Little_Nepent.png

On the first floor, the player is given a quest that introduces them to 'Field Bosses'. The quest states that a small village is in need of a medicine, <Little Nepent's Ovule>, which is dropped by a special variant of the mob, Nepent. The players who partake in the quest must slay normal Nepents until a 'Variant Nepent' spawns. The Nepents spawn in the wooded area on floor 1.

The nepents stand at around a meter and a half tall. Its lower body consists mostly of countless roots that it uses to move around. It has two arm-like vines with pointed leaves attached to either side of its body, just above the roots. The center of its head holds a wide red mouth with viscous liquids dribbling out of it as it opens and shuts.

The variant has a red bulb on top of it's 'head' which reveals to be a giant red flower. Or it's decorated with fruit. Either way, it's the same as its counterpart in shape, size, and strength.

Alec awoke to a thin ray of light breaking through the curtains of his rented room in one of the Inns inside the Town of Beginnings. He was HOT!! Why was he so darn HOT?!? It was like he was fearing a giant heavy blanket. What was going on? Alec groggily opened his eyes and it all started coming back to him as he looked down and saw that he was a part of a massive pile of arms and legs some belonging to him the others to a large bear cub sharing the bed with him. Last night in the middle of the night Humphrey must have tired of sleeping on the floor and crawled into bed with him. He remembered having a nightmare of being trapped under a garbage can but when he’d awoke it had been Humphrey laying on his chest with one front paw draped over the side of the bed and resting on the floor.

Alec did his best to extricate himself from the horrendous tangle of his massive body and that of the not at all small bear cub who he found himself sharing a tiny bed with. If Alec had thought the bed cramped previously that was nothing compared to what he found himself a party to now. As Alec twisted and wormed to get free the bed and the bear cub residing there the bed elicited a sound like nothing he had ever heard before. Alec was sure beyond a shadow of a doubt that he and Humphrey were going to end up in a pile on the floor surrounded by the splintered remains of what had so recently been his bed. In response to his twisting and turning and the bed screamed in protest at the excessive amount of weight currently residing in it now. Humphrey announced his displeasure with Alec’s movements by letting out a long low grumble of a growl directed at Alec and his current choices.

“Oh come on now Humphrey.” Alec responded to the bear cubs noises of irritation and displeasure. “The suns up and it’s time we are too. Now get out of bed you lazy bones.” Alec ribbed as he poked the bear cub in the ribs non too gently. Humphrey responded by performing a roll akin to a summer salt and landed heavily on the wooden floor of the small room with a non too soft THUMP. Humphrey grumbled and growled some more as he began to move around twisting and turning. “Ha! I see I’m not the only old man around here.” Alec guffawed as he too began to roll his shoulders around hearing and feeling a  grinding sensation as his shoulders reset themselves. Next he spread his arms out wide as if trying to take flight and felt a solid pop in his sternum. Lastly he bent forward at the waist and felt every vertebrae in his spine pop as they each realigned themselves individually.

With his morning stretches and readjustments out of the way Alec stood up straight and looked at Humphrey who was now seated on the floor with his front legs spread straight out in front of him and his front paws resting on the floor as he looked at Alec quizzically with his head cocked to one sire. “Hey, I’m and old man and stuff gets stiff and out of position when I sleep especially in such a small bed and ESPECIALLY when I got a big ole bear sleeping on my chest you, you, something…..” Alec trailed off not sure how to finish his statement. Instead he just walked over and scratched Humphrey on the back of his neck and behind his ears. Then Alec stopped and looked around his tiny room with a series of deep breaths. Well here we go again Alec thought to himself with a wry smile. Then it struck him even given the outlandish circumstances of this mornings debacle he still hadn’t woken up irritate like he always did since being here. Humphrey really was good for him he thought to himslef with a smile.

