[F1-SP] <<The First Few Lessons Are Free>> No Need To Panic

Recommended Posts

Mason just stares up at the sky, completely unbothered by the giant red robed man floating in the air. He was saying something about a death game? Like, dying in the game means you die in real life, then he went into a bunch of techno mumbo jumbo that honestly flew over his head because that is not his vibe. The homeless yet not actually homeless man just rubs his eyes a bit - man, he's tired - three-fourths of the way through. A few more minutes as Mason continued to remain zoned out until people started in screaming in his ears. Some of them crying, some of them panicking, others just running off to do... whatever they were going to do, he doesn't care too much honestly.

He opens up his menu to see the log out button was removed. Neat. He wasn't lying after all. Welp. Off to do some freebie quests. What's the point of powergrinding, y'know? Take those free quests when you can get them, makes life a bit easier.

Let's see, pull up the map, beginner quest there... Welp, off we go.

With that, Mason just strolls on through the city as he does his best to protect his ears from all the people screaming and crying. Could they have not been so loud?

Man. This city is stupid huge. It's like real life except more interesting, though that might just be the fact that he's stuck here and could actually die to monsters that would not have existed in said real life... Tangent aside, Mason continues on the winding path towards Zackariah. A turn there, another turn to the right - You know, if this is a beginner quest, why is it not closer to the spawn point? This takes so much effort, jeez~ Another turn there, go straight forward, then do a u-turn because apparently the designer of this city thought it'd be funny if there was only one way to go in that direction. Finally, he ends up in front of a neat little shop that houses the questgiver - he yawns again, geez he's tired - and finally walks in.

Honestly, he really didn't give the place a good look over, he just walked over to the obvious NPC and accepts the quest. Can he skip the dialogue? Is there even dialogue to skip? Time to find out. The messy man just starts tapping random spots in the air as he yawns. "Welcome Traveler! It seems that you're new around here, mind-" Oh, he just found it. He proceeds to spam the button.

"I-" "You must-" "This lets-" "Potion-"

Yadda yadda, get on with it~ Mason appreciates the skip button. In fact, he appreciates it so much that he might even begin to worship it in all its glory- Oh. The dialogue is over. What was he supposed to do again? A pop up appears in front of him.

Honestly, it must be completely strange to see some man in rags wander the city. You wouldn't even think he was an actual person, but lo and behold, Mason is now an establish hobo-looking guy. Thankfully, this newfound title means people leave him alone. Which is great. Cause he's tired. And being tired and trying to talk to people is awful. Being tired also means that trying to find the quest location is kind of not fun- Oh, is that a park? A bit more excited than normal, Mason proceeds to powerwalk over to the park, fully intent on doing something that he loves doing!

By itself, the park is quite nice - though what's even better is the trees around it. Very quickly, Mason starts to patrol the park and investigating each individual tree. Some seemed to have sturdy branches but not enough of them. Other seem to have been grown out in a wacky manner that is not fitting for his purpose. Strangely enough, a few trees also seem to be extremely generic and hard to properly investigate - these trees kind of sucked honestly.

Hmm hmm hmm~ There we go. This is a good tree. He marks it on his map, and finally decides to go off and actually do his quest, though he seems a bit more pleased than he was before!

Thus, Mason arrives at the open plains - vast, lively, yet utter empty and devoid of anything living. Except for like, all the players that are running around picking up random quest materials a bit off in the distance. They don't count though. Though this does imply that they must have the same quest as he does then... Welp, you know what they say! The early bird gets the worm! Mason begins his grand adventure-

By walking. Very slow. At a leisurely pace. Because he can.

The early bird gets the worm, but the late bird... also... gets the worm? As Mason proceeds to confuse himself in his head, he can't help but honestly appreciate the scenery. He gotta hand it to the devs - didn't really expect an open world that's actually pretty and almost not empty. It honestly just makes him wanna go... slower- Is that a flower? I wonder what it would smell like. Wait, maybe this is one of those fantasy flowers. How would they even... I gotta try it. The hobo has now picked a flower and sniffing it as he continues to walk down the designated path.

