[F01-SP] <<The First Few Lessons>>

Goku was having a pretty rough morning but he was happy that he had found something productive to do in the mean time. He ended up going to go talk to some dude to go get a quest or something along those lines. “Yeah, quest, whatever. Thanks man,” he said when he spoke with Dorian. He was kind of annoyed that he had to go to some potion maker as well but he went and talked to Zackariah and found out that he needed to get some ingredients for him. He knew that whatever this was probably was just going to have him go kill or gather some stuff and because of that he quickly ended up in the wilds looking around for some materials. He didn’t quite remember what he was after until he looked at his instructions. “oh yeah, potions ingredients that’s right.” Goku rubbed his hands through his hair and kept looking around. “Flowers are probably what I’m after. Herbs would work too I guess.” “Yeah, there it is. A flower.” He plucked it from the ground and put it in his pack.

Goku looked into the sky and almost tripped over a rock as he walked around more or less aimlessly. He almost forgot to look back and he then noticed that he had actually tripped over a small chunk of wood that would probably make for good use in potion making. “Huh, I need to get my head out of the clouds,” he said while shaking his head. He picked it up and looked around but no immediate other ingredients were visible to him. He yawned and wondered how much longer he would be out here. He didn’t think he had it in him to spend all day out here. That being said, he had all day at his disposal. This was all just to earn a bit of spare cash wasn’t it? Or did he care more about learning a bit about the plants around here? “Definitely the former,” he thought.

Goku encountered yet another useful looking material not too long later. There was a vine growing alongside a tree that matched what he was looking for so he cut it down and pocketed it. He liked the way it felt in his hands in the brief time that he did hold it. He smiled and noticed how he was almost done with his short little task. He walked along eagerly to find some more materials. He had yet to fail and he was determined to finish up quickly. He hopped along through the wilds and took many deep breaths. He really enjoyed the feeling he got when he found success. This place was probably the nearest peaceful place that he could find that was away from the town’s usual hubbub. There were still a good number of people to be found in the area but they all minded their own business.

Goku made a lap around a couple of the trees in a wide area and was unable to find anything worth using in a potion. He wished that he could jump atop the trees and maybe get something up there. If only he wasn’t so lazy he might actually try! He passed by what looked like a playground and wondered if he was even anywhere close to where he needed to be. “Have I gotten lost?” he asked himself while checking his map a few times. He’d wandered a little off course but he found the path that he needed to take to get back to the right spot. He felt like he was walking through a lucid dream as he went back to the foresty area, like he was moving through old memories of his past. His mind didn’t rest as he dug deeper into his past as hhard as he could.

Goku’s eyes glazed over when he was busy walking along and didn’t notice any other ingredients for the time being. He was far too focused on his thoughts anyways. He snapped out of his memories and found that he had been walking up against the side of a tree. “Oof, just one of those days I guess,” he thought. “well I might as well make another lap around. I’m sure I missed something or another on my last lap. Or maybe I can go find another area to look in. I’m not too picky. The scenery doesn’t have much variety in this area anyways so whether I look here or there doesn’t matter all that much in the grand scheme of things.” He sighed and felt like he was almost cheating himself out of an adventure by being here. Why here of all places? “in this vast world why do I hang around here so much?”

“Holy Guacamole!” Goku shouted when he turned a corner and spotted a flower blossoming in the middle of a bunch of weeds. “what luck!” he said while scooping it up. That meant he only needed one left. Now that he thought about it, he missed wandering around the forest from time to time. It was a fairly enjoyable hobby of his that he picked up in his childhood. His mind filled with nostalgia and familiar words repeated again and again in his head. These mornings he needed a friend to chat with but there wasn’t much else he could do about that now. Nobody took this quest with him so he was kind of on his own. “Okay no more negative thoughts. I have a job to do and do it I shall.” He didn’t think that there was any danger in these wilds but he thought that he might as well be safe rather than sorry.

Goku had some friends in the area but he hadn’t seen nay of them in the recent past so he did not know if they had already left the area and gone on their own adventures. It was pretty common to meet people and then never see them again. For all he knew they’d passed on to the afterlife. There were always pressures for him to go make new friends but it almost made a mess of his days. How was he supposed to relax and go on quests when he had social obligations? “I guess that’s why it’s pretty easy to go solo but it’s not always a good idea, or so I’ve heard.” “Well, anyways, at least I’ve found another herb,” he said with a smile. He kneeled down and grabbed a herb and stuffed it in his pocket. “I guess that means I just need one more.”

