Sakura 0 Posted 6 hours ago #1 Share Posted 6 hours ago (edited) Deserts had always appealed to Aoi, in an odd way. She’d found fascination with their entire existence, the way that a barren, dry environment could continue to maintain and provide for life somehow causing an impression upon her. Now that she was in one, however, she found herself reconsidering the interest. Sand blew by her face, leaving her wondering why she had come here in the first place – and more important, why it got everywhere. There’s really no safe haven from it here. It gets everywhere, and you can’t avoid it. Definitely not an ideal, relaxing place…and the heat. This is no beach. It’s no wonder people die here… She’d made her way beyond the walls of the bazaar and surrounding town in the hopes of finding something quieter, knowing that she could resupply her stocks at the same time. A bonus, if she were being entirely honest with herself. The recent rush that she’d made towards propelling herself into the frontlines, and the more advanced areas of Aincrad, had left her feeling disconnected in a way – even Kaie’s continuous assistance in the shop had only buffered it slightly. Though without that little bot, I think I’d have been overwhelmed by the work and orders quite some time ago. Kaie’s really been…more help than I can even suggest. Aoi considered what she could do for Kaie in repayment, knowing almost immediately that the little bot wanted nothing more than to simply help. Kaie would probably be happy if I gave more work, honestly. That little bot seems to love to assist, in any way it can. Though I do need to keep it away from the kitchenette… She remembered with a grimace when the bot had attempted to make Aoi lunch while she had worked on a difficult piece of armour, the smoke from the resulting mess of a meal causing the store to require all doors left open for hours afterwards, and a number of possible patrons driven away by the mere smell that rolled out onto the street beyond. She knew that Kaie had meant well, and she had spent hours afterwards attempting to cheer up the little bot when it seemed entirely disappointed by its attempt. Sakura 0 Posted 6 hours ago Author #2 Share Posted 6 hours ago (edited) Whatever thoughts Aoi may have had about cheering up and thanking Kaie were driven away as the howls ripped across the otherwise open desert area, quickly turning into a collection of yips that sent an odd chill down her spine. Aoi shifted her footing, turning in an attempt to locate the position that the sounds had come from, knowing that the danger would appear from the sands without warning if she wasn’t careful. The crossbow on her wrist was already loaded and ready to go – modified recently with a pull-string that allowed her to fire it single handedly, a small addition that she had made to it herself. Over there? She turned and faced the sudden shifting sand, noticing as it lifted itself from the place it had hidden within until just that moment. The creature was large, slightly bigger than the wolves that Aoi was used to facing on the first floor – and it was coloured to blend in almost perfectly with the sands around it, an off beige and brown colouring that flowed across every part of its form in an almost camouflage like covering. Brown eyes, filled with an animalistic nature, stared out at her from beneath the otherwise shifting furs, and she could see the sharp teeth hidden beneath curling lips. Not ready to be outdone, Aoi took a single look around, confirming that another was coming from her left side, before making her move. She rushed towards the creature, bolt loaded and her hand coming up as she closed the distance and aimed for the thing’s side. She knew that the element of surprise would give her the benefit here, and rushed to close the distance before it could do anything more than growl at her and brace itself. Sakura 0 Posted 6 hours ago Author #3 Share Posted 6 hours ago (edited) The crossbow bolt slammed into the side of the hyena, causing the creature to scream slightly and lash out sideways towards Aoi’s form, catching her and throwing her against a nearby rock formation. For a split second she felt the pain rip through her body, before she remembered the lack of pain filters within the game itself. Struggling to her feet, her mind still reeling from the believed pain more so than any actual physical impact, Aoi reloaded the hand crossbow on her wrist and brought it up to fire once more. It was only during this movement that she realised the second hyena had closed it, the jaws opening as it rushed towards her. Almost reactively she fired the crossbow, watching as the bolt slammed into the hyena and tore through it, halting and changing its forward charge into a sideways drift as it struggled to remain on its feet, all while peeling away from her. The damage she had inflicted was minimal at best, and yet Aoi could see as the creatures shuffled to the side, suddenly wary of her and the weapon upon her wrist. She wasn’t about to give them the advantage of regrouping, and quickly reloaded the weapon before rushing forwards, intent to use her own agility and capabilities to overcome the pair of them as quickly as she could. Sakura 0 Posted 3 hours ago Author #4 Share Posted 3 hours ago (edited) Her sudden charge seemed to take the hyenas by surprise, allowing Aoi to slam her right hand into the side of the more injured of the two and release another bolt into it. The creature yelped and retreated slightly, making its way away from her as it limped back in feigned pain. Whether it was truly in pain or not, Aoi couldn’t say – and in the moment, wouldn’t have cared. She’d already taken a brutal beating from the creature, and she wasn’t ready to give either of them pity at this point in time. Taking a deep breath, she leapt backwards, landing on her feet a few steps away and retreating further in order to give herself some time and space to react to any counter attack that might come from the pair. Instead, the creatures circled slightly away, moving alongside her path in what was clearly meant to be a feinted opening to draw her back in. Calmly, using the time she had, Aoi instead reloaded the crossbow and moved in tandem with them, creating a widening circle that gave her more and more distance – which meant an advantage for her ranged weaponry, over their need to get in close. They’re going to charge soon. How she knew, she couldn’t quite say, but as the hyenas leapt forward, Aoi moved backwards to put more distance and attempt to give herself time to aim. The crossbow in her hand came up, and she aligned the thumb of her hand towards her target, attempting to use it as a pseudo sight for her weapon. Seconds flashed by, and Aoi flicked her wrist to trigger the firing mechanism only once she was confident in her shot. Sakura 0 Posted 3 hours ago Author #5 Share Posted 3 hours ago (edited) The spring within the crossbow snapped forward, launching the bolt into the air and sending it flying towards the pair of hyenas. Aoi watched in slow motion as it soared, hoping that it would meet its mark and bring her to a moment of safety, only to see as it slowly drifted lower and slower. Mere breaths from the hyena she’d been aiming at, it landed in the ground and imbedded itself. As if emblazoned by the failed shot, the hyena rushed forward with a burst of energy and slammed into Aoi’s form, once again sending her tumbling into the dirt and knocking the wind from her. She coughed slightly, pushing herself up just in time to see the second creature leap into the air. Without a thought, she dropped herself back to the ground and rolled slightly, watching the form of the hyena pass overhead and beyond her, to land steps away and carried onward thanks to the momentum it had gained in its charge. She was quick to her feet, reloading and retreating in a slowly developing pattern. She fumbled the bolt into place, the smoothness of the motion lost ever so slightly as she saw the dip in her health bar once more. She wasn’t at a point where she would need to escape immediately, but the continued damage she was taking was putting a nerve on her desire to fight, causing her to question her capabilities and choice in the hunting mission she’d taken for herself. A quick bite of her lip, and Aoi brought the weapon back up into a ready position. Already the hyena’s were circling back towards her, and she knew that she would only have a split second to line up her shot and take it. Move in, get close. You can’t miss if it’s point blank. The thought surprised her, and yet she found herself moving before she could think of the consequences of such an action, her feet carrying her closer to her target even as she brought her arm back and up in preparation. Sakura 0 Posted 3 hours ago Author #6 Share Posted 3 hours ago (edited) The bolt snapped out of the crossbow as she impacted with the creature, using the force of her hand to push it away even as she shot directly into its underside. She’d slid slightly to the side at the last second, and with her momentum and strength she managed to force the hyena into its companion, stopping any chance that it could lash out back towards her – a lucky coincidence that she hadn’t considered when making the movement. The moment she was certain the bolt was clear and she could do so, Aoi picked up her pace and moved onwards and beyond the hyena’s reach, spinning as she went and circling away from the pair of them as they untangled themselves. She thumbed another bolt into the piece on her wrist, deciding that she would need to configure a better loading mechanism on her newer design – when she got around to that. That one’s almost dead…if I can line it up right maybe I can hit both of them? She knew that it would be a much less powerful attack, but considering her situation and chances, she figured it was well worth the risk. Sliding to a sudden stop, she changed direction and rushed towards the pair, hoping they would remain side by side as she closed in with the intent of firing through the first of them. Sakura 0 Posted 3 hours ago Author #7 Share Posted 3 hours ago (edited) One of the hyena’s exploded in a collection of shards as Aoi slammed the bolt into it. The projectile, however, fell to the ground as its momentum came to a dead stop halfway through the hyena’s previous form, and Aoi found herself face to face with the second creature. Before she could react, the hyena’s jaw had clasped onto her arm, shaking her harshly to the side and tearing something within it. She