[SP-F5] This Endeavor

It seemed as though actually killing bats was just one step forward and two steps back. Every time Shade actually killed one, they would fly into a berserker rage and just attack him with renewed hate, bent on killing him as quick as possible. Shade felt the bats bite and claw into him, and he had become very well adapted to it by this point. He hardly even felt anything from them now.

((OOC: F%$k the dice. Seriously.))

Shade staggered back and felt the wall against him, the bats biting him again and again. He was getting tired of this. Tired of being bitten up by these disgusting creatures. Shade was going to find a way to rip their beating hearts from their chest when the next opportunity struck.

Shade lurched forward and brought his sword up. Finally ready to even the score. He launched a hand out and grabbed a bat, holding it in his hand as he glared at it. He but Demon's Fang up against it's throat, and with a quick cut, it was headless. He tossed it's body aside and let it burst, as he looked at the rest.

Shade was attacked. Not much else to tell. Bats bit him, it hurt, yada yada yada. You know. Unimportant stuff. But hey, if Shade dies, then at least Jace won't go around complaining anymore.

Shade fell to his knees and he breathed heavily, trying to get his breath back to normal. His chest hurt, as though ever breath was a reminder of his infidelity. And these were coming from bats. Shade gritted his teeth, not trying to resist any longer. It was fairly pointless now, these bats just ruining him. He was curious why he couldn't land a hit.

Shade's breathing slowed as the bat's barrage of biting continued. He wondered why he wasn't able to land one simple hit, but the pain kept him from thinking much. The poison in his veins made him feel sickly, and he gagged, doubling over and coming close to throwing up.

Shade threw up slightly, gagging as he looked up. He got his sword ready and slashed a bat, sending it away. Shade panted and threw up again, his throat tasting like vomit as he couldn't stand the venom in his blood stream much longer. He had to finish this fight. Fast.

Shade knew things weren't in his favor. He was only halfway through the bats and his health was less than half. If he didn't do something, he would get overtaken. He wiped some puke away from his lip and he slashed again, striking a bat and sending it into the wall, destroying it instantly.

While Shade may have been able to take two down, the last two worked double-time for their fallen comrades. The flew at Shade, biting his arms and squeaking loudly as their leathery wings flapped about. Shade had become a white pale, and he could hardly stand anymore. Everything was cold, and yet he was still sweating.

Shade slowly raised his sword and swung, hitting one bat just hard enough to kill it. Shade took a few deep breaths and leaned against the wall for support, wiping sweat from his forehead as his stomach burned and froze at the same time. The venom was really starting to get to him.

Shade lurched forward and sent one last good slash, hitting the final bat and killing it at last. "About... Damn... Time..." Shade said, before dropping his sword and falling onto the ground on his side. His head throbbed and his muscles ached. His throat burned with the taste of vomit, and his face felt like flaming ice.

Shade rolled onto his back and he stared at the ceiling. Everything was going wrong. He won, but his pride hurt more than his body. Shade was going to be the strongest player in all of Aincrad. How could this happen? He took a few breaths, closing his eyes and thinking to himself. It was no secret he was highly hated on AIncrad, so most people would rejoice if he died here.

As Shade continued to think, he thought of people who did like him. In short, he didn't think of many people. Just one. Shade grumbled and opened his eyes, standing up slowly and using his sword to balance himself out. "Damn it... Even she's not around she's making me do things..." He mumbled, getting back on his feet. And suddenly, he didn't feel so sick anymore.

Shade took a few more steps, now coming to another room. It was small, ill-lit, and looked worn to hell. Shade blinked and squinted to see. His ears then perked up at what sounded like running water. He felt the walls, running his fingers against them and feeling every crevice, and he eventually felt something wet. Like running water was coming out. Shade got his hand wet and licked the tip of his index finger. Water. He washed his face and drank up, getting the sick feeling out of his throat with the clean drink.

Shade sat down on what felt like a bench, and he just took deep breathes to gain his bearings. Hopefully, this next phantom was as easy as the last one. But if not... Well... Shade always did like a good challenge. He laid back on the bench and stared at the wall, picking up a rock and chucking it. The rock bounced off the wall, then the floor, and back into Shade's hand.

Shade sighed and kept tossing the rock, and catching it whenever it rebounded back. "What exactly am I here for..?" He said. Not referring to this hidden temple, but to Sword Art Online as a whole. "If I do become the strongest... Then what after that? Do I just simply keep doing what I have been?" Shade, now genuinely what being a Maverick meant, figured he could probably talk to Shizuki the next time he saw her. Though, she was never good with complex topics like this with Shade.

Shade caught the rock one last time and then set it net to him on the bench. He growled and clenched his jaw. Thinking like this was for the weak, and he was strong. He wasn't going to let petty things like doubt cloud his judgement. He stood up and looked at the way he came in. There must be a way out, too. Shade began feeling the walls again. Even though his eyes had adjusted slightly, it was still tough to see nooks and crannies.

Shade kept feeling, but all that was noticeable on the wall wa that same crevice. The one spurting water. Shade felt the whole wall again, and again, getting tired of the sound of water trickling, and feeling the same spot over and over. He grabbed his sword and shoved it into the crack, clogging it. Shade sighed with relief and leaned against the wall. Until he felt a rumble.

Shade took a few steps back and looked at the wall, which now made a low groaning noise. With a sudden burst, the whole wall gave in and water roared everywhere. Shade gasped to hold his breath, and he then felt something sharp go through his chest and out the other end of his body, now stuck in him. He felt large stones pelt him and he desperately swam, trying to get above the water.

The water kept flowing until eventually, the water level settled, leaving Shade on his side, the object still lodged in his chest. Shade coughed up water, and then stood slowly, feeling had been harpooned through him. It was his own sword. Shade made a low mumble as he slowly pulled it out of his torso, the pain was like none other, but yanked it out quickly, clutching his chest as <> eventually sealed it up.
