[PP-F01]Ware do i go? <<Earning a Living: Appraiser>>

Recommended Posts

Fae was on a mission today, she had picked up a cooking profession and even one for foraging, but the job she was looking for today was all together different. Over the course of her explorations she had quite the stockpile of miscellaneous goods, from swords and armor to necklaces and potions, all of which she'd have to take to a professional appraiser in order to actually. Hence why she found herself in front of a small shop cramped in to the small space in between the other two storefronts.

She pushed open the door, and was stunned for a moment, she had never seen such a large assortment of goods, all kinds of things were cramped into tall shelves, every inch of space being used to hold swords, knives, and other weapons. Trinkets and jewelry were hanging in hooks all over the walls and shelves, the entire room was chaos incarnate and Fae couldn't fully believe that the small shop store so much. She weaved her way through the piles and shelves coming to a store front, a counter that only had the barest amount of free space for transactions stood with a door to a small room beyond. Fae was about to speak up when a short bald man walked out from the room and smiled at her "What you looking for today? We have anything your heart could desire." The man's teeth were almost blindingly bright as he smiled unwavering at his new potential customer. "Oh, I was actually here to see if you wouldn't mind helping me learn how to appraise my own gear." The smile almost instantly melted off the man's face as he looked at Fae appraisingly. "I don't ruin business for free, hell i don't do anything for free. You bring me the items and I'll show you what to do, and if you're good enough I'll even pay you for your troubles." Fae frowned back at the man, she had been more than willing to pay the man, but his presumption irked her, but she didn't react more than that. "That's a fine trade, I'll be back soon." She strode out of the shop, only slamming the door slightly harder than necessary. "I was going to organize my storehouse today, but I guess this'll take longer than I though." she grimaced to the air that she was speaking with and made her way to the gate.

It wasn't going to take Fae long at all to find what she was looking for, she needed a handful of items that she could give the bastard and then she'd be able to handle all of this kind of work herself. Her home on the third floor had plenty of unidentified items in her storeroom, but it would honestly take longer for her to go all the way back there than it would be to go out into the fields around the town of beginnings and scrounge for what she needed.

The main ways to get unidentified items was either to kill monsters or to find chests, but there was also a chance to find them in small caches that were similar to chests but much smaller and only really found on the first few floors. Most of the time they were full of nothing but the lowest tier items and wouldn't be worth the time to gather, at least not for someone with anything already. It didn't take Fae long to find a small river with a box somewhat hidden in a small pile of rocks and inside she found a simple sword perfect for what the shop keeper was looking for.

Another half hour of searching led Fae to a second of the caches she was looking for, hidden in the bole of a tree where one might normally find the nest of a bird, or the hidden stash of a squirrel. Inside of the cache was a small potion the length of a finger. Fae pocketed and turned away from the tree.

This was already taking her longer than she had wanted to spend today, she had more important things to be doing than collecting trinkets for a rude old man. "Couldn't just accept my col. No, I have to go out and scrounge for useless trinkets not learning anything." Fae huffed and kicked a rock, she was mad for no real reason, she was just tired of every NPC acting like her time was less valuable than theirs, she had only so far met one that wasn't short or rude with her when she made it clear she wasn't purchasing things from them, and it was beginning to get on her nerves.

Being upset with the shopkeep was pointless and Fae knew it, while most NPCs had some sort of spark that made them more person than program,  some of them on the lower floors were a lot more scripted. The shopkeep was a classic archetype of a money hungry merchant, and he didn't have the ability to be more than he was. The thought sobered Fae quickly, her anger melting in the heat of compassion, these less alive NPCs lived half lives unable to express themselves beyond what little their programming allowed.

Fae's anger fully vanished by the time she found her third and final item for identification, a set of light armor that she would have absolutely no use for. It was still another half hour before she was back into the city and even longer until she was back in front of the unbelievably cramped little shop. She paused in front of the door, the man couldn't help being awful, but that didn't really make it easier to handle him, and Fae wasn't looking forward to it.

Fae quickly opened the door, barely even marveling at the impossible amount of random junk and weapons that were stored in the main room of Drax's shop. It was best to get this over with so Fae walked to the counter in the back before calling out. "Hello, Drax, I've got those items you were asking for. In order to show me how to appraise." Fae only had to stand for a moment longer before the shop keep stepped out from behind the door to the other room. "Ah, very good, follow me, all the real work is done in the back." the gruff attitude seemed to lessen as she followed him through to the back room, and ir was almost as astonishing as walking into the main room. Where the storefront was row upon row of shelves with anything someone could think of, the back was immaculately clean and orderly, in contrast to the front it was shocking. "A clean work area leads to clean work, that's the first lesson. It may seem obvious, but an appraisers work has a surprising amount to do with chemicals and other solvents and the sort. Contamination can make registering the enhancements of a Consumable or piece of equipment off. Now go ahead and put what you found on the table and we can go from there." the warm smile Drax gave was completely unlike what she would have expected from the man, but she did as she was told placing all of the items on a clean metal table.

