[SP-F1~F2] Step by Step (Complete)

Recommended Posts

It was time. He needed to move on from the first floor. He had a good run here and all, but he needed to get on the road. Time and tide wait for no man. His training was being stunted by remaining here, as there was a limit to how strong the monsters were and how many quests there were on the first floor. On the second, his prospects would be expanded. Evander stood at the Field of Crossroads, Tolbana, the raid base, in his sights. How long had it been since someone had even been here? Ever since the players had moved on from the first floor, Tolbana had likely been abandoned. It's usefulness had been nil ever since this floor was cleared. Evander looked down the other path towards Horunka Village. He chuckled a little. He hadn't even known about this road there until yesterday, after he finished that quest with the sick girl. His first two trips had just been struggling through the forest in the approximate direction of the village.

Evander drew the sword he had gotten from the quest. It had been purported to be a family relic, though it was likely a new copy was spawned in every time someone completed the quest. He held the blade in his hands. It was certainly more interesting than his basic sword to say the least. Its edges were slightly jagged, and the middle of the blade was a dark azure, while the edges were a normal iron color. It was longer than his other one, and had a bit more weight. It would take a bit to get used to. Well, at least he had already mastered, or, uh, at least he already became somewhat okay at using his left hand in sword fighting. He still preferred his right of course, but eventually he would be just as good at both. Then, he could pretty much call himself ambidextrous. He was already starting to do some things with his left hand. Evander shook himself out of his thoughts. He needed to get going. He had already trained himself plenty, just to be sure, so he was sure that even if the monsters on the second floor were three times stronger than those on the first, he would be fine. Probably. Yeah, he needed to get going.

A part of him wondered why he didn't just use the teleporter to get to the next floor, like any other sane player. However, he had already told himself before that he would climb up all of these stairs by himself and only use the teleporter to get to floors he had already been to. Something about earning his way up or something. Yeah, he was feeling pretty stupid about it now, but whatever. At least it would build character. Evander began to plod down the road to Tolbana. There were a few wolves just roaming about, but they were probably just chaff to him now. He ignored them. A butterfly flew around in front of him, likely looking for some nectar. The weather was nice today, as it pretty much was every single day. His feet fell, one after the other, along on the dusty road. He wasn't going to argue about such nice weather. No monsters bothered him as he walked along, which was fairly nice. He decided to sheath his blade. No sense in just walking about with it in front of him for no reason. His mind began to zone out. Before he knew it, Tolbana lay before him. Its large, white walls loomed before him. Or, at least, they used to be white. Vines grew along the wall, and it was somewhat eroded. It was most definitely larger than Horunka, but not quite as large as the Town of Beginnings. Evander walked through the gates, glad to take a break and a drink after the hour or so of walking.

Evander took a seat on a stone bench by a fountain. Tolbana was pretty empty, with only aimless NPCs roaming about with no players to cater to. It was practically a ghost town. Evander sighed. He was used to hearing the bustle of city life while sitting in a civilized location, but this was obviously not the case here. It was as silent as the dead. The NPCs did not talk, as there was no player to talk to. All he could hear was the sound of water as it flowed from the fountain, back into the pool at the bottom, to come back up in an endless cycle. Evander stood up. That was enough of a break, and he wasn't feeling thirsty any more. He walked through the rest of the settlement. It was actually fairly small in contrast to its large walls. He exited through the other gate, Tolbana and its never-halting fountains behind him. The ghost town had made him pretty on edge, and a bit stressed out, for some reason. It wasn't because there wasn't anyone there to interact with, since he didn't normally talk to anyone anyway, and he was fine out in nature with the birds around him. Evander took a deep breath, and exhaled. It was probably because the raid base had seemed so lifeless. Well, whatever. It was over now. Evander continued to walk down the beaten dirt road, looking up at the looming tower above him.

The tower connected with the sky above, linking the first and second floors together. Evander walked along the dirt road, hands in his pockets, trying to shake off the oppressing mood that pervaded Tolbana. It was moments like these that made him wish he had a companion, someone he could talk to, someone he could joke around with. They would help shake off this feeling that loomed over him. Alas, he was doomed to walk alone on this path. Evander sighed, then shook his head, clearing himself of these thoughts. He continued walking. In what seemed like no time at all, he reached the entrance to the tower. It was a largely unassuming door, set into the side of a hill. Evander looked up. Holy cow, that was going to be a lot of stairs. The tower seemed never-ending from this perspective. Evander looked back at the door. How long had it even been since someone was in here? Evander pushed open the door and stared into the hallway behind it. It was sparsely lighted with torches, darkness enveloping the spaces between. Frankly, it looked like a scene from some horror movie. Evander grinned. He loved horror movies. He drew his sword and stepped into the hallway, the door swinging shut behind him.

