Sunny looked around, trying to take everything in properly. He'd never ventured out of the Town of Beginnings before and finally he had made the decision to leave he was going to make the most of it. He thought back to his time so far in Aincrad when he was just going through the motions. When he'd thought that they'd be rescued quickly. But that was then. He'd accepted that this was his new life and that if he was going to make a place in the world he'd have to actually live. And part of that was questing and levelling up.

He'd made his way to the town of Tolbana. A fresh start from the Town of Beginnings to mark the start of his new life.

As he looked around he heard a voice call to him. "You there! Stop, please!" A man was approaching quickly with long, purposeful strides. "Pardon me, but I am in need of some assistance, and you appear quite capable."

Sunny looked at the man and took in his appearance: Grey hair with a monocle gleaming in the light and a smart green cravat pinned at the base of his neck.

"My name is Dorian, and I am the mayor of this town. As part of those mayoral duties, I issued a small loan to a member of the community a few months ago. Well, the time to collect had come around and I-"

Sunny tilted his head to the side but didn't say anything, leaving space for Dorian to finish what he wanted to say. He had a feeling he knew where this would end up, but was interested to see how the flustered mayor would make his request.

"You see, I've forgotten who it was I loaned the money to. Terribly embarrassing, I know, but I am a very busy man, and I cannot keep track of everything that happens. I'm sure you understand." With a wave of his hand, Dorian continued on, "Should you be willing to track down the loan recipient for me, and collect the col, I would be eternally grateful. Just, maybe don't let anyone else know I forgot who the loan went to?"

There it was: his first quest. He smiled at the mayor and nodded. "I'd be more than willing to carry out this task for you. And don't worry, I will be discreet."

Dorian nods. "Excellent, I knew I could count on you! You might start with Zackariah, the alchemist. He's often doing projects for the town, so it may have been him that borrowed the money."

Sunny gave a small chuckle as he acknowledged the information and felt a nostalgic bubble rise in his stomach. A bit of an investigation and a wander around the town. This might be fun after all...

It took a while to find the right shop. There were so many things to see, and Sunny was determined to take it all in. He knew that before long the urge to run around as quickly as possible, ignoring all the little details, would kick in. He was determined not to give in. The fountains and wind towers around the town, especially, caught his eye, and there seemed to be an abundance of housing and places to eat, too. Quite a pleasant place, all things considered.

Once he had located the alchemist's shop he entered and gazed upon shelves and shelves of colourful potions in various vials and jars. “Oh, hello," A man with a long, snow-white beard had glanced up at Sunny. A cup of bubbling purple liquid was giving off a sweet smell from the counter in front of him. "Are you here to order something? I’m sorry, but I am currently swamped with orders, and I’m running out of supplies.”

Sunny opened his mouth to respond but before he could get a word out the man had continued on. “Would you gather a few materials for me? Flowers, herbs, rare woods, whatever you can find outside the city walls. I promise I’ll help you fill your order as soon as you return. In fact, I would be willing to show you how to do it yourself.”

Completely distracted by the opportunity to learn how to craft potions, Sunny nodded eagerly. "Of course. I'd love to learn from you! Leave it to me, I'll be back before you know it."

"Excellent, excellent." The alchemist was already looking back down at the potion in front of him. "Head out into the wilds and gather some materials. Return once you have them and I'll get to work turning them into something useful." He looked up again, another idea forming in his head. "Try some fondue before you go. It will make gathering easier for you."

"Certainly. Anything you can do to help will be welcome." Sunny followed the man to the back of the shop and consumed a portion of the fondue. A quick flash of light around his body signalled the buff taking effect. "Thank you. I shan't be long."

Sunny made his way back through town and out towards the wilds of Floor One, a bubble of excitement starting to build within him.

Sunny started walking, looking to either side of the main path. The plains covered most Floor One, and he felt quite safe making his way around, searching for materials that would help him complete his quest.

