[SP-F1] Gathering and Hunting Part 1 - Complete

Recommended Posts

It was the start of yet another day in Kranzer's life here on the first floor. Once more it found him out in the vast fields of grass that dominated the floor save for the Town of Beginnings and the various forests that dotted the floor. The young man crouched low as he searched through a small patch of grass for anything that could be considered a piece of material suitable for crafting. It had quickly become apparent to him that the items were another source of currency here on SAO and it never hurt to have a nice little stash for those times when he needed something. Be it a piece of equipment or an item that would be used to save the life of one of his party members. He continued searching but he realized it was in vain as so far it had produced no results. That's when he heard it. A <<Frenzied Boar>> has spawned a short distance away but so far it hadn't noticed him. Fear caused his abdomen to tighten in expectation as he turned to flee. Kranzer took one step before his body froze. He was doing it again. Running away like all the other times. What danger was there with a single one? After all he'd managed to take a few down before. Granted that had been with the help of Dynaon.

Could he do it on his own? Every fiber in his being told him to run. Run far away and get away from the thing and head for the gates. If he did that though nothing would change. He'd been unable to forge a path of his own for the better part of his life, but now he had some measure of strength. The ability to change things with his own hands... and that path would start here.

There was a slight shake to his body as he tried to figure out which path he should take. A subtle tremor that spread throughout his muscles and was most evident in his shoulders. However, the instant Kranzer chose to stand his ground the shaking ceased. The young man turned around and the gentle breeze that folded the grass over got caught up in his coat and caused the tail to billow up behind him in a dramatic fashion. A slight ring pierced the air as his dagger was pulled free from its sheath and he started to charge forward. The blade's black edge was tinged in a lavender glow that left a feint trail through the air as he passed by. It was held in a forward grip as he kept it low to his right side and his elbow tucked in to provide more oomph when he finally thrust it forward with every intention of piercing it through the <<Frenzied Boar's>> flesh. Time seemed to slow down as he rushed forward. Grass and dirt was kicked up as his boots struck the ground. His body hunched forward ever so slightly as he put his all behind this initial strike.

Almost willing the beast to perish beneath the deadly blade's kiss. That dark edge would be lined in crimson blood once he was done with it. That is if his Sword Art managed to connect with it successfully. Kranzer's mouth opened in a silent scream as he felt both anxious and frightened as his sudden decision to stand his ground and fight.

His strikes were wide though so the <<Frenzied Boar>> managed to escape without so much as a scratch. Kranzer gritted his teeth as he tried to jump to the side. However, he was much too slow and the beast's tusks slammed into his side. Despite that his HP gauge only decreased by a small portion. A fact that caused his eyes to grow wide but he quickly realized it was due to the coat he'd had made recently. A nervous laugh escaped him at that moment as he regained his balance. This fight was far from over.

Kranzer cursed his luck as he quickly circled around the beast to throw off its attempt to get in a quick charge. His intent wasn't to disengage the <<Frenzied Boar>>. Far from it actually. By making it turn around it robbed the beast of its momentum. He also needed to think and wait for his energy to replenish enough to unleash another Sword Art. When it finally refilled though a slight smirk appeared upon his face as that telltale glow was emitted from his blade that marked the initial stage of a Sword Art being unleashed. Once more he ran in with his dagger at the ready only to unleash it once more with a shout.

The dagger struck true as the first strike cut a diagonal line across the <<Frenzied Boar's>> throat. The second strike pierced its skull directly between its eyes where his dagger stayed as his brown-eyed gaze grew wide with disbelief. Red flakes flowed off the wounds which represented blood in SAO. At first Kranzer didn't know if he'd slain the beast or not. It wasn't until its body broke apart into quite a few blue particles that Kranzer allowed himself a moment to take a deep breath before a soft sigh flowed from between his lips. He did it... never mind the fact that the beast was weaker than the others, he'd managed to take it down all by himself.

It was a major accomplishment for Kranzer and one he wouldn't soon forget.