Evander tried to pull a torch out of the wall, but it wouldn't budge. Well, whatever. He continued to walk down the hallway, his sword held up warily in front of him. He reached a winding stone staircase. Well, it was somewhat surprising that he hadn't encountered any mobs yet, but perhaps there were simply none on this first small hallway level. He wasn't going to argue. He climbed up the stairs, skipping some steps that looked pretty loose. He reached the end of the stairs. It opened up in a great hall, with a door on the other side likely leading to more stairs. Well, this room looked pretty empty too. Evander began to walk forward, when a skeleton stepped out from behind a crevice. He jumped back a bit in shock. Well, this was a dungeon, there was bound to be monsters. The skeleton held up a rusty sword and began to advance. Evander hoped he didn't get tetanus from it. Oh, wait, they were in a game, right. That meant there probably were no diseases like that. Well, whatever. Evander ran forward to deal the first strike. It was probably time to try out one of his new and shiny sword arts. He activated <Vertical Arc>, a sword art that came with his investment in the second rank of his One Handed Straight Sword skill. He was glad he chose to spend the SP. His body, moving with the system assist, cut two gashes in the skeleton, in a V shape, and its health dropped straight down to zero. However, the skeleton managed to nick him while he was moving forward. Well, at least he had his armor. It wouldn't have really even done much anyway.

The skeleton burst in a spray of pixels. Evander looked down at the Anneal Blade in his left hand. The quest reward was doing pretty well as a weapon. Certainly much better than the basic one he had. Evander walked on over to where the remains of the skeleton would be, if this were real life, to pick up his reward.

Obtained 90 col and 1 mat.

Hmm, it seemed his luck was picking up recently. He remembered when he didn't even get any drops at all, despite killing monsters for hours. Perhaps the universe was looking out for him now. Anyway, it was time to move on. The hall he was in was spacious, and didn't seem to have much in the way of furnishings. A few rotting tapestries lay on the walls, and a few sets of armors stood between the columns on the sides. Other than that, the room was pretty much empty. Evander looked up. There was a chandelier, dusty, cobwebs lacing over the whole structure from all of the years of abandonment. Evander continued to walk forward. He reached the wooden door on the other end of the hall and slowly pushed it open, wary of traps. Behind it lay more stairs. Great. At least they weren't winding this time.

Evander stepped through the door. It creaked as he shut it behind him. Evander continued to hold up his sword warily. It was likely that he would be able to kill any monster in this dungeon, even if they got the drop on him, but he could never be too sure. Evander walked up the stairs slowly, step by step, to make sure that none were going to suddenly drop out from under him or anything. Well, at least he was moving up. He hoped that the tower did not follow normal spatial rules. If it did, there was going to be a whole lot of climbing. He wasn't even sure if he could even climb up the whole tower in a day. Evander reached the top of the stairs. Another wooden door lay in front of him, though this one was marked with two crossing lines, otherwise known as an "X", carved into the wood rather unevenly, as if with a sword or some sort of sharp weapon. This was either promising or extremely dangerous. Evander pushed open the door slowly and peered inside. It was a rather small, square room, with a particularly bright torch on each of the walls. There was a bench in the middle, and the walls themselves were clean, almost in pristine condition, in contrast to the rest of the tower. There was even a small rack on the side on which one could place their weapons, and was that a cot on the floor over there? Alright, this was either a particularly elaborate trap, or it could be just a safe zone where players could take a break in the middle of adventuring. He didn't really know why one was so close to the entrance, but whatever. Maybe it was to introduce the players to the concept of safe zones in dungeons?

Evander pushed the door open all the way. No point in just dallying about, even if it were a trap. A notification popped up on his map. <Safe zone discovered!> Well, that pretty much confirmed its safety. Evander stepped inside. The difference in light levels was almost staggering, compared to the darkness in the tower proper. The safe room was very bright. Evander set his sword on the rack and took a seat on the bench. He didn't really need the break, but whatever, it was best to take breaks as often as one could, since they might not be able to get one later. Oh, and hey, there was even a little stream over there, coming from a crevice in a wall. This safe zone was very supplied. About the only thing it didn't have was food. Evander cupped his hands, gathering some water from the small stream, and cautiously sipped it. It wasn't possible to die in a safe zone, but it was better to be safe than sorry. Well, the water tasted alright. Evander took a few more drinks of water. On a whim, he decided to lay down on the cot. It was pretty comfortable, or at least, more comfortable than the floor. His hours of walking began to catch up to him. Maybe he needed a break after all. It would be stupid to fall asleep, but just laying around in here couldn't hurt, right?

