[F02][SP] Breaking the Unbreakable

Recommended Posts

The humor of the situation escaped her, but she assumed the she was just glad to be still functional. The people who came yesterday to break the rocks had long since left and a bunch of garbage was in their wake. She just had to hope that she would clean more messes than were made today. She walked in and almost immediately fell over some garbage that hadn’t made its way to the bin. She fell right on her back and barely managed to get back to her feet oh so slowly, groaning and grunting as her back ached and stabbed. This had been a costly task to accept. She hoped the payout was going to be more than nothing.

She saw a bunch of junk on the ground and normally she might have walked over it but she decided not to. She went around and tidied it up. Nobody else was in this building so she could basically do this job however she wanted. She walked around and grabbed a broom when she found one. Only after tidying up a bit did she punch the rock again. Hey a crit!

She felt like she was doing more cleaning than anything else as she pushed the broom around, occasionally looking over at the many cracks that were starting to form and becoming more apparent every fifteen minutes or so. She'd walk over every so often and punch the rock again, sighing as she did hardly any damage to it again. She was just burning time but she was also making progress. Most of the garbage had been cleaned up by now. It was pretty easy to do this charity service she was doing, well she called it a charity service for how little reward she was going to get out of all this. Hardly anything, if anything at all. She just wanted to do this hard worker routine until someone else showed up. She was hoping nobody would show up at all because she wanted to focus on other things in the mean time.

Striking the rock once again, she sighed and looked out at the horizion. What a day this had been. She had gone around and done so many chores that she really just wanted to sit down and enjoy a nice cup of soup over by a fireplace. But she rarely got what she wanted. So here she was, in a martial arts setting after having been told that she was going to have to break this rock without knowing how. She smiled out at all the stars that looked back at her. What did she know about punching rocks? Nothing. Nothing worth mentioning. She walked up and down the path, pretending like she was practicing or something but she wasn’t really. She was just here to spout some knowledge and be on her way. She just wanted to get out of here, or maybe meet someone interesting. It was hard to do either of those when you spent all your time busying yourself with personal activities.

She looked out at the rock after some time and saw that there was a man sitting out there. He was about average height for a boy, she guessed, maybe a little short but he did look young. It was probably the one who was supposed to help her out. Not with the quest, but in general. “Hey, mind doing a demonstration or two? I’m afraid I’m not the right person for this job. The name’s Hinatao by the way. What’s yours?” She wanted to be polite, especially since she was going to be mooching off of this guy’s demonstration. She currently lacked much of anything that could be used as a demonstration or anything that might be useful in a fight. The man walked up, smacked his own rock and it crumbled in one blow. It seemed impossible. Hinatao tried breaking her own rock with the same vigor. Three damage. Not bad

One more punch. She whacked the rock, seeing that its health was less than half now. She had her wits about her, but that was about it. She went back to the man and said, “be my special guest today, since I wanted you to get a demonstration. Not sure I understand it either but that’s what I got in store for you. Introducing…” she glanced at the name that the game told her was his, “Kuro!” she felt sweat trickle down her neck. This was too much pressure for her to handle. Why was she doing this rock smacking thing again? It irritated her to no end that this was basically a big time sink.

The wind blew and knocked over some of the work she had accomplished today after she had spent most of the morning cleaning up people’s messes. Being a janitor wasn’t exactly the most glamorous job even if it was an odd job.

But what choice did she have? She relied on this kind of questing to live. She whcaked the rock again for another sweet one damage. she walked around a litlte after that. It was odd that she kept coming across dead rodents in the area. It was like they had lived in a food shop that was setup in this building long ago and starved when everyone moved out. It wasn’t like she cared bout being around dead vermin, she was getting paid to wipe it all away anyway. She did mind when they spilled guts everywhere because that attracted a rancid smell that she still wasn’t accustomed to. One could never completely get such a smell out of their nose as it was nature telling them to not eat that disgusting pile of meat. She looked at the pile of what she assumed was three dead rodents and felt vomit come up into her throat which she spit out promptly. She imagined that only a sick game creator could program all this in.

