[SP-F1] »Earning A Living« (Complete, RIP in pieces Sunny)

Recommended Posts

Sunny sat up, looking around the small room he'd rented for the night. Thoughts of getting killed by a boar still swirled around in the hazy miasma of his thoughts as the world slowly came into focus. It was like 4 in the morning, what was he doing? This is how the majority of his days went, lazing around the Town of Beginnings, never daring to go beyond the walls. With good reason too, he'd nearly gotten killed by a simple boar yesterday!

With a grunt he got to his feet, quickly making his way out of Inn and onto the street. It was a cold night, but he didn't mind. His eyes scan up and down the street, his breath coming out in little puffs of vapor. With a sudden click of realization he sets off down the street, towards one of the smithys in town. He hoped that the shop in question he was heading towards didn't have business hours or anything. I mean why would it? NPCs don't need to sleep, right?

He stops at the door, the building itself was fairly plain, a small sign hanging above the door proclaiming it as "The Honed Edge". There weren't exactly business hours posted on the door, so with a mental shrug he turns the handle, quietly entering the shop, which indeed was still opened, the ever-present NPC standing behind a counter, an exclamation mark over his head signifying he had a quest. Sunny takes a few steps towards him, the NPC starting its dialogue.

"Greetings, adventurer! Have you ever thought to yourself if there's more to Aincrad than simply fighting? No? Well of course there is! Aincrad is filled with a multitude of activities! Take my shop for example. I am but a humble blacksmith, I make a living selling and maintaining weapons and armour. Does this sound like something that would interest you?"

Sunny looks down as the quest box pops up in his peripheral. "Earning a Living, huh? Why not?" With a small grin of determination he taps the circle button.

"Wonderful! For the first step in your journey, I need you to bring me a Fire-Iron Ingot! They can be found adorning the hides of the local Rock Boars, but be careful, they are known to be incredibly terriorial. Return here with three ingots and the next step of your training can begin."

Sensing the dialogue is finished, Sunny excuses himself from the shop. His lips fall into a slight scowl at the thought of having to go up against those damn boars again... but with a low growl he dismisses the thought to the back of his mind. He was done being a burden. He needed to start doing his part to contribute to this game, for everyone's sake. He clenches his fist as he turns towards the edge of town, making his way at a brisk walk towards the infamous Boar Fields.

He exhales slowly as he stops on a hill, the sun just barely starting to crest over the horizon. With a quick swipe through his inventory, his glaive is equipped and he scans the surroundings for a target. He spots one fairly quickly, the boar simply wandering around the grassy field, sniffing the dirt. He lowers his glaive into a combat stance, the blade glowing as he charges one of his only sword skills, Bright Lance. One moment he's standing there, and the next he's flying towards the boar, glaive braced to spear the boar in the side.

He groans in annoyance as the boar wriggles to the side just in time to avoid the strike. Thankfully it was thrown off balance enough to not be able to immediately counterattack.

Wasting no time, he fluidily shifts his balance around to pivot the glaive around his body, to slash the boar across the side. His blade glows as he excutes his only other sword skill, Sweeping Flourish.

Sunny grins as he sees his blade connect with the side of the boar, throwing it to the side.

»Sunny dealt 2 damage.«

»Boar: 1/3 HP«

What he wasn't counting on though was the boar using the momentum gained from getting slammed in the side to gore him in the ribcage. This was a familiar feeling. These boars really had it out for him.

»Boar dealt 2 damage. ~Crit!~«

»Sunny: 3/5 HP«

No. He was tired of running. He helped create this game damnit, he wasn't going to let a measley level 1 boar kill him! It was a rare sight indeed, that his calm demeanor was broken by this wild animal. With a furious battle cry he stabs at the boar with all he's got!

With a guttural crunch his glaive goes clean through the boar. He snarls in fury as he lifts the boar off the ground with his glaive, sweeping it over his head and slamming it down into the earth, cutting the boar in two as it disintegrates.