Kranzer quickly checked his immediate surroundings for any other beasts that might have wandered into the area or spawned in unexpectedly. When he didn't see anything though he let out a sigh of relief. His body shook visibly as he collapsed to his knees. "That was.. intense," he muttered as he took the time to check the small window that had popped up. Those dark brows arched as his finger hovered over the information that revealed that he'd gotten an uncommon item. He didn't feel the immediate need to check out the specifics of it so he simply accepted it for the time being. From there he took a look at his HP gauge and grinned when he noticed that it had already refilled to max. His energy gauge though, the small blue bar that resided beneath the green health bar, was only a third of the way refilled. He grumbled slightly but there wasn't anything he could do about it.

For now he would be safer simply searching for stuff to gather while he waited for his energy to replenish fully. He scoured the immediate area but to no avail.  It was looking like he'd need to head deeper into the fields and farther from the town's gate. A prospect that seemed to weigh his feet down with each step he took.

Kranzer kept walking for a short while until he stepped into a small section of the plains that had a rather large concentration of small stones scattered about. "Huh," he muttered as his gaze shifted about the area. There weren't any beasts in the area so that was a good thing. Several minutes were spent with the young man simply listening and watching to seek out anyone else who might be trying to hide in the area. Once he was finally realized that he was in fact alone out here he turned around and picked up one of the smaller pebbles. He turned it over in his hand a few times to check it out before he finally opened the interaction menu and hit <<Extract>. To his dismay the menu flashed red which instantly alerted him to his failure. He made a tsk noise and dropped the pebble even as it vanished from sight.

Kranzer continued to sift through the grass. The blue gauge continued to refill until it was completely full. Now that he was fully recovered from the last fight he was more than ready to pick a fight with another beast but not before he was done here. When his hands closed around a small stone he pulled it out to get a better look. The stone vanished and was promptly replaced with a small sphere which he quickly identified as a piece of material. Finally he'd found one and it was only his second attempt to this day was at least getting off to a good start. "Good," he muttered as he stood up and started to walk farther out in the field towards a copse of trees off in the distance. He could see another <<Boar>> off in the distance and his blade was already free of its sheath and held at the ready before he even came within striking distance.

The edge of his dagger started to glow as he prepared to unleash a Sword Art on the unsuspecting <<Boar's>> back. Kranzer ran in but this time his jaw was set and he didn't offer a battle cry. This time he just wanted to strike it fast and hard and see that it died long before it had a chance to go on the offensive. Kranzer also didn't want to risk running low on energy. If that happened he'd have to either try to go on the defensive until he had enough energy to activate his Sword Art or just attack with his dagger normally. Which usually wasn't preferred. However, in the name of survival he would just have to do whatever was necessary to see that he did survive. The instant he was behind the <<Boar>> his dagger was thrust forward with a trail of lavender light left in its wake.

His dagger went wide as the <<Boar>> was startled and stumbled off to the right. It was so shocked as it tried to spin around that it tumbled over and hit the ground hard. Kranzer's teeth gritted together as he tightened the grip upon his dagger's hilt. He failed to make the first strike in combat, but the <<Boar>> had completely flubbed its attack as well so it was still anyone's game at this point.

Kranzer knew he couldn't afford to miss again. It just wouldn't go well at all if he had to wait for his energy to be restored enough to use the only Sword Art he had available. It wasn't that he didn't have options. Far from it in fact. The real issue was that he just didn't have enough energy to activate the other tier one techniques that his weapon skill gave him access too. Lavender light danced along the edge of his blade once more. This battle had to end with this next strike and the young man knew it. The hilt was grasped with one hand over the other. Ever bit of the ferocity he felt stir within his body was poured into that attack. Kranzer could only hope that it would be enough. The dagger struck out twice in rapid succession as he unleashed his favored attack.

The first strike hit the <<Boar>> in the side and it opened a huge gash that allowed the blood to gush out. The follow of struck occurred as Kranzer thrust his blade forward and it sank cleanly into the <<Boar's>> neck. The beast burst apart in a dazzling display of blue shards that faded. Only Kranzer's memory of the confrontation marked the beast's passing from this world. It was true that it was nothing more than data but the same held true for his own body. That line of thinking paved the way for a very dangerous line of thinking so he quickly pushed the thought aside and simply accepted what he'd gained from the fight and sat down to take a breather.