Evander lay back on the cot, hands beneath his head. It was a bit cool for his tastes. He took off his cloak and wrapped himself in it like a blanket. There, that was better. Evander relaxed for a few minutes, before quickly growing restless. Blech, this was too boring and useless. Evander threw off his cloak and stood up. He should get going. He pinned the cloak back on, picked up his sword, and opened up the door on the other side of the safe zone. Evander looked through, and he could see nothing. He blinked a few times. Great. Now his eyes had to adjust to the dark again. Evander stretched, then stepped into the darkness. He shut the door behind him so that his eyes could adjust faster. Man, he could barely even see his hand in front of his face. If anything wanted to attack, now would be the time to do it. A clacking sound came from his right. Evander threw up his sword in a defensive guard. Of course, just as he thought it, something had to come up to him. Oh well. There was a slight chance it was a player, but that was close to nil, as this was the first dungeon, and who would train in the first dungeon when there were much better hunting grounds elsewhere? Whatever. He would be able to tell if this was a player if it attacked first. Or, it could be a player killer, some insane nutjob that actually killed others, but why would anyone ever do that? Also, again, if they wanted to kill others like some murderer, why would they show up here, where there was practically no one? Well, whatever. All he could do was wait. Or, he could try talking to them, but whatever. He wasn't much for social conversations anyway.

Evander didn't move. Nothing was happening. He hoped his eyes adjusted soon. Suddenly, on instinct, Evander raised his sword, barely blocking a swing at his body. Well, this entity was a sword user, but that didn't really tell him much. The skeleton he fought earlier used a rusty sword. Though, any chance that this was a reasonable person was thrown straight out the window. Evander, quickly thinking, threw open the door to the safe zone to allow the light from within to illuminate the area he was fighting in. Well, as expected, it was another skeleton. Great. Well, this was another opportunity to gain some loot, so he couldn't complain too much. Also, these monsters were much stronger than the regular old mobs on the first floor, so he was getting some experience points as well. It was an acceptable situation. The only problem was that he didn't really feel like fighting it. Well, might as well get it over with quickly then, like ripping off a band-aid. Evander activated <Vertical Arc> again, and hoped he would be able to kill the monster quickly. Evander blinked a few more times. His eyes were still struggling to focus. His first slash missed. Well, that was a shame. Oh well. The skeleton slashed across his chest with its rusty blade, drawing a line of red pixels across his chest. His Thorns activated in retaliation. At least he couldn't get tetanus in the game. Probably. Even then, it would just be in his mind, not his actual body, unless some crazy guy decided to cut him in the real world with a rusty nail or something.

Evander hoped he was in a professional hospital, where nothing like being stabbed with a rusty nail would ever happen, but the truth was that they, in reality, didn't actually know where their bodies where. In fact, they could all be just disembodied minds, floating around in some digital world, while their real selves went about their daily lives. No one in here really knew. And great, now his thoughts had decided to ruin the mood by starting up some sort of existential crisis. Blech. These were never fun, especially alone, in the near darkness, fighting against some skeletons, with the threat of death always around the corner. Shoot, now he just made himself a little more terrified. He needed to focus on the skeleton in front of him. He had missed once, but he hoped he didn't miss again. Well, at least this time his attacks were actually worth something and he didn't just carry himself through the battle on his Thorns enchantment. Evander blinked a few more times, then focused intently on the skeleton. He cut down, activating <Vertical Arc> again, hoping he didn't miss this time. He managed to activate system assist correctly, and cut through the skeleton. It burst in a spray of particles.

Evander sighed. Cogito ergo sum. I think therefore I am. A quote from, uh, Descartes he believed? Evander kept repeating that to himself. Now was no time to have an existential crisis. Really, no time was ever time to have an existential crisis. Evander shut the door to the safe zone. His eyes adjusted to the dark. There, now he could see. Somewhat. He blinked a few times to make sure. Well, now it was time to see what he got from the monster. He walked over to claim his reward.

Obtained one mat.

