[F17-SP-PT] Cooking Spit (Challenge of Olympus)

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Walking through an orchard of trees, bright red fruit hung upon each. There had been no players here, it was one place that every few knew about. Observing each apple with a very studied eye. One perfect one comes into view, she smiles and plucks it from the branch. Rubbing it on her clothing, the shine reflexes down from the sun above. A chime of her HUD gets her attention. Carefully placing the apple in her bag, she takes a peak. The same prompt from alchemy but for cooking. “Amateurs” is all she says, accepting the supposed challenge. She knew that she would wreck their egos again. Picking another apple before a snap of her fingers, a portal would appear and she walks through. It would bring her to the same mountain path as last time, sighing as she was slightly annoyed. When the quest was not active she could take her portal straight up with no issue.

It was a bit faulty on the cardinals part but there was nothing that she could really do at this point. Walking up the curvy path, the satyr guard appears again. When he realized that it was Morrighan he didn’t even bother talking knowing that she would just hush him like she did last time. He followed her in silence, like a lost little puppy with their tail between their legs. That was good, she didn’t have to listen to that annoying deep voice. The pass threatened to collide down on them but she walked a bit fast before anything interrupted her movement. Glancing behind her, she wasn’t sure if that thing acting as a guide would be mandatory for this quest to complete so she waited for him to catch up. Normally she wouldn’t give a damn but she really didn’t want to have to do this all over again and waste more time from her day.

Quest Objective | Meeting a satyr guard, often acting as an escort for the player

Another few pebbles drop to their feet and roll down the hill. Morrighan had forgotten how long this trail was. She would pick up the pace up the incline, hearing the beast behind her thwomp against the ground with every foot fall. She thought that after all these times of walking up this same path, shouldn’t he be a bit skinnier or at the very least faster than this. Eventually they would get to the top, once again the creature was leaning against the wall out of breath. Really wishing that she could skip this step. Really it took the longest out of everything that this quest had to offer. Shaking her head at the creature, she pushes the large metal doors open. This was her fourth time being here and it was already getting old. “Hey losers, let's get on with it.” The NPC’s all stood this time, it looked like they were surprised to see her again.

They were all just staring at her, “What do I have something on my face?” rubbing cheek with a hand. “Uh, no… We uh” Morrighan gives a long exaggerated sigh “OMG just spit it out already, I don’t have all day.” They look at each other in almost a panicked notion. Were they scared of her? Weird, maybe they were finally learning their place in this world. “We want you to cook us something, all of us. A feast at its finest, doesn’t matter what it is you make, as long as we all like it” Hestia blurts out. That wouldn’t really be a problem, everyone liked her cooking but she hasn’t really cooked for anyone in the game yet. Guess this was as good of a time as ever to try out her master cooking skills. “Fine, I’ll be back” saying as she turns and walks out the doors she came in from.

Quest Objective | Speaking with Hestia, god of hearth and home

Walking behind the large white building and up a slope, she knows of at least 6 watering holes in this area. Only one had the right fish that she needed for this meal. Morrighan had collected a few spices and side dish content for this specific occasion. She knew it was coming soon but it also seemed a bit random too. Pulling out her rod, she had gotten one of those too. Coming upon a mostly flat surface, there lays a pond of medium size. This was the only one that she knew provided Rainbow Trout. Thinking it was fitting for the task, she takes out a worm and places it on the hook at the end of her line. Casting it out, watching the fish speed up to get away, they eventually slow their movement and come to a halt. Staring at the bait, stalemate like they really wanted it but knew what would happen if they latched on.

Quest Objective | Initiating a challenge set out by Hestia.

These trout looked pretty big, that meant that she came at the right time. Being a full size meant that she would only need to catch two instead of four to feed the challengers of 10 maybe but whose counting. The fish stared at the bait, Morrighan stared at them waiting for the precise moment that one latched on. A nibble from one, the line shifts. Another small tug, not yet. A sudden snap of their choppers as she starts tugging in the opposite direction that they were pulling. The pond wasn’t that big so it didn’t take long before the large rainbow trout was in her hands. It was slimy, it always was though. She used a pressure point on its neck, it made it to where the creature stopped moving. Taking a plastic bag from her inventory, she sets it in so that it doesn't get dirty. One more and she would be ready for preparation.

