrow, she was going to start another quest, the tutorial quest that she had avoided because she thought it to be lame. Her mistakes here had proven that she didn't know enough about the systems just yet, that quest would help her, make her more competent, more dangerous, and more helpful if the situation called for it. Everything was starting to make more sense now.

  10. She wasn't sure of what to do now. She could go back to the town, use the warp gate and continue on with her plans, but that didn't seem right now. Instead she spotted a tree nearby and wandered over to it, sitting beneath it. She needed to think about things, contemplate what it all meant, and decide if she needed a plan for this as well. Naturally she assumed it should be more organic, planning to make friends could land her in trouble as it might blind her to warning signs. Not to mention she remembered having friends as a child. It was always so smooth and easy. Perhaps it could be that easy again if she just put her self out there for people to see. At the very least, developing bonds would give her a better idea of who was out there and what they were capable of. Such info was worth its weight in gold.

She sighed again, pulling her knees to her chest and wrapping her arms around them. Perhaps she was just insanely lonely now. She had been in here years, and barely spoken to any living person. Was the loneliness finally pushing her out of her safety zone? It was hard to think that something like that could have pushed her to this point, but it was possible. And if she failed and died in her attempts she knew it wouldn't have been such a bad thing. She didn't actually fear it, though she wasn't keen on ending up dead either.

This was all confusing and far too heavy to deal with. Maybe she just needed to focus on her goals until she could decipher her feelings a little better.

  11. As Sigurd neared the man in the shop he held up a hand to stop her. He hadn't actually looked up from his work, but had only moved to stop her. He was leaning over a workbench, a dropper in his other hand as he leaned carefully over a set of vials. He was moving slowly, deliberately, trying to make sure he got things exactly right. A moment later a single drop emerged from his dropper and landed perfectly in one of the vials turning the blue liquid it contained clear as it seemed to swirl around on it's own inside its vial. "No, no no..." He muttered as he straightened himself up and looked down at his work bench. "It's all wrong. But i'm close, so very close. Ah yes, Hello there." He turned his gaze upon her now and she took another step forward. "Are you here for my assistance in learning the basics of Sword Art Online?"

Sigurd nodded "Y-y-yes I am" She took another step but stopped when he held out his hand again. "First thing's first. You need to learn how to forage for crafting materials. You'll have to venture outside of the walls for this one. Scattered around the fields are plants that can be salvaged for just this occasion. You'll need to collect five materials for me and then I can teach you how to craft a potion. It's really quite a simple task, so I have faith that you can achieve it."

Sigurd nodded again, pulling up her map, and noticing that a large location had been highlighted just outside the town. That was where she would find what she was looking for. Like the NPC had said, it was really quite simple, and she was eager to get started. Without another word she turned swiftly and left the workshop.

  12. The town of beginnings. Everyone took their first steps in this game right here. It had become symbolic to people in that sense. It was the only place in the whole game that literally every single player had been to at least once. In that sense it was special. To Sigurd it was the opposite. Every player had been here, but many had not left. The town of begging is what she had come to know it as. It had reached a point now where one could not walk down the road without someone asking for col, or gear. And if not the beggars, the militias were out extorting loot from the few players trying to leave or better themselves. This town was a terrible place and she was happy to be preparing to leave it.

Sigurd planned to exploit the beginner quests. They had a level cap on them, meaning that many of the players who had advanced quickly had lost their chance to get them. She however was still low enough to fully take advantage of the tutorials which was exactly what she intended to do. She was now fueled by her victory from the previous day so to say she was excited to get this going was an understatement.

She needed to find an NPC named Zackariah to get this going. Luckily she had known where he was for some time now. He had a workshop in the first town. It was easy enough to find, and as Sigurd rounded a corner it fell into view. She quickened her pace, eager to get started knowing full well that this quest came in multiple parts. On top of that she still needed her career quest to do before she could consider moving herself up out of floor one. With just a little effort she would be done all of this fairly easily.

She entered the workshop and was instantly greeted with the smell of burning ingredients concealed in a thick haze of smoke. She coughed loudly as she closed the door behind her and approached the NPC quest giver.

  13. Sigurd hated how amused the Gemini seemed by her questions. Still it was giving her much to think about. She crossed her arms again. "Well, there is no way to know. You just need to try. Think of it this way. How can they be certain that you aren't planning to betray them?" In a sense it was true. The risk that she would assume were the same that others had to take. "If you think about it, you have a lot more in common with them than you think. But you will never fully know that till you try."

She didn't like that answer either, though she could not deny the truth in it. She had wanted to ask more but before she could the Gemini spoke again. "Forgive me now. I must depart back to town to await my next challenger. Think about what we talked about, and I Foresee you going on to do great things here." With that it turned on the spot and began to walk away.

She was left alone now with her thoughts. It had been profound if not frustrating. She sighed again and turned to face the town. The Gemini had already vanished, no doubt respawning within its walls to continue its own quest of challenging players. It wasn't of any use to her now, she had bested it, achieved her skill, and gotten the wisdom it had to offer. Somehow though she expected to feel better than she did at this moment.