Well, at least he got some bone powder thing that could be used as some reagent, maybe? It was better than nothing, he supposed. Evander continued on his way down the hallway. When he reached the end, it opened up into some sort of throne room. Or, not really a throne room, but more of some sort of feasting hall, with a grand chair at the head of the table, on the other side of the room. The table was bare, its wood cracked, and cobwebs lay over everything. Well, the designer of this room certainly succeeded at making this place look old and medieval. There was another door on the far wall, behind the large chair. Tapestries hung on the walls, like the other large room, but these were far too faded to be able to make out anything. However, one tapestry, above the door at the end of the hall, seemed to have withstood the test of time better than its brethren. It was too far right now to be able to see what was on there, but it was sure to be intriguing. Or, at the least, very artistic.

His footsteps reverberated off of the walls, echoing endlessly. He walked along the right side of the table, holding his sword up warily and turning his head every which way to ensure he was not ambushed or caught by surprise. Something about this room put him on edge, and no matter what mental tricks he used, he couldn't keep himself from jolting at the slightest sound or movement out of the ordinary. This room was simply unnerving, for some reason. Shoot, he thought he loved scary stories and situations. Perhaps he was a coward at heart. Well, he did just have a somewhat minor existential crisis, but still. He thought he was braver than that. He guessed that no one really knew what they were like in the dark. He tensed, and whirled around. Nothing was there. Nothing was out of the ordinary. So why did he feel so disturbed? Evander sighed, and walked briskly to the end of the room. The quicker he walked, the quicker he would be over with this room. He reached the large chair at the head of the table. He looked up, at the tapestry. It was a tapestry of some battle where there were some soldiers fighting a bunch of skeletons, but the soldiers were heavily outnumbered. The thing that really drew his eye though, were three long trails of blood smeared across the cloth of the tapestry. A chill ran down his spine. That did not bode well.

Bah, whatever, it was probably just some artistic touch added on by the designers to make this seem more creepy or something. Whatever. Nothing he needed to worry about, so no use in thinking about it. Yeah. Don't think about it. That was smart. Evander shuddered for a second before mastering himself, and moved on. He opened the door to the next area and peered in. More stairs. That was cool. Evander looked back for a second, then walked through the door. He shut it behind him. Hmm. Was it just him, or were there progressively less torches the more stairs he moved up? Whatever. He was fine. Evander looked around him, and- whoa, another bloodstain, okay he was really getting tense now. He knew these were just decorations (right?), and there wasn't even blood in this game, but still. Man, why was he being such a wimp? Evander shook his head, and took a few deep breaths. Okay. He started moving up the stairs slowly, making sure there weren't any traps or the like. His footsteps echoed off of the walls of stairwell. He reached another door, at the top. It had a bloody hand print on its wooden surface. Wow, they were really trying to go overboard with this blood thing, weren't they. It was almost over-dramatic, and too unrealistic. Then again, this was a game. It was to be expected in these kinds of things.

Evander opened the door and stepped forward into the room. In front of him were two branching hallways, both illuminated with numerous torches along its walls, though still not as bright as in the safe zone. It seemed the game was giving him a choice in which path he would like to take. How nice. He chose a path at random and continued walking. The walls reflected the light, appearing a warm red. Evander held up his sword. Places like these were always sure to have some monsters hidden up its sleeves. There were corridors that split off from the main one he was traveling on, which were barely illuminated by a few torches, but he ignored them. Actually, that was probably a bad idea, seeing as how any surprise ambushes from monsters were likely going to come from them. Evander began to look around him every few steps he took. Well, at least there weren't any more gaudy bloodstains, on the walls or otherwise. Evander continued to place one foot after another. The hallway seemed endless. After what felt like hours of walking, he eventually reached the end of the corridor. He was faced with another set of stairs. However, these seemed more grandiose than the ones before it. Perhaps this denoted he was near the end? He hoped so. He was kind of tuckered out from all of the walking.

He walked up the stairs. Each step he took seemed to carry a sense of finality. He didn't really know why, considering this was probably not even close to the end of the dungeon. He only spent, what, three hours in that corridor? Well, now that he was actually considering it, that was quite a bit of time, but still. People likely spent days in here, looking for the boss room, back when everyone was still stuck on floor one. Unless clearing the dungeon had actually simplified it somehow? Perhaps killing the boss led to the corridor becoming just a straight shot, with branches off so that later adventurers could still get loot from treasure chests and stuff. No one really knew. Well, asides from Kayaba, and maybe anyone else he told, and also any players that went into dungeons after they had been cleared, which was actually quite a lot of people. Perhaps he should revise his statement. Evander reached the end of the stairs. The first things he noticed were the two frankly huge braziers, with large, roaring flames coming out of them. The next thing he noticed was the huge door in between them, with strange archaic designs over its surface. Alright, it was pretty obvious this was the entrance to the boss room of the first floor. Somehow, someway, he managed to luck out into getting here. Well, that was always nice. Luck was good.