screamed in fear and psycho-derived pain, before being tossed aside by the creature and rolling away. Slowly standing, or at least slowly for how she felt, Aoi moved through the motion of reloading the crossbow through sheer muscle memory alone. Her mind reeled, snapping back into place only once the motion had been completed and she realised she was still in a fight for her life. Planting her feet, Aoi took stock of the situation. The hyena had circled slightly, apparently uncertain now that its companion was gone. Alone, it looked more fearful than it had when outnumbering her, and Aoi wondered if she had scared the pair into attacking her. That doesn’t matter. It’s you or it, and you’re not going to die here. I don’t want to die here. I won’t die here. Shifting her weight slightly, she brought the crossbow up to position, steadying her hand and taking a deep breath before snapping her hand to activate the firing mechanism within the weapon. Sakura 0 Posted 3 hours ago Author #8 Share Posted 3 hours ago (edited) The hyena moved suddenly, charging towards her with an intent in its eye that confirmed for Aoi that it had made up its mind – scared or not, it would remain to see her to the end of this conflict, given the chance. Aoi stood her ground, waiting at the creature came closer and closer, her hands beginning to shake from the fear coursing through her, and the tension that she was keeping on her muscles. Only once the creature was several steps away did she suddenly release the shot, the snapping of her hand the only motion she’d made following the loading of the bolt. The bolt left the weapon, slamming into the hyena’s face and tearing through the side of its eye socket, causing it to lean to the side and careen to the ground in a sudden pile of dust. Aoi rushed to the side, loading the weapon as she went and considering her options. She was quickly running out of energy, but there was little she could do about that right now. Her health had taken a hit as well, as she’d suffered impact after impact from the thing. I just need a few more moments to survive this…just a few more, and I’ll be fine. Maybe I should take a potion to ensure… She leapt around a nearby boulder, reaching down and grabbing the potion that had been tucked away into a thigh holster in preparation for just this moment. Popping the cap off it, she downed the item without a second though, deciding that it was more important to stay alive than it was to bringing down the hyena. Sakura 0 Posted 3 hours ago Author #9 Share Posted 3 hours ago (edited) Hiding behind her rock, Sakura focused on recovery her energy and health. She could see the hyena coming towards her, its head in the air as it sniffed out the path that she had left behind. She knew that it wasn’t deterred – not yet, at least – and that it would likely find her within only a few seconds. That means I only have a short time. Let’s make the most of this, then. Focus on getting my health back up, and deal with it after that. One more potion should put me in more than a safe enough position, yeah? She pulled another of the potions from her thigh holster, popping it open and downing the item even as she moved around the rock further, keeping it between the hyena and herself as it searched for her. It was a temporary solution, she knew that, but she would take anything she could have in the moment. If it keeps me alive, it doesn’t matter what I do. So long as I can walk away from this, I win. She shifted again as the hyena turned towards her, as if hearing her thoughts – though she knew it was more likely that it simply noticed her presence in the moment, pure coincidence. Sakura 0 Posted 3 hours ago Author #10 Share Posted 3 hours ago (edited) Her health was as close to fully recovered as Aoi felt focusing upon it. She’d already consumed two of the health potions she’d begun the game with, which was more than she had expected to use on this excursion – not that she was complaining, if it kept her alive. The potions were there to use, and one thing she knew was that in this world standard gaming practices of saving your items wouldn’t benefit anyone, not when even the most basic of creatures could end your entire adventure before it truly began. Flipping her right wrist, she reloaded the crossbow in preparation for charging out towards the creature. She was hoping to place another stunning shot into its form, to give her an advantage in the fight – if she were so lucky. She wasn’t sure how easily she could manage the attack – but she knew that it was her only chance in the moment, and she wasn’t going to squander it with indecision. Sometimes you have no choice but to take a risk. This is one of those moments, and it will either pay off…or it won’t. But sitting around her wondering and concerning yourself over the consequences won’t help you either. Just go. Sakura 0 Posted 3 hours ago Author #11 Share Posted 3 hours ago (edited) Luck was on her side as Aoi charged out from around the rock cropping that she had used as protection. The hyena had been glancing towards the opposite side of it, clearly aware of her presence somewhere around it, but uncertain which side she would appear from. The momentary surprise was all she needed to close the distance and slam her hand