[SP-F1] To Heal the Sick «Secret Medicine of the Forest» (Complete)

Recommended Posts

Horunka Village was quite nice this time of year. Evander had only been here once before, and that was around the end of winter. Now that it was late spring, the small hamlet's streets was slightly more crowded. It was a good idea to visit again. Perhaps there was a quest here that he could do or something. He needed some better equipment so that all of his attacks weren't so pathetic. Hmm. He remembered hearing something about a famous quest here, in the village, in which one could get a better sword. It was probably horrible compared to others' weapons, but it had to be better than his basic sword. He just needed to find out where it actually was. Evander knocked on the door of a random house. An NPC opened the door. She looked fairly haggard, beat-down, and the bags under her eyes indicated nights of restless sleep, or perhaps none at all. "Yes? What do you need?" Evander looked up, and- yep, this was the quest NPC. She had the whole yellow cursor deal. Their quest likely had to do with what they were so stressed about. "Oh, nothing at all, ma'am, but perhaps you are in need of assistance?" Evander replied.

The woman looked down for a second, then beckoned him in. Evander followed the woman after closing the door behind them. They walked up the stairs, and stopped outside a bedroom. "My daughter is sick, kind sir. Perhaps you could help our poor family?" Ah, well, it was clear that this quest had to deal with the sick daughter. "Let me see what I can do." Evander opened the door and stepped inside. The walls were drab, just like every single other wall in the house. There was a little girl on the bed, clutching a little stuffed bear in her arms. Evander knelt by the bed and put his hand against the girl's forehead. Now, he wasn't any doctor, but even he could tell that the forehead wasn't supposed to be this hot. Wait, so, how was he supposed to trigger the quest? He turned to the woman, still outside the door. "I'm afraid I know little about medicine. Perhaps you have some family cure that would help?" "Oh, yes, we do, but the ingredients that we need can only be harvested from the <Little Nepents> outside the village. It is a red flower. Perhaps... perhaps you could? Oh, no, what am I saying, we couldn't possibly ask that of you. We have nothing to pay in return." Wow, these NPCs were fairly life-like at times. Well, this was the quest, but there was no reward? The window popped up in front of him. Whatever. He had nothing better to be doing anyway. Evander tapped the Accept button.

"Oh, thank you so much!" Evander nodded, smiled a little at the NPC, and walked out of the house. He began to walk down the beaten path into the woods. Ah, yes, the Little Nepents. They were creepy, and he hadn't fought one in ages. Speak of the devil, there were some now! Two Little Nepents began to walk? Slither? Whatever the terminology, they were coming toward him. Evander drew his sword. These didn't have a flower on their head, but he was assuming that it wouldn't be just as easy as killing one Nepent. It was probably a rare little boss or something. Well, best to get this over with quickly. Evander charged forth, activating the sword art Rage Spike. The Nepents' vines rose up into the air to block the attack. His blade cut through most of the vines, cutting into both monsters, but they both managed to lash out at him in retaliation. The Thorns enchantment on his armor finished up the job. Wow, these were easier than when he last remembered.

Well, they were probably easier because he had leveled up some since last he saw them. Whatever. Evander sheathed his blade and continued walking down the path. Today was a nice day. Glancing up, he saw a bird swooping overhead in the branches. He continued walking down the forest trail. Wait- was that a red flower over there, in the distance, bobbing up and down? Evander began to chase after the flower. Hmm, finding the flower had taken less time than he thought- whoa, that was a bunch of teeth. Evander backpedaled to avoid landing in the Nepent's mouth. So, here it was. The Nepent Variant. Evander really hoped that it would drop the flower, but knowing his luck, that was extremely unlikely. Evander drew his blade, and charged at the monster, as its vines began to whip up around it. Evander cut across the beast's side, but its skin was tough. His attack did the minimum amount of damage. That reinforced the fact that he really needed a better weapon. The Nepent's vines lashed out at him, invoking the wrath of his Thorns enchantment. He was really glad he had gotten his cloak- otherwise, they would be here all day.