Alec reached out his hand and with a quick downward swipe he opened his inventory and began looking through his items there in. As he perused his items within his inventory he stopped and tapped the icon for his brown pants. Then he moved the items list till he found his sturdy brown leather boots. Finally he scrolled through the list till found his vanity bear skin shoulder wrap and selected that as well. All the items shimmered and coalesced into being in their assigned places on his body. Fully clothed now Alec ran his hand over his smooth bald head and drug his fingers throw his bushy salt and pepper beard a few times. His morning rituals complete Alec looked to Humphrey and asked “So? How do I look?” Humphrey responded with a a growl and a grumble that sounded amazingly like a mocking version of what Alec had just asked him. Alec stopped dead in his tracks and stared at the bear cub in shock. “Hey there Mister.” Alec stated in a firm tone of voice. “There’s no reason to be snarky. What say we go downstairs and get some breakfast to start this day off right?” This time Humphrey’s growl and a rumble sounded very positive. Alec smiled as he walked over to the door which lead to the hallway beyond.

Alec wrapped his large hand around the door knob and turned pulling the door open to reveal the hardwood floored hallway beyond. Ale stepped out into the hall his boots echoing heavily off the hardwood floors and walls. He waited just out side the room for Humphrey to pad outside and began walking down the hall toward the stairway that led to the common room below. Alec closed the door behind them and followed the bear cub through the hall to down the stairs. Alec’s boots thumping and echoing with heavy sounds as the bear cub made no noise as it passed through the hall and down the stairs. As the exited the confined stair well the emerged into the Inns common room below. Alec strode purposefully across the room to an empty table sitting alone. Alec pulled the chair out from under the table and received a loud SCRATCH as the legs drug against the hardwood floor.

Alec lowered his massive frame into the wooden chair and received his customary warning CREAK as he the chair protested to his larger than average size and weight. Alec sat quietly observing those around him in the common room as the Innkeeper arrived and took Alec’s order for breakfast for himself and Humphrey Alec couldn’t help but notice that there seemed to be slightly more chatter than on previous mornings. The thought intrigued Alec. Soon there after Alec’s and Humphrey’s breakfasts arrived and as the as enjoying their food Alec overheard something he had never heard in the common room before. A pair of men at the next table over were discussing a small town on the Eastern edge of the forest between the forest and the lakes region. Alec had seen the village on his map before it didn’t seem to have a name but Alec had never been sure if that was because he was doing something wrong or the town just actually had no name.

It seemed this town was greatly in need of some sort of medicine called <Little Nepents Ovule>. Alec had never hear of any such medicine so he assumed it was something strictly limited to this game and had no relation or bearing to anything in the real world. The men continued to discuss that this particular medicine was only dropped by a variant of mob called the Nepent. As Alec continued to listen he hear from the men that Nepents were apparently a plant based creature that stood about a meter and a half tall. Their lower body sounded like it consisted of a multitude of roots that it used to propel itself along the ground. From what Alec overheard the creature also possessed two vine like arms that ended in pointed leaves. The center of the Nepent’s head sounded like it possessed a wide red mouth that dribbled viscous liquid of some sort. Not an overall appealing picture in Alec’s opinion but this was a video game after all the game designers were bound to let their creativity run wild at times and create many things never before seen in real life.

As Alec finished his meal and sipped at his coffee he continued to overhear that there was a variant Nepent that had a red bulb or flower on top of its head otherwise it was exactly the same as the regular version of the Nepent. As Alec finished sipping on his coffee and the men finished talking Alec heard a chime and a banner popped up in his vision <ACCEPT QUEST - SECRET MEDICINE??> Alec humpfed and looked down at Humphrey not sure if he could see the banner too or if it was just Alec. “So Humphrey. What do you think? A small town nearby needs medicine and they need someone to find it for them. Sounds exactly like what we were both made for but if we’re going to do it I want your opinion too and though I want to help them I won’t do it unless you’re on board with me. We’re a team and we both need to be on the same page.” Humphrey looked up at Alec and stood letting out a low affirmative growl as he turned toward the common rooms door and began to walk.

