It was just another day, like any other before. Hunting, looting, looking for treasure chests, the usual. Bahr had been on the 12th floor for quite some time now, slaughtering alligators and taking their pelts for his tailoring. Then it started to rain. And then it started to pour. Before long, the swamp had swelled to double the usual amount of water, stifling his movement and making him sluggish. it was cold, miserable, and wet. Bahr cursed whatever gods governed the weather system of the game.

As he slogged through the swamp on his way back to town to go to a more dry floor, he noticed something peculiar up ahead. Apparently it had noticed him as well, because as soon as it looked his direction it started sloshing with surprising speed through the swamp in his direction. It was difficult to describe, large and scaly like a gigantic sea lizard. It rushed him so quickly that he didn't even have a chance to get his guard up. The beast flung him high into the air, the wind being knocked straight from his lungs as he came back against the ground. He gurgled against the filthy water of the swamp before emerging, gasping for air. Furious already, he charged up his blade and ran at the overgrown lizard, slashing at it with all of his might and reducing its HP to less than half.

Bahr glanced at his health bar, and then did a double take. Unbelievable. Sure, this monster was big and intimidating, but Bahr never could have imagined that it would decimate his health like this. He was at a loss for words, but that was fine. What came next wouldn't require talking anyway. Fueled with a rage he hadn't felt in ages, he dashed forward with his sword charged, yelling out as he slashed ferociously into the beast's hide once more. It let out a cry, and in the next moment it was gone, only a puff of blue pixels left behind where it once stood.

Bahr sheathed his weapon and took a deep breath, trying his best to calm himself down before he hurt himself somehow. That was not a normal mob for this floor. Bahr knew because he had been fighting them all day and slaying hordes with ease. Was that some sort of unannounced field boss?

With the Sea Wyvern slain, the rain slowly started to dissipate until it was no more. With time, the swamp would return to normal, and Bahr would be allowed to resume his hunt. Which was a good thing, because now he was wound up and ready to slaughter anything daring enough to cross his path. He would feel sorry for the hostile denizens of this floor, if not for the fact that they were comprised purely of pixels and he hated them. Though, that might be a bit hypocritical, considering Bahr himself was also only comprised of pixels in this world. 

It may have been a good opportunity to collect some loot, though. Bahr opened his menu and navigated to the equipment panel, swapping out his Hero's Hakama for vanity pants and equipping the Gloves of Caerus - one of his prized possessions, offering the wearer extraordinary luck in times where luck may not have been merited. It was a neat little way to "cheat" the system and nab himself better loot and more col.

As eager as he was to smash some skulls in, even Bahr understood that he was going to need to need to take a few minutes to recover his lost HP. Rushing in against a horde of foes would only lead to an untimely demise, which would be a straight up shame after having endured so much to get this far. Only weeks ago, Bahr had been toiling away in the Town of Beginnings lamenting his circumstances. Now he was a full-fledged warrior, confident in his ability to take on all but the toughest of foes on the higher levels. And even when he couldn't take on a tough enemy, Alec would have his back and eat up the damage so Bahr could slay it.

He wondered how Alec was doing. They hadn't met up again or so much as talked to one another since their recent hunting trip on the eleventh floor, which had turned out to be a most lucrative endeavor. Bahr accrued riches and items the likes of which he couldn't have even imagined getting on his own, and learned that having a hunting buddy would always lead to a better time.

And yet, here he stood in a putrid swamp, standing water devouring his appendages to halfway up his shins without a friendly soul in sight. Somehow Bahr always managed to do this - put himself in a situation where he had nobody around, and then complain about it. It wasn't anybody else's fault that he was out here alone. He had simply woken up and decided that that was what he wanted to do. He grabbed his gear, ate a quick meal and walked out of the door, immediately traveling to the nearest teleport gate and making his way here. He hadn't even considered inviting anyone else along.

It was due partly, he was sure, to the fact that he hadn't been quite himself as of late. Ever since he picked up the Scarecrow's Sickle from Macradon, he had found himself becoming progressively more and more bloodthirsty. The violence fueled him like coal into a train. He would invite others along, but he was afraid that they would see him for what he had become - a mindless, rampaging lunatic.

Speaking of being a rampaging lunatic, there was a pack of mobs up ahead. They were Swamp Lizards - foul creatures that walked on two legs and carried curved swords. Despite carrying real weaponry, they didn't really seem to pack more of a punch than other mobs in the area. It was possible that their sword granted them extra accuracy, which Bahr himself had been on the receiving end of more than just a few times. 

He walked idly toward them as the pack took notice, activating his Disguise skill to distort his image as they brandished their weapons and all charged him at the same time. He grinned as he unsheathed his blade, charging it up and ripping into all four of them the second they were within range. Once Swamp Lizard in particular still managed to make its sword connect, despite the evasion boost from his skill, dealing modest damage for what was usual on the floor.