Evander rolled his left shoulder, hearing a pop, then held the sword up again. This was actually pretty easy. If the Nepent just attacked him one more time, his Torns would activate and likely kill it. He probably didn't even have to do anything, just stand there and wait for it to die, but he felt like that was just straight-up abusing the system. He needed to land some hits so that he didn't feel so useless. The monster continued to come towards him, vines lashing about every which way. Evander ducked under an attacking vine, which he probably should have just let hit to end this, but whatever, more dodging practice, and lunged in for another attack on the monster, his sword gleaming. Hopefully this would be it, and he would get the flower, and everything would be okay. The monster knocked his sword off-course, causing him to miss, but it decided to bite his arm to do some damage, causing it to die because of his thorns. Evander almost felt bad for the thing. It burst in a bunch of particles. Nothing was left behind. That was to be expected.

Well, his HP was barely down at all, and he didn't even really need to land any hits at all, so he was ready and raring to go for another batch of Little Nepents. Sheathing his blade, Evander went off in search for another Variant. Evander basked in the cool breeze of spring. He was glad he didn't really get allergies, both in real life and in the game, though the latter was probably the same for everyone, considering it was just a bunch of code they were living in. Evander spotted another gaggle of Little Nepents and rushed on over, hoping for one with a flower. Well, no luck there, but at least it was good training. Evander drew his sword, preparing to make his attack. No need for fancy things like sword arts- they were going to die eventually anyway. Evander cut through one of the Nepent's sides, leaving a deep gash. Both of the Nepents missed, for some infallible reason. He wasn't even moving! Perhaps it was because they lacked eyes with which to see.

Evander stepped back. These Nepents were practically nothing to him now because of his cloak. He could probably sit back and wait for the Nepents to come to him. Well, he was glad that it wasn't much of a challenge- the alternative could result in death. However, he wasn't getting any better by just mowing down easy enemies, and the experience gain was almost nil. He couldn't even get any drops. Perhaps it was time to move on to greener pastures- the second floor. The first floor was nice and all, and it had some good memories, and also was a place where he could pay his respects to the dead, but he was stagnating by only training on the first. He should probably get to climbing those stairs to the second. He could teleport down any time he wanted. Oh, yeah, he had some Nepents to be fighting. Evander walked in slowly for another attack. He cut a gash into the other Nepent, then stood still as the vines hit him. Thorns subsequently activated, and ended the monsters' lives.

The two Nepents burst into particles. Evander kept his sword out and continued walking. Wow, he was on a roll today, huh? He already killed five monsters in about fifteen minutes. Granted, his cloak did all the work, and these monsters were pretty easy, but still. He just needed to get the drop, then he could be on his merry way. He could finish the quest, then get a new weapon, hopefully. He would probably climb up the stairs to the Second Floor after he was done here, because he liked doing things the old-fashioned way, and there would hopefully be a whole plethora of quests for him to do up there. Evander blinked. There was another Nepent Variant straight ahead. Well, that was a pretty lucky encounter- he got another chance at getting the flower. Hopefully it actually dropped it this time, though considering how the flower was probably a rare drop, and how his luck was quite possibly one of the worst, he didn't have high hopes. Evander rushed in to slash at the monster. His blade sheared through several of the vines around the beast, and cut deep into its side. Or, at least it would have if he had a better weapon or used a sword art. Its skin was very thick, and his blade barely scratched its surface. The Nepent Variant swung its vines around to attack him, but they missed, whipping through the air just above his head.