One more strike on the rock. Another damage. Maybe twenty or so strikes before she could go home. In the mean time she could get to cleaning up the rodents, someone came up to her. It looked like someone of status because he was dressed nicely considering the circumstances. They were in a pretty deslate place exept for the NPC and a couple players who finished the quest much faster than her which was her preference and why she took these kinds of quests. She much preferred to keep away from people when she was doing this kind of work in case she needed to take a nap, or if something happened that she didn’t want to take accountability for. There were other reasons that she need not even think about but the fact of the matter was that she didn’t want to be disturbed on a task when she didn’t want to speak to anyone.

She ran away, not wanting to draw attention. She circled around to the rock and hit it again. Two damage this time, that was one of the highest hits she got so far. She shrugged and came back to try cleaning up a bit and the man was still there. The man spotted her almost instantly even though she tried to hide. He claimed responsibility for putting poison out to kill the rodents and was just checking up on how it worked. Interestingly enough, she was interested in poisons enough to know that she wanted to learn how to use them more. He explained to her the herbs that he had put together and the cheese type that he used to lure them to the deadly herbs. She doubted she could memorize all of this detailed info when she thought about it. She had bleed and paralyze but poison too? She guessed she knew how to make a poison brew with her alchemy…

She took a quick break from her conversation that the man understood. She ran back to the rock and planted her fist in it once more. She could tell that she was doing some damage even if each consecutive hit didn’t show much progress. Then she jogged back to the guy who she left hanging. It seemed like that was enough of chit chatting. She didn’t want to get too friendly with this guy. In fact, she would prefer to keep a low profile when it came to important looking people. Attention was good, but too much attention was bad. She was not someone who wanted to have the spotlight and have their secrets revealed. She was being reserved if it weren’t obvious. Usually it was considered polite to introduce oneself before asking the name of another, but well, she wasn’t really one for etiquette when it wasn’t necessaryi fyou caught her drift.

“I’m going to clean up then, unless you wanted the bodies for some reason.” The man gave her a stern look as if something nasty had been insinuated but he shrugged it off as an antisocial’s mistake. He then shook his head to say, “I’m fine. You can get back to doing what you were doing. I’ll be around, examining other things. I’ll be out of your hair soon enough.” He went around examining various vermin corpses and being a general creep but before long he was indeed out of her hair it seemed. It allowed her to get back to sweeping and dusting but this time she couldn’t help but notice the smell of poison lingering in the air. She hoped it wasn’t dangerous. She decided to be safe even though the thought of a player’s poison was probably not dangerous to her and went back to the rock. She used her action to smack it again, doing three damage! Wow!

Punching the wall again, she was noticing that it only ahd twelve health left. That was cool, she could leave soon. She meandered back to the rodents that the man had killed. She couldn’t help but inspect the rodent bodies when she got out of eyesight of the strange man who dabbled with poisons. She could even see the traps that were laid out. They were covered in green pastey stuff that didn’t really have an offensive odor. If anything it smelled sweet and with the cheese it smelled delicious. She could definitely see how mice and rats got attracted to the stuff. She of course knew better than to try it, she didn’t want to meet an early grave. She didn’t really wait, instead she slowly started walking, feeling her movements twist and stretch her tummy with every step, causing stabs of pain again and again as the smell got even more rancid as she walked further along. She pressed a hand onto the wall as if it would help.

She circled around to hit the rock again because of course she had to do that while she wated her time with the vermin. She wanted to ignore that man too but oh who was she kidding, she wanted some kind of introduction. The man seemed too mysterious not to ask more information about him. Maybe he got this kind of attention all the time. She couldn’t help but ask him. She walked up to him asked him only to find out that his family died when he was young and he took up the family business of being an apothecary worker in real life. So naturally he loved poisons in the game. “Oh, you’re pretty important then. I can see why they hired you to come help out. Sorry to hear about your past though, it sounds pretty traumatic,” she couldn’t help but say when he had finished his speech

Hearing the story told her that even if you had a traumatic past you can still grow up to be a big shot and even retire. She heard someone else mention that the guy was dreamy. She heard the dreamy comment and she gave the student a look. Of course he was dreamy, for a teenager but now she was just being embarrassed. She shook her head with a little disappointment and couldn’t help but avoid the man’s eyes as she walked back to the rock and punched it again. Anyone with this kind of background was probably trustworthy. If he was dangerous he could have just used his poison knowledge to kill players. But hopefully he wasn’t that kind of player. She could only hope because there was only so much evil sh was willing to accept in this life. Only nine health left on the rock. Things were looking up.

