[SP-F1] »Earning A Living« (Complete)

This was it. This was going to be the killing strike. He could feel it. Who ever said wishful thinking gets you nowhere was an idiot because this is definitely, totally, 100% going to kill this kobold. He charges his sword with one final Bloodletter because he is going to kill that damn kobold.

Suck on that, destiny! With a furious battle cry slashes and stabs at the poor kobold like a madman. It shrieks in horror as it's practically eviscerated. With a triumphant laugh he stabs his sword down through the floating pixels of what used to be a kobold, relieved when the loot window finally pops up.

Aquila reclines, having found a new hill to rest on that's closer to the mob spawns. He'd really need to look around town for some more rations. Bread and water wasn't really doing it for him. He takes a bite out of the loaf. He wonders how his shop's doing. His dad probably had to come out of retirement... he can imagine his mother coming by to his hospital room every day, trying her hardest not to cry as she watched her baby boy slowly wither away in that bed... Aquila sniffs. No need in getting all misty eyed now.

He rolls his shoulders as he stands up, adjusting the slightly tight shirt he's currently wearing. He still had two more to go. That NPC better not be lying to him about this... could NPCs even lie?

Aquila calmly approaches Kobold #5, rotating his blade to catch the sun menacingly. He stops just outside the aggro range, raising and pulling the blade back to point the tip at the kobold before kicking off to charge at it.

He grins as his blade sinks into the kobold, which is taken by surprise. It flails its weapon wildly but Aquila brushes its blade off to the side casually. This one looked particularly pathetic as it stared up at the mountain of a man that just attacked it., seeming to visibly sweatdrop as it shakily raises its axe to defend from the next attack.

He twirls his blade in a show of aggression as he glares at the kobold. His intimidation tactics seem to be working, as the creature is trembling fiercely. He quickly moves his sword down into an attacking position, his face hardening as he recalls these kobold's penchant for trickery. He wasn't going to be lured into a false sense of dominance again.

Both parties clash blades for but a moment as much weaker kobold just barely gets himself out of the path of the blade. They reach an unspoken agreement to ignore that attack. He really needed to think up some better attack patterns, and also learn the secret these kobolds seem to know to avoid his attacks. Maybe he can befriend them and be taught by their village shaman the ancient ways of the Kobold Tribes. He chuckles to himself a bit.

His chuckling escalates into a sort of... raucous laughter as he brings his blade down towards the kobold brutally.

He probably looks like a madman, laughing wildly as he cuts down poor little kobolds. He could've sworn that hit was hard enough to bury the kobold in the dirt. I wonder if the kobolds had a law system? Was he viewed as a mass murderer in their eyes? Maybe they'll send bounty hunters after him to avenge their fallen comrades. Nah, that's probably a little too complex for the game to create on the fly. That was a feature that had been advertised on the box, an emergent AI system that created quests on the fly to theoretically provide unlimited content with minimal human intervention.

Right, he was still fighting this poor little creature. He almost felt bad that they didn't have enough intelligence to run away in fear, conveniently leaving their quest items behind. Oh well, he only needed one more hit, hopefully he can reign in his butterfingers long enough to accomplish that.

He lunges forward quickly, aiming to put the poor battered kobold out of its misery with one final hit.

And he does just that, cleanly pushing the tip of his blade into the kobold's chest as it went to strike with its weapon. He watched the life drain from its eyes as it disintegrated. He wasn't a bad guy for killing these? He'd never given it this much thought when it was just him sitting in front of a monitor watching his avatar in WoW cut down legions of enemies. But this was different, it was so much more... real. It was still fake, yeah, but something about actually holding the blade in your hands and going through the virtual physical movements necessary to swing it...

He was probably fine. I mean these things respawned anyway. he brushes the loot window aside as he scans his surroundings for the last one he needed.

He was so close to being done with all of this. He was quickly bearing down on the last kobold, wasting no time in lunging forward with his sword.

He goes flying right past this one, missing entirely as the kobold practically clotheslines him with its sword, catching him hard in the chest. So this one was crafty, huh? His anger only seemed to grow as he seethes at the pitiful excuse for a creature that looked so insignificant in his shadow... Just how intelligent were kobolds? They were intelligent enough to make tools and form societal bonds and villages, but did they understand fear? How could these things be so confident in their own ability that they could stare up at a creature five times their size and not immediately scamper away in terror?

None of it mattered. The only thing that mattered now was killing this final kobold and returning to town. His sword glowed with crimson intent as he let Bloodletter control his movements.

He advances on the kobold with reckless abandon, getting in a good couple hits, ignoring the slash across his leg. He still retained the upper hand, the only way he could fail now is if the system flat out kicked him in the back of the knees. And he wasn't going to let that happen. He needed to build his strength, that was the only way he was getting out of this hell. He would march right up to floor 100 and punch that final boss in the face.

He recollects himself and renews his assault. These kobolds sure did love going for leg shots. It makes sense with their height, he figures. They probably can't manage to jump with every swing like Yoda.

In contrast to all of his other gruesome kills, the kobold had actually surrendered. It was too bad it surrendered too late for him to stay his blade. That was the kill that actually made him feel a pang of regret. It had tried to surrender. Maybe it had a little kobold wife and little kobold babies back home.

He dismisses the loot window as he turns towards the town. All he needed to do now was return to town to deliver them.

After a long trek back to the Town of Beginnings he knocks roughly on the door to the shop, not waiting for the NPC to answer the door before he barges in. Depositing the weapons unceremoniously on the counter he demands the NPC begin teaching him immediately, making it very clear he had a much more difficult time getting these than he'd like to admit.

The NPC relents and takes the weapons into the basement, beckoning for him to follow. He stoops down as he squeezes through the small doorway and down the narrow staircase. He takes a seat next to the NPC as he observes how he takes the blades off the weaponry and throws them into the crucible, waiting a few seconds for the metal to melt down. He taps on the interface which causes the crucible to automatically pour into a mold, which solidifies on its own in a few seconds into a kobold-steel ingot.

It seemed easy enough. SAO simplified down the process to make it easy for the players to do it, it seems. The NPC directs him to take the cooled ingot and place it in the forge, to let it heat up enough for him to shape it. After a minute the interface dings and he pulls the ingot out with a pair of grippers, transferring it over to the anvil. The NPC explained that you don't actually have to shape the weapon, simply hit the hot ingot a few times and the system handles the rest.

He nods as he grabs the offered hammer, giving the ingot a strong whack, visibly deforming the ingot. He hits it a few more times until the ingot starts glowing, forming itself slowly into a sword...

As soon as its done forming though, the sword cracks in half, dissolving on the anvil. The NPC explains that failures will happen often, and that he will only get better with practice. He offers him a modest supply of ingots so that he can practice on his own. Aquila thanks the man for his help as he excuses himself from the shop.