He saw some bushes close by and moved towards them. As he approached the closest bush, he looked out over the plains and saw a group of boars walking in a group. He stopped a moment to take in the sight. "Not yet. I don't even have a weapon." He muttered to himself. And he had to be careful. Even low level mobs could do serious damage to the overconfident. The safety that he'd been feeling moments before receded a little. "Let's get on with this."

Kneeling down and reaching into the bush he grabbed onto what he hoped would be his first material. The pop-up shattered any illusion that this was a free quest: Gather attempt: FAIL.

"Oh dear..."

"OK. So bushes didn't work." He stood for a moment and looked at what he thought should have been a full bush. Shaking his head he looked around for a different target. There weren't many trees in the area he was in but maybe he could find some wood at the base of one of the few that were.

Moving across the grass, he chose to focus on the good things instead. He was finally doing something, and things would only get better. The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step after all. And if that first step is actually a stumble... Well, it's just the first learning experience.

There. The tree in front of him did have some wood around it. Maybe this would be enough and get him back on track.

He closed his eyes for a moment before taking a breath and reaching down.

Gather attempt: FAIL.

"Are you kidding? What am I missing here?"

Sunny pressed his lips together and took a deep inhale of air through his nose. Blowing it out in a long, steady breath he centred himself.

"It's fine. This is fine. You have one more go and then you can crack on with the rest of the quest." The thought suddenly occurred that he hadn't even asked about the loaned Col. Distracted by another quest. Or maybe that was the design. Either way, it was time to focus. grab the mats, head back and enquire about the loan.

As he visualised his tasks he noticed a patch of long grass nearby.

"Can't have any worse luck can I?" He said to himself as he walked over.

Kneeling down for the third time he put his hand into the grass and waited for the notification.

Gather attempt: Success.

The ding of the material hitting his inventory was the sweetest sound he'd heard in a long time and as he stood up he was beaming.

The journey back to Zackariah's shop passed without incident and as Sunny closed the door after entering he heard the familiar voice greet him.

"Ah, so you're back. How did it go? Were you successful?"

Selecting his inventory and then the quest item, a plant stem with bright green leaves appeared in front of Sunny and he grabbed it from mid-air before placing it on the counter in front of the Alchemist. "It took longer than I would have liked, but I found this. I hope it will suffice?"

Zackariah picked up the herb and inspected it before nodding. "Yes, this will do nicely." Reaching below the counter he pulled out a pestle and mortar before starting to grind the leaves down to a paste. As he worked, he looked over the top of his glasses at Sunny. "Now, was there anything else I could assist with?"

"Actually, the reason for visiting in the first place was a request I had from Mayor Dorian.." Sunny explained the conversation he'd had, trying his best not to paint the mayor in a bad light, "...And so he'd mentioned some previous recipients of loans and I figured that the best way to resolve the small mix up was to come visit myself."

Zackariah chuckled as he continued to work, now pouring the paste into a flask with some liquid and starting to swirl it. "Leave it to Dorian to forget something so important. No, I'm afraid it wasn't me that borrowed the col. You might try Lyle, the blacksmith. I've seen him talking with the mayor frequently the past month or so, and he's just up the road. I wish you luck!" He poured the liquid from the flask into a vial and stoppered it before handing it to Sunny.

With a nod, Sunny turned and left the shop, making his way up the road towards the smithy.

Walking along the road, Sunny let his eyes wander across all the shops and stores, searching for the blacksmith. He hadn't gone far at all when he saw the tell-tale sign, literally, of a hammer and anvil outside of a shop. Smoke was rising from an attached chimney, another sign that he had found what he was looking for.

As he entered the shop his eyes took a moment to adjust. There was light flickering from a forge, accompanied by sparks flying from a hammer striking metal. A clang would ring out with each strike and Sunny could now see a man with a leather apron turning the weapon he was working on between each strike. Sunny waited for him to pause, the metal having cooled against the anvil, before making a coughing noise to draw the man's attention.

"Good day, I'm here..."