Not two seconds after Goku found the last herb he spotted a chunk of mushrooms on the ground that looked like they might be useful as well. “Sweet that means I’m good to go!” he shouted while fist pumping the air. He tapped the curved sword at his hip and thought about whether he was done or not. He jogged on over to the man who’d sent him to gather the materials.

“Yo I’m done, what now?” he asked him.

“Uhm, well you can try making some potions with me. It’s pretty easy, just combine the ingredients.”

“That does sound pretty simple. Do I need to go buy my own things or… can I just use yours?” Goku asked. He didn’t want to do any of this but he didn’t think he had a choice. He clumsily knocked over some supplies and Zack palmed his own face. “just use my stuff!” he said.

Goku smashed some materials together and wished on fate for his potion to come out alright but it didn’t. The potion bubbled and then all the liquid inside evaporated and then the glass bottle shattered. This wasn’t like any other potion that Goku had ever seen before. He guess he failed. “Did I do it right?” Goku asked.

“Nope, not good enough,” the potion maker said to Goku. “Try again, but not too many more failures. There’s only so many reagents to go around. Don’t get discouraged, I only jest. I’m able to give you as many materials as you need if you so desire. So mess up as much as you like.”

Goku looked around and noticed that other people were also trying and failing to make potions. There was little to nothing wrong with taking more than one try but Goku was going to feel bad if he was the last person to finish.

Goku  reached out to the side and grasped hold of the ingredients then started combining them again. He reached over to the flask he needed and shoved everything inside clumsily. He even dropped the flask but it didn’t shatter thank the heavens. He then shook everything up nicely and then placed the flask in front of the potion maker. There was little he could do to make his potion look any good at this point but the potion maker shrugged.

 

“I guess that’s acceptable. Be on your way now, you’ve demonstrated enough competency.” The potion maker said. He winked at Goku and Goku felt uncomfortable.

 

“I guess that’s that,” Goku said. He didn’t think that this was the kind of quest he liked to do. “It all pays the same I guess. Thanks for all your help,” he said to the man without feeling the least bit thankful to him.

Having little else to do except kill time Goku decided to go off to a restaurant and get a drink. There weren’t many drinks that were standard that he enjoyed that even existed in this part of the world but he made do with some run of the mill juice which satiated his stomach to some degree. He sat next to someone who had some kind of cloak on who was keeping to himself and not talking at all. Goku didn’t know whether he should start talking or not. He did need another quest to go on soon so he decided to just throw some bait out there.

 

“So, know of any good quests a guy can go on around here?” he asked.

 

“Nope. Leave me alone can’t you see that I don’t want to talk?” The stranger asked. He let out a low growl and he looked over Goku with an evil look in his eye.

“Geeze I only thought to ask because you looked like you’ve seen some serious crap,” Goku said while leaning back in his chair. “So, any reason you’re so grumpy or do you just spend your whole life not talking to people?” Goku wanted to throw something at the guy to get his attention because he just ignored Goku for a while.

 

“I’m not touching you I’m not touching you,” Goku said as he scooched even closer to the man.

 

“Okay if I tell you about a quest will you go frig off?” The stranger said angrily.

 

“Sure, but only if it won’t get me killed. I need something pretty basic because I’m too lazy to go fight stuff right now.”

 

“Ugh, okay let me think for a minute. It’s been a while since I’ve done anything super easy.” The man put his hands on his face and thought for a good thirty seconds before responding.

“Ah, I know just the thing,” he said which got Goku’s hopes up.

 

“Really? What is it?” Goku asked. He was excited for something to do that wasn’t that hard. Something he could just coast by and complete without having to worry about danger and getting all sweaty.

 

“You know how to fish? There’s a quest to go learn how since I guess the guy wants some help. Why don’t you give that a try?” The stranger said.

 

“Fishing? Ugh, that sounds kind of lame to be honest,” Goku said. “I don’t even like fish! What kind of benefits could that possibly give me?”

 

“Oh it’s not so bad. You can make a pretty profit off of fishing if you’re good at it. Not that dangerous either.”

 

“Not that dangerous, that sounds awfully foreboding,” Goku said with a frown.

 

“Heh, well that’s all you’re getting out of me now go away.”

