[PP-F01]Hook Line And Sinker <<Earning a Living: Fisher>>

Recommended Posts

So far Fae had gotten three separate professions, though to be honest only one of them seemed to really be doing much to help her. She immensely enjoyed the benefits from her cooking and the bakery that she had started, but the forager profession had honestly seemed to hinder her more than it had helped her so far, and she wasn't sure if she was ever really going to focus on it, and the appraiser job was incredibly difficult if you weren't already established. Today though, none of those jobs were of any import as she strode her way across the banks of a large lake to a small homey shack that she knew would be sitting precariously on the docks. Fisher wasn't a job that she had ever intended to add to her repertoire, but she had been told that she would be able to get a Gleaming Scale if she just completed the quest, which was something she was interested in.

This situation was how she found herself standing near the dock as a young blonde man waved her down and smiled with all too perfect and white teeth. "Anthony Gill, at your service" the man gave a mock bow before looking at her with a knowing look, though Fae had no idea what he could possibly think he knew from there five word exchange. "I know, you were expecting an old man with a long beard and a pipe, but this is all you get. Sorry to disappoint." Fae was most definitely not thinking that at all, but she didn't really see any point in saying that to the man so she just continued on with her objective. "Oh, not at all. I was actually here to learn about fishing, and I heard you were the absolute best to learn from." Anthony's grin only grew wider and all the more bright as she spoke. "I am humbled and honored that you would come to me to learn, and since we're friends, I'll let you in on a tiny little secret." he pulled a small tin out of his pocket and handed it to Fae before continuing "This here's a super secret bait, a priest prays over it in a top secret ceremony, and I'm the only one in the world who has it. If you go ahead and use that on your rod, you'll catch yourself a rainbow trout in no time, come back to me with that trout and its gleaming scales and you'll have learned anything I could teach you on your own. Go ahead and feel free to borrow one o' my boats if you feel so inclined, otherwise you might be able to catch one from the shore." Fae smiled back at how easy the exchange had gone "Thank you, I'll be sure to return the bait to you as soon as I'm done." with a nod she moved to the proffered boat and stepped inside. She had never been on her own row boat before, but how hard could it be to control.

It was soon evident to Fae that, like happened almost every time, asking the question of how hard something could possibly be almost always made sure that the task was one of the most difficult possible. In this case, she had absolutely no idea what she was doing, and after having her boat pushed out into the water she didn't even know how to get it to propel forward properly. She attempted to pull both of the oars through the water at the same rate, pretty sure that was what she was supposed to do. As she slowly propelled forward she found that the boat was turning towards the shore to the left, so she eased up on the right oar to try and balance, and in so doing found herself just turning the opposite direction and not moving forward nearly as much. A few minutes of trial and error that made her glad she hadn't brought anyone along with her led to Fae falling into the motions, finally propelling the boat forward without much trouble. Before long Fae found herself in the middle of the lake and, stopping her momentum, she pulled out the fishing rod she had found stored at the bottom of the boat and began to prep.

She didn't exactly know what how a blessing from a priest in some sort of ceremony would make the small tin of bait any more likely to catch a fish, but she took a small pinch and placed it on the hook before casting her rod as far into the lake as she could. She had only ever been fishing once, her and her dad had decided to try it in order to fit that cliche, and on that day neither of them had managed to catch anything at all. Having planned to cook their fish over a fire and eat at the lake they were camping at the pair had decided to rush to town and order Chinese take out. It was one of her absolute favorite memories, from a time before her dad had gotten sick, and from when they had the ability to relax and spend time together. She was shaken out of her revelry as she felt a small jerk on the line, she knew that she shouldn't immediately pull on it as the fish might not have fully grabbed the hook. A tense moment of waiting rewarded Fae as a much stronger force pulled on the line. Fae started pulling on the line, rolling the line with the reel as she fought with the fish. Maybe this would be the rainbow trout and she would already be done for the day. A brief tug of war ensued as she fought the fish before it finally broke the surface and was no longer able to fight back, it wasn't what she was looking for, but it was still something. Fae could only imagine her dad sitting in the boat next to her, his dopey grin beaming at her in pride. It had been a long time since she had seen that, and it sent a wave of longing through her along with the smile the thought brought to her.

Fae was a woman of action for the most part, preferring to be doing something with her hands or feet that just sitting down. Relaxing wasn't something she had ever really done much of, unless she was sleeping of course which was of course her favorite past time right after eating dessert. So when Fae did something that required her to just sit around waiting for something to happen it was almost painful to her and that was really all that fishing was. She could already tell that this wouldn't be something she enjoyed, she just had to sit and wait for the line to twitch before she could really do much of anything at all.

It felt like ages before Fae felt the line jerk lightly again, smiling to herself as she waited for the larger shake that would tell her it was time to start the game of tug of war, but anticipation drained into annoyance as nothing came. The jerk was a false alarm, and Fae flopped back down into the seat of the rowboat not even having realized she had jumped to her feet. Fae promised herself then and there that if she ever focused on fishing again she wouldn't do it alone. This was a special brand of torture that she wouldn't be willing to put up with again for a long time.

The waiting didn't last much longer as the boat rocked slightly in the waves of the large lake, a small jerk had Fae immediately on her feet and hands at the ready. Was that a gleam in the water near her line? Anticipation mounted and mounted as Fae waited for the tell-tell sign of a real bite on the line. Only one more moment passed before it came and Fae reeled on her line, beginning the battle against the fish. This was already proving to be more difficult than the first fish she had caught, it seemed to be bigger and stronger than her first not so small catch. Back and forth they went, both losing and gaining ground, or water in this case, as they pulled on the taught line, but she could tell that she was winning. Painfully slowly the fish was brought closer and closer to the surface of the water and to the boat until at last, with one final massive pull she launched the fish into the air. The sunlight catching on the droplets of water flying through the sky and on the unnaturally glossy skin of the fish. Prismatic light being shot in all directions as the fish flew, struggling in the air to free itself from the line before it landed square in the boat, flopping around as it struggled to find water.

Fae smiled to herself, this was obviously the rainbow trout that Andrew had been talking about, with the way that the light caught on it and flung light in every color of the rainbow around she could see where it got its name. It was a quick trip back to the dock as Fae rowed herself through the water, having only taken a few awkward moments to reorient herself to the way the boat moved. The long haired young man was standing on the shore waiting for her as she ran aground, a large smile plastered on his face. "I see that you had some luck out there, my bait came in useful no doubt. I'll tell you what, why don't you keep that scale for yourself. I knew that you would be a prodigy fisher the moment I laid eyes on you and you did not disappoint." Fae accepted Andrew's proffered hand as she stepped out of the boat, pulling out the tin of bait "I can't honestly say how much it helped, but I got the fish at least. Thank you for helping me and letting me borrow it." She placed the small tin into his still outstretched hands and smiled at the man. He had an air of self confidence around him, one that wasn't narcissism, but rather self confidence. It reminded her of her friend Kas, and much like her father that brought a sorrowful smile to her lips. They were both gone, but she had promised that she'd keep on until she made it home, whatever that now looked like. She waved to Andrew and made her way back to town, her new gleaming scale in pocket, she didn't have a use for it just yet, but she knew that it would come in handy sometime soon.