"I'm busy." The man glared at Sunny before taking the sword back to the forge and putting into the heat of the fire. He didn't turn back around but instead grabbed a mug of water and took a swig before turning his attention back to the fire.

"I can see that, but I come on behalf of..." again, he was interrupted as the man waved a hand in his direction.

"I don't do anything without payment. Go deal with a few of those pesky boarlets for me, and bring them back whole or else just their tusks. I don’t care which.  They're pretty weak, so even you shouldn't have any trouble.  Do that, then I'll hear you out."

A quest box appeared before Sunny and as he pressed accept the man spoke again. "Weapon rack is there." another wave of the hand indicating a selection of weapons, "Or if that's not your style, you can use these on them instead. Like I said, I don't mind how you deal with them, that's your business."

A bag of Tranquiliser Truffles landed in Sunny's inventory as he approached the weapon rack, picking up a straight sword that looked about right.

"That's a loan, until you finish the job. Nothing comes for free, see?"

"Err... Sure..." Sunny realised that of course all of the NPC's weren't going to be cheerful and nice. They all had their own personalities and quirks and clearly, with his gruff demeanour, the blacksmith was the tough, no-nonsense type.

Equipping the sword, he turned and left without another word.

Sunny returned to the same area he had carried out his gathering. The plains of the first floor were vast, and Sunny had already seen groups of boar wandering around earlier. "May as well start where I know they were." he thought to himself.

His hand rested on the sword hilt as he walked, looking for the boarlets that would provide the tusks required by Lyle. Sunny snorted at the thought of the blacksmith. "Maybe he'll let me get a word in after I bring him the tusks and I'll be able to move on with the quest."

It didn't take long for Sunny to locate a group of boarlets and as he drew the loaned sword he felt his heart beat faster and his legs shake a little. It wasn't that he was worried about losing, exactly... But this was going to be his first fight... And what if he pulled too many or started taking too much damage...

"Pull yourself together."

He drew the sword, glanced at the health bar in the corner of his vision to make sure it was fully filled and charged into the closest boarlet.

As he ran forward Sunny let out a howl as he raised the sword.

"Raaaahhh!"

It wasn't the most dignified noise he had ever made but in the moment it felt appropriate.

As he neared the boarlet it turned towards him. The eyes gleamed a bright red, easily visible against the short, black hair, and the boarlet let out its own squeal as it charged at Sunny from the grass it had been searching for grubs in.

As his sword swung down the boarlet jumped into Sunny's midriff. A long red line appeared in the side of the boar, indicating a successful hit, and the health bar above its head reduced from a long green to a short red bar.

Despite taking the full weight of the boarlet's charge, Sunny saw his own health bar decrease by only a little. The armour he had selected, against his brother's advice, was doing its job.

The boarlet landed in front of Sunny, ready for its next attack.

Feeling emboldened, having nearly defeated the boarlet in one strike, Sunny smirked at the beast in front of him.

"Sorry, but today's not your day!" He pulled back his right arm, the sword glinting in the sun, and used his left arm, which was equipped with a cosmetic shield, as a counterweight. The blade slashed down, a smaller red visual appearing this time as the rest of the health bar was depleted. The boarlet exploded into colourful pixels, leaving behind a tusk on the grass.

"Heh. I didn't even take damage that time." Sunny bent down to pick up the tusk and transferred it to his inventory. "One down. And the first of many mobs taken out."

He stood a moment, determined to mark the occasion in his mind. This was it. Beating these mobs, completing these quests. This was what he was here for. Yes it was only a boarlet. Yes he'd also taken some damage. But he'd done it.

He let another moment pass before turning to the next mob. Just like his now vanquished foe, this one was also rooting for grubs at the base of a bush.

"Time to go...Raaaaahhhhh!"

Sunny ran at the boarlet in the same manner as his last fight, bringing the sword down just as before. He watched the blade fall but didn't feel the resistance. And the red line wasn't there. The health bar above the boarlet hadn't changed either. The information processed inside Sunny's mind as he felt the forehead of the creature ram into him.

