[SP-F1] <<Earning a Living>> The art of life (Alchemist)

Recommended Posts

The flower slowly withered away before bursting into particles in Zamharuun's hand. "Life is born... Life dies". He whispered to the thin air, slowly watching the particles dissipate. He was lay down on the grasslands of the first floor, staring into the sky. This was his usual routine, the last time he had been to the Town of Beginnings was a while ago, actually since the catastrophe happened. Zamharuun knew he didn't fit in there so stayed well away, spending his time in the rural areas of the first floor. Opening up his inventory he studied the quest he had accepted before leaving, an NPC had given it to him although he wasn't sure why. The text read <How to become a botanist>. The black haired player scanned it before closing it again. He had little interest in training but was always fond of the meaning behind life itself.

Slowly rising to his feet he glanced around. The trees whistled and the birds chirped, the player closed his eyes and listened to it for a moment, taking a deep breath in. Glancing across the fields he sighted several boars, and quickly turned away his cloak flying behind him. "Where do I find life?" He would question, once again whispering to nothing. Noticing another patch of flowers he approached.

Zamharuun crouched down and carefully picked one of the flowers. It came up as a material he could use. "How interesting." The flower was completely white, the complete opposite to his own eye color. He blinked a few times before depositing it into his inventory. Zamharuun looked upwards, a forest lay a few miles north. "Perhaps I can find what I need there..." His speech was slow and quiet, his eyes seemed to both have no life and a burning passion in at the same time. Zamharuun was completely silent as he approached the forest. Only the sound of the wind rustling the grass could be heard with each step taken. His cloak billowing in the wind.

As Zamharuun approached the forests edge he noticed an array of plants aligning it. He carefully picked up one of the nearest flowers, this one a red poppy that send a wave of nostalgia through him. It lasted only a few moments as he plucked it and soon broke into many particles. "I see, I should not waste anymore time here." Looking forward the forest was open, leaf litter scattered the floor, his silent footsteps soon made light scarping sounds as they pressed into the dirt.

As the player walked through the forest he kept an eye out for any sign of life. He knew something wasn't right with him deep down. It was the reason he tried to avoid people. Towards the middle of the forest the clearing widened to a large oak tree. Several varieties of mushroom infested the trunk. Once again he selected one at random, "Seems this will do." Zamharuun's voice was cold and sad. "What is the point to this?" He grabbed his wrist and felt a pulse running through his body. After gripping hard enough to put himself in pain the spearman managed to suppress the anger building up inside of him, he had the moments often and was unsure what they were.

Zamahruun looked down at the mushroom he had just picked up and reached out for a second. As his hand closed around it, the fungus shot out several green spores. He raised his hand quickly to his mouth and coughed several times harshly. Spinning around he lent against a tree and threw up. The spear user began crying, mumbling under his breath "Why..." over and over. No one was going to come, no body even knew who he was.

The sound of running water attracted Zamharuun's attention. "A river?" He moved between the trees at walking pace, up ahead the forest opened into a large glade, a waterfall and some rapids cut through the land. Zamharuun noticed an Elk of some sorts drinking from a clear spot. Mimicking it's behavior the spear man crouched down and pooled out some water in a cooler spot. Reeds covered the banks although none which stood out as materials he could use.

As Zamharuun continued down the river a thunderstorm brewed over the grassland of the first floor. He held out his hand and watched as the rain pattered against it, breaking apart. The rain picked up and the sound of thunder caused a flock of birds to scatter from their trees. The spear user watched as they flew away, up to the higher floors of Aincrad. "Life..." This is what he muttered to himself all the time, he could not get his head around why creatures strive to live and suffer when death awaited them in the end. "The meaning of life is death". There was no doubt in his voice as he said that to himself, nor was he preaching it to anyone. He continued walking along the river, the storm swirling around him.

The storm continued as he walked, the ground became moist and his feet sank into the soil slightly. Zamharuun noted the harsh conditions, deciding there was no where to gather materials in the rain he headed for the shelter of the forest. The cold water soaked his cloak and other clothes but spending most the months out on the grassland of the first floor meant he was accustomed to the conditions. Whilst he walked he unsheathed his spear to look at it. An interesting design, with a black metal pole, and a curved spear head the player hadn't used it since entering the realms of SAO.

"Hmph" Zamharuun let out a sigh as he walked under the canopy of the forest. The spearman often felt depressed, so much that he didn't recognize many other emotions. "I should get back." His tone was quiet and there was something eerie about it. Zamharuun currently lacked any skill with his weapon. Hopefully the potions he could craft would grant him the skill he needed to... he was unsure himself of what he was going to do once he had the skill. Slowly he continued through the forest, keeping an eye out for any other materials that caught the players eye.