Evander stepped back, holding his sword up in front of him. He scratched his head. The Nepent Variant turned around to face him. Man, his sword was really bad- it had barely done anything. If he couldn't even hurt monsters on the first floor very much, how would he even hope of killing monsters on higher floors? Pretty much the only way he could was if he let his armor kill them, which was pretty cheap, and kind of what he was doing here. Also, that was probably going to get him killed at some point. No matter how much he trained with the sword, there were limits on what he could achieve with a weak weapon. The Nepent opened its mouth wide and shuffled forth to swallow him whole. Evander jumped back in shock. He needed to pay attention to the battle. This was quickly becoming a very bad habit. Well, he didn't even really need to worry anyway, since the armor would kill it. Evander walked forward halfheartedly to draw another wound in the Nepent's side. His sword missed, since he wasn't really trying, and when the vine came whipping for his head, he did nothing to try to dodge it. That was a somewhat bad idea. It knocked him down to the ground, and if he didn't have his armor, it likely would have hurt quite a bit too. Darn it, his Thorns didn't activate either.

Evander got to his feet, sighing. This was a really drawn-out battle. The Nepent's skin was too thick for him to do any meaningful damage to it from his sword, and his armor was too well-made for the Nepent to be able to do any meaningful damage to him. The only thing that was going to end this battle was the Thorns enchantment. This was pretty stupid. Basically, all he had to do was act as a punching bag for the creature, and it would die. Evander sighed again, and sheathed his sword. No point in wasting energy to fight these things. Yeah, he knew he said, or thought, earlier that he would keep on swinging his sword, but the whole thing was feeling pretty futile, and he was feeling lazy. Evander simply stepped forward calmly in order to hopefully be hit another time and activate his Thorns. Wow, was the universe messing with him now or something? The Nepent missed, even though he was standing right in front of it, making no attempt to dodge at all. That was pretty sad.

Evander shuffled awkwardly in front of the monster for a bit before drawing back. Wow. The monster missed a target practically in front of its face. Yeah, it didn't have eyes, but still, that was fairly pathetic. Evander drew his sword again, sighing. If the monster couldn't hit him, he would have to hit it. Evander had no idea how the AI of the Nepent worked, but he was guessing it was based on some sort of scent tracking or something. Well, whatever, he didn't need to think about this stuff. It was pretty irrelevant to the fight anyway. What he should be thinking out is how he would kill this thing. It was clearly incompetent, disregarding that one lucky slap to the head it had made. This meant he would have to kill it on his own, with his sword. This could take a while. Well, might as well get started now. Evander rushed forward toward the Nepent Variant. He missed. Wow. The moment he began to try, he missed. How ironic. The Nepent lashed him across the chest with one of its vines, actually hitting him and knocking him back. This was even more ironic. Well, at least Thorns could do some damage now.

Yeah, the universe was definitely messing with him. Well, whatever. As long as it messed with him in a positive way, he was fine with it. Evander got to his feet. Well, the good news was that he just needed to be hit one more time, then he could be pretty much done. Well, if the Nepent dropped the flower, that is. He hoped it did. That way, he could get whatever quest reward there was, because there was definitely one, no matter what the NPC had said. It made no technical sense to have a quest without a reward- no player would ever do it. There wouldn't really be a point, at least for most players. He wasn't really even sure why he had chosen to do this quest for the dubious chance of it being the right one. The quest he was looking for was probably elsewhere, but he had already agreed to do this quest, and he wasn't planning on breaking his word. Evander stepped forth to deal another blow against the Nepent. Evander cut another gash in the Nepent's side. Well, at least it was going to die event- whoa! Evander was sent flying back, and slammed into a tree. Leaves fluttered down from the force of the impact. He fell to the ground on his arms, coughing. That hurt. A lot.