This man knows how to enjoy life.

Neat!

image.png.154a0cd9cac2b795ba5ddcd7e6bac905.png

That was surprisingly more easy than he expected. If anything, he was completely ready to get screwed over by a generic MMORPG's looting system and not give him anything on the first go - so Mason was pleasantly surprised that he actually pulled something. If anything, what is surprising him more is how utterly savage all the other players are: rushing for things, stealing material under other people's noses. It's like they try to make it harder on themselves when they can just be patient and wait for the materials to come to them! Seriously, what is with people these days? Why can't they appreciate the finer things in life? Like flowers. Or trees.

Speaking of trees... This is tree is nice. But way too out of the way. Maybe if I had friends. But alas, he does not have friends, nor did he attempt to make friends. Maybe it's his personality. Maybe it's the rags. Maybe he didn't care at all and likes cruising along and going with the flow.

It's probably the rags honestly.

Honestly, it's almost exceptionally funny how well this quest has been turning out so far. It's like this is his lucky day or something - which is great! That means he has to put in less effort into this whole shebang for easy rewards! Hell, nothing can ruin his good mood now. Though, to be fair, not much can ruin his good mood. Maybe bad food. Especially bad food. Especially the ones that make him- He covers his mouth and holds his stomach as if he was suddenly overcome with queasiness.

Alright. No thinking about that. That was a bad time. Thatwasabadtime. Dontthinkaboutit-

Mason proceeds to not think about it all and does his best to wipe his memory clean of the past five seconds. He likes having a stomach. He also likes not feeling sick. But alas, the man in rags cannot get rid of the poisonous thought that took root in his mind. Let's hope he doesn't throw up anytime soon.

Yaaaaaaawn~

Another quest material picked up with extreme ease. The loot really is coming into his hands~! He has no idea why other people are struggling so much - or even rushing. He's going at such a good pace that he's going completely even with those that are running around trying to grab materials. Man, if all quests are like this, he'll definitely be fine, thought that does imply he would've struggled in the first place.

I wonder what other people are thinking about right now~

Mason certainly knows what he's thinking about: simple things like when he should take a break. Or what he should do after this quest once he's done with it. Or about what other people might be doing. Who knows, maybe things are going completely wrong while he's away at the city and he doesn't even know. Though it's really no stress, so he can take all the time he wants~

Drats. Nothing popped up.... Guess it's time to take a break now.

With that in mind, Mason slowly walks over to a nearby tree. He places his back against it and slowly slides down until he hits dirt - though he makes sure that it's all nice and comfy for him. Then... He relaxes. All the would be tension in his body just flows out as he closes his eyes, appreciating the feeling of the outdoors while he still can. He would've never done this in real life, but now that he's in a game where it would be more interesting to feel this way... Well, perhaps he'll do it more often.

Though, maybe he should do it with friends. Friends would be nice. Just being all warm and cozy... Yeah... That sounds like the life.

Alright. New plan once the quest is done: find some friends.

In all honesty, there was no plan at all. He just told himself to find friends with nothing in mind to properly doing so. But that's fine. It's alllll fine...

Mason opens his eyes briefly, seeing if anything had popped up while his eyes were closed. With nothing in sight - technically - the messy fellow closes his eyes once more. If there isn't anything easy and close by, what's the point? Fighting with other players over material is just counterproductive and time wasting. He can wait it out. Forever, if he had to. Though that is not preferable, because sitting in the same spot for a few hours gets boring and it starts getting uncomfortable. Though he could just find another spot, but that takes effort.

He'll see. Not like he doesn't have time in this game of death that he's stuck in. Hell, that just means he has all the time in the world for this game considering it's no longer a game and more like life. Except not life. Bah. It's getting confusing and he's starting to confuse himself.

Just be patient...

There we go.

