[SP-F1]Making money by selling, not stealing <<earning a living>>

Recommended Posts

Haruko wandered around the market square of the starter town with a frown, looking around from store to store. "sure is a lot of things being sold 'round here. I wonder..." The girl said with a grin. She wasn't good at video games, she had never handled a sword in her life, and her skills in a fist fight were "passable." But there was one thing that Haruko had been good at since birth, and that was freeing losers from their precious valuables. Haruko had no idea if she needed a thief skill to do that in this world, or something, but given how easy it was to interact with people, she figured it couldn't hurt to try it the old-fashioned way...

"It was all going so well..." Haruko thought, hanging by the back of her shirt as the very large, and very angry... she had thought it was an NPC, but perhaps a player? Looked her in the eyes, as she hung from his very large hand. How was she supposed to know the big lug paid so much attention to his loose pockets? meanwhile she was just hoping the guy would let her down before her shirt started to rip at the front... she didn't know how durable video-game clothing was, but she figured her Hakama wasn't exactly made for hanging like this.
"Trying to steal from my pockets, were ya? the man asked with more than a trace of anger in his eyes.
"Look, I'm sorry, alright!" Haruko snapped back, before taking a breath. she was already in trouble, she probably didn't need to get into even more. "I'm just looking for a way to get a living around here, and..."
The man interrupted her. "A way to get a living, huh?" The man asked, before suddenly walking away, Haruko still hanging from his massive arms.
"H-hey, where are you taking me?"

This guy was big. his hair was a grizzled brown, his paunch betrayed a certain weight, and the sword by his side suggested he meant business when he wanted to. what was most impressive was his massive arms. they were about as big as Haruko's torso, and even carrying her one-handed, they didn't even falter once as he hauled her halfway across town to some tiny wooden building. "H-hey, seriously, where are you taking me?!" Haruko stated with a worried glance. This wasn't one of those types of perverts... right? Please?

The tan-skinned man opened the door, and Haruko was surprised to find herself in a shop. "Wh-what?" she stated with a worried glance, looking around. Oh, she got it. The guy was obviously smitten with her amazing looks, and wanted to buy her something nice to gain her affection. well, she didn't mind using the dope-

Haruko's train of thought was very suddenly interrupted as a crumpled up apron hit her square in the face.

"Instead of reporting this incident to the necessary people... you're going to work, little lady." The man stated with narrowed eyebrows. "Put on that apron, follow me to the back, and I'll get you stocking shelves." he stated bluntly.

Haruko glared at the guy. "I don't work for free. You want me to do that? Pay me." She stated with a glare, hoping to tick off the man. that way, she'd get kicked out, the authorities would probably side with the helpless-looking girl over the angry guy, and...

To her surprise, the guy just sighed. "Listen... for players, shops are free to open. It takes a bit of doing, and a lot of work, but if you're willing to put in the effort to work for a little while... I'll show you how to become my best competition. That payment enough for you?" The guy asked.

Haruko's eyes widened. "Uhm... well..." She floundered, not entirely sure how to respond. It would be useful to have a free shop. She might even be able to make a lot of money off of it with her skills...
After a moment of trying and failing to find the right words, she finally tied on the apron.

"place those potions on the shelf here. make sure to place them firmly in the plastic base - the shelf isn't too firm, so when someone slams the door, and the shelf shakes, one of 'em can drop on the floor if we're not careful..." the man instructed her, as Haruko struggled with the box. No wonder the guy was ripped. She wasn't expecting each health potion to weight, like, a couple pounds. She definitely wasn't expecting to be hauling boxes with quantities of a hundred either. Her tiny arms barely managed to hold the stupid crate, shaking with weakness.
"Uhh, don't you have, like, a cart for these or something?" Haruko asked, glancing back at the door.
"Cart? Oh, I forgot, you're probably not used to the weight. sorry." the man said with an earnest grin.
"How did you forget I'm not also a 10-thousand foot tall behemoth?" Haruko thought to herself.

Haruko was kept busy with work from the guy - ferrying health potions to certain spots, setting up teleportation crystals, going over order receipts... as a woman who'd never worked in anything legal for a single day of her life, she was surprised by just how tough this whole running a shop thing was. She assumed the majority of it was spent sitting bored in front of the counter...

"Haruko... I need to leave the shop for a couple minutes. watch the counter, will ya?"

Haruko raised an eyebrow at this, heading behind the counter warily. Was he really just leaving her alone in this shop?