Taking another small worm from a tiny jar. Attaching it to the hook at the end she casts it out again. They swim around in a rapid motion before calming down. From the looks of it there was only one more rainbow trout and the other that was eyeing her bait was a bass. This would be a bit tricky, if the fish that was not needed grabbing the worm then it would likely steal it. This would cause her to have to waste another on this project. Setting the pole on the ground, she would hold it with her foot. Her weapon comes out in the form of a spear, she takes aim at the bass at struck hard. The weapon vanishes but it leaves the fish flooding dead upon the top of the water. “Better” she says with a smile as she picks up her fishing pole. Seconds later the rainbow trout bites down.

In mere seconds the fish was in her hands, dead by pressure and set into the bag with the other. All the other ingredients were gathered fresh earlier, she had a feeling that this was going to be happening today. So instead of walking into some magical cave where everything was there, not knowing where they came from or if they were even fresh by game mechanics. She didn’t want to go through the same thing with cooking that she did with alchemy. Planning ahead is what she was going to be doing for now on with these stupid guide line quests. Walking back down toward the big white mansion looking building, she pushed open the large metal doors. Seeing them all stand again, it was a little eerie that she could see all of them in their true form rather than just one and the rest being shadows. For most people the pressure would be on, but Morrighan wasn’t just some person.

Working under pressure didn’t bother her, not that she was doing this right now. It was like trying to watch and train a cat to jump through hoops. The only nervous ones in this room were those fakes watching her every movement. In the back right of the large open room there are bright lights shining down onto this massive kitchen. “That should be everything that you need to make whatever it is you’re making” the glance down at the plastic back before they all come to gather around Morrighan and her works place. Pulling two fingers up and drawing them across the counter top. Flipping her hand to look, there was nothing there. Good, at least it was clean. Looking into the cabinets, this was nowhere near what her kitchen looked like, hers was much better. Eventually finding a cast iron pan, she would be cooking it two different ways today.

Simply put, she wants the trout to have a small crunch to it but at the same time have that soft flaky taste with each flavorful bite. This kitchen may be large but it didn’t have anywhere near what she had in her living place. She would have to make due, Morrighan could be very resourceful if she wanted to be. Finding the dullest knife she could find, she starts to lightly scrape off the scales from each side of the fish. It was being done in the sink because she knew how messy it could get and a clean area would be needed for the next steps. Turning on the water, rinsing off the fish so that it would be clear of scales. Setting the trout on a large sheet of paper that was placed on the cutting board. There were a lot of steps to this process, she would follow every single step to the T so that it turns out the way it's supposed to.

Tossing the dull knife in the sink, she now looks for the sharpest knife. Needing clear slices for this next step. Taking the fish, setting the tip of the knife at its neck, she slices down just enough to open the inside. She knew that if she went too deep that it would destroy any chance of using this trout, so being very careful was the key here. Slicing down about half way, she sets the knife on the counter and clears the inside out. After all this she rinses the fish again so that it is clean. Glancing to the NPC’s, they were all just staring at her with their mouths wide open. It was like they never saw this be done in such depth. That amazed her given that they had probably done hundreds of these challenges and they were acting like it was the first time seeing this.

Who the hell were the passing if that was the case. Shaking her head, she couldn’t focus on that right now. Turning the trout around, taking the sharp knife, she begins to slice the meat from the bone. Flipping the fish she removes the meat from the other side now. Perfect cuts of filets are placed on the counter top. This is when she starts taking out all the spices from her inventory. The screen was not even visible because she was going through it so quickly. Blink it and you would miss it. Taking the cast iron skillet, turning on the oven, she places it on the heat. Pouring some veggie oil in, she lets that sit to gain some heat. Taking a grater, one with very small holes, a garlic would start to scrape against it. Slicing an onion in half, peeling the first few layers off, that would start to scrape against the grater now.

Finding a press in one of the cabinets, she would take the lemon and cut them in half. Putting them in the press so that she could get fresh lemon juice directly from the source. She had gathered quite a few knowing that it would take at least 10 to get a good amount. When that was done she would take the knife again and slice the fish into even chunks. Glancing to the audience, still staring. This would make anyone feel under the weather, a nervous wreck but this was actually kind of amusing. Setting a few of the fish chunks on the hot skillet, she takes a brush and lightly rubs the lemon juice on each piece before sprinkling the other seasoning on them. Grabbing a pair of tongs, she gets to eye level with the food. Waits five minutes and flips them over. She does this for each side, small amounts of flavor on every bare skin.