Bahr wasn't mad that he had been hit. He didn't even flinch. It just gave him an excuse to go harder. Faster. An opportunity to take out his built up frustration and energy on these scaled pricks. He charged up his blade and brought it back, slicing into the lot of them and causing all four to combust into puff of blue triangular pixels. Shortly after, a loot panel populated in front of Bahr. He had nabbed himself a decent amount of col, some materials, and a Rare variant of virtually every item you could get from a mob drop. He nodded to himself for the decent haul and dismissed the window.

Looking around, there weren't any more mobs in his immediate vicinity, but he did see more groups of Swamp Lizards skulking around not far from where he was. A little bit of leg work, and he would be looking at even more loot.

Or, he could take the uncharacteristic route and simply wait for another group of mobs to spawn. But what was the fun in that? No, he was a seasoned warrior, and he would seek out his victims. Waiting around and idling was for the weak. He sheathed his weapon and started meandering toward the nearest group, his boots sloshing through the shallow water as gunk and muck clung to them and weighed him down.

As good as the mobs on this floor were, the conditions for combat were absolutely miserable. The swamp always managed to seep water into every square centimeter of his clothing and soak him to the core. But there was something that Bahr liked about that. It was uncomfortable, yes, but it filled with a rage that fueled battles in a way that he didn't experience on most floors. Noticing a lilly pad nearby, Bahr scooped it up and stuffed it into his inventory.

Yes, even if he hated every second of his venture here, it just made him that much more ferocious in combat. That meant he could kill more mobs faster, and collect more loot quicker. In the end, these sorts of environments were places that Bahr thrived. Better yet, there was nobody around to judge him for his almost animalistic destruction of everything that stood in his path. If Bahr were a floor boss, he was sure he would be a tough one.

But alas, he was a mere human, forced to endure the dregs that the floating castle Aincrad had to offer, shambling from pointless location to pointless location until something interesting happened or some needy NPC wanted him to do something for them. It was a shame that Kayaba hadn't decided to throw more twists and turns into the game, or even more interesting environments. Everything just felt like more of the same. He bent over and scooped up another lilly pad, stashing it in his inventory.

It wasn't long before Bahr rolled up on the next pack of Swamp Lizards, who detected his presence immediately. How couldn't they? He sloshed around loudly wherever he went in this godforsaken swamp. But Bahr didn't mind. He liked it when mobs came running to their end.

As they dashed in, they used a different attack pattern than the first unit had. One attacked first, and Bahr managed to elusively slip past it and rip into the other three with his sword before they could catch him off guard. He had learned during his fight against the goblins on the eleventh floor, who had used similar attack patterns in the past to catch him off guard. Despite reeling from the blow Bahr had just delivered, one of the Swamp Lizards that he struck managed to get a clean hit on him, depleting a portion of his HP. But it wasn't cause for concern yet.

In fact, taking damage was rarely a concern for Bahr. Unless he went up against a super tough mob like the Sea Wyvern from earlier, he never really worried about it. So a mob hit him. So what? He still had plenty of health, and he would be able to slay the enemies in his path before they even knew what to do with their successful hit. To demonstrate this, he charged up his blade and carved into all four at once, three of them disintegrating into clouds of blue pixels upon contact. The mob that he hadn't managed to hit earlier remained, retaliating with a crude strike with its curved sword. Bahr easily parried the attack and kicked the Swamp Lizard off of him, laughing as he did so. What poor form. Such a lowly creature could never even dream of taking down somebody as powerful as and dashing as Bahr.

Bahr stared coldly into the eyes of the last remaining mob, no doubt sending shivers down his spine. Even though it still had half its health left, it was a goner it. Bahr knew it, the Swamp Lizard knew it, and any potential spectators knew it as well. "You should be proud. You're the only mob to have lasted this long against me today," Bahr mused as the grotesque reptile before him quivered in fear. "I'm afraid it's time for lights out, though." With that, Bahr charged up his blade and slashed into the Swamp Lizard, causing it to combust into a cloud of blue pixels instantly.

The loot panel displayed mediocre loot, much like everything else Bahr had looted today. Where were the perfect weapons? The perfect armors? Consumables? All he had managed to nab were rares. It wasn't that they were bad, but no player worth their salt was still roaming around with rare equipment at this stage. It was an embarrassment to be caught with any.

Well, perhaps it was a bit hyperbolic to describe it as embarrassing. More like there was really no excuse for it. Short of getting a rare item with a ridiculously good unique enhancement, why bother carrying one around? The blacksmiths and tailors of the game (Bahr included) could craft perfect equipment at the drop of a hat. Well, maybe not quite so easily, but it could be done.

There was also the matter of the Essence of Steel. If one acquired a rare piece of equipment with really good uniques, they could convert that same equipment into a perfect by using the Essence of Steel. It was acquired doing a quest that Bahr himself hadn't found yet, but had heard about. All it required was slaying a mediocre mini boss, and boom. You had a super rare ingredient that could make your mediocre tools badass. He bent over and scooped up a lilly pad.

