Disgusting. Heinous. Who could dream up such a catastrophic scene? Dederick had been told in the past that all things within the realm of Aincrad were controlled by the game's god - Cardinal. Clearly it was a vengeful god.

Dederick wasn't usually one to revolt against a higher power, but the scene that was unfolding before him was something that needed to be put to an end. He opened his menu and navigated to the inventory panel, scrolling until he found the Funnel Cake he had purchased from the concession stand. It probably wasn't wise to eat something that a greasy chuckling clown had delivered to you with bare hands, but the buffs were something that Dederick needed to take advantage of.

Once that was finished, he drew his sword and shield and started toward a shambling pair of husks that had just wandered into the tent. It was time to test his mettle.

When he approached the Zombies, it didn't take long for them to take notice. They immediately craned their necks and stared into him, their eyes emitting a red glint to signal that their aggro had been drawn. Dederick readied his shield and prepared for their attacks, opting not to deliver a strike of his own to start. "By the time this is over, my blade will be painted with your cold blood and you will be rendered asunder to return to the bowels of your corrupt god. Come at me with everything you've got."

The exanimate husks screeched in response, shifting their shambling to close the distance between themselves and Dederick. It was finally time to see what these cretinous vermin were capable of. Judging by the red hue of their stats, Dederick had a feeling they were probably designed to easily kill players of his caliber. But that wasn't going to stop him from at least trying to take a few down with him.

That being said, they certainly were... slow. Extremely slow. Dederick had expected to be locked into harrowing and gripping combat by now. Instead, he stood silent with his shield raised, peering into the crimson eyes of his adversaries as they struggled toward him with every step they took. It was a pitiful sight. Assuming they weren't simply spawned this way, these were at one point people. With dreams and aspirations, families, businesses. They could play, run, exercise, and work. Now they could barely hobble their way toward a stationery target.

Dederick felt the impulse to dash forward and carve into them in an effort to end the very long pause before their battle, but knew that rash behavior like this would be his undoing. Instead, he remained still and patiently waited for them to approach, unyielding in his resolve to study their patterns and look for weak points. This was how he would win.

Then the time finally came. They reared back their ragged claws, came in for the attack, and... Dederick was easily able to avoid it. It seemed that their attacks were just as clumsy and slow as their mobility. Dederick was feeling pretty good about himself until one of the Zombies spun around with unprecedented speed and carved a gash along his abdomen, depleting his HP by a third instantly. He hadn't even had time to ready his shield in preparation for the attack.

Pure insanity. Had they been toying with him the entire time? Acting slow and run down in an attempt to get him to lower his defenses? No matter what their ambitions were, it had worked. Dederick held his stomach as he took a few steps back, anticipating blood to pour into his hand. But there was no blood, not even a sensation of true pain. He was relieved to remember that he was in nothing more than a virtually rendered fake of a world.

Despite his best efforts to put some distance between himself and his opponents, they were quick to close that distance and level another succession of attacks against him. He managed to put his shield up, but one of the Zombies hooked its hand around the shield and gashed the arm that was carrying it, ripping the shield out of the way and leaving him wide open to more attacks. Rather than take a simple step backward, Dederick leapt back and immediately opened his Battle-Ready Inventory, grabbing one of the Spider Ciders he had purchased earlier and downing it as quickly as he could.

He felt his vitality returning, but Dederick was quickly realizing that engaging with these Zombies had been a mistake. With their aggro drawn, there was little he could do to remove himself from the situation now. He was going to need to suck it up and press on, trying his best to find some way to render these ghouls to azure dust.

It was time to counterattack. Dederick had wanted to take a more measured approach with these sacks of putrid defilement, but if we didn't start swinging soon, he wouldn't have the time. He dashed forward as his sword began to glow, yelling out as he hung the blade in a wide arc that connected with both of his targets. Satisfied with the attack, he jumped backward yet again to put some distance between himself and the Zombies, as well as behold the fruits of his efforts.

Negligible. The damage he had inflicted was practically negligible. A feeling of hopelessness slowly started crawling its way up his spine as he took in the sight of their health bars, barely depleted whatsoever. How much damage had he dealt? Ten percent, maybe? So he would need to attack them ten times each in order to finally bring them down? It was madness. Complete and utter lunacy.

What was worse was that his energy had been entirely depleted with that single attack. He opened up his Battle-Ready Inventory once more and selected one of the Offbrand Energy Drinks, cracking it open and consuming the liquid as quickly as he could. And wow, was it horrible. Dederick had never drank an energy drink in his entire life, and apparently he hadn't been missing out. How were these so popular? Why would someone willingly consume this? In Dederick's case, it was necessary to keep the fight going.