»Boar: -2/3 HP«

»Monster Defeated«

»x1« Fire-Iron Ingot

He takes this opportunity to flop down into the grass, rolling over onto his back, arms and legs splayed wide as he stares at the slowly brightening morning sky.

Another boar killed, another brush with death. Either he was really bad at this game, or this game was actually really hard. Weren't most MMOs these days fairly easy? He remembered his olden days in WoW, where the lower levels were a cakewalk. This was something else entirely...

He watches as the sun finally finishes peeking over the horizon, its well and fully morning now, dawn having passed. He takes a deep breath as he can already feel the warmth of the sun on his skin. It was hard to believe all of this was virtual at times. I guess that's the wonder of a direct neural interface.

With a yawn, he stetches out in the grass before sitting up. He could see the town bristling to life in the distance. Grabbing the glaive that had been resting in the grass before him he uses it as a crutch to get back to his feet, already feeling a bit better after his short breather.

»Sunny: 4/5 HP«

He only needed two more ingots... so theoretically that only meant two more boars. He can do this.

He looks down at his glaive, examining the worn, virtual object. It certainly wasn't anything special, being a basic starting weapon, but it seemed to get the job done. It was his own ineptitude that limited its usefulness.

Setting his sights on the second boar, he launches towards it with a menacing Bright Lance, determined to get good.

Before the boar even has time to react, its absolutely devastated by his assault, not even having time to whimper before it vanishes.

»Boar: -1/3 HP«

»Monster Defeated«

»Loot Obtained«

»x1« Fire-Iron Ingot

That was more like it, the boar didn't even have time to react, let alone gore him! This was perfect, he only needed one more ingot. He could practically taste the quest completion.

He rolls his shoulders as he prepares for the third and (hopefully) last boar.

He was starting to see the merits in religion. He was almost considering thanking god for allowing him to progress this far on the quest.

Almost.

He gives his glaive a few warming up twirls, readying the blade forward to dispatch this last boar easily with a Bright Lance to the face. He wished he could change the name of the skill, but that wasn't his department. This isn't even a lance.

»15« Col

Oh, he just killed that boar in one hit. Wow, maybe this really does get easier. He's just about to put his glaive away to walk back to town when he notices a window pop up.

-Bonus Objective-

Slay the Alpha Boar and retrieve its tusk.

Reward: 50 Col

He hmms. An alpha boar? Hell, he could barely take on a regular boar. But... hmmm. He brings a finger up to his chin, stroking his stubble as he mulls it over. I have been killing these things pretty quickly as of late... He pulls up the map, tapping on it to bring up the display in his vision, turning until his vision focuses on the target, a fierce looking boar  almost twice the size of the ones he'd been fighting. He brings up its healthbar, only five health? That's three hits max... He dismisses all the interfaces, pursing his lips as he swins his glaive around the center, bending his knees as he breaks off into a sprint at this Alpha Boar. If he drops to two HP... he'll make a break for it. It's only an extra 50 Col, after all.

As he closes in on his quarry he moves the glaive into the starting position for Bright Lance. Hopefully he'll have a more engaging skill rotation once he gets a couple levels in him...

He stabs violently into the boar, managing to get a good couple hits in on it. The boar is not amused, and retaliates in kind, rustling him a bit as it bashes Sunny with its forehead.

»Alpha Boar dealt 1 damage.«

»Sunny: 3/5 HP«

He follows up his combo with a fluid Sweeping Flourish, the ending position of Bright Lance naturally following into the central pivot that begins it. Him and the Boar were on equal footing right now, the only advantage he had was doing a bit more damage. But the crit system can be a fickle mistress, as he's learned very quickly.

Sunny yelps in horror as the massive beast impossibly dodges past his attack to grind its tusks right through his chest. Sunny sputters a bit as the beast lifts him off the ground and throws him ass over shoulders.

He lays on the ground, splayed out flat on his back, pixels slowly bleeding out of his chest as he stares up at the morning sky. As more and more of his essence bleeds away he simply thinks to himself

What a shitty way to die.