Bored out of her mind, she decided to pick up a book and read it. This was called the “Tales of Amen.” She read about a man named Amen was born into the a loving family, which was a small one but it really didn’t matter much to him as it was his family, he was destined for greatness they said. The family culture was to normally had just a few children at any given time so he grew up with no real close friends his own age as the other children were many years older or younger so he really enjoyed the rare times when they would gather with others for parties as it gave him time to socialize with others his own age but this didn’t happen nearly often enough for his wants. She took a quick break from reading to punch the rock to make sure she was still on track.

She punched the rock again for good measure then went back to her book. Ah yes, about Amat. He often felt isolated and sheltered that gave him a thirst to find out what lay beyond the family as the stories and myths seemed to appeal to his innocent courage. His parents taught him how to do alchemy as they were alchemists, all the while teaching him all about the safety parts of it and rarely letting him do much freestyle mixing and such and how to honor his creations properly as they lived their lives. She read on about how Amen’s father taught him many things like how to use some ingredietns to make poisons and even a little bit of how to solve infestation problems. His Mother was often busy with the family dealings, although she did start instructing him on how to use a blade when she had time and as he grew strong enough to handle one properly.

She walked back over to hit the rock again. One damage whooo. Only six left as far as she could tell. She yawned, did she even want to finish this story book? She was mostly done with it by now. She swore and said okay, she’d finish it. The man named Men never cared for it though and the lessons were short and uninformative. Instead he found himself sneaking off a lot when his mother was looking for him so that he could have a few moments to himself. He got good at disappearing from his family at large which was for the best really. Amat’s mentor was a man who was deeply in love with his mother but she chose another man. The mentor was so spiteful that he vowed, secretly, to exact his revenge on her and her husband at all costs. He remained friendly to them though and gained their total trust. His manner of revenge was turning their child into the worst kind of killer as revenge.

More menial reading ensued as the man finally made his rounds and made his exit with a wave. The rock breaker was gone. She was almost done smashing her own rock. It just needed like a few more punches. She walked up to it and critted it like a boss. She wasn’t going to be seen around here again, she hoped. She also hoed she didn’t seem too interested or else he might have some lingering suspicions about her. It was a nice story, but in the end she still had some work to do. She got to her feet and looked around only to realize that there was so much cleaning and stuff to do that it wasn’t even funny. She did take some time to stretch and appreciate just how much time she had burned reading that little story book. But in the end she decided that she was better off doing what she was supposed to.

“who was that guy,” someone asked. “I dunno,” Hinatao said, “he sure liked to talk though,” when she walked over to punch the rock for the hundredth time. “Yeah, maybe he’s trying to impress you,” she said with a laugh, implying that he had the hots for her. She could see it happening, two starcrossed lovers bound by smashing a rock. But it was mostly a joke. “That’s my dad,” the little girl said surprisingly. “What?” she asked in response. She was bewildered. She would have been a lot more formal from the get go if she had known this information. “He must have a lot of expectations for you.” As if being stuck here wasn’t a reason to be guarded enough. She would have been mortified if she had to protect herself against people trying to get her for being important to her family. But that was that and she moved on.

A rock smashing quest wasn’t the most complicated of quests but it had the capability of being a real chore. She punched it one last time and she broke it for good. It really came down to if anything exciting happened or whether or not she got placed with a good group of people. The hard asses usually were the worst who didn’t let her slack at all and the ones that were too lackadaisical didn’t care to even do much of their jobs to begin with. So she crossed her fingers and made her way to the starting point of the patrol. She saw someone she knew in the distance. “Hi there,” she said, “nice seeing you again. Shall we get some dinner after you smash your rock?” it was a pretty nice spring day so hopefully people would be out enjoying the weather instead of causing trouble. She really did need a break after allthis rock hitting.

She didn’t have all that much left to do when things came down to it. She kicked the rocks on the ground and talked to the NPC who gave her the rewards she came here for. A new skill, that was neat but she didn’t know why she would need something like that. She took a stick on the ground in her hand and balanced it like it was a weapon. She was no great shakes at using a polearm but she had dreams of someday being competent in some kind of weaponry. She wrapped up here and went off to do whatever she wanted for the rest of the day. She hoped for a little more.. .excitement the next day. “what quest should I do next?” she echoed the question from a bit or so ago. “Simple. Self-interest. I have to do what will give me more power the quickest.”