  14. The Gemini chuckled again. "The answer is simple. You need to actually give people a chance." It was the simplest of answers, yet it was the one she feared. Was there really no way to make people be be proper? She couldn't use fear or power? Instead she just needed to gamble on each person individually? It wasn't an answer Sigurd was happy with.

"S-s-s-so I j-j-just need to t-t-t-trust people, and h-h-hope it all w-works out?" That seemed like far too obvious an answer to things. And what happened if it went wrong? If she trusted someone and they chose to go behind her back. In a place like this that could be life or death. But then, these were the same people from the real world. They didn't go around then just screwing each other over, that was just a few people. Maybe it was possible that here, when there was more on the line, she was more likely to find friends, or at the very least companions.

The Gemini turned back to look at the group of previous challengers who had now decided to leave. They had made it a fair distance back towards the town, and were completely out of earshot. "Not everyone. But Don't discount every person you meet either. There are good people worthy of trust, you have to find them though." It turned to look back at her. "You don't need to be alone because you are afraid. Some people will do bad things, and others will stand by you."

"But h-h-h-how do I kn-kn-know which is which?"

  15. Sigurd was taken aback by the Gemini again. She was angered by its response. How dare it speak of things that it knew nothing about. She lived in isolation in the real world. People were cruel, people were mean. She experienced it. Up until a few years ago this program hadn't even existed. It wasn't programmed to feel pain, fear or anxiety. It had no idea what she had gone through. Without thinking she pulled her dagger and attempted to jab it into the Gemini's chest, causing it to chuckle. The quest had been completed, she could not fight with it anymore. Her attack had been entirely pointless.

"Quick to anger you are. Lead you on a path to ruin it will." It said in a mocking voice that sounded like a little green puppet in an old movie she had seen once. "Perhaps that is the root of what holds you back. You are afraid of the other players. Not what dangers they possess, but what they might do or say if they got to know you."

Sigurd sighed as she pulled her dagger from the Gemini's chest. "S-s-s-so how w-would I fix this?" There was truth in it's words and somehow it had her figured out. If only it had displayed this kind of knowledge of her during there fight, then maybe it would have won. She wasn't sure now if she was humoring this program in its analysis of her, or if she was genuinely interested in what it had to say.

  16. The Gemini chuckled as if it had won some sort of game. "And how does that make you feel?" It asked. Sigurd thought for a moment that she had caught a smug look from under its cloak, but that could have been a trick of the light. She sighed deeply, trying to push back her annoyance. She didn't like being made to realize truths about herself like this. She had been hoping for something more along the lines of directions to a new quest that might hone her particular skills, or a hint about treasure. But this seemed to be more geared to her flaws and feelings, all of which seemed unconnected to her situation.

"D-d-does it m-m-matter?" She asked crossing her arms and tapping her foot in slight irritation. All things considered she couldn't see the relevance that this conversation had to anything. None of her plans revolved around being around people, so being alone suited her just fine. "B-b-being al-l-l-lone means I d-d-don't have anyone s-s-s-slowing me d-d-down." It was a simple truth. She had heard too many stories about adventurers perishing in an attempt to save other people. So many had died because they had chosen to develop bonds and socialize.

The Gemini nodded, crossing its arms to mirror Sigurd. "Yes, that is true. Or perhaps you are worried about how others would view you?"

  17. "I mean that you held back so long and only now just started your first steps. What made you wait?"

Again she had no immediate response to the question. She had always said that she stayed back to plan. Preparing her strategy had seemed like the right choice. But how many years had it been now? How many times had she set a plan and then backed out because something changed. It's true, she had held back unnecessarily. The Gemini could be seen smiling from under its hood as if it knew it had struck a chord with her. She wanted to respond, but didn't have an answer that she could give. Had it simply been fear? The simple fear of death maybe? Or was it something else.

Advancing meant many things. Power, riches, and a chance to aid in escaping this place. But it also meant that she would need to develop relationships. Friends, enemies. Her solitary life would be over. That was the truth of it. Putting enough distance between herself and the front line meant she would not be depended on. She did not need to get close to anyone, and no one needed to get close to her. That was the truth of it.

"I w-w-wanted t-t-t-to be alone." She spoke softly, fighting through the stutter. The simple truth of it. She had told this to many people in the beginning. People had asked her to join them, or tried to make friends and she had always said she wanted to be alone. But to answer this question with this answer seemed to reach her on a different level. It carried weight, suggested a bitter life, and somehow made her unhappy.

  18. Silence continued on for several tense moments. The Gemini had not simply vanished like any other monster would have. She had heard that there was a personalized element to this quest. A moment to speak with the Gemini and learn something. It wasn't a tangible reward, but it was something that had managed to bring peace to a few players, and guide them in better directions. She was curious now as to what it would say. By this point it had reverted back to its hooded state, and was getting back up, dusting itself off nonchalantly.