Nothing stood out to the player. Thinking he heard the rogue noise of something brushing behind him, he quickly began to run his cloak tailing in the wind. Glancing over his shoulder he thought he saw a humanoid figure. "What..." Zamharuun paused and looked down at his hands, "Why are they shaking?... Why am I so scared?" Slowly he pulled his hood over his head and covered his face with his arm. It was still raining and the forest had begun to cloud up with mist. Zamharuun kept a watchful eye out for any other movement. Had he been daydreaming?

The thick mist began to obscure his vision as he continued through the forest. No materials were in sight any longer. Zamharuun carefully looked around him, if he wanted to find anything he would need to return back to the grasslands. He decided he would go past the river on his way back. From there he would get a clear view of the town of beginnings even with the thunder storm raging on. A wild fox shot past him, it was probably hiding from the weather itself. The spearman carefully watched it appear before him then only vanish again in a matter of moments. The forest ended up ahead.

As the forest opened up Zamharuun was once again forced back by the storm. As he walked lightning struck off somewhere in the distance, lighting his face up momentarily revealing the deep red color to his eyes. Up ahead a player was running screaming something, there voice mingling with the wind. Another flash of light struck and that person was no more. Zamharuun simply watched "You're suffering is over now." He didn't hear those words come out themselves, but they did none the less.

Zamharuun wandered across the grasslands. He hadn't seen any materials for a while now. "Is what I've gathered enough?" He glanced at the materials in his inventory. The mushroom and the flower. One a fungus which would spread through the cold and dark left untouched, the other a flower which with the right circumstances could have it's seed carried by a bird or in the wind, and have more flowers grow. The spearman stared and wondered which represented people better. Humming a rather dark tune to himself he decided it'd be best to wait and see. It was hard to perceive anything in these conditions, the river was flooded. But Zamharuun approached to test his luck.

There was no sign of anything that could be scavenged. The player needed something else, anything. Slowly he lifted his hood up. The storm had begun to move on now so things were a little clearer. Crouching down near the bank he ran his hand through the water. It was very cold but he retained from pulling it out. Submerging his arm deeper and deeper he eventually managed to grab something and carefully pulled it out. As he pulled the object out he realized he had picked up a rock. Zamharuun simply sighed and dropped it back into the water.

Zamharuun continued walking besides the river, scanning it. Unfortunately to no avail could he find anything. Sighing the spearman returned to the area he had come from. The player got out the materials he gathered, all he needed to do was craft a potion from them. He lifted up the flower and twirled it around between his fingers. He observed the flower oddly. Time to see if I can have any success. Slowly he set up the appropriate crafting table and was ready to try and craft a potion from the flower.

Zamharuun spent the next several hours slowly turning the flower into a potion. The end result was a green vial that glowed brightly. Hydra stared at the potion. "So this is life..." He observed the strange liquid swirling it around in his hand. The player soon forgot about the mushroom, he was fascinated by the potion. It had an odd smell, the green reminded him like that which could be found on the grasslands. Slowly he stood up and put the vial into his cloak pocket. Then he pulled the quest description up, to see if he had completed it.

The storm had calmed by now, and the sun broke through the clouds of the first floor. Zamharuun looked up to the sky. He hated the sun, it was always there. Warming people up, setting up a sense of false hope. The spearman hadn't realized how little sleep he had had. His body began to slumber forward and he fell against a tree. Slowly he slid down his back to the trunk. He made sure to keep the potion he had crafted in his pocket. His hand tightly locked over the side. The flower had sparked an interest in Zamharuun, perhaps if he were to gather more, he could dive deeper into the meaning of life.

Zamharuun woke up hours later. It had grown dark, he was unsure how long he had been asleep. The player opened up his pocket and checked the potion was still there. After this he got up and began to look around  "I have crafted the item now what?..." Zamharuun stayed sat down pondering on what to do next. "Perhaps I should enter the town of beginning's." He stared towards the ground, his fringe covering his eyes. A cool breeze swept past, yet he remained silent. Simply staring into the abyss as though something were going to happen. Eventually he stood up and began to walk. Although he had the same intent expression on his face.

Zamharuun walked for a few hours in complete silence. It was dark so he had no encounters not even that of a boar. Eventually he came to a standstill, in front of him lay the gates to the town of beginnings. Towering over him as though he were an insignificant rodent. The spearman hadn't been here for a while, he had avoided people in fear he might hurt them. Now he just wanted to complete the quest. He was a green player so passed the gates into the safe zone easily enough. Passing all the pubs and taverns he carefully pulled the hood of the cloak over his head and headed for the town center.

After walking through the Town of Beginning's Zamharuun found what he was looking for. A sign reading the botanists lab stood up in front of him. The player was still cautious of strangers so entered briskly and darted looks around to see if anyone was inside. "I should be fine..." The spearman planned to wait for the owner of the store to show up. Maybe a few hours of waiting would help. Looking outside the store's window Zamharuun looked at the vast expanse of the market that lay in front of him. "Perhaps I should buy something whilst I am here." The players voice was filled with curiosity and caution.