The material just popped up in front of him, and that means it's easy pickings. Wonderful! Didn't even have to move AND he got to remain comfy! If things keep happening like this, maybe it won't be so bad after all. Actually... He did spy an interesting quest that he wanted to pick up after this. If things ARE like this, then maybe that quest isn't so bad after all. Yeah... Yeah. That sounds like a plan. Alright. Change of plans. Find friends later, do that quest first. It's not like he didn't have experience for that in real life. After all, that quest was one of the simpler things people can do, so perhaps this is just destiny telling him to follow along this path?

Or he's just lazy. One of the two. Probably the lazy aspect. Stick to what you know and all that. Well, perhaps he should start planning. Let's see... I'll need that, and that... Oooh, what if they have this? I'll definitely need to find that... Who would I talk to for materials? Hm...

Easy.

Another one swiped up and he didn't even have to move - Well, he has to move now because his quest just got updated!

<<The First Few Lessons Are Free>>

Objective One: Meet Zakariah. Complete!

Objective Two: Fetch (5/5) Quest Materials. Complete!

Objective Three: Return to Zakariah. Incomplete.

Objective Four: ???

Welp. That was honestly obvious in hindsight, but whatever. He can take his time now, especially with all these other randoms still scrambling and fighting to get a bit of loot to get this easy quest over with~ Welp! Mason gets up from his seat at the tree and begin to stretch, his bones popping when he does some particularly big ones - was he sitting that long that it got to that point? That's actually kind of worrisome. Is he getting old? Is that what that is? Or maybe he has some health issues that he could have never foreseen. Bah. When he gets out - or find a doctor in the game, though unlikely - he'll have to talk to them.

Back into the stupid city and its stupid paths.

He takes it back. He takes it all back. He'll curse the developers to the end of his days. He'll curse the developers to the end of their days. Who thought this city design was a good idea? Who thought that making players travel a certain path and blocking certain alleyways for aesthetic was a good idea? He cannot believe that the path backwards was more contrived than the path outwards. Bah. Whatever. He'll just appreciate the walk begrudgingly...

Mason starts to hum to himself. He's honestly kind of bored, and the now quiet yet bustling city didn't quite mix well with his mood. Maybe a little music would fill the stale air and make this walk less painful... What new songs are out there anyways? He honestly hasn't been looking in game, or even before this game. He's just been stuck on a singular playlist and working with that for most of his life- Is that...? It is!

He starts to powerwalk once again, as if he was going to meet an old friend.

It was not an old friend. It was an entirely different park to the one he had marked before.

Mason sure is a strange one, but he is who he is. What is he up to now...? It seems like the messy fellow has started to investigate the trees once more, and it also seems like he's getting more and more disgruntled with each tree he passes by. Bah. All these trees are awful. Too many branches. Too little branches. Couldn't the developer have been more accommodating? Or less random? Or less evil? Why couldn't they have been more simple minded, jeez... Welp. This park is no good at all. It did not have what he wanted and it took time out of his day when it could've been better spent on actually finishing the simple quest he had accepted.

Back to this stupid spiraling path in this stupid city to finish this stupid quest... This was way too much effort for something like this...

Mason finally ends up back at the workshop. Honestly, it didn't look so bad in the front. A nice porch, with nice grand windows to peek at the wares and tools inside... Hell, even the rocking chair that he assumed the old man used looked well made - for something completely digital anyways. Well. Time to get this over with. He pushes through the door and gives everything a good look over. Tools laid about, all the flasks and mixing stations in one corner of the building... Man, how did he not notice all of this earlier? This was so much cooler than he had initially expected.

It's almost like Mason had forgotten how sleepy he was at the beginning of this quest and how zoned out he was. Or the fact that he skipped all the dialogue and got out as fast as he could instead of taking his time inside the building. But that's fine, it's not like it mattered, right?

Right?

"So wait, if you mix this and that, you'll make that?"

"Indeed."

"But you have to be aware of the mixing methods?"

"Indeed."

"So that means I have to shake it this way, or maybe I have to heat it up first and just do a light swirl? Or maybe I have to make sure that I do this in a cool environment so that it can be frozen up and mashed into a liquid?"

"Indeed."

"This is cool. I guess."

"Indeed."

"Do you say anything other than indeed- Right. NPC. Completely forgot. Wonder what it would be like if all the NPCs in this city had better sentience..."

