[SP-F1] CH. 1 - Waking In the Nightmare - COMPLETE

Recommended Posts

Miaki laid completely sprawled on the damp grass a couple miles from the the <>. His face was completely dug into a soft patch of grass there. He slowly started to shift around coming out of his sleep. He awoke rather still and groggy, and who could blame him? He'd slept on the ground completely exhausted. But why had he slept on the ground? Miaki slowly pushed himself up to a sitting position and brushed some grass off of his light-brown jacket. Brushing some twigs and blades of grass from his hair he tried to recall how he got where he was. The memory escaped him for the moment so he looked around him trying to find something that would bring him answers. He started to stand up, his body reminding him of where he'd just sleep, with grogginess still affecting him. He without thinking looked where one would have worn a wristwatch to check the time and day. Not wearing one he started to get confused.

He found himself in a slightly dense forest. Forest? What is- That's when it hit him. The logging in. The ominous bells. The hooded figure. The lack of a log out button. The beginning nightmare.

Fear started the slip in and Miaki froze for a moment. He was about to start panicking again. His brain now fully awake started running 1,000 RPM and waved open the HUD. He brought up a clock and saw the time and day. The display read: 14:23, Monday Nov. 7, 2022

Miaki shook his head, trying to discard the events of yesterday. A sick feeling entered his stomach. He wanted to throw up. Could you do that in this game? He didn't want to find out. Looking again at the date and time on his HUD, Miaki took a deep breath and tried to get his bearings again.

"Guess I should find my way back to the <>."

Miaki drew his <>, wanting something to hold on to, and walked in the general direction of the city.

As he walked, Miaki thought of everything that transpired yesterday. From his last moment in the real world to chaos of the announcement that they were trapped. He missed his family. By now they probably knew what had happened to him and were no doubt in despair. To think that he wanted to bring his friends into this game. He kind of still did. Atleast then he would have someone to help him through this. What was he to do!? He yelled in anger and frustration over this ordeal and kicked a rock he was crossing then swung his sword as hard as he could against a nearby tree. Rage started to flow through his body, replacing the fear and depression.

-THUMP THUNK TWING- Miaki swung with pure-filled rage at the tree which started popping up alerts reading <>. He ignored these pop ups and kept swinging. With each swing a new alert appeared and nothing changed in the tree's appearance. Clearly the system wouldn't allow a player to use a sword on a tree but Miaki didnt care. He was too angry to care.

After swinging furiously for no idea how long, he stopped with extreme exhaustion. And leaned on his sword. Panting heavily. He slowly dragged his feet forward and began walking again toward the city.

Walking for about 30 minutes or so, Miaki was out of the forest which he woke up in and was now on a road leading to the <>. He could see the city now. The massive city spanning 7 miles was from what he knew, one of the largest cities in SAO. It'd have to be seeing as it would have to house almost 10,000 players. Miaki realized then that he too would have to make this place his new home. At least until he made it to the next floor and found somewhere there.

Walking through the city gates, past the NPC guards Miaki's mind was still focused on the situation he got himself in. "Why did I get this damn game!?" He shouted to no one but himself. "If I had waited for but maybe 4 or 5 hours, I would've known that this game was a death trap!" Taking a random alleyway that was an offshoot from the main road in the city, Miaki saw a barrel standing up. Happy to have something else to kick, Miaki gave the barrel a swift kick which knocked it over on its side. "Damn it!" He screamed at the sky. "What is it you want?" He wasn't sure if he was yelling at Kayaba, God, or something else. He simply wanted someone to direct his anger to.

Frustrated and confused, Miaki found himself passing through a hub in the city where players seemed to gather. He saw many players scattered about. There were several massive sized groups with players listening to someone likely in the center of the group. Whether it was an NPC or some random player was anyone's guess. Other smaller groups seemed to be more social with each other. Maybe these were people that had partied up and were doing their best to stick together. Or maybe they were random strangers. Who knew. Then he saw the players together in couples, some seemed really close to each other based on how hard they were clinging to one another. Did they think that if they let go that they would never see each other again?

Slowly Miaki's frustration started to simmer down. Atleast for the time being. For the moment he felt completely alone.

Miaki looked to wear his wristwatch would've been. "Oh, right." Forgetting that he couldn't check the time like that anymore. That's when he noticed in his peripheral vision the time read out in the upper right corner of his immediate sight. The time read <<16:37>>. Did he really take nearly two hours to get back? He thought about just how far he must have ran yesterday in a blind mix of emotions. For now though he was emotionally drained. He realized he hadn't had anything to eat at all since yesterday and decided that that was the next thing to do. With a goal now in mind, Miaki went out in search of a vendor to get some food from.

Miaki went searching around for some vendor with food. He poked his head in a few places and didn't find anything of interest, he didn't even know what it was that he wanted to eat. He finally found place that made various types of sandwiches and he got himself one with various meats and cheeses. He chose to sit down on a bench that was close by and eat. When he found one he began to watch players go back and forth. Most people had the same if not similar expression on their faces. Grief, depression, despair. It was hard to believe that just yesterday everyone was so excited and running around full of energy. Now it was a whole new atmosphere. As he started eating his sub he tried, for the first time since hearing the GM reveal to them their new reality, to relax.

Finishing up his sandwich, Miaki thought back again to how quickly he rattled off an emotionless post to the social media bidding them farewell and that he'd be back at the point which he couldn't see straight. Well, being in SAO for over 24 hours and that had yet to happen to him. He cracked a small smile. "Well, my vision is still fine, guess it's not time to log out yet." After saying this he thought about his situation anew.

He was trapped inside a game, one that was insanely realistic. Isn't this what any gamer dreams about? To live out their adventures in a game. Here he was with this ideal and he was complaining. So long as he didn't die, which he refused to let happen, he'd see his friends and family in the real world again. Taking the last bite of his meal, Miaki felt that he just might be able to handle this new reality. If he was going to be stuck here, then he'd better get used to it.

This newfound spirit started to rise up in Miaki, the darkness in the beyond tried to snuff it out but the new drive was too sudden and too strong. He sat up with a whole new vigor, a skip in his step nearly. He wanted to jump in the air and shout, not in anger or rage, but with strength and determination. A fiery look entered his eyes. He felt full of life and energy. Ready to run out into this new world he was in and fight through legions of monsters. He drew his sword and aimed it toward the sky. He didn't care if anyone saw him standing in a plaza making a spectacle; in fact he hoped they saw him then maybe they too would feel this kind of drive. "Alright Kayaba! I'm ready for you! You want me to win this game? FINE! I'll beat every floor you have ahead of us!" He shouted out at the sky and shook his sword aimed to the floors far above them.