As soon as he had managed to finish drinking the beverage, the Zombies were upon them. One of their strikes he avoided with ease, while he managed to catch the other's attack with his shield. His eyes widened as he watched its health bar deplete to near half as a response. Of course, it was the Thorns Enhancement. How could he had forgotten? So foolish.

It seemed that the Zombie that had struck his shield and taken some damage as a result was not thinking twice before attacking him again. The other Zombie seemed to be following in its example, keeping its distance from Dederick in an attempt to not suffer the power of his thorns. It seemed that Dederick's defense was going to be his best offense in this fight. Unfortunately, that meant that he was going to need to continue taking damage from them in order to deal it back. It was quite the unique quandary.

But he had dealt with similar situations in the past. If he needed to take damage in order to deal it, fine. He could live with that. He had the supplies he needed to survive the undead onslaught anyhow. And so long as they permitted him to take the occasional break like this, he didn't see a problem with it.

While it had seemed that before they were apprehensive about clashing with Dederick again, that fear had now subsided and they were coming in full force. Luckily, Dederick's energy had recovered to the point that he could issue a counterattack this time. So he swung his charged blade forward, managing to strike one of the Zombies directly in the face. The second, however, managed to slip past the attack and carve its nails into his face, leaving several slash marks behind that revealed his crimson and gridded inside. He doubled back, cursing his luck in that not only had he missed one of his targets, but the other had evaded his shield and thus the Thorns damage that it rightly deserved. Try as he might, there was still much he had to learn about the endeavors of combat in this world. He was still nothing more than novice at best.

His health was once again reaching a dangerously low point. Considering that neither of these Zombies had dealt any less than a quarter of his HP in damage so far, and he was now at less than half, he needed to recover. If he got cocky and didn't, they could wipe him out with two more well-placed attacks. So he opened up his Battle-Ready Inventory and selected one of the Spider Ciders he had, downing the concoction in a few mighty gulps before turning his attention back to the Zombies to contend with whatever they had decided to level against him this time.

He had finished the consumable just in time, as they had already closed the distance once more. He held up his shield and allowed their claws to scrape against the smooth steely surface of the shield, the Thorns that lined it bouncing damage right back in their direction.

It seemed, however, that their damage could still leak through the shield and sap some of Dederick's HP away. Which he found peculiar. How would the developers reason such a thing as possible? It just didn't really seem to compute. But if that was how the game worked, then that was how the game worked. Dederick dealt the best damage he possibly could against these mobs by taking damage, so he was willing to accept that and continue along with the fight.

He downed another Spider Cider before readying his shield once more in preparation for the next wave of attacks. Just in time, too, from the looks of it. They both closed in and the trio repeated the same dance from just moments before - with their claws scraping against his shield and damage being dealt back at them. There was a difference this time, however, in that one of the Zombies finally succumbed to the damage and blew up into a cloud of blue pixels.

With one Zombie out of the way and the other hanging by a thread, Dederick thought that it would be a good opportunity to ready his blade and score the final bits of damage necessary to bring the creature down. But as soon as he moved his shield out of the way, the Zombie leveled another attack toward him, raking its claws against his chest and leaving a large crimson gash in their wake. Dederick watched as his HP dipped into the red, and knew that if he didn't take the time to recover his health, he would be facing certain termination.

So he leapt back and accessed his Battle-Ready Inventory all in one clean motion, a Spider Cider materializing in his hand as he landed. He downed the beverage quickly, restoring all of his lost HP and readying his blade once more. "It's time we put an end to this. You, who cannot hope to defeat me, should simply perish before suffering any longer. You deserve the sweet release that death should offer you. Begone, pestilent one."

Unfortunately, this was one of those situations where Dederick would be forced to eat his words. He had gained access to a new Sword Skill recently; Snake Bite. It promised high damage against a single target in exchange for slightly higher damage output. He figured it was perfect for this situation, considering these Zombies seemed to have high enough mitigation that his usual area of effect Sword Art would be rendered virtually useless.

And so he charged up his attack, dashed forward, and missed entirely. He couldn't believe that it had happened. As though suddenly gripped by above-par agility, the creature nimbly maneuvered through the onslaught of swipes and jabs, pivoting around Dederick before raking its razor sharp claws against his back. He gasped as the attack sank in and he saw his HP begin to dwindle once more. Leaping forward and turning to face his opponent, he found that it was chuckling at him. Laughing. As though it knew what it had just done.

"I don't understand. These creatures seem to get bursts of speed from seemingly nowhere. How is this possible?"

The inquiry seemed to provoke more laughter out of the monster, it's unhinged jaw dangling lower than Dederick was comfortable with as the morbid scratchy chuckling escaped its raw vocal chords. Of course it wasn't going to offer him an actual response. No mob in Aincrad ever would. Still, Dederick found its pre-programmed laughter extremely annoying and jarring. It felt like it was coming from directly within his own gray matter.