"Oof." Again the armour did its job and his health only reduced by a point. But the wind was knocked firmly out of his sails. This was the weakest mob there was and he thought that he had the advantage. That was a sobering thought.

As he collected his thoughts he saw the air around his body light up and the buff icon for Heavy Momentum appear. It wouldn't help him hit the boarlet but when he next did it would do extra damage and that was positive.

"OK, I've got this, I can do this." He readied himself for his next attack.

Keeping his feet planted firmly with his knees slightly bent, Sunny again swung his sword. This time he did strike cleanly and as the health bar changed from green to yellow to orange, Sunny smiled in satisfaction. The buff icon for Heavy Momentum blinked away but Sunny could tell that it had done its job.

The boarlet reared up before bringing its head down and driving its tusks into Sunny. Yet again, his armour reduced the damage and Sunny breathed a sigh of relief.

He decided that he wasn't in any real danger. Maybe he would have been, if he'd taken different skills when he made his character, but at this rate he'd have plenty of time to grind down the boarlets and complete the quest before he was down to even half health.

With his new found confidence he was able to start picking up the nuances of battle. He had noticed his very first attack, which had nearly taken out the first boarlet, left a brighter damage line and the sound of the sword slicing through the digital beast was slightly louder. Similarly, the attack he had just taken from this boarlet also had shown signs of being a stronger hit. His armour had protected him, but he definitely noticed the difference.

"Alright, I'm starting to understand combat. Time to take you out."

With his eyes narrowed at the creature in front of him, Sunny concentrated on his swing. He wanted to make sure it was strong enough to take out the beast, but he also needed to ensure he was hitting it. Swinging wildly was bound to result in a miss.

He led with his shield arm, taking aim at the boarlet in front of him before bringing his sword around and letting it slice through. The red line followed and he again felt the sense of accomplishment as the health bar depleted and the pixels exploded in front of him.

"Two down, one to go." The tusk registered in his inventory. Sunny was about to close it when he remembered the Tranquilizer Truffles that Lyle had given him. "Let's try this, then." he said to himself as he scanned the area around for the last boarlet he would need.

There was one nearby. As he walked towards it he sheathed his sword and took out a truffle from the small bag that Lyle had provided.

He gave it a small toss in the air and watched it fall back into his hand, trying to judge how far he could throw it. As he neared what he hoped would be the final boarlet he took aim and threw.

The truffle soared through the air, arcing towards its target and landed directly in front of the boarlet. "Yes." Sunny clenched his fist at the sight of the successful throw.

The boarlet took a second to react to the truffle, sniffing at the ground to the left and right before homing in on the tasty treat. Sunny watched in anticipation as the truffle was quickly eaten.

"That's it. A tasty treat, now time for a nap." He watched as the boarlet finished eating and looked at him. A squeal filled the air as Sunny started to feel for his weapon. The boarlet took a step towards him and as it was about to move further a purple hue engulfed it and a sleep status box appeared next to the health bar.

"Phew." For a moment Sunny had thought that it hadn't worked. He picked up the boarlet and saw the satisfying notification: Boarlet Tusks 3/3.

He had completed the second portion of this quest chain and was feeling good.

"Let's get you back to Lyle before you wake up."

Sunny walked briskly back to Tolbana. He was sure that the boarlet wouldn't wake up now. It was showing as a quest item in his inventory so the combat sleep rules probably didn't apply. Still, he didn't fancy being ambushed by the beast.

As he made his way through the streets he marvelled at how alive it felt. Each NPC with their own personality it seemed. Whoever had put this game together had really given it their all. He would smile at those that he passed and exchange small pleasantries. It was probably unnecessary, but he felt like it matched the effort of the creators of this place to treat it as a living, breathing world.

As he entered the forge for the second time he noted that there was no clanging and that it felt slightly cooler. The fire was still burning in the forge, but the door was closed, keeping the intense heat that Sunny had been met with earlier inside. He spied Lyle in the back of the shop organising some inventory.