Setting the cast iron pan in the oven for three minutes, taking it out with a mitt and portioning the fish out to plates that she found sitting in a different pantry. The plates were ugly but it was all she had. She repeats the entire process two more times before all the fish is cooked evenly and set on platters. Quickly grabbing a pot from one of the cabinets, she takes out some carrots. Slicing them fast and evenly, it was almost like she was a pro, hmm wonder why. Putting some water about half full in the pot, she dumps the veggies in and sets it on the heat. A small splash of butter into the mix as she cuts up more carrots, one was not going to be enough. After a large handful of carrots were cut, she started digging into her bag. Pulling out a smaller bag, she sets it on the counter.

Untying the bag, she empties the bag in a strainer. Setting it in the sink, she began to rinse the baby potatoes. After this she dumps the bowl of potatoes into the pot with the carrots. Raising the heat, waiting for it to boil. Sprinkling some onion and garlic bits into the water so that they would sink into the ingredients. After about ten minutes she checks one of each to make sure they were done. With confirmation, she starts putting them onto plates evenly. Pulling some sour cream out with shredded cheese that she made earlier. Putting a portion of cheese and sour cream on the potatoes, she steps back after turning everything off. “Enjoy” she says sarcastically, crossing her arms. They better damn like it, it had taken her longer than it would normally given the huge meal she needed to create. They just stand there whispering, exchanging glances to one another.

“Take a picture, it lasts longer. Dig in before it gets cold. It will taste like crap if it does.” They say nothing, just stare. Was it because she didn’t place forks and knives out? “Oh my lord” saying as she pushes through the crowd and gets into one of the drawers that had utensils in it. Grabbing a hand full, she dumps them onto the counter top. They all started to take a fork and dig into their own dishes. Stepping back once more, before she got run over. They really were just as stupid as they looked. It was like they had a loading circle right above their head trying to interpret what was being done or said to them. Before she knew it all the plates were empty. They all turned slowly toward her, her head turning slightly, pure confusion. “So? Did I pass your stupid challenge?” More whispering between them, Morrighan sighs, waiting for an answer.

Tapping her foot, looking at the clock on the corner of her so to speak screen. It had been ten minutes and Morrighan was growing impatient. It was one thing to be waiting on a player, she knew that they might actually do something useful. Watching time pass for these nerds was much different. They were utterly useless and didn’t do crap. They just make you craft just a little bit better for the other players, she really didn’t have to do this but the game and its specific ways of doing things would hold her back slightly if she didn’t oblige the task. “What is taking so long, you either liked it and I beat the little challenge or you hated it and I have to eventually redo this stupid quest.” Morrighan seemed a bit irritated, but Hestia turns to present the amulet. One by one they all turn to face Morrighan while Hestia speaks.

“It was the most amazing meal that we have ever tasted. People come by and prepare us things with no real skill. We encourage them to try their best but you” turning to lock eyes with a few of the NPC’s behind her “You come in and know exactly what you are doing on everything we’ve tasked so far. We look forward to seeing what else you have to offer.” Morrighan takes the amulet from Hestia’s hands, she almost sounded genuine. Almost like they were trapped in a place that they didn’t belong. Only time would tell if Morrighan’s accusations would be true but something about what that woman said had placed second thoughts in her head. Turning toward the door now with the prize in hand. This was only two of many that she would need to gather. Opening the giant metal door, the creature was no longer there. He must have vanished for the time being.

It would make for an interesting conversation some day, if they were truly people from another world but just trapped. That would make them not fakers at all, just semi important people given a specific task to follow through with. Walking down the mountain side, her HUD chimes to notify her that the quest was completed. Morrighan knew first hand that things were changing around here, hell she was the cause and effect of a good portion of these said things. The NPC’s becoming more real with different monologs were one of those things. Maybe that meant that they were starting to remember who they were in the other life. Wouldn’t that be a sight for sore eyes. She wouldn’t just have warriors, she would have an army. First she will need to get herself back to the way she was before. Morrighan had to help herself before she could help anyone else in this god forsaken game.

Seeing the end of the trail that would lead into a large field, putting two fingers in her mouth as she whistles. Her silver armored horse comes galloping over, doing a crazy round hop circle almost like it was excited to see her. Walking to him, she pets down the side of the neck as it snorts. “Good boy~” saying as she grabs the thin leather robe and flips it over the head of the horse. Grabbing the holding part of the saddle, she flings herself up and lightly kicks both sides of the horse with a clicking sound coming from her mouth to make him start moving. Morrighan would head to that same orchard that she was at before all this. The trees were not just full of apples, there were others around that had peaches, cherries, pears and much more. There were also bushes with berries surrounding the tree line; she was surprised that there was no one else there.