Goku wasn’t too focused on getting a move on. He had plenty of time to burn and the first was just reading a newsletter that someone had made and left at the counter. He picked it up and read through it. It talked about flags that were used to denominated factions n stuff, none of which he cared about all too much. He saw one flag that looked appealing but it wasn’t like he felt like emblazoning it across his back or something. He heard some people across the restaurant who were talking about the various flags that people had designed. He groaned and put the paper back on the table. Was there nothing else of interest in this place for him to do?  He took another look around and found that nobody looked that interesting. Just regular people sitting around and enjoying their day, not caring that they were slowly dying day by day and wasting their time.

Goku got out of his seat and stretched a bit. He thought a little about the concept of hope. He hoped that he could get through the day without wanting to blow his brains out. Hope was just a concept though. If Goku had to put into words what hope was, he would probably fail miserable. He felt like it was almost a deception to believe that hope could change anything or else his life would be a little more exciting than lazing around and taking the occasional quest. He once thought, a long while ago, that hope was all he needed in order to be great and find a better life. Now he felt much differently. He had accepted the reality of the world around him and knew in his heart that there was nothing more to life except doing the bear minimum and scraping by from time to time.

“Oh boy I’d love to get this pattern on a dress,” Someone said. Their friend responded, “yeah that would be nice, but you know you can’t afford that. And most people wouldn’t spend the time to learn how to do it themselves. You can’t blame yourself though, because you have to understand the basic technique.”

 

Goku rolled his eyes from a distance. He didn’t understand people that wanted to make clothing or armor in general. It was pretty boring stuff. Why not just get whatever you needed from the market place? It wasn’t like money was all that hard to come by. Heck, he got a lot just from helping out that potions guy.

 

“It can’t be that hard,” someone said, “I was a programmer when I was younger and it should be pretty simple to figure out even without that kind of knowledge.”

 

“I’m just trying to put it out there that you can learn if you give it some effort.”

Goku thought about what was really necessary for someone to go and make their own clothing with their own patterns. He was sure the knowledge to do so was already out there for the masses to pick up on but he did not know where exactly to look. Would he have to go look up some books? Or maybe ask around? He guessed he was thinking a little too hard on the subject. He took the thought as a comfort into his own mind.

 

“Oh gods what did I do to get cursed with this bore of a day,” Goku asked while getting up from his seat. That was it, he was done with this restaurant. If he heard another word about fashion he was going to throw up. He wanted to go out and practice some sort of combat if only he would be so lucky as to encounter something worth fighting in these areas. He wandered about outside of the town’s walls and looked for anything that was dangerous looking. There wasn’t much to see though. Just some regular run of the mill animals but they weren’t enemies he could just fight. What kind of monster would he be if he just went around slaughtering bunnies?

A single beam of light illuminated the sky off the coast of the safe haven, a beacon in the night. From that premature dawn, the light beckoned another, and another. Pillars of light erupting from around the world rose to the sky in unison till they reached the peak of their ascent and reaching far into to the heavens. It was a signal, but for what one could only guess. Every village, every house, every corner of the land, would be briefly illuminated by the awing display of light. But only for a moment. After only a few mere seconds of this display, the lights would flicker an die, leaving an ominous feeling in the air. Indeed a pressure seemed to descend upon Goku, a pressure that would the weak minded into a panic without even knowing what was to come. If only they knew that there was so much more going on...

Goku headed on back to his residence so he could get ready for his next quest. Along the way he heard some old retired doctors talking about medicine and advances that they had been working on before they’d taken forced retirements. It was an interesting conversation though Goku did not understand a lick of the jargon. It was befitting that he would be the type to need a doctor’s help whenever he got seriously injured when he was younger. He didn’t know much about healing other people. He knew how to wrap a wound but that was about it, not that he ever needed to do that anymore. So many skills he’d built up over the years just never ended up being useful to him. He did not like the idea of doctoring anyways since he felt like it was playing god. If it was your time to go, it was your time, in his opinion.

Goku yawned as he moseyed on into his resting place and tried to plan out his day for tomorrow. “So I’ll go seek out that fisherman, maybe try fishing, see if I like it… if I don’t then maybe I’ll go try something else. Can’t be too hard right? Plenty of people have learned how to fish over the years so I shouldn’t have anything to worry about. I just don’t want to have to touch those wiggly worms, god I hope I don’t have to do anything like that.” He yawned again and settled into a chair while he looked at a map to see exactly where he was supposed to be headed to. The path to get there was pretty straight forward as well. “I wonder if there is anything I should be worried about… it shouldn’t be dangerous right?” He shook his worries out of his head. These were concerns for tomorrow’s Goku to address!