He walked in, stopping to bring up his inventory and selected both the sleeping boarlet and the two sets of tusks he had collected. They appeared in front of him and he put them on the counter.

The blacksmith looked up and grunted before walking over and inspecting the loot. "I use these on hilts," he explained as he placed the tusks under the counter. "And this one'll do the same, as well as providing some dinner."

Sunny grimaced a little at the blunt explanation.

"Now, now. I know what you're thinking. But these are wild beasts, as you'll no doubt have found. Smarter 'n you have tried taming these as pets and found out the hard way that it doesn't work. They're good for their parts, or they're good for staying away from, and that's that. You'll do well to remember that."

Sunny nodded and accepted the advice, as unpalatable as it seemed in the moment with the boarlet on the counter in between them.

"I'll try to remember it. Anyway, now that this task has been completed, I wanted to ask you about a loan that you may have taken out from Mayor Dorian."

The blacksmith raised a hand to stop Sunny before he could go on. "I'll have you know that I don't take loans from anyone, especially men the likes of Dorian White. You might try old Pete Larkin. He spends all his time fishing for river monsters or some such nonsense." With a scoff, he added, "Without a real job, the man could probably use the charity. Now, if that was all, I have work to get back to?" The man didn't wait for a reply before turning back to his work.

As Sunny turned away a voice followed him. "And make sure you put that sword back where you found it!"

"I must be getting close." Sunny thought about the errands he's been on so far and how he'd already learnt so much about how this world worked. There was undoubtedly lots more to pick up. And he'd probably have to learn more intricate manoeuvres than just swinging at single mobs, but the thought that he'd soon be completing his first quest, at least he hoped he would, was an exciting thought.

The docks weren't too hard to find and Sunny made his was to yet another bearded man tying off his small boat ready to unload an assortment of traps recently retrieved from the bottom of the lake.

"G'day, are you Pete Larkin?"

"Aye, that's me. What can I do you for, adventurer?" Based on looks, Sunny had been wondering if he were related to the blacksmith. If he were, Sunny could tell just from how he answered the first enquiry, that he was different in personality.

He quickly filled the fisherman in on his quest, being given the space to provide the detail this time. Once he had finished listening, the fisherman gave a deep, hearty belly-laugh. "Yer tellin' me Mayor Dorian's taken to sending players to do his dirty work? Fine, fine, he’ll get his money, as soon as yeh help me finish pulling it out of the drink!” The man waved to the boat in front of him. "Not my favourite part of the job, sifting through the catch. So, if yer want to be collectin' the loan yer'll need to search in the boat there for something of value while I gather what I owe. Seem fair enough?"

Sunny nodded and looked into the boat. Netting, traps and all sorts of things were in there. It struck Sunny that Pete must be the kind of fisherman who caught anything and everything. Not entirely sure what exactly he was looking for, he accepted the quest update to search for 'Pete Larkin's Treasure' and jumped into the boat.

Rummaging around at his feet he pulled up a trap and opened it. It was empty and the system goaded him with the failure message.

The second attempt was no better and Sunny shook his head at how bad he was at searching. First the potion ingredients in the plains had given him trouble and now he couldn't find whatever it was in a boat full of whatever.

He refocussed and tried again. This time he pulled out what appeared to be a broke fishing rod.

"This is ridiculous." Sunny looked up and saw the fisherman watching him, laughing. "I hope you're enjoying this?" He called to the man. A doffed cap in response left Sunny shaking his head as he stood up and looked all around him. There. Under the plank that served as a seat was an unmistakable chest.

Sunny leaned over and tugged at it. Searching attempt: Success.

At first the chest wouldn't budge. Sunny shoved some traps aside and as he gave another tug he felt the chest move. As he raised it up and set it down onto the plank he was pleased to hear the notification sound of a successful search. His anger at his previous failed attempts melting away, he let his eyes run over his find. Made of wood, with metal, reinforced corners, it was the quintessential loot box of his youth. He had opened hundreds of items like these in games, but always experienced it through a screen. This looked and felt so real and the excitement at what was to come with the opening was all the more for it.

