COMPLETE! [SP-F2] Going Batty <<Let There Be Light>>

Recommended Posts

Teselmar frowned at the darkness that loomed before him. The cave was wide mouthed, and he couldn't see past the entrance. The NPC woman who had given him the quest was still pacing nervously outside the cave, and even if the woman and her child weren't real, he didn't feel like walking away from her plight.

"Play on my emotions, why dontcha..." He muttered at the sky. Turning with a sigh, Teselmar entered the cave to find a little girl. The pitch blackness enveloped him, and he could only see a few feet in front of him, at best. Putting his hand against the wall to maintain his balance, he made his way into the cave proper.

Moving along through the cave, Teselmar noticed that it was far deeper than he had anticipated. The inky darkness would make fighting a chore, and he had the funny feeling that such a disadvantage would come into play eventually. Kayaba was sneaky like that. He felt like he was entering a decently sized cavern within the cave system, when he heard the first screech. Ah. That would be the sneaky thing I was talking about...

Before Teselmar's eyes, barely visible in the low light, two Giant Bats peeled off of the cavern roof and flung themselves at him. Taken by surprise, Teselmar gasped sharply as they sunk their fangs into him, leaving brightly glowing red spots on his arm and hand. Batting them aside (pun intended), he drew his rapier. Crucible rang from its sheath as he charged his sword art, Sweep. The cave was illuminated with the violet light of his attack, and he swept the blade across them twice. They screeched again, flying out of range of a third strike.

Another round of attacks was headed his way, and Teselmar knew he had to react. The pair of bat monsters snapped at him, their attacks barely missing him as he weaved in the dark. He swiped at them again with his thin blade, but the darkness confounded his efforts. The cave walls were his only constant, but it made it difficult to maneuver his weapon.

The bats circled for another pass, their fangs gleaming in the dimly lit space. Teselmar braced himself, blocking the attacks with his rapier. Swatting the flying rodents' fangs with his sword, he rolled to one side of the cavern, getting ready to counter attack. Utilizing the Streak sword art, he quickly blazed a line across their faces. The giant bats positively howled in fury.

Teselmar fended off the monsters as best he could, looking for a way to get deeper into the cave. The end of the quest was surely further inside. He took a wild stab at one of the bats, buts its wing blocked the blow with a thud. He turned and withdrew deeper into the cave, though their fangs caught him again as he moved. His tactical vest caught most of the damage, but their fangs still did damage.

Teselmar was now within the true heart of the cavern. He was unable to see much of anything in the jet black shade, and the bats' attacks caught him off guard again. Striking him in the torso, he grunted, twisting away. They had struck deeply again... Summoning his willpower, Teselmar activated his Disguise skill. For a moment, he appeared to the bats like a bigger, meaner version of themselves. They hesitated in their follow up, and that's when he struck. His vest carried a property of light momentum, allowing him to bounce back more accurately from his misses. This let him maneuver his blade into a sword art, another Streak. It wasn't the most powerful technique, but it was a hit nonetheless.

The bats were none too pleased at the little trick he'd pulled, and they screamed in rage. Their wings battered at him, and he took a bit of damage. Fortunately, that also brought them into range of another sword art. Seeing an opportunity to take one out of the fight, Teselmar expended all of his energy on an Accel Stab attack. The first Giant Bat was run through the torso three times, screeching as it brightened the cavern with a hail of pixels. It exploded, leaving its partner alone to carry on the fight. "Suck on that, leather faced freak."

Teselmar was spent, his lungs heaving as he turned to face the remaining bat. It was a struggle to lift his blade with no energy, but he managed to score a shallow blow on the monster regardless. Even though the cut was not very deep, Crucible's blade was sharp enough that it did a fair amount of damage any way. The bat got up in his face, sinking its fangs into his clavicle. The blow would have killed him instantly a few levels ago. But his armored vest stopped all but the tips of its teeth, and without the help of its friend, the bat couldn't overload Teselmar's defenses on its own. "Surprise, #!$%."

He knew that being this low on energy would eventually be his downfall, so Teselmar decided to play it safe and recover. Ducking behind a stalagmite, he saw a few shafts of sunlight streaming down from a hole high in the ceiling. It wasn't bright enough to mitigate the disadvantage of poor vision, but it was enough to let him see the horrifying details of the bat's face. Oozing saliva dripped off of its six inch fangs, and tremendous jet black wings beat the air as it streaked towards him. He rolled away as it smashed the rocky protrusion, where he would have been smashed into the cave wall had he not moved.

