COMPLETE! [SP-F6] The Trouble With Doubles <<The Gemini>>

Recommended Posts

Floor six was a tropical jungle, lush and teeming with plant life. Of course, that meant the monsters up here were incredibly vicious as well. Teselmar had only come up here on a tip that there was an Extra Skill that was up here for the taking. He carefully avoided the spots on his map where monsters were said to spawn, as at his level, it wouldn't be wise to tempt them.

His combat suit wasn't particularly suited for such an environment, and in spite of the fact that the environment was artificial, Teselmar grew hot, and the humidity made him dab at his brow with a hand. Hopefully what he was looking for was just around the corner.

Coming up the path, Teselmar saw the object of his search approaching. A figure in a brown burlap hood, its face shrouded in shadow, was standing in the middle of the way. The path broke into a clearing right beforehand, and it screamed 'boss fight' to anyone who'd ever picked up a video game. Teselmar strode up to the NPC, whose name was <<???>>, above his head. "Traveler..." The mysterious figure addressed him as he drew near. "I extend to you a challenge: Duel me, to the death, and you will be gifted with riches, and more." The quest marker flashed on his HUD, and Teselmar smirked.

He accepted the quest, and watched as the figure changed before his eyes. The sackcloth cloak flew off, and underneath was a man who looked exactly like Teselmar! Down to the last detail, the man was an exact replica of the challenger in front of him. Teselmar kept the grin on his face, seeing the figure's name change as well: <<Gemini>>. He drew his rapier, and the doppelgänger did the same. "I might have been worried, mini me, but somebody already tipped me off about your schtick. Let's rock!" He tipped back a potion, adding +2 to his damage for the duration of the fight.

No nonsense here. Teselmar made the first attack, activating his strongest sword art, as he knew his double would do the same. Rip Ravine charged up, and Teselmar swept the blade forward in an arc, tracing a V in the air as he targeted his double.

The blade sliced across the double twice, leaving thin red lines in their wake. The double grunted, as if in slight pain. Teselmar found it a bit disturbing, seeing his own face twist like that. "Sorry pal, only one of me is me."

Thankfully, the double was silent. Teselmar didn't know if he had it in him to do the whole "fighting yourself" mental battle. The double attempted to slice Teselmar in a similar manner with its own sword art.

The blade similarly slashed Teselmar, perhaps biting a bit deeper. His armor bore the brunt of the strikes, as 6 damage to his hp was mitigated to 1. He thanked God in heaven that he'd gotten his hands on some light armor. "That almost hurt, buddy."

Teselmar leapt forward, his blade shining. He had another chance to return fire with Rip Ravine. Hopefully, he'd have the same success as last time.

The enhanced accuracy of Teselmar's blade was just enough to let him score another pair of slices against the Gemini. It wasn't quick enough to evade him, and he traced the lines across it again. He thought it was ironic that they each wielded a stabbing weapon, and yet here they were hacking away at each other.

The Gemini saw his chance, twisting away from Teselmar's last slash, and attempting to carve him up in a similar manner. The double's blade glowed sapphire as he struck.

Again, the slashes caught Teselmar, and the duo seemed to mirror each other even in how they git their teeth at being injured. Teselmar's damage potion meant that he could keep this up longer than the Gemini, but it would still be a hard-fought battle. "Tagged again. Guess I'm it, eh?"

Teselmar had been spending energy faster than he could recover it. He could only power up Rip Ravine a few more times, then he'd be completely out of energy. Then again... he could afford to pursue this strategy, since the doppelgänger copied his every technique. Letting his blade charge again, Teselmar let the system carry him into the motions once more.

ID# 44059 results: Battle: 8+1=9 (hit)

It wasn't terribly interesting, him and the double slicing each other to ribbons like this, but it was a terribly practical strategy for Teselmar. The extra damage potion that Opal had gifted him with would be what tipped the odds in his favor. Certainly, horrible luck could cripple him still, but at least the numbers were slightly more friendly this time around. The slices connected once more, drawing in crimson where he'd traced in viridian.

If Teselmar had been paying attention, he may have seen the Gemini's mouth upturn in a frown. Perhaps it was coming to the same conclusion that he was. It charged its blade in blue once again, and sent Rip Ravine's lines of energy back at him.

Teselmar rarely got to witness the exact look on his face when something went horribly wrong. In this case, it was when the clone didn't anticipate him bringing his blade back up so quickly, jarring the monster's blade so bad it dropped. Now Teselmar was at a definite HP advantage; he had to capitalize on it. "The best laid plans, right?" He said in faux sympathy to the Gemini.

This was the last use of Rip Ravine that Teselmar could use without recharging, he was just plain out of energy. But, the clone would also be out of energy after his attack too, so Teselmar saw nothing wrong in going for broke. Once more, he let the green lightning course through his rapier, arcing it down, then upwards.