“Whoah there big guy.” Alec said as he stood from the chair eliciting a CREAK and a SCRATCH as he lifter his massive frame with his tree trunk like legs. The banner moved with Alec’s movements staying in the center of his vision. Alec reached out and tapped the accept icon and there was a celebratory chime as the banner changed to <QUEAT ACCEPTED> and a tiny icon appeared on Alec’s HUD map in the vicinity of the small town Alec had previously spotted. Alec judged by its distance it would take them to about mid day to reach the town so it wasn’t terribly far Alec supposed. Alec’s booted feet thumped heavily as he quickly walked across the common room floor to catch up to Humphrey who was already nearing the door and stopping looking over his shoulder at Alec and grumbling a low growl. “I’m coming, I’m coming.” Alec replied as he reached Humphrey.

Alec reached out and grasped the door handle in his large fist and turned the knob opening the front door of the Inn to the outside. Alec looked through the open door to the street outside the Inn. Humphrey brushed past Alec and walked through the door into the street beyond shutting the door to the Inn behind himself. He took three large steps and caught up to Humphrey walking beside the bear cub easily. The two made their way side by side down the street towards the Northern Gate of the Town of Beginnings. A natural bubble formed around the pair as they made their way through the streets. What a pair they made Alec thought to himself with an amused inward smile a giant of a man and an American Black Bear Cub walking side by side. Just a big man and his big big dog out for a mutual walk.

Alec and Humphrey made their way through the streets and soon found themselves in the large courtyard just inside the Northern Gate of the Town of Beginnings. People milled around and murmured discussions amongst themselves as the pair reached the courtyard. Once they arrived Alec looked to Humphrey and said "Now give me a minute I need to get geared up before we leave the safe zone in case we run into anything." With that Alec reached out and swiped down opening his inventory again to access his items listed within. Aleve scrolled through his list at the growing amount of items contained within with s pleased smile. It wasn't so ling ago he was unable to figure out how to even open his interface and access his inventory much less access it or move items around. Now he at least felt like had some semblance of understanding and floundering quite as badly as he had before. A lit still eluded him he was sure but he was slowly getting his sea legs under him.

As Alec scrolled through his inventory he stopped at his Adamantine Pauldron and tapped the icon for it his heavy metal shoulder guards appeared resting on his shoulders with their leather straps securing them to his body and the thick metal belt encasing his waist and midsection. The Adamantine metal that made his shoulder pads was a dark green that was so dark as to appear nearly black and were incredibly dense offering massive amounts of protection. They also provided a faint tingle as they recharged a small amount if Alec's spent energy. It was sort of like he head buzz you got from the days first cup if coffee but whenever he wore the heavy armor piece and their special ability functioned. Alec rolled his shoulders in several circles of varying sizes and twisted and turned at the waist enduring the piece was fitted securely and properly which if course it was.

Next Alec scrolled through his list if items contained within his inventory and stopped when he found his Shield of the Thunderhearts. He reached out and tapped the icon for it causing his trusty and beloved shield to appear strapped firmly to his left arm. The shield had a beveled edge and a very cool lightning pattern engraved on the front if it. Alec gazed over its unblemished surface with love and affection. This shield had done some amazing things for Alec and he looked forward to many more in his future. As his eyes roamed over the shields surface they were eventually drawn as always to the back if the shield that faced him. Their was an inscription engraved on the inside facing him that read "When the tides rise, become the storm." As it did every time he read the inscription the words brought a tingle to his body and a light layer if goose bumps prickled up over his body and a sense of purpose filled his heart and soul.

Finally Alec scrolled through his list of items contained within his inventory and stopped when his found his Mithril Battle Axe. He reached out his finger and touched the icon that represented his much loved axe. The touched the icon for it and his weapon shimmered and wavered into being held firmly in his large fist. The weapon really was quite beautiful to behold. It had soft gentle angles and lines that flowed smoothly along the weapons length. The finish if the axe was a highly polished mirror like finish. The metal resembled a solid form of mercury of quicksilver, its sheen that of highly polished chrome. The Battle Axe was a thing if beauty to behold and was a piece if deadly art that belonged in a museum as well as wielded on combat. It was in essence a beautiful irony a piece of art and beauty designed for war and destruction. Alec took a few slow controlled practice swings with the axe before placing it in the loop at his hip.