Teselmar turned from his tactical retreat, facing the creature. It was heading right for him, teeth glinting in the dim cave light. His rapier glowed vibrantly as he charged a sword art, glad that he'd saved his energy previously. Rip Ravine, an old favorite, flashed out in a V pattern, and slashed through the monster's flesh. The bat howled, then fell into three pieces as it dissipated into light particles. Teselmar sighed, thankful that he had slain the foul bat. "Good night, ugly s.o.b..."

The cave was still dark and damp, as Teselmar found out when he sat down. *sigh*... great... He rested for a moment, intending to get some of his energy and HP back. Now that the main threat of the Quest had been dealt with, hopefully the rest of this affair would be a quiet one. His thoughts drifted, as they so often did, to Opal. Wonder where she is right now?

Teselmar rose, and began to stretch his limbs. That fight had taken a bit out of him, but he thought for a moment on how strong he'd recently become. Not like I've gotten any physically stronger, being that I'm all ones and zeroes at the moment... but my level has risen tenfold since I started out. I need to keep it up, so I can join the others on the front lines, and wrap this whole shebang up...

He swished Crucible through the air in a few practice strikes. The System made it easier for him to be an expert with his weapon, but good old fashioned combat training out in the real world was good for his mind. Sure, his punches and grapples might not have much of an effect on a giant bat monster, but the ability to think on his feet and stay alert when in danger was worth its weight in gold.

Feeling re-energized from his rest, Teselmar held his blade in front of him to ward off any incoming surprises, and ventured once more into the heart of the cave. As he strayed farther and farther from the light, he could barely see anything by which to guide his steps. Relying once more on the wall of the cave for help, he progressed further and further into the cavern.

Just when he was thinking about giving up and going back, he heard a faint crying and sniffling coming from the back of the cave. "Oh thank God, I've been looking for-" As soon as he spoke, Teselmar heard a deep pitched screech, and felt the wind from a pair of massive wings. Uh oh...

The Alpha Bat was coming towards him, glowing cave moss from the final chamber of the cavern hideously illuminating its slavering face. It snapped at Teselmar as he dove aside, and charged his blade with light once more. Rip Ravine activated as he sliced twice, curving the arc of his thin sword as he pivoted. The Alpha let out a piercing wail, and turned to face him once again.

The Alpha Bat swung around, coming in for another pass. Teselmar raised his blade to stab out at the creature, but slipped on a patch of moss. His strike went wide, and the humongous creature whacked him in the face with a wing, sending him heartily into the cave wall. "Unff!" Teselmar regained his footing, staggering to his feet. Not the best of results...

The fight with the flying rodent of unusual size was fierce, as it snapped its fangs again and again at Teselmar. Parrying and dodging as best as he could, he gathered his focus before moving forward to disrupt the monster's momentum. Pretty sure Batman would have been scared of you, big fella... Teselmar charged a sword art as he dashed forward, and Accel Stab hit the Alpha three times in the center mass. It screeched, and the fencer watched his opponent's life bar drop to the red.

The Alpha Bat was on its last legs- err, wings, and it got aggressive in its desperation. It dove towards him, rushing to sink its fangs into his flesh. It blinded his field of view with its wings, and bit down on his shoulder. The incisors barely pierced his vest, but the Bat had larger problems.

In its haste to drink Teselmar's blood, the demonic looking creature didn't see him simply slide the tip of his blade forward. The Bat's own momentum carried it into the blade, impaling it clean through. With a keening wail, it dissipated into a shower of pixels and Col.

Teselmar rested his back against the cave wall, having seemingly conquered every challenge that this cave had to throw at him. He heard the mewling, tearful cries of a small child once again, coming from the back of the cave. He sighed, sheathing his rapier and getting back on his feet properly. The quest marker still blinked upon his HUD, indicating the child as the objective. "Okay, let's put this quest to bed."

Teselmar searched high and low, trying to locate the source of the crying. It sounded like the girl was close, very close. Finally, he rounded a corner to a nook in the very back of the cavern, and found the NPC girl. She was sitting on the cave floor, crying softly. "The bats... the bats, are they gone...?" She asked, looking terrified. Teselmar bent down, smiling at the little girl. "Yep, no more bats. Come on, let's get you out of here."

Teselmar picked the little girl up, holding her in his arms. Turning back since there was nowhere left to go, he began making his way towards the entrance. His thoughts grew sentimental as he held the girl close, still shaking and teary-eyed. Would he ever have the chance to have kids? Probably not. In all likelihood, his body would give out before they cleared this crazy game. Too many variables. But still... his thoughts turned to Opal once again, and he smiled in the darkness.
