[F12 - SP] <<Lord of the Seas>>

Recommended Posts

By now, the tears that had been streaming down his face had dried. Bahr simply stood in the middle of the swamp after the mobs had died, alone, not entirely sure what to do with himself. He didn't even feel like killing anything anymore. He just felt like dying. Well, a part of him still craved the violence. It was the only thing that took his head out of this emotional hell he constantly put himself through.

He retrieved a dungeon map from his pack, which luckily happened to be for this floor. His eyes perused the paper before folding it up and stashing it back into his inventory. He had heard that going into dungeons alone was a fool's errand, only carried out by those who either wanted a really good fight or had a death wish. Feeling a bit like both, Bahr figured now was the perfect time to use it. He slowly started walking toward the area that the map had designated, each step heavy and deliberate.

The final trudge through the swamp was as annoying and disgusting as the rest of the trip had been. Which was perfect. Bahr was infinitely irritated with everything that had been happening as of late, and attempting to maneuver through this swamp had been the ever-growing icing on the proverbial cake of rage. Given his frenetic and furious state of mind, you can only imagine how he felt when he approached the area that the map had led him to.

And there was nothing there.

After a few obscenities yelled and violent kicks delivered to the standing waters, Bahr was at a loss with what to do next. His unrepressed rage had to be expressed one way or another, and now there was nothing that he could do about it. He simply gave up and let all of his limbs go limp, falling backward into the water. What he hadn't expected, however, was to fall through the water and into the hidden cavern below.

He fell for longer than he would have liked, grasping at the air in futility as he plummeted into the pond of mucky goop that had formed under the cavity in the swamp, where the water and waste drained into a singular area. His head burst forth from the water and he swam to the nearest shore he could find, a pair of torches igniting there to reveal a cave-like impression that led further into the underground cavern.

As Bahr wandered into the cave, torches on the side of the walls reacted to his presence and flared to life, cascading a tangerine light across the walls and floor of the corridor. After around a hundred paces or so, he came upon a larger chamber that had a pair of mobs in it. They were Swamp Lizards, much like the mobs he had been fighting above, but they seemed beefier and more refined. A glance at the title accompanying their cursors revealed them to be Greater Swamp Lizards.

"Perfect."

Bahr quickly unsheathed his blade and charged it up all in a singular motion, dashing forward at a breakneck pace and closing in on the mobs in a flash. These creatures were quicker to react than their counterparts on the surface, both taking a swing with their curved swords the moment Bahr was in range. He narrowly slipped between the attacks, carving a slash across both of their chests and forcing them back.

The Greater Swamp Lizards were none too happy about having had their pride challenged by some lowly surface dweller. Contrary to their weaker counterparts above, they didn't so much as flinch when caught by Bahr's blade. Instead the sneered and readied their weapons for a counterattack, which came much faster than Bahr had been expecting. It appeared they had less stun time after having been hit successfully.

They swung their swords in unison, cleaving through the air toward Bahr was he was forced to take evasive measures. He managed to dodge one of the attacks outright, but the other was positioned for where he had moved to and he was forced to catch it with his own sword. Knowing that getting stuck in swordlock would leave him vulnerable to the other of the two reptiles, he grinded his blade along that of the lizard's and pierced into his chest with its sharp point.

By the time he had slide his blade into one of the lizards, the other was already swinging at him once again. He was forced to take the blade out of the first and slash at the other, managed to slice into it just in time to divert its attack to the side, missing Bahr entirely. He kicked the lizard he had just struck away as it began to bleed, not having enough time to contend with a slash from the other lizard, which struck him on the arm and forced him to jump back.

The intensity of the fight had been a lot more than Bahr had bargained for, but he was honestly having the time of his life. Within only a few seconds, he had ducked and weaved through attacks, blocked a few, scored some hits and taken hits from his opponents. It had all happened so fast and with such fluidity that he couldn't help but get pumped about it.

Bahr didn't have much time to sit around and get his energy back. Within seconds, they charged back in once more, coordinating their attacks much like they had been. Bahr dashed forward and slid right under one of the lizard's attacks, slashing at its feet as he slid by and causing it to combust into a cloud of triangular blue pixels instantly. As he scrambled to his feet, the second one was upon him, attempting to jam the pointy end of its sword into Bahr. With a little keen footwork and a swipe of his sword to deflect the incoming attack, Bahr was able to avoid receiving any damage this time around.

With one down and only one to go, Bahr felt pretty confident in his ability to end this little quarrel quickly, despite the fact that he energy had dipped into dangerous levels. Using those Area of Effect moves and missing one lizard or the other had definitely taken their toll, but Bahr didn't have anything to worry about. This last one was hanging by a mere thread.