Mason proceeds to ignore the oblivion NPC and starts getting comfortable with the tools that he'll be using for this quest. Seems like all the quest material he acquired was for the thing he would be trying to make right now! Talk about making use of what you've done! First though, he'll have to make sure he gets this right-

Will this blow up on him? Uh oh...

Alright! Potion time! Enough practice, have at thee!

A flask acquired, materials put into things he don't even know the names of... Swirl swirl swirl... And huzzah! He now has a potion in hand! Though he wishes his body kind of stopped being frozen. He had pressed the "easy make" button and it just took control of him as he played through some alchemical mixing animation - honestly kind of freaky. Next time, he's not doing that. Nonetheless, Mason proudly holds up the potion for Zakariah to take, surely it'll be the best he-

image.png.5fcc8bd2416a4ffbd1ce8807452eab6d.png

Oh. Mason just watches Zakariah swirl the potion a bit and tests it, then shakes his head... Even with the easy make button, Mason still failed to make the potion. How was that even possible? Welp. Guess he has to try again. He ignores the NPCs comforting grin and shoulder pat when he passed over new material for the potion - he honestly didn't care. New potion time!

There we go! He had done it in his own way now this time, and it certainly must've showed with how glowing the liquid is - though is it supposed to be glowing that way? Maybe he messed up somewhere...

image.png.751b2d719acd3f190296a45ce7908d62.png

Regardless, it seems that Zakariah approves of the potion and takes it from his hands. "Good, now-" Skip. Skiiiiiiiip. Yadda yadda, exposition, doing things a certain way, making potions, espousing all the benefits of making said potions. Tips and tricks, yadda yadda, it'll probably pop up in his journal later and he can investigate it - though it's not like he's going to making any more potions any time soon. After hitting the skip button quite a few times, he watches his quest journal update again! What is it now?

Great. He has to play delivery boy. How fun- How long is this quest anyways? There's way too much effort to do such a beginner quest! Bah... Let's just get going...

Oh wow. I didn't expect this at all.

He had found another park! But he didn't have to investigate it all because he already saw the perfect tree. Mason walks up to it, testing the structural integrity of the base... Seems solid, angled in a way to provide good support... The branches? He starts climbing, pushing and pulling the branches that dare to grow on this tree. Again. They seem to be solid enough and provide good enough support... Yeah. This tree will do. Alright. Time to bookmark this one.

Mason starts to lean on the tree, perusing through his menu again as he pulls up the map... Let's see... It was up here, so let's swipe there... There it is! Goodbye waypoint! Hello new waypoint! With that done and out of the way, the messy fellow returns on his path towards the quest marker. This will surely be the last thing, right?

And the last thing it was. The blacksmith was relatively easy to find compared to Zakariah's, but it was so much more hot and honestly, the heat was starting to get to him. Package delivered, new quest - he is so doing that later, doing it now feels terrible. Though he does keep in mind the location... He might have to come back here to gear after all... Though maybe some players will show up and provide much better gear than some no name NPC- Are they some no name NPC? How does this lore work? How does the story even work? Maybe he shouldn't have skipped all that dialogue...

Nah. Skipping all that dialogue was so worth it. He got all of this done so fast and he was being particularly slow about it! Though now that his quest is over with... Guess that means he can return back to the tree! Neat!

...

What a long day. He didn't expect this at all honestly. Buuut... Well. It'll probably be fine. Nothing to stress about at all... Mason just slowly climbs up the tree and starts to settle down on one of the branches, making sure that it won't break on him. After a few tests, the hobo just nods his head firmly as if he was sold by the idea... He stretches his legs out with his back against the tree and closes his eyes...

His first day was over. Now it's time for him to rest and get comfy. Trees after all are quite nice places to sleep if you're used to them.

Zzz... Zzz...

Now he just has to hope that no one walks up to the tree and kicks it so that he falls out. That would be terrible. And rude. And incredibly mean. But it'll be whatever. Just have to find a new tree then to snooze on, though they won't be as good as THE tree.