Once he'd regained his breath his energy gauge refilled roughly one third of the way. It certainly wasn't being restored fast enough for his liking. As much as he hated to admit it perhaps Dynaon's constant claims that Kranzer just needs to get more levels was in fact an accurate estimate. If he had more levels he'd have more energy. With more energy he'd last longer in a battle. It was kind of like a dual edged sword. The higher his level he was the more energy he'd have but it also meant he'd need to fight increasingly difficult opponents. For now though there was little he could do about it outside of just waiting until his energy was back to full. Until then he'd keep doing what he did after the last boar he fought against. Kranzer started to search through the area and only paused when he thought he heard howling off in the distance. Slowly he shook his head and dismissed it as nothing more than his imagination playing tricks on him. He sorted through a pile of stones until the last one yielded the object he sought.

Just after he felt the joy of success a sudden sense of dread settled over Kranzer as he heard those all too familiar howls sounding off somewhere in the distance. "No, it can't be," he muttered as he turned around and shielded his eyes from the sun. It didn't take long but soon he saw two <<Dire Wolves>> off in the distance as they headed his way. Had they already gotten his scent so fast? This just wasn't possible! Kranzer grumbled as he stood up and started to run away while keeping the city wall on his left side. He wanted to keep it in sight in case he needed to make a made dash for the gates. Once he'd given the two beasts the slip he sat down upon the ground with a huff as he tried to catch his breath. Idly he picked up a rock and interacted with the menu and couldn't help but stare when he was presented with a successful extraction.

Kranzer leaned back as he waited in silence he'd just put the item away from his last attempt and he wanted to make sure those two wolves weren't trying to sneak up on him. He didn't hear anything moving about and he most certainly didn't hear those howls. Once he was confident he was truly alone in the area he started to relax a little. There was as mall copse of trees nearby that littered the outer edge of a forest. In truth it wasn't necessarily a good idea to get too close to it but he figured the smaller patch of trees weren't connected to the main forest and should be a little safer. Kranzer walked over to one of the trees and ran his hand down the rough bark that ran down the tree's exterior. A small vine had worked its way up the side of it and that is what drew the young man's attention. However, as he checked it over he didn't find anything of use. Which was regrettable.

Over all it was a rather nice day. A gentle breeze flowed through the branches which made the leaves rustle. The tree's canopy provided some refuge from the sun which had started to to dip into its eventual plunge towards the western horizon which heralded the night to come. The young man took a step back and lifted his gaze towards the tree's lower branches as he afforded himself a momentary break from the task at hand. With a running start Kranzer went up from the bottom of the tree and ran up it several steps before he kicked off and grabbed hold of the lowest branch. With a little bit of effort he pulled himself up and vanished into the leaves. With a soft sigh he laid back against the branch and allowed his eyes to close as a light slumber overcame him. It wasn't until he heard voices below that his eyes snapped open. He didn't say anything. Heck he didn't even move. Kranzer just laid still as he listened to them. There were two in total and one of them spoke about losing the trail of something. Kranzer pondered if they were looking for something but opted not to risk exposing his presence. The last thing he needed was to startle someone and get mixed up with a beast.

After a while the sound of their soft footsteps on the grass grew more distant along with their voices. Once they were gone Kranzer remained hidden within the branches for several more moments before he finally rolled off the branch and landed on the ground below. He was just starting to stand up when a <<Frenzied Boar>> came rushing out of the nearby bushes and charged right at him. Kranzer's eyes widened as he quickly unsheathed his dagger and brought it up to defend himself. Lavender light flowed over the blade's edge as he activated one of his Sword Arts. The beast charged forward with every intent to thrust its tusks into Kranzer's stomach. As the beast closed in though the young man leaped back at the last second. The beast's forward momentum carried it right by Kranzer but not before his dagger struck out twice in rapid succession. The first strike hit its neck in a devastating blow with the second being dragged along its side. The beast walked forward two steps before its body burst into a cloud of blue shards.