Drax spent a moment studying the items before picking up the simple sword. "This will be the easiest to test by far, so we'll start here." he walked over to what looked to be a thick wooden log attached to what appeared to be some kind of seismometer. "In general weapons are going to be the easiest to test, followed by armors, then everything else in no particular order. With a weapon," Drax handed the weapon to Fae as he was demonstrating, placing his hand on the log "We can use this device to measure its damage output, with a weapon of this quality we can tell if it's been boosted, and if it has then nothing else has been added to it, it gets more complicated with higher tier or rarity weapons but the process is much the same. Go ahead and give it a nice swing. and so Fae did bringing the sword down on the device with a nice hard hit. She had expected the sword to bite into the log, metal being harder than wood, but instead it rebounded as if the log were resistant. Drax gestured for her to put the sword back on the table as he grabbed the paper from the seismograph and brought it over to her. "If the registered line passes this line here," he gestured to the first of three horizontal lines on the paper "but doesn't go past either of the others, than we know that there is a basic enhancement to damage on the weapon, in the case of this one we know that's all there is because it only has the one enhancement." Fae hadn't been expecting such a thorough explanation, but she appreciated it, she hadn't realized how much could go into appraising. "What about other enhancements? The seismograph obviously won't register those." Drax smiled at her pleased with her engagement in his teachings, before he pulled out a leather bound book and handed it over. "I knew we wouldn't be able to test everything you got here today, so I figured id compile a little something for ya. In there is all the different test and what they mean. And what equipment you'll need to run em. I'll still help you with these last two mind you, a deals a deal after all. But you can use this in your own shop to figure it out. Appraisal is an art and a science combined so it'll take some trial and error. Eventually you might even be able to tell by sight like I can, though you should always run the tests to confirm. A thorough businessman is one who stays in business. Drax laughed softly as Fae tucked the book away before they both turned there attention back to the table.

Drax picked up the potion from the table and frowned. "Potions and foods have always been my least favorite, if you mess up even a little it can ruin the entire item with as fickle as they are. And the amount of work needed for even a single test is more than for most other, though Potions do win out over foods. He walked over to another table, this one completely full of different chemical equipments and vials labeled with different liquids. If she hadn't known any better Fae would have thought that this was an alchemist's lab and not an appraiser's work room. Drax sat in the only chair at the table so Fae just stood next to him as he continued his explanation of what he was doing. "So with potions you can check for the basic enhancements pretty easily, once you start getting into the rarer items and enhancements it gets muddled and more complicated. Luckily for us though, this potion seems to be one of the most basic and simple."

Drax pulled a large flask over to himself along with a lid that had several tubes leading to smaller flasks. He placed the flask on top of a small basin with wood for a fire and lit it before pouring the potion into it and stoppering it with the lid. He turned around in his chair and faced away from the beaker "The idea here is to heat up the potion causing the vapor to rise and flow through this tubes where they will condensate back into the vials. The flask itself isn't enchanted, but the lid is. It will seperate the vapor into its component enhancements, each vial holding a different enhancement. The more liquid in each vial the stronger the enhancement present. The problem with this method however we will get into in just a moment." he turned back towards the beaker and took it off the fire, there was a decent amount of red liquid pooled in one of the vials that she could now see was marked with VIT which she could only assume meant Vitality. "Much like the sword we won't need to do further tests as we can see that this has only Vitality in it, and with this rarity of potion we know it would have to be a moderate enhancement." he spoke while he poured all of the contents back into the original potion vial, both the concentrated vial of vitality and the remaining potion in the beaker before holding it in front of Fae. She immediately saw the problem. "It's nit as full though." the man smiled as he grabbed out several vials of liquid and measured them before pouring them into the vial and giving it a vigorous shake and handing it to Fae "Precisely my dear, there is always something lost when boiling the potion like this, but with the right ingredients you can supplement to make sure it keeps its full effects. I won't go into that now, as it is really a case by case basis, but everything you need for it is in that book." Drax took the potion again from Fae and walked back to the table where they only had one item left to identify.

The last item was just a simple cloth gambison, something that would protect you at least a little bit, but wasn't actually much. Drax picked it up and scowled. "Now this here is probably our hardest of the day. Its armor which would normally be quite easy, if it were made of metal that is. Most of the appraising on this piece has to come from physical testing in the fields, but I think we have something in here that we can make do with. he carried the piece over to a series of clamps that he attached to all sides of the armor. The clamps were attached to a winch that when turned would pull on them and in turn the armor. "This test isn't really surefire, but usually if an armor, with the notable exception of cloth armor which has it's own rules, isn't made out of metal, then it's focus is going to be on mobility. We can use this machine," Drax started winding the crank a few rotations at a time as he spoke "in order to test the relative elasticity of the armor, the more elastic the higher the evasion enhancement. A moderate enhancement like this one can handle 4 rotations without strain." he showed this by attempting a fifth rotation which seemed to start sticking halfway. He took the armor out of the contraption and put it back on the table. "That of course was just a small taste of what an appraiser's job entails, but I think its more than enough to get you started." he rummaged around under the table for a while before pulling out a sack and placing it on the table "Here, it's payment for two of the items you got. Go ahead and take one for yourself, you've given me a good bit of fun, not often I get to talk about my work with a willing and interested party. Don't much mind which one you take, but for now I gotta get back to work. Pleasure appraising with ya." with those words Drax walked back out into the main room, and by the time she gathered her bag of col and the small potion he was already out of the shop on some errand or another. "He didn't even give me enough time to thank him. Whatever I guess." Fae shrugged and hiked up her bag before making her way all the way back to the third floor and through the forest into her shop, she had some work to do.