 ID# 44062 results: Battle: 6+1=7 (hit)

It was actually working. Teselmar almost couldn't contain his surprise as he sliced pixels out of the Gemini once more. Checking his enemy's health bar, he found that it was falling below half. Under the smothering humidity of the jungle air, Teselmar almost trembled when he realized how easily someone could do this to him some day. Not a pleasant thought.

He knew it was coming. The question was, would he be quick enough to avoid it? The Gemini used the last of its energy to charge up a Rip Ravine that rivaled his own in terms of brilliance.

He wasn't fast enough to prevent the blade from digging into him twice, though just barely. He whispered another oath of gratitude for his armor.

Back to basics, then. He had recovered a speck of energy, so Teselmar was able to use his rapier in the way that God had intended: by stabbing it as hard as possible into other people. He shifted, attempting to skewer the Gemini.

ID# 44064 results: Battle: 6+1=7 (hit)

The tip of his blade drove home, catching his opponent in the leg. It almost looked surprised as it backed up, warding off a follow-up with its blade. It needn't have bothered, Teselmar didn't have the energy for a combo. "Your move, creep."

The Gemini swished its blade in a flourish, and attempted a Linear sword art. Its blade came rocketing at Teselmar, as the monster hoped to pin the man's sword arm with its blade.

It barely scourged Teselmar with the tip of his blade, but he saw a health point tick away regardless. "Quit poking holes in my suit!" He called to his double. The Gemini did not answer, nor did it look amused any more.

Teselmar knew how to play the waiting game if he had to. He slowly circled the monster, giving himself time to get a skosh of energy back. "Hey, I gotta say, and I'm sure you get this a lot, but you're an incredibly good looking guy." Teselmar was a bit unnerved to see the look on the face staring back at him. Disdain, and... fear? He wasn't quite sure.

The Gemini was gritting its teeth, his eyes darting back and forth. Teselmar knew that behavior; it was the same way that he looked for escapes Only, this NPC had none. It was more than a bit unnerving, knowing that it was reacting just like he would in this scenario as well. Morbid thoughts crossed his mind, and he did his best to get rid of them. Focus on the matter at hand, Martin. Put this guy to bed, and you're a step closer to going home yourself.

Teselmar had enough energy back now to perform Rip Ravine again. It wasn't going to win him any style awards, but it was his most cost effective multi-hit attack. His blade glowed with emerald power, and he surged forward, attempting to score another two slashes against his opponent. Sorry buddy, it's you or me. He found himself feeling a bit sorry for the Gemini.

ID# 44066 results: Battle: 2+1=3 (miss)

This time, it was his turn to look surprised, as the Gemini blocked his two strikes, apparently learning from its previous mistakes. Teselmar hoped he'd still be able to pull out a victory.

The Gemini had locked blades with Teselmar, and was now bouncing backwards, preparing its own version of Rip Ravine once more. The two of them seemed to be locked in a battle with no easy end in sight.

The strikes were barely batted aside by Teselmar, who knew they were coming and still had a hard time blocking them. The pair locked eyes, which Teselmar immediately recognized as a mistake. Those eyes were too familiar, too much like his own.

Teselmar had one last Rip Ravine in his tank before he'd have to go back to using Linears again. He repeated the charging motion, letting light dance along the blade as it arced out twice across the midsection of the Gemini.

ID# 44068 results: Battle: 10 (Perfect crit!)

The Gemini must not have seen the blade coming, or else Teselmar had executed the technique flawlessly. Either way, the blade lashed out once, twice, then angry red lines erupted across the Gemini's torso. Teselmar couldn't meet its gaze, but he caught a glimpse of its face. It was... smiling? Like the person it took its face from, perhaps the Gemini enjoyed the thrill of danger as well?

The Gemini decided that mimicry was what it was going to stick with, and so it channeled the last of its energy into a Rip Ravine attack. Its blade glowed cerulean as it attempted the exact same maneuver.

But Teselmar had learned. Stepping inside the Gemini's guard, he caught the creature's sword with the tip of his blade, and flicked it into the air. It landed a few feet away, point in the ground. Teselmar muttered, "I know how much that sucks. Sorry."

Teselmar settled into a thrusting stance with his rapier, and got ready to lash out at the Gemini with a Linear. The battle could be won in a few moves now, fewer if he was fortunate.

ID# 44070 results: Battle: 4+1=5 (miss)

But the Gemini was full of surprises, leaping over his thrust to roll across the ground and grab its blade. Teselmar almost felt a stirring of pride for the monster that wore his face. "Nice moves."

Teselmar saw the Gemini raise its blade, almost saluting him as it drew to eye level. Then the Linear skill carried the Gemini's blade forward, intending to pierce Teselmar's ribcage with its momentum.

But Teselmar moved with precision, tilting his blade to intercept his opponent's, and angling the blow away from himself.