Evander coughed, then coughed a few more times for good measure. He groaned. Blech. He spit out a wad of saliva, and shakily got to his feet. Why did that have to hurt so much? Wait a second, they were in a virtual reality game, which was purported to not have any pain. Was he just imagining it? It felt so real, but perhaps that was just his mind providing the feelings to go along with what he saw. As he thought, the pain receded away. Well, he didn't really know. Probably should have read up on the NerveGear before he put it on. Probably should have waited and read reviews, and seen that no one was coming out. There were a lot of things he should have done, but oh well. He was here now. And there was nothing he could do about it. At least he would go an adventure that he would remember for a lifetime. Evander brushed himself off, and picked up his sword. It was time for the littler sucker to die. Evander ran forward, and cut another scratch in the monster's hide. Well, it would eventually die from all of these cuts. The monster flailed its vines about, oh geez that was a lot moving at very high-oof! Evander flew back again, this time landing on the ground and skidding back, creating a small trench. Evander barely managed to tilt his head up and look at the Nepent. Oh gosh, the pain, the pain was wracking in, oh why oh gosh. Maybe he was mistaken about the whole pain not in here thing. The monster was fighting ferociously now, a far cry from its incompetence earlier. Why did it hurt so much?

Evander wiped his hand slowly across the corner of his mouth. That hurt. He was in a world of pain right now. His back was killing him. He thought there wasn't supposed to be pain! Unless he was imagining this, of course. But the pain still was not receding. Evander grit his teeth, and stood. He held his sword shakily in front of him. Darn, was he going to have to use one of those crystals Takao had given him? He really hoped not. But still, he could barely even stand, and his health was a low yellow right now. Wow, did its last two attacks just ignore his armor? That was pretty bad. Why couldn't the monster just die? Logic dictated that it should have died long ago, but clearly, logic was not able to affect the whims of fate. Well, whatever, he could probably take one more hit before having to use a crystal. Evander limped forward, then forced himself into a run. The quicker he could end this, the quicker he could rest. He lashed out with his sword. His hand was shaking, and his aim was off. His blade missed the Nepent by a long shot. The Nepent missed him as well, likely because he was swaying about everywhere from all of the pain, imagined or no.

Pain was wracking his body. He was sore and bruised. Two critical hits in a row, two large impacts in a row, did not do the body well. Blech. He wasn't going to be able to hit anything. His vision was spinning. Alright, he needed to focus, he needed to control himself. He did not feel the pain. He did not feel the pain. He could not feel the pain. He was fine. Everything was fine. Evander's back straightened. His eyes narrowed. He stepped back to catch his breath for a second. His hand stopped shaking. This monster was going to die, no matter if it was going to be from his Thorns enchantment or from his many ineffectual cuts. A deep breath in, a deep exhalation. He was ready. It was time to end this. Evander charged forth, sword held out in front of him as the Nepent's vines flew towards him. His whole body screamed as he slashed with his sword in one great movement. He cut through the vines, nailing another blow across the Nepent's side. A vine came to hit him from behind, knocking him forward, but he did not fall. He would not. The Nepent exploded in a spray of particles.

One last trial remained. The test of luck. Did the flower drop? Were his toils in vain? Did all of the pain he suffered through fighting against this rather weak monster mean anything? The particles, burning motes of light, began to fade away. There, right in front of him, was the <Nepent's Ovule>.

<Nepent's Ovule> gained.

Evander fell to his knees. It was finally over. Yeah, he was probably being melodramatic and all, but still. He was tired. He let up on the intense focus he had forced upon himself and allowed himself to relax. There was no more pain. He was just tired, but it was the good kind of tired, the feeling of a hard day's work accomplished. Honestly, he thought that with his luck, he would have to fight fifty more of these, but obviously fate had taken pity on him. Well, might as well get going and take his rest at the village. Better not tempt fate by hanging around outside of a safe zone. The quest was done! It was time to see what juicy rewards he would get.

Evander got to his feet and sheathed his sword. He stretched, popping his back, and began to walk back to the village, hands in his pockets and slouched over. A nap sounded very good about now. But, back to the village first, turn in the quest, get something nice and warm to eat at the one restaurant here, and finally turn in for the day. All things considered, it wasn't actually all that late- it was around 2:00 PM, based off his estimates with the sun, but he really didn't feel like doing anything else today. A better weapon, probably, and a solid beating from a monster was enough to be considered a good day's work. It was certainly better than most other days, in which he just slowly built up his col reserves. Also, his luck was actually pretty insane today, compared to other times. It only took two Nepent Variant encounters for him to get the drop. He did not expect that. Evander walked through the safe zone boundary of Horunka Village.