into the side of its head, launching the bolt just as she connected with the form of the creature. The hyena yelled and slammed into the ground, wriggling slightly as it tried to shake off the stun that held it from coming after her. Aoi didn’t wait, retreating to a safe distance before reloading and considering her options. She could see her energy quickly dwindling, but the creature at her feet was almost entirely finished, a single strong strike could bring it to an end if she placed the shot well enough. Taking a breath, she finished reloading the last of the bolts that she had on her vambrace, clicking the ammunition into place and knowing that she had but a single chance to finish this cleanly and easily. Preparing herself, she shifted her weight, raising her hands before her and eyeing the hyena for any openings that would allow her to drive home the finishing move. Sakura 0 Posted 2 hours ago Author #12 Share Posted 2 hours ago Aoi slumped to the ground, her body feeling heavy and her breath coming in gasps. The last of her energy had been burnt on her final attack – an attack that she had luckily connected with the creature, bringing her to safety in the final moment. She couldn’t even bring herself to reload her crossbow, the weapon sitting empty in her hand, and the vambrace’s ammunition banister entirely void of any further bolts. She could hear the wind picking up in the distance, a soft whining sound that swayed passed her and seemed to carry on it the howl of more creatures. Not that Aoi could care in the moment, she was too tired to react, let alone raise herself to fight off any new threats that might arrive. Closing her eyes, she gave into the lull of the wind, hoping that nothing would find her behind the crevice she’d collapsed against. She fought off the sleep, if only barely, but she knew that her current condition was a dangerous one – one which left her vulnerable to anything coming around that would do her harm. Sakura 0 Posted 1 hour ago Author #13 Share Posted 1 hour ago Silence woke Aoi, and she shivered as she realised she’d fallen asleep at some point. Not long, based upon the placement of the light in the sky, but the fact that she had fallen asleep at all left her frustrated and a small measure of fearful. Dangerous…I shouldn’t do that… Groggily she rose from the spot on the ground that she had fallen into in a mere attempt at comfort. Her entire body ached from the uncomfortable, unwelcoming spot that she had collapsed in. Slowly, she worked out the cramps while trying to figure out her current situation. She could see the open desert around her, void of any movement that would signify other players or creatures approaching her area, a fact that she took to mean she’d gotten lucky in her minor lapse. I shouldn’t spend too long out here, though. Kaie’s waiting at home and I need to head back and get some things done. As much as I’ve enjoyed my little time abroad, I can’t waste any more by sleeping it off in a ditch waiting for something to find me. She sighed as she looked down and realised her vambrace and crossbow were still empty. She’d been so tired she hadn’t even had the chance to reload them, or prepare for any more encounters – a fact that was more worrying than it was welcoming in the moment. Sakura 0 Posted 1 hour ago Author #14 Share Posted 1 hour ago Weapon reloaded, and the vambrace’s banister refilled with the extra bolts she always carried on her for instances just like this, Aoi pushed herself up from the small crevice she’d been tucked away in. She had no immediate plans for her next steps, but she knew that she was done sitting around in the desert for the day – it would be best if she made her way back, seeing as she’d come a way’s out into the open sands. What’s the sound? She paused in her movement and listened once more for the sound that she had barely caught as she’d started rising. Her ears strained, she movement slightly in order to glance behind her, noticing for the first time the rattling that had come from deeper within the crevice. Her eyes went wide as she saw the fanged features staring back at her, their points widening apart ever so slightly as it inched closer and closer, as if it had been hoping to take Aoi by surprise. Sakura 0 Posted 1 hour ago Author #15 Share Posted 1 hour ago (edited) Aoi moved in rush of motion as she tried to escape the crevice, ducking as something shot overtop of her and sailed into the distance. She didn’t look back, simply popping out from the area and sliding to the side as she prepared herself to engage with the snake that had hidden itself away from her prying eyes – and which she had unwittingly woken near. She could only be thankful that she hadn’t accidentally fallen asleep and succumbed to its attack while she was unconscious. Refusing to think of that possibility, she instead turned her body and faced the giant snake – easily over a metre long and disgusting to her in appearance. She could see the small rattle moving on the end of its tail, the noise lost to the rush of blood in her ears as the adrenaline soared through her once more. Bringing up the crossbow, she quickly aimed at the thing before making her decision – she would bring it down quickly, and then escape back home as fast as she could.