Sigurd couldn't help but grin as she cast a quick glance over her shoulder to the bystanders who had been watching. She had seen three of them attempt what she just did, and they all had failed. It was satisfying to see their awestruck looks, even if her plan had not gone as she had intended. Still, she had achieved her goal, and set off on the right path. Her attention turned back to the Gemini as she tucked her dagger into its sheathe. She wondered how this might work now. When it copied her, did it scan her, or did it just download all known information on her to compile the personalized element. Furthermore what insight could it offer her. Luckily she wouldn't be left to wonder long as it began to speak.

"Strange really. you've been here so long, seen so much, yet you are still so small. What is it that you are afraid of?"

She stood in silence. This had not been what she expected at all. This didn't feel like something an NPC would say. It felt, natural, and based on observation rather than programming.

  19. Sigurd smiled as she watched the shock in the Gemini's face. She had not only landed a clear shot, but she had managed to apply the effects of her weapon to it as well. Bleed and paralysis. There was no way out now, the Gemini couldn't move, nor could it survive. It was in essence game over. Still she wanted to ice the cake so to speak, and given that the Gemini could not move, she would take advantage of that and strike it again. She moved towards it rather quickly, dagger in hand and fired off another quick shot to its ribs. This did nothing to the Gemini and Sigurd was surprised to see that she had only managed to catch the fabric of its armor with her dagger. A miss. She had not taken into account that fabric did not contribute to hit boxes in this game. But now she knew, a valuable lesson learned.

The Gemini gasped and choked as the bleed effect began to deplete it, and moments later it slowly took a step back and fell to its knees as it's health dropped to zero. In a single moment it had been defeated. It fell to the ground dramatically. A little too dramatically in Sigurd's opinion. But regardless a win had occurred and the fight was now over.

A notification had popped up, indicating that she had won the duel, with a small screen under it referencing her new skill. Disguise.

  20. Sigurd sighed to herself, her frustration clearly evident in this. The Gemini was difficult, but it was not showing her the real challenge she had been expecting, not yet anyways. Could it be that she was just way more powerful than the other players? No she couldn't afford to think like this. That kind of arrogance was what got people killed. Instead she would chalk this up to luck. Nothing else would play out like this, and she would keep in mind that this was one single isolated instance. SHe needed to keep on her guard and do things right. She remained crouched, her dagger firmly gripped in one hand while her free hand rested on the ground. She was ready to launch an attack as soon as the Gemini moved.

It did so again, like it had before, lunging at her. While its attack was good, she was prepared, and in a flash kicked over to the side, freeing herself from its range, before striking back, catching it in the under arm. Her dagger pierced deeply into and with the same speed and decisiveness she pulled it back. The end result was a quick, but critical jab into its body. The Gemini staggered back after the strike, it had a look of shock on its face. Clearly it had not expected to be caught so easily with an attack.

  21. Even with her evasion lowered, it seemed like the Gemini was having issues dealing with her. Perhaps her strategy of being defensive had thrown it off and it was entirely geared to dealing with aggression. If that was the case this was an exploitable flaw, not that she was looking to exploit anything now. It lunged again, swiping the dagger at her, and once again falling short. The range of the shortened weapon was just not what it needed to land a successful hit. In retaliation Sigurd followed suit, swiping back at it, only to miss in the same grand fashion. Eventually one of them would land a hit, it was just a question of who and when. She wanted to try to bait it out, put herself on the line and see if it would try its over aggression again. would it really make that much of a difference though? She wasn't keen on just letting it stab her after all. And besides, what if it tried to combo off a successful hit? If she was wide open there would be no way to stop it racking up the damage. In this case it was certainly best to keep going like they had.

  22. All of this was happening too slow. Sigurd had already dragged this fight on too long. She needed to find a way to speed things along. That being said she made a decision to use her next opportunity to lower her evasion stats slightly. Rather than attack, she opened up her menu and quickly unequipped her skull of longevity. The idea was that her evasion would lower, and her opponent would land a hit. Sadly even while being momentarily distracted by her menu, the Gemini still failed in its attempt to strike her. It lunged again, firing off a quick jab that seemed to fall strangely short of hitting her. She sighed as she took a step back and prepared for the next attack. She desperately needed it to come in fast again. She needed it to be confident and aggressive like it had been with the others. But given the limited range of their weapons, they were forced to play a sort of cat and mouse type of game, striking back and forth, hoping to catch the other.

  23. The Gemini wasted no time, turning sharply to attack Sigurd again, but this time she was in a prime location to attack it. It swung at her with the dagger, and as its arm arced over her head, she sprung forward, jabbing her own dagger swiftly towards its under arm.  The Gemini had shifted its weight again at the last second causing her to miss her strike a second time. Despite missing, she knew this was how she had wanted to attack, she had wanted to be fast and decisive in her strikes, delivering sharp jabs to vital organs. While she had not managed to land a strike this time, she had at least disrupted it enough to prevent it from landing any sort of instant retaliation. This might actually work if she managed to keep this up. Wait for it, evade, retaliate, and repeat. Like this she could whittle it down to nothing. It would be the ideal way to win.