He looked down to the opening mechanism. A simple latch was present, no padlock in sight and no keyhole either. "That's a relief." He muttered to himself. He had never enjoyed lockpicking as a game mechanic. In his opinion there were 2 ways that games pushed it. First was that you just had to grind away, opening chest after chest as your skill levelled up, usually looting rubbish in the meantime. The second was having it be some kind of mini-game, with tools that inevitably broke just as you thought you were about to open it. "I'm sure I'll find out which version this game uses before long." He thought to himself, as he unclasped the latch and lifted the lid.

As the lid opened he saw the loot list appear in front of him. He looked it up and down and nodded in satisfaction. The weapon, especially, was a good find. Sunny had already started to think about his next steps after this quest and gearing himself properly was high on that list.

He closed the lid, climbed out of the boat and walked over to the waiting Pete Larkin.

As he approached he could see a wide grin covering the face of the fisherman, the crows feet at either eye especially pronounced against the weather beaten skin.

"Not bad. I figured yer were gonna throw a hissy fit, but yer did alrigh' in the end." The man was holding a sealed letter in his hand and waved it a little in front of his face as he continued. "Now, this here will more'n settle my debts with Mayor Dorian." He gave the letter a wipe against a stale barrel of day-old catch before holding it out to Sunny. “That should serve Dorian right, for how he treats his debtors.”

Sunny accepted the slightly damp letter and gave it a quick glance before transferring it to his inventory. The smell of fish would undoubtedly travel with the paper and he had no desire to have it out in the air near him longer than necessary.

"Thanks, Pete. Hopefully I can pass this on before the smell stains my gear."

The man was chuckling again. "We all have to have our fun where we can, otherwise we'll spend our time miserable. Consider that advice an extra bonus added to whatever it was yer found in the chest." It seemed that this NPC was determined to skirt the line between endearing and annoying, and Sunny wasn't quite sure which side of the fence he was currently leaning. If he was to have any contact with the fisherman in the future, at least he now knew what to expect.

"Yes, well. I better be on my way, nice doing business with you, I think." He saw the doff of the cap for a second time as he was turning away and couldn't help but smile a little as he went in search of Mayor Dorian.

It had been an interesting day for Sunny. He knew from previous games he had played that this was just the start. Walking back along the road towards where he hoped Mayor Dorian would be waiting, he realised that it was all upwards from here. The next mobs would no doubt be bigger, hit harder and he'd have to start doing some proper damage to take them out. And he'd only spoke properly to a few NPCs so far... There were loads of players populating this world too that he had, so far, avoided.

It didn't take long to locate Dorian and as he approached the Mayor greeted him warmly before turning to the matter at hand. "Ah, there you are, good to see you. I trust that everything is in order?"

Sunny smiled at the man before selecting the letter from his inventory. As it appeared in front of him he grabbed it from the air, trying not to breath in the stink from where Pete Larkin had wiped it against the previous days catch. He held it out to the man in front of him. "It's not what I was expecting, but Pete Larkin said that this would more than settle the matter." He thought back to his time with the fisherman and allowed his smile to become a grin. "Having met him, admittedly only briefly, I assume that the letter probably isn't going to be straight forward."

Mayor Dorian eyed the letter dubiously before opening it. "Well, yes," he stammered, "I suppose that's a fair trade. Truth be told, I don't quite remember how much we loaned him, anyway." Delicately, with two fingers, Dorian set the parchment aside. "Uh, alright, that's all, then. Thank you for your help. If you ever need anything in this town, do not hesitate to drop my name. I'm sure that's far more valuable than any monetary reward I could offer you, anyway."

Sunny felt a rush of adrenaline course through his body as the system message popped up in front of him: Quest Complete.

"Thank you, Mayor. I appreciate it." As he walked away from the man his mind was whirring. "One down. Where to next, then?"