"Silence, pest," Dederick demanded. Miraculously, the creature actually stopped laughing for a moment. "You not of which the power you trifle with. You fight not only against me, but against the will of God. Should he permit it, I will find you smote and your cold blood stained against the steel of my blade." This, of course, only made the Zombie laugh even harder than before.

"Enough! Be silenced at once, vermin!"

With that, Dederick leapt forward and poured his energy through the hilt and into his blade. With a mighty roar, he craved Stormcaller into the undead with a trio of clashes, depleting its HP meter to zero and ultimately causing the mob to erupt into a shower of polygonal blue fractals, which got carried away on a light gust of wind that blew through the tent and scattered into oblivion.

Finally, it was done.

A loot panel populated in front of Dederick and he took a moment to inspect it before dismissing the window. He couldn't believe that it had taken so long just to slay two of these things. How were the others in this 'event' faring? He knew that he was under leveled, but certainly the other had to be struggling as well, right?

A cursory glance around the tent made Dederick conclude that he was alone in this. Perhaps it was bad luck, or perhaps God had intended for this to be a challenge for him. Either way, other players were destroying the mobs with ease all around him.

With a moment to breathe finally offered to him, Dederick opened up his inventory and inspected its contents. His Battle-Ready Inventory in particular had been ravaged by the battle, and only a single Spider Cider remained. It was fortunate that he had chosed to pick some of those up; surely he would have perished early into the fight without them. He moved four Spider Ciders from his ordinary inventory into his Battle-Ready, along with a singular Offbrand Energy Drink just to make sure that he would be fully stocked for the next encounter.

He then took another of the Offbrand Energy Drinks in his inventory and populated it into the overworld, closing his nostrils with his fingers before downing the entire drink in as few gulps as he could manage. Once finished, he coughed and tossed the can away, doing his best not to hurl up everything he had just consumed.

He also took a moment to change his equipment. Not wearing his armor had been extremely foolish, and it had almost led to his demise.

It was a good thing that he had taken the time to sort out his inventory and replenish some of his energy, because the next wave of Zombies was upon him much quicker than he had bargained for. He looked over the next pair of Zombies with disdain, wiping any excess energy drink off of his face with his sleeve. Rather than wait for them to approach, this time he wanted to go on the offensive first.

He dove forward with his sword charged, ripping into the first of the pair three times in rapid succession. The unfortunate thing about being caught up in a Sword Art was that you couldn't stop once you had started. Because of this, he was unable to avoid a strike from the second Zombie that was standing by, managing to land a crit against him and deplete his health bar to nearly the halfway point. How silly of him to have attacked only one when there were two before him.

But in the end, that was fine. He had changed his armor for a reason - he didn't want to have to worry so much about counterattacks. Or at least not to the same degree that he had with the last batch of Zombies. Rather than clumsily attack again and lose even more footing, he decided to simply pull up his shield and pray that it would be enough to stave off the damage headed his way from their next succession of attacks.

Unfortunately, the shield didn't do very much for him. One of the Zombies simply clawed his arm out of the way, while the other scored a direct hit against his torso. If not for the defensive and healing properties of the armor he had equipped, he was certain he would be in a bad way right now. But the switch in armor had been a good call, and as a result he survived the attacks with plenty of HP to spare, ready for the next round of combat.

Now that he knew he had his defenses sorted out, Dederick finally felt confident that he could transition into the offensive. Pouring verdant energy into his blade, he dashed forward toward the Zombie that had more health, carving into it with a trio of rapid strikes. The Zombie doubled back and groaned loudly, clearly stunned by the maneuver and requiring a moment to recuperate. The other Zombie, however, was ready to come in for the kill.

Dederick managed to catch the attack with his shield, and watched with delight as the equipped flashed with a blue energy that then transferred into the mob and sapped away the remainder of its HP. The loot panel that populated afterward was less than spectacular, but Dederick didn't exactly have the time to sit around and inspect it anyway. Instead he poured his energy into into preparing for the next round of combat against this fiendish foe.

Speaking of energy, he was fresh out. That last attack had sapped away whatever remainder of energy he had remaining, and now he couldn't so much as peform a basic attack anymore. No matter, this wasn't a problem since he had Energy Drinks to keep him going. But you know what? He hated the way that those tasted. So he figured that instead of focusing on recovering his energy right away, he would down a Spider Cider first so he could regain any lost vitality and approach the fight with the confidence that he needed.

On second thought, no. Recovering energy should come first. It was what made the most sense. And so he opened up his Battle-Ready Inventory and produced an Offbrand Energy Drink, cracking it open and gulping down its contents. When the zombie approached for another strike, he simply held up his shield and allowed his Thorns Enhancement to work its magic.
