[F01] A typical day as a noob

Luke was doing some construction work with some NCPs out on floor 1. Nothing fancy, just, you know, the usual. Luke fused yet another piece into place. There were far too many chunks to fully repair the ceiling but he did his best before he was done for the day. 

“You know what, I think I’ve gotten my fill of going through strange games for a lifetime.” It was a joke, as Luke had no idea what was happening but he’d seemed alright. It was only then that he started to feel an tingling in his fingertips. He’d accidentally hit a nail.

“Ahh!” he shouted in surprise. His shout evolved into a scream of agony as he felt the pain of the nerve gear pierce into his brain. It was painful, but honestly rather subdued compared to having his body slowly heated over and over again. At least this pain was over with the moment his nerves calmed down.

A hand put itself on Luke’s shoulder as his pain started to die down. A white haired man stood next to him with a spear in his free hand. The man was dressed in all black with a distinctly evil look to his eye. And yet he looked concerned. 

“Oh great, you’re here,” Luke said with an involuntary sigh, now noticing that some others had come to do the job.

“I don’t know about how great it is,” the man said. He spoke in a raspy sort of hiss that one might expect from a being of pure evil incarnate. “We all have to survive in this world.”

Luke grabbed a large steel great sword from the local armory. It was a heavy weapon, but he was strong so he was able to heft it with little difficulty. He had been considering what kind of weapon he ought to  start using. He was starting to get more involved with combat and all. So many people in this area were using katana, and while he did think those were kickass weapons, he wasn’t sure if they were really his style. He’d gone through a katana phase in his past, but in his experience he really just wanted something big to hack into people… or monsters, you know.

He dragged the sword away from town so that he could try practicing it on some animals. Sure a training dummy would do, but there were boars roaming around and he wasn’t all too scared of one of them. Mostly because they were on the smaller side. He spotted one, then lunged at it, dropping his sword quickly as he moved. It’d charged him when it’d seen him, bumping him slightly as they both passed each other. Tit for tat, not bad.

Luke twirled the sword around, nearly nicking himself in the process. Such a large sword… why was he having so much difficulty hitting something so slow? He sighed, pointing it at the boar that was turning around to give him another shot. They ran at each other again, except when Luke swung down, he missed entirely this time. The sword dug into the ground and pushed him up off the ground. He would have likely suffered a fatal blow in a high stakes battle because of this blunder, but since the boar was short statured, it ran under where he’d just been. His incompetence had actually turned out to be quite the boon.  

 

“This just isn’t a good day for either of us is it?” Luke thought. He wished he was permitted to use magic to simply obliterate the boar, but this wasn’t that sort of game. He wanted to best the boar with his physical abilities only.

Luke allowed himself to carry his momentum to move out of the way of the boar. It was looking angry, and he was starting to feel angry himself. Why was killing this boar such an issue today? He sighed, holding his sword out. It felt heavier now that he’d used so much energy swinging it around. He’d been putting quite a bit of power into his swings instead of trying to accurately hit it. He supposed that he feared that a direct hit would probably kill it. He tried again, not learning anything from his mistakes. The sword nearly hit the boar this time, but it hopped to the side as they charged at each other once again. The boar then bucked its head up at him, managing to throw him off balance and tumble to the ground. 

“I’m going to get you,” he seethed. He was glad nobody was around to witness how much trouble he was having with such a simple creature.

Luke abandoned his run and swing strategy, instead choosing to take a breather. He didn’t want to admit it, but this boar was actually hurting him every time he let it hit him. He didn’t think that ought to be possible, what with how large their sizes were, but he had to accept it. If he didn’t land a good hit soon… he might actually need to run. He gripped the sword with both hands and let out a roar, swiping it in a horizontal slash as the boar approached. This time he hit it. It wasn’t a clean cut by any means, but it smashed the boar to the side and it hit a tree for good measure. 

“How’d you like that, fucker,” he said with a jeer. He could already taste its meat in his mouth (metaphorically). He hadn’t even planned on eating it, but he assumed that it would be quite tasty if he did.

The boar looked like it wanted to flee, but oh that poor sorry soul wasn’t going to be going anywhere. Luke wouldn’t allow it to after all the trouble it’d give him. Luke lunged at it, swinging in an arc that was very sloppy but still managed to land its mark. The blade sunk into the boar, and it let out a final groan of pain before dropping to the ground, dead.

 

Victory! He’d done it. The crude slices had completely ruined any chance of him getting any decent salvage from it, but he was still satisfied. The purpose of this was to practice with the sword, after all. Not to benefit from the slaying itself. He looked at the boar, imagining it sinking it into the ground where it could return to ‘nature’. He smiled and looked around. Surely there was something else he could test himself against? Something that was stronger?