Alright, now, where was that NPC woman's house/cottage place again? He had things to do, places to go. Well, the only place he really needed to go to was an inn room, but eh. It was better to get this over with quickly. Evander looked at the houses in the village. Ah, there was the one. He knocked on the door. The disheveled woman opened the door slowly and wearily. "What do you nee- oh you're back!" At this the woman's eyes lighted up. Was that a tear in her eye? "Thank God for your kindness, stranger. Come in, come in." She bustled him in, and he wasn't even able to get a word in edgewise. She sat him down at the dining room table and ladled out a bowl of soup for him. "Eat." She commanded it in a no-nonsense manner. "It's the least we could do for what you have done for us. Give me the flower, and I'll begin to make the cure. You just sit tight, and eat." Man, Evander could imagine how awkward it would be if he didn't actually get the flower. It was a good thing he was a man of his words. "Here you go, ma'am." The flower materialized on the table. She immediately took it and went into the kitchen, and a happy and joyful whistling could be heard. In spite of himself, Evander smiled. Oh, shoot, was he getting attached to NPCs?

Evander tucked into the soup. It was pretty delicious. As the woman passed by him, anxiously pacing back and forth while mushing the flower in a mortar and pestle, he thanked her. "Oh, no, there is no need for thanks. We should be thanking you a hundred-fold." The woman smiled, a genuine smile, and Evander smiled in return. "My husband should be returning from the fields soon. I can't wait to tell him! Thank you, thank you so much." "Oh, it's no problem at all." The woman went back into the kitchen. Evander downed the rest of the soup. He felt content. All thoughts of any reward were pushed to the back of his mind- seeing this family happy was reward enough. Wait a sec, that's right, he did a quest. So... he should get a reward. But whenever Evander saw the woman smiling at the thought of seeing her daughter healthy again, and safe from the reaching hands of death, he felt guilty for even thinking about getting a reward. The woman came by and tapped him on the shoulder. "I think my daughter would like to see you when she awakes. Come with me." Evander followed her upstairs, back to the little girl's room. The girl was tossing and turning in the bed, her teddy bear discarded onto the floor. As the woman began to feed her daughter the medicine, Evander knelt and picked up the bear. He looked at the bear, and gave a smile, both full of intense happiness and content, and yet, still with a tinge of wistful melancholy. He put the bear on the bed, next to the girl.

The little girl's blue eyes opened. She looked at him curiously, then threw her arms around her mother. The mother and daughter embraced, no words being said, as none were needed between the two. Evander wiped a tear- wait, was he actually crying from joy? Seriously? Wow. The woman whispered in the girl's ear, and the girl turned to look at him with wide, innocent eyes. Evander smiled, then stood. He began to creep out of the room, not wanting to disturb the family bonding moment going on. He walked down the stairs, and sat on a chair in the kitchen. The front door opened. A farmer walked in, looking around frantically. Setting eyes on Evander, he marched over to him. "Are you the one who saved my daughter?!" Taken aback by this man's aggression, Evander responded quickly. "Yes, sir. There is no need to thank me- it was no trouble at all. I was obligated to help in any way I could." The man began to break down, tears running from his eyes. "Thank you, thank you so much, stranger. You have saved my daughter, the joy of my life. Thank you. How can we repay you?" "No payment is necessary. It is payment enough to see the joy in your family's faces." Evander smiled. The man began to pace around the room, thinking. "Well, I should take my leave. I do not wish to take any more of your family's time." Evander got up from the chair, and walked past the man. "Wait!" Evander turned back. The farmer walked into a side room and came out with a sheathed sword. It obviously had not been used for some time, as dust encased the sheath. "My grandfather used this sword to slay monsters in the founding of this village." The farmer pushed the sword into your hands. "It is the only thing of worth that we own. Take it. I will not allow you to refuse."