The lady thing Alec did as he scrolled through his items listed within his inventory was to select the items that would fill his Battle Ready slots. He had five slots he could fill and each slot could hold up to two of the same item. Alec selected two of his Tier on Healing Potions and placed them in his first available Battle Ready slots. The potions were listed as healing fourty hit points per use. With as little damage as he'd taken so far in the First Floor plus having Humphrey now trained to heal him Alec didn't feel the need for any additional healing items. These two were a last ditch safety net in case all went sideways and he found himself in too deep which he didn't see happening today. He looked at the other potions and consumables that he had inside his inventory. He didn't think he'd need any additional damage as he'd just increased his skill recently. He wanted to test it out before he looked for damage improving routes. He also didn't think he'd need a boost to his hit points today or any additional Energy recovery so he passed over those items as he continued to look through his inventory for any others he thought might prove useful today. As he scanned the list if items he couldn't find anything else that he thought he would need so he closed his inventory and looked to his companion and best friend Humphrey. "Well pal, I think I'm ready. What do you say? Ready to head out and help out a village in need?" Humphrey looked up at Aleve and stood onto his hind two legs and let out a bellowing growl if ascent before dripping back into four legs and padding out the Northern Gate and into the grasslands beyond.

Humphrey looked to Alec and stood up on his back legs bringing him to just below the big man's eyes and growled out a loud affirmative to his question. Humphrey wanted to help people and he had sensed from Alec's mood that there was something that needed to be done and it involved people that needed their help. The bear cub felt a surge and welling deep within itself at the thought of people in need. Then he dropped back onto all fours and began to walk through the giant cave entrance that stood between the open air man cave and the grassy lands between it and Humphrey's forest. The bear cub stepped out into the prairie and felt the sun's warmth beat down on him and warm his fur. It felt good to be back out if the cave if men. Humphrey liked Alec but wasn't so fond of being trapped inside with all the other people. Alec's cave was nice though, it was small but not too small and Alec's spot for sleeping was very soft and enjoyable. But all in all Humphrey was happy to be outside and doing something if importance.

Alec followed Humphrey out the Northern Gate of the Town of Beginnings and into the grasslands beyond. The sun instantly started beating down in him and warmed his flesh with its bright warming rays shining down. Aleve smiled and inhaled deeply as he left the Town of Beginnings behind and stepped into the prairie. He really did enjoy being outside the Town. He always felt so cramped and restricted when he was inside the walls. Wether it was from all the people packed in like sardines everywhere or something else he couldn't put his finger on he wasn't quite sure but he was never able to fully relax even though it was marked as a safe zone and technically the safest place he could be Alec was still never able to relax and feel at ease there. Here outside the Town in the wide open wild lands Alec felt at peace and at one with himself. Maybe he was beginning to draw on his ancestors Viking roots. Or maybe he just disliked all the people who knew. Not Alec, that was for sure.

Alec and Humphrey both walked along through the high grasses of the prairie smiling contentedly at their general surroundings. The day was beautiful in all actuality. The sun shone down warming their skin. There was a gentle breeze blowing that kept them from getting too hot. The breeze also carried if faint hint of pine from the forest and slight trace of lilac from some of the wild flowers growing hidden amidst the tall grasses surrounding them. It really was a nice day Alec thought as he continued to walk along taking in all the sights and sounds around him. As Alec walked the lowered his hand and splayed out his fingers running them along the tops of the grass blades their tips softly tickled the hard rough callouses of Alec's hand. Alec found himself day dreaming as he walked taken back to a warm Summer day not unlike this one he had experienced in his childhood back home in the real world.

Alec and Humphrey continued their trek across the prairie. As the walked a thought came to Alec and he began searching through the tall grasses as he walked. "Why waste a good opportunity that he could use to see if there were any Tier 1 Materials in the area." Alec thought to himself as he began moving the tall grasses aside as he peered down to earth below the grasses seeing if any treasures of crafting materials were hidden in their depths.

As Alec poked and prodded through the tall grass of the prairie he found absolutely nothing of interest or value. Finding nothing of any interest or value in the tall grass Alec picked up his pace and caught up to Humphrey and joined him as the pair continued their pleasant morning walk through the grasslands of Floor One. Alec's hand absently found the back of Humphrey's neck and he began scratching the bear cub as he walked along and his thoughts drifted other places and times.