Kranzer let out a sigh of relief as he slowly stood up. The edge of his coat was drawn back so he could return his dagger to its sheath. It would appear that he had gained a decent grasp on how to battle at least. He was truly grateful for the dagger as well. Without it these battles wouldn't be quite so easily won.

The last remnants of the beast faded and the young man let out a sigh of relief. To think that only a short while ago this would have sent him running for the hills. A slow smile spread across his face as he walked back over towards one of the trees. This time he crouched down to get a better look at the moss that grew around the tree's base. Idly he pondered if there was anything there that he could use. "Only one way to find out," he muttered as he reached forward and tapped it with his finger. When the interaction menu popped up Kranzer was mildly surprised. The description went into detail about how moss was a common ingredient for alchemy but he largely ignored that and simply pressed the option to try and extract something from it. The menu vanished and the item appeared in the palm of his hand. "Well huh," he muttered as he put the item away.

He was so surprised in his success that he didn't notice that another <<Frenzied Boar>> has sauntered into the area. At first anyway. The beast's snort is what first tipped him off and the sound of its hooves digging into the ground as it charged him was the second sign. His hand immediately brushed the edge of his coat aside as he gripped the hilt of his dagger and brought it forth. The blade's dark edge was briefly illuminated with a lavender glow as Kranzer prepared to unleash Side Bite upon this beast as well. If it wanted to join its friend then so be it. Idly he pondered over when he'd turned into such a person that would even think that. The beast charged forward and Kranzer moved to meet its charge in a lowered stance so he could leap to the side when necessary.

As he moved though his boot got caught on a root and he fell right into the beast's charge. He got hit hard. The force of the impact sent him flying back into the tree. Kranzer growled lightly as fear started to take hold. A quick look at his HP gauge revealed that he'd taken minimal damage at least. He was very thankful for the coat that he'd had commissioned as it had just earned every last material he put into it. Although with his attack missing its mark like that the only thing he'd accomplished here was wasting his energy.

He quickly got back on his feet as the beast turned about for another attack. His earlier success now meant nothing after that little blunder. Briefly his gaze shifted to see what he'd tripped over and he wanted to slap himself when he saw the root. Red clashed against his dark clothing where those tusks tore at his flesh. A slight grimace distorted Kranzer's features as he lifted his dagger and the blade radiated a lavender light as he expended the rest of his energy to unleash another Sword Art in the hope of ending this with one strike. The beast's hoof scratched at the ground as if to call the young man forward. Kranzer's eyes narrowed but he didn't turn away. As the beast charged Kranzer pushed off the ball of his foot and charged forward with his blade at the ready.

With a shout Kranzer ran forward. A trail of light flowed in the wake of his blade as he quickly sidestepped just in time to let the beast's charge carry it on his right side. The blade struck out twice as he cleaved clear through the beast's flesh. He slid to a stop with his blade held high and his gaze lowered to the ground. The sound of the beast's body breaking up as it died reached his ears and he let out the breath that he'd been holding the entire time.

As he stood up he watched as his HP Gauge filled completely now that he was no longer in the heat of combat. The blue bar that represented his energy though had been completely depleted and had just refilled one third of the way. With no desire of being drawn into a confrontation without the necessary energy to activate his Sword Art, Kranzer quickly bid the small copse of trees farewell and ran out into the open grass covered field so he could have a better view of his surroundings. The soft howls only prompted him to keep running though and once they finally died off in the distance he finally stopped. His chest rose and fell as he breathed heavily from the effort. "Just freaking great.. I think they're hunting me or something," he muttered. Soon he'd have to do something about that. Although it may be best to bring along some back up as he'd never faced one of the wolves before so he had no way of gauging its strength in comparison to his own.

