Tavern Music

The sun was setting on the horizon and with it so too did the knight's chances of going out on an adventure. All of his guildmates seemed to be busy this evening, but that wouldn't stop him from spending a night out on the town. He ultimately chose to travel to Armadillo on the fifth floor. Even at night the desert heat was incredible and if survival wasn't part of his arsenal he would probably avoid the floor altogether. A nearby tavern would offer at least some relief and so he entered, casually making his way to the counter where he asked only for a cup of water. Seul never was too found of alcohol and in a game like this he liked to keep his wits about him as much as possible. Others seemed to hold a different perspective though as he glanced around at the patrons who were seemingly having grand times with their respective parties. All except one man who happened to be sitting next to him at the bar.

The guy was crying and chugging down his drinks without even giving himself much time to breathe in between. What was his deal? Usually he would have just ignored someone like that. It wasn't his job or place to play hero for others. After all, the bottom line was that he was only doing what he had to do to make sure he could see the 100th floor. But the man would not let up with his sobbing and the whole thing was starting to wear thin on his patience. Eventually the knight would address the man directly. No one else was going to. "What's your problem?"

The man slammed his cup on the counter before leaning over to one side in an attempt to rest his head against the knight's shoulder... To which Seul responded by jerking away. He'd lend an ear to the guy's troubles but drew the line at giving him a shoulder to cry on. "You see, there's this cave full of treasure not too far from this town... The loot  in there spreads for as far as the eye can see." He proceeded to say. "Isn't that a good thing?" The man shook his head furiously in response. It was obvious there was more to this story that he hadn't shared yet. The boy just wished the guy would hurry up and spit it out... Not literally, of course. He did seem a little drunk after all. "The thing is my brother Cassin and I tried to enter the place and were jumped by a band of thieves. Seemed like they own the place... And they even took my brother. I don't know what to do; I do not possess the skills to rescue him!"

"Well, I wouldn't want to be you right about now."

To be kidnapped by thieves... Seul knew the feeling all too well. If anything, the <<Escape>> quest had showed him how easy it was to breakout of a heavily guarded prison hideout controlled by rogues. Still, this was only a child they were talking about. The boy Cassin probably lacked any ability to fight much like his brother. Everything about the situation was dumb. Was the treasure within the cave worth putting themselves at risk? It's not like the knight could say. He didn't know their circumstances and he wasn't about to ask either. He didn't care.

"Please, I'm begging you!" The NPC had managed to hug him now, sobbing on Seul's coat and starting to cause a bit of a scene in the tavern. "Alright, alright; just get off!" He replied while pushing the man away. It took another moment for him to settle down before speaking again. "Thank you... I didn't mention it earlier, but my name is Ali. Here is the map to the hideout. If you help me I'll give you a nice reward!"

Travelling Theme

About an hour had passed since he left town after accepting the quest. By now the moon was floating high in the sky above and the darkness was the only thing present to keep him company. He must have walked for what seemed like ages, holding his cloak in front of his face to keep sand from getting in the way through the whole trip. After scaling a dune he could see in the distance an opening in a rock formation that seemed to be glowing intensely. Caves never exactly glow on their own, so if he had to guess there was most likely a fire burning inside. 

"I think that's the place."

The immediate entrance of the cave lead to a small path that was illuminated by wall-mounted torches. This was indeed the place that Ali was talking about. There were no warning signs or anything to indicate intelligent life other than the fires, but those should have provided enough of a warning to anyone who might have stumbled in. Now it was just a matter of finding Cassin and getting back to town in one piece. Seul tried moving about as quietly as he could across the sandy floor with his steps being at least somewhat muffled by the terrain.

Eventually the hall opened up into a much larger room... One with literal mountains of gold coins, jewels, and fancy weapons strewn about. It looked like a stereotypical thief lair. There was only one thing missing-

"How did you get in here?!"

The thieves. From across the room four thieves wandered in just as he had arrived and they wasted no time with spotting him. He wasn't exactly in the mood to talk though. From the looks of it they all carried daggers. If that was the case it would make for an interesting fight Seul drew his own dagger and rushed forward with his shield raised for a preemptive attack on the thief standing in front. His weapon shined brightly as the Cross Edge dug into the enemy's skin and knocked off a large chunk of his health.

The thieves seemed to be sturdy, but they didn't hit very hard, which was evident by the minimal damage their own sword arts actually caused.

Seul wanted nothing more than to land another hit, but it would seem his opponent would get to cling to life for a while longer as the blade of his dagger was intercepted by another. The other thieves moved in to protect their wounded ally and before he could respond with his shield the player found himself getting struck by Tri Pierce on four separate occasions. Still relatively low damage. Given a few seconds to recover, the holy blessing would make it as if he was never injured in the first place. Still, his energy wouldn't hold out forever. He'd need to be more careful about his strikes if he was going to make it through this in one piece.

Despite being surrounded he managed to push his way through and the three healthy thieves to target their dying ally. The glowing dagger in his hand found its mark this time and delivered a devastating Cross Edge to the NPC's chest that sent it into the afterlife in a matter of mere seconds. "One down." He was pleased to say the least. One of them was now out of the way and that just left a couple more to pick off. Of course the thieves didn't take too kindly to him killing their friend and retaliated with their own shots in the form of Infinite.