That was quite a bit of work to get worthwhile equipment, though. Bahr would much rather be slaying high level monsters or completing rewarding quests than squander his time away fighting a boring mini boss just so he could make mediocre equipment good. It made much more sense to just either craft perfect equipment or loot some and get it identified. The former allowed one to select the specific enhancements they were getting, while the latter gave them an opportunity to get something with unique enhancements that a blacksmith or tailor could not replicate.

He supposed there was probably some merit to the Essence of Steel quest, in that being capable of transforming potentially good equipment into actually good equipment was somewhat of a reward of its own. Who knows? Maybe he'd get a rare weapon identified and discover that it had two slots of Fallen, or two slots of Holy. Even though his current sword was a force to be reckoned with, it was foolish to believe that other equipment with better enhancements couldn't help him more.

As he rolled up on the next set of Swamp Lizards, they actually didn't seem to notice him at first. Which was odd, because he hadn't actually been quiet about making it over there. In fact, he had been a little louder than usual in the hopes that they would notice and come to him. With a sigh, he put his index finger and thumb to his lips and whistled loudly, which finally seemed to catch their attention.

They all sprinted toward Bahr in unison, readying their blade for an attack only to get sent flying backward when Bahr thwacked them with the Scarecrow's Sickle. Unlike the previous two sets of mobs, he had managed to get away with avoiding any and all damage this time. How fortunate for him! If he kept this up, he'd only need one more attack to destroy the lot of them and move on to the next batch.

As the Swamp Lizards rallied, Bahr let out an audible laugh. They looked so determined that it was almost cute. They stared into him with their beady crimson eyes, serious as could possibly be, seemingly no realizing they were staring death in the face. "You can look as confident as you want, but it's not going to change anything. You're all going to die here." The Swamp Lizards did not respond, except for all attacking in unison just as they had done before. Bahr chuckled to himself as he charged up his sword, ripping the blade through all four and causing all of them to simultaneously combust into clouds of triangular blue pixels.

The loot panel revealed that this haul had been a tad better than the others. He managed to acquire a perfect weapon and perfect armor all in the same go, from a single monster. The other mobs dropped mediocre loot, but even one perfect was better than nothing. Bahr smiled as he dismissed the panel, mentally tallying up all of the col he had acquired.

21168 col. If his mental math was right, that was how much he had acquired since the day began. And who knew what waited right around the corner? Something told Bahr that today was going to have a better haul than any of his last solo hunts combined. He was just sure of it.

For now, though, he needed to find the next group to hunt. He looked around, noting that he had managed to clear most of the swamp of its mobs by now. Over yonder, however, he saw one last group skulking about. He started toward them, knowing it would be a relatively long journey. He opened up his menu and absently thumbed through the various pages settling on his friends list. He scrolled through and tapped each name on the list, checking their map data to make sure they were still alive. One by one he made it through the list, and confirmed that each and every person that was listed was indeed still alive and kicking somewhere in Aincrad.

Then he reached the end of his list, where Zayne's name still sat. He stared at the name for several minutes, still walking all the while, his index finger hovering over the name hesitantly. Finally, he managed to bring himself to actually push it. His eyes widened and he audibly gasped when he saw the map data, stopping dead in his tracks. There it was, a tiny dot indicating where Zayne apparently stood, somewhere on the sixth floor. A few moments after the map was populated, it quickly cut out, offering a "No map data available" indicator.

What a cruel joke. It had to be a glitch of some sort. But for Cardinal to give him false hope like that, if even for a matter of seconds, was absolutely horrible. He angrily dismissed the windows and started walking toward the next group of mobs, this time his pace much brisker than it had been before. The false alarm had whipped Bahr into an absolute frenzy, tears streaming down his face as he pounded his boots through the standing water and muck.

He didn't waste any time with pleasantries or baiting tactics once he met with the group of mobs. He had only one objective, to slaughter them all where they stood before they even knew what was happening. He charged into the middle of the group, sword hot with energy, cutting into the lot of them with such blistering speed that the naked eye couldn't follow.

They all doubled back, squealing in agony as their health bars depleted into the yellow. One mob in particular got the worst of it, oozing pixelated blood from the fresh wound across its torso, grasping in futility at the wound in an attempt to stop it. How foolish. The only thing it should have been hoping for at this point was a quick and merciful death, one that Bahr was all too happy to provide. "You were made to die, get over it," he sneered.

Unlike the previous mobs Bahr had bumped into, these seemed frenzied and chaotic as a result of his actions. They all slipped and sloshed around as the scrambled to get to their feet, a couple of them dropping their weapons and searching frantically through the standing water in an attempt to find them. All the while, Bahr slowly walked toward them, sword raised, slowly building in power. He radiated a sinister and foreboding aura, the likes of which even the hardiest of mobs would certainly take seriously. 

When he was within range, he cut them all down, each and every last one of them bursting into clouds of blue triangular pixels which slowly fell into the water and dissipated entirely. A loot panel populated in front of Bahr, which he only took a cursory glance at before dismissing. He had gotten a few perfects out of that one and quite a bit of col, so it was a good haul, but he couldn't care less.
