(SP-F1) The First Hunt

Recommended Posts

The grass covered field seemed to go on for miles. Ebony was a ways out from the starting city, preparing to go on her first hunt. She had yet to find anyone to come with her and had decided that she had best level up in order to make herself more appealing to parties. It was more dangerous to go solo, but she really didn't have much of a choice. Still, she would take it slow and run away when she needed to. She flicked her head to the side, her long black hair moving in a graceful arc to fall behind her against her back. She unsheathed her dagger and held it out in front of her, heading to one of the boars. This was a game, which meant that those monsters she encountered here should be relatively easy. As people got to higher levels the difficulty would increase. That was one thing that she didn't like about these games, grinding. VRMMOs made it more fun at least. In computer games it was usually so boring that it was painful.

Ebony leaped at the boar, making a stabbing motion with her dagger. She misjudged though and overshot by a few inches, missing the boar completely. She brushed her hand along her forehead, pushing some strands of hair that had fallen out of place back behind her ear. She returned her attention back to the boar in time to see it slam into her side. It was a rookie mistake. You always pay attention to the fight. She stared in shock as her health lowered a fourth of the way. These were supposed to be the easy monsters! She backed away slowly, judging the monsters speed. She didn't want to risk getting hit again.

Ebony watched the boar warily, her eyes gliding over it, looking for weaknesses. It's long brown fur looked tough, and the only place the boar didn't have fur was on it's insides, it's nose, and it's eyes. Ebony's eyes furrowed as she found her target. She raised her dagger up in front of her, and held her other arm out a bit for balance. She sprinted forward as the animal lunged at her. She slid the side, away from the boars tusks, and combined her momentum with the boars to bury her dagger up to the hilt in the monsters eye. There was a moment of silence where the world seemed to stand still. Then, the creature burst into glowing blue shards as a notification flared up in front of her.

Ebony tapped the accept button and started to walk away. She hadn't had too much trouble with the monster, but it had still taken off a good portion of her health. She didn't know whether this was one of the harder monsters or one of the easier ones. She didn't have any potions, but she still had three quarters of her health, so she decided to continue with her hunt. She hadn't made any money yet, but hopefully the item would sell for a good amount of col. From her experience with games monsters didn't drop items often.

Speaking of which, it wouldn't hurt to try it on. Ebony swiped her hand in the air to pull up her menu. With a few more swipes and taps she had equipped the arm guard onto her left arm. It didn't look too bad with her outfit, and the brown fur contrasted nicely with the white of her shirt. She glanced up from her inspection of her outfit and started to walk off towards another monster, this one a shaggy grey furred wolf. It looked a bit more challenging than that last one, but due to the fact that it was so close to where the boar had spawned, it was likely around the same level.

The piece of armor didn't seem to be doing much for her stat-wise, as she hadn't put any points into armor. Still, that didn't really matter to her at that moment. It looked cool and matched her outfit and that was all that mattered. As she approached the wolf she noticed that her health bar had already regenerated from her last fight. It looked like she was all set to get some more materials, and hopefully some col as well. She adjusted her grip on the plain brown leather handle of her dagger and assumed her combat stance. She had always preferred daggers in the games that she played. Her characters were always speed based and the dagger was usually the speediest of the bunch. When she had first started doing virtual reality games she had started to research the nuances of knife fighting in her free time. She had the stance down and the quick jabs, but she had yet to master the more complicated dagger moves. Before she got close enough to aggro the wolf, she looked it over, noting the sharp teeth in its mouth and the claws on it's feet. It didn't look like it would be too difficult, but it certainly didn't look like it would be easy either.

She approached slowly, erring on the side of caution rather than charging right in. From what she knew about real world wolves they were extremely fast and ferocious, and a surprise attack would likely only get her mauled. The wolf growled at her as she got closer, and the hair on it's back seemed to stand up, giving it a more intimidating look. She moved closer, shuffling her feet so that she wouldn't be caught off balance when it attacked. But it didn't. It just stayed where it was. When she was within reach she jabbed with the dagger at the wolf. She had barely started the attack when the wolf lunged forwards, right past her dagger, biting her arm quickly before withdrawing. It appeared that the wolf had gotten in a critical hit, and her health drained down to halfway. Hunting was definitely harder than she had first assumed. She had a newfound respect for the players on the front lines.

Ebony grinned wickedly. Even though her health was in the yellow, she had discovered her opponents weakness. The lunging attack of the wolf couldn't dodge a slashing attack. It had handled her stab at it well, but a slash would knock it right out of the air if it lunged again. She adjusted her footing and held the dagger up. She feinted a slash with the dagger, and the wolf leaped at immediately after the slash had missed. It was a feint though, so Ebony was prepared and brought her dagger right back around to slash through the wolfs throat while it was in mid air lunging at her throat. It landed behind her, having been knocked off course, and shatter into blue crystals, just as the boar had before. She looked over the notice that had popped up in front of her, detailing her loot. Another material and another item. This one wasn't a piece of armor, but rather a simple necklace. It didn't have any special effects, but it did look really cool. The necklace consisted of what appeared to be a rough leather string with three pure white wolf claws hung on it.

Ebony had been noticing the plants as she walked around the plains. They didn't seem like they were their just for show. Although she didn't have much knowledge about plants, she was sure that some of them were useful for something or another. She leaned down and started to pull on one of the large flowers, pulling on it with all her strength. It seemed to be deep rooted, and it took a couple of minutes before it came up. It ripped out of the ground but before she could get a better look at it burst into blue crystals. Either she had done something wrong or it wasn't supposed to be usable.

She took a step back from where the plant had been and decided to move on. She had a way that was guaranteed to get her materials and items, and since it was guaranteed she'd rather do that than try to pull up plants that might not even give her anything. Maybe you need some type of herbology skill, if that even existed. It didn't take her long to fin the next mob. It was another small sized boar, almost exactly the same as the last boar that she had fought.  Maybe it was the same and had just respawned. That didn't matter. A mob was a mob was a mob. She moved around behind it before moving in, getting a slash in on its side before it turned around. She backed up and prepared to attack again.