Well, nothing to it, he supposed. He was finally done. He could move on to the second floor now, through the boss room. He sure was glad he wasn't going to have to fight a boss or something, like the first explorers here had to do. They had already done all of the hard work for him. He just had to coast through the dungeon and leave. Evander felt kind of guilty, for some strange reason, but whatever. He was probably just guilty that he didn't help out, but that was why he was doing all of this training now, wasn't it? To be able to fight bosses and actually contribute to getting out of Aincrad. Evander stepped forward to the great double doors and slowly pushed them open. Man, these things were heavy. It was pretty hard to even budge them at all. Evander strained, and eventually opened up the doors enough to be able to allow him to slip through. He stepped into the boss room. So, this was where the first boss was fought. It was a throne room, with the aforementioned throne at the other end of the long hall. Torches lit up around the room as he stepped in. All in all, pretty cliche. There was a staircase behind the chair, leading up to a small door at the top. That was probably the entrance to the second floor. Well, that was great, all he had to do was walk up those stairs and he was- wait, wait, wait a second, was there something sitting on the throne?

Evander peered at the throne. It seemed like some shadowy figure was on the throne. Well, he didn't really expect any monster to be in the boss room, considering it was already cleared, but alright. He held his sword in a defensive stance. It was always good to have more training. The figure disappeared. Huh. Maybe he was just imagining things. It was probably just some shadow cast from the torches. Well, now didn't he feel stupid. It was probably just his nerves creating imaginary enemies. Evander lowered his sword and stepped forward. Just as his foot touched the ground, he saw a dark purple sword coming straight for his head. He barely fended it off with his own sword. Some sort of wraith or apparition was floating in front of him. Well, so he wasn't imagining things after all. That was good. The wraith let out an eerie cry, sending chills down his spine and causing him to break out into a cold sweat. Its red eyes began to glow, and it disappeared from sight. Holy cow, that thing was terrifying! It could disappear at will? The boss doors shut behind him. The wraith appeared again, swinging to decapitate him. Evander knocked the sword to the side and charged in, activating <Vertical Arc>. He cut two gashes into the wraith, red lines appearing on it. He didn't really know why his sword didn't just pass through it, but he was glad it didn't, because then he would be dead. It retaliated with a vicious cut to his right arm. He sure was glad he had his armor.

How come this monster was even here? Evander pondered this question while fending off a few random blows from the <Wraith King>. He grit his teeth. It was getting progressively harder to even defend himself. The blows seemed to be becoming more and more powerful. It obviously wasn't strong enough to be a floor boss. If it was a floor boss, he would be dead four times over by now. Perhaps it was some sort of remnant of the boss here or something? Perhaps it was just implemented by Kayaba so that players could still have a somewhat tough enemy to fight here in the boss room? Well, whatever, he didn't know and he would likely never find out. He was just extremely glad that his armor was very finely constructed so that the monster did minimum damage. He had a feeling that if he didn't have armor, he would be losing large amounts of health. Evander caught another strike on his sword, but instead of knocking it aside, he pushed back, against the wraith. After forcing himself a bit closer to the wraith, he knocked its blade aside and prepared another <Vertical Arc>. However, the wraith swung its sword back at him quickly, forcing him to call off the attack and block its strike. Evander tried pushing it aside again, but it wouldn't budge. The wraith began to push against him, pushing him back. Evander grounded his feet, but the wraith continued its inexorable push. Evander's back touched the door. Well, that wasn't good.

Evander's back pressed against the door. The wraith drew back its sword unexpectedly, and Evander stumbled forward. It drew back its sword for a killing blow to the heart. Oh, gosh. That wasn't good. The blade flew forward. Evander barely managed to roll to the side. The sword went into the door. Yikes, that wouldn't have been good for his body. Evander moved behind the wraith and raised his sword, planning to kill it with one last strike while it was getting its sword out from the wall. As his sword was coming down, it vanished. Right. He forgot it could do that. Its sword was gone from the door as well. Shoot. Evander stood still, trying to listen for any tell-tale sign or any displacement of air. He took a deep breath. Acting on instinct, his body whirled around to catch the wraith's blade with his own. Well, that was pretty cool. Though, it was probably just system assist or something, since he could never do that in real life. Evander forced its blade to the side and raised his own for another <Vertical Arc>. The wraith moved to the side, dodging his attack and messing up the system assist. It cut at him with his own blade, but he managed to block it. Shoot, soon he was going to run out of energy for his sword art.