Suddenly he stood up straight as his eyes tracked the sun's progress through the sky. He'd already lost some light and he had to silently curse his decision to doze off in that tree. How long was he out? The sun was already most of the way through its daily journey which meant he'd need to be returning to the town soon. Being stuck out here with the beasts that stalked the night was not a pleasant thought. However, he still had some time and he wasn't too far off from the gate as it was. So he simply started to look around the area for some more materials.Which turned out to be nothing more than a waste of time when he failed to discover anything.

He didn't let that failure discourage him though. His brown-eyed gaze shifted shifted along the distant terrain back towards the way he'd arrived from. Last thing he needed was to grow complacent again like he had with those boars. These <<Dire Wolves>> might be a lot stronger than them and he may not be as fortunate if they attacked. His armor had saved his life quite a number of times but that could only carry him so far. Nothing lurked off in the distance in any direction he looked. There was a boar off in the distance but it didn't seem to have any interest in Kranzer so he simply ignored it for now. That didn't mean he took his attention off of it though, far from it actually. For now he crouched down and started to sift through the grass and actually managed to find something this time. "Now that's what I'm talking about," he said with a grin.

With the time that had passed it saw that blue gauge below his health bar refilled completely. With that done his gaze settled fully upon that <<Frenzied Boar>> that roamed off in the distance. His brow furrowed as he pondered on if he should go and take it on or not. One look at the darkening sky revealed that he should have enough time so long as he didn't mess up too bad and would still be able to make it back to the town gates before it got too dark. So with a shrug he kicked off in a sprint. The tail of his coat fluttered out behind his back as he ran. His right hand crossed over his body and took a firm hold of the dagger's hilt before it was pulled free of its scabbard. The slight ring of steel that resonated off of the newly drawn blade had grown to offer some measure of comfort within the young man. In truth that was a rather disturbing thought the more the considered it so for the moment he pushed that thought from his mind.

Lavender light danced along the blade's dark edge as he closed the remaining distance and struck out. The beast had heard his approach and turned in an attempt to get lined up for a charge. Despite the forewarning the beast had it was just simply overwhelmed. It was halfway through its turn when the young man flew by. Kranzer dragged his feet as he slid across the ground. One hand reached down as he pivoted around before he finally slid to a stop. His dagger was held low and behind his body. As his gaze rose he was shocked to see the beast fell to the ground in two pieces rather than one full body. Kranzer's jaw dropped as it broke apart in a burst of blue shards and the window popped up to show him what he'd earned. His eyebrows rose when he saw that he'd gotten another uncommon item. He hummed lightly as he accepted the items without paying too much attention to what it was just yet. This was proving to be a rather successful day so far.

Kranzer just couldn't help but smile as he did a quick check on everything he'd found so far. Eight materials that could be used for crafting one item of good quality and then two items of uncommon quality. He simply shook his head as he closed the menu and took stock of the situation at hand. He didn't see any other monsters in the general area which was good. He could unleash Side Bite once more with the energy he had left. One glance at that blue bar was all the proof he needed for that. Though if he missed then he'd have to wait to be able to use it again, and if his fight with that boar earlier was any indication he could and very well may miss if he tried to focus ending it with a single blow. So for the time being it was back to trying to gather supplies from the local environment. Kranzer walked over and snatched a small stone off the ground and navigated his way through the interaction interface. The menu vanished and he chat the stone aside with a slight frown. Kranzer shook off the feeling of disappointment. He'd found too much to be brought down by this.

It took him a few moments before he found another stone. Once he had it in hand he simply stared at it for several moments before he finally tapped. The interaction menu popped up with the general description for the item and what its uses were. Per usual Kranzer ignored that information and simply hit <<Extract>> only to be met with failure once more. The beginning of a frown tugged at the edge of his lips as he cast the stone aside. Perhaps it was time to end his day on that note. A quick glance towards the sky revealed that was actually a wise plan of action. While he was walking back towards the main gate that would lead him into the Town of Beginnings Kranzer came across another <<Frenzied Boar>> that seemed content on the grass it currently bit at. His brow furrowed as he looked up at the sky again. Did he have enough time to deal with one more before retiring for the night?