Each of the three remaining thieves only managed to scratch him with their sword arts. The boy's shield would act as a wall between the two forces and provide him with enough time to retreat backwards and out of the way of the next set of attacks. On the bright side his health had restored to full and his energy was returning slowly as well. At any rate he'd at least be able to endure the onslaught of blows from the NPCs long enough to pick them off one by one.

The only reason he held back now was because it would have been foolish to needlessly spend energy when he was outnumbered in such a way. No, he needed to rest in between his strikes otherwise the enemy might obtain the upper hand. The thieves took note of his inaction and decided to attack as a unit once again with their sword arts hitting him in succession. At worst they only served to push him back slightly while his health bar fell by an insignificant amount.

He was still waiting for the prime opportunity to strike. The thieves were not letting up in their attacks though, throwing jabs left and right as if they were nothing. One of the few joys of being an NPC in this world was that most of them weren't restricted in regards to using energy to perform their attacks. Lucky them. Thankfully they didn't hit very hard and he would just heal up in a few seconds. "Thank you once again Hirru for this awesome piece of equipment."

Still waiting. At this rate his energy would fully restore. But it wasn't like he was actually complaining about that. The real problem was the thieves. They all moved too quickly. By the time he was able to get close enough to launch an attack the target would sprint away and the others would swoop in to counter. It was more annoying than anything else. His health was perpetually stuck in place as much as theirs was. All he knew was that it was only a matter of time before they'd slip up.

"Quit jumping around and fight me!" He'd yell while tightening the grip on his shield. The thieves stuck to their usual tactics of drawing him one way while the others hit him from a different angle. Fighting like this was frustrating the knight to no end. How much longer would he need to endure this? Was the kid he was looking for even worth all this trouble. At this point he was tempted to just kill the boy himself and be done with it all. "Ali SERIOUSLY owes me one for this bull!"

As always the thieves were one step ahead of him in their movements but when they tried their group attack this time he was ready. With his shield he spun around to face each of them as they got close, effectively keeping them all at bay in the process. The fight was tougher than he originally imagined. In hindsight he probably should have brought along someone else, but having other people around often came with a cost. Either splitting the rewards or needing to protect them if they weren't capable of doing it.

He was starting to get sick of this. Being forced to stand still for such a long amount of time was annoying. If he was anyone else then this quest would have been finished ages ago. One of the drawbacks of not having accuracy on any of his equipment, but he needed the damage in order to finish them off. It wasn't like they were an actual threat to him. He just needed to express a little patience. Then he would be able to strike them all down and be back at the tavern before the year ended.

Why was the game torturing him like this? He just wanted to defeat the thieves and be on his way. Maybe there was a bug in the programming of the enemy's AI. This was getting ridiculous now, he just couldn't seem to get a good angle on them to execute his sword arts. Meanwhile they were able to strike him without consequence indefinitely. Part of him was tempted to just give up and walk out now. It wasn't like they would be able to hurt him if he did.

Still there was something keeping him there in an effort to see the quest through to the end. The thieves were obviously not going to give up any time soon. With that being said, if it was a fight they wanted then it was a fight they were going to get. Maybe. If he could just hit one of them. Just one was al he was asking for, but they all moved too fast for his short blade to reach. The only reason he probably even hit the first one was because he took the initiative to make a preemptive strike.

Once again the battle had come to a complete standstill. How could he be doing so poorly against such weak opponents? It was getting ridiculous. It wasn't like he was losing... But he definitely wasn't winning. Classifying the fight in such black and white terms would only serve to annoy him further. They were evenly matched, regardless of how much he wanted to deny it. "Times like this I wish I had some goddamn accuracy. This would have been finished ages ago if I did!"

Maybe this time would be different? He was foolish for thinking so. As his dagger cut through the air the closest thief jumped out of the way and scampered over to stand with his allies on the other side of the room. The whole fight was starting to feel like a troll, placed in by the creators of the game simply to see how long players would keep it up until  they either died or got frustrated enough to quit. Seul had had enough. Sheathing his dagger he took a seat on the floor with his legs cross, refusing to move any further until he was certain the fight would start going his way. With a flick of his fingers his menu HUD opened up and in another moment a mass message had been composed.

Of course he was sort of mad when no one showed up. He waited and waited, but another player never showed up. With a frustrated expression on his face he rose up and struck the closest thief he could reach with a Cross Edge. The NPC was obviously taken by surprise and in their usual fashion they all rushed in to attack but ended up getting their knives blocked by the boy's shield. Predictable was the only word he could think of at this point. Fighting the same enemy for so long lead to the patterns in attacks being revealed, making them easier to block.

It felt like he was getting back into the swing of things. Another thief would lose more than half of its health at the blade of his dagger and when all was said and done none of them were able to land a hit on him once again. If he maintained the same momentum moving forward he might just have a chance of getting through the quest with some of his sanity still intact. The enemy was bound to fight a little more cautious now, but there was no time to show hesitation.