He eyed the lizard as he began charging up his sword once more, bending slightly at the knees and charging forth, piercing the illuminated blade directly into the heart of the Greater Swamp Lizard and causing it to combust into a cloud of blue fractal polygons. Even though they hit harder and were relatively more difficult to take out than those on the surface, they hadn't posed much more threat than any other standard mob he had faced. Certainly, they weren't as daunting as the Sea Wyvern he had faced earlier in the day, even if it was two versus one.

He dismissed the loot panel and sheathed his weapon, walking toward the exit of the chamber; another corridor on the side adjacent to where he had walked in. Torches continued to react to his presence as he made his was down the hall, silently illuminating the corridors and lighting the way.

Though he still had plenty of gas left in the tank, the frenetic fervor he had been feeling before was starting to wane. It seemed that the pent of anger he had been holding back had finally nearly run its course after pouring his rage into the hordes of enemies he had slaughtered to get here.

But was it really accurate to describe it as pure rage? In reality, it was a myriad of emotions. Perhaps it was simply easy for Bahr to filter everything he was feeling through the lens of anger, pouring the converted energy into nameless beasts that didn't know otherwise. It was probably unhealthy to do things this way. In fact, Bahr, knew it was unhealthy to do things this way. But what other choice did he have?

It wasn't like he could vent to his friends about the things he was feeling. Alec was great, but he just didn't have that sort of relationship with him. Kit and Kirbs had their own things going on and he needed to be a rock for them. In the end, even knowing he had friends, he felt totally and utterly alone.

What a bizarre realization. He had spent several years alone in the Town of Beginnings, only getting social interaction at the church when helping with the kids or with random odds and ends around town. But he had never really felt alone then. There was a sense of community and belonging. Ever since he had left, obligations had started piling on.

And this sword. This damn sword. It was messing with his mind. Yes, he was certain of it. It offered him immense power, and he wouldn't be as strong as he was without it. But at what cost? He felt the desire to fight gnawing at him like a nicotine addiction, filling in every knook and cranny of his mind like the low buzz of florescent lighting. Ever present, but in the background, possible to tune out for a short while but seemingly roaring when it had your focus.

It would be nice to sit around and feel sorry for himself all day, but he didn't have the luxury. As he rounded one of the corners in the cavern, a pair of Greater Swamp Lizards descended upon him before he even had the chance to draw his weapon. He managed to narrowly avoid the first attack, seeing his reflection in the blade the creature held as it whizzed past his face only centimeters away in slow motion. When the second one lashed out, Bahr grabbed it by the wrist to halt the attack, unsheathing his blade and charging it before bringing it forward into the creature's gut in one swift motion. After he was sure he had dealt enough damage, he kicked the lizard away from him and assumed his usual fighting stance.

It had been a surprise, but somehow Bahr had managed to make it away without any damage. That being said, in the heat of the moment he had accidentally activated an Area of Effect Sword Art and failed to deploy it properly. Not a huge mistake, but costly for his energy nonetheless.

Just like the set before them, these lizards were a relentless and rowdy bunch. There was hardly any time between shoving them off and having them close the distance all over again, hacking and slashing with the tenacity of mother bear protecting her cubs. Bahr nimbly evaded one of the attacks while deflecting the other with his sword, retaliating with Calamity Disaster in an attempt to chop them into smithereens.

The attack didn't exactly go as planned. One got caught in the blade and had its health reduced to the same as the one he had hit before, but the other managed to jump back and avoid the damage just in time. Once again, he had squandered a high-energy Area of Effect move on only one target, reducing his energy to half its usual capacity. If things kept going this way, it wouldn't be good.

Even though the Area of Effect Sword Arts were rapidly draining him out, he couldn't afford to stop using them now. He charged up his sword once more, letting out a war cry as he dashed forward and ripped his blade into both of the Greater Swamp Lizards. Miraculously, he had actually managed to hit both this time, knocking them both onto their backs and filling him with glee.

They were swift to retaliate, though. One got on all fours and placed the sword in its teeth, an attack pattern Bahr had never witnessed from one of its species before. It skittered along the floor with jarring speed toward Bahr, swiping at his feet and forcing him to jump. Once in the air, he found himself face to face with the other reptile, who had already positioned itself to meet him there. When it slashed at him, he didn't have the leverage to dodge, and was instead forced to catch the blade with his sword and kick off of the lizard to get distance.

Now was his opportunity. The one that was crawling along the floor had more HP and was the bigger threat. The other had Bleed inflicted and he could afford to ignore it for at least one attack due to its weakened state. As Bahr neared the ground, he saw that the grounded lizard was skittering toward him from below, waiting to attack the moment his feet touched the ground. He charged up his blade and sliced into the creature seven times in rapid succession before it had a chance to lash out at him, and the creature combusted into a cloud of blue polygonal fractals instantly.

That just left the last Lizard, which seemed to have survived the last of its Bleed status effect. It dashed toward Bahr, but he evaded the attack easily as the creature clumsily stumbled forward. Without its partner to back it up, it was nearly as formidable.

With a gleam in his eye, Bahr charged up his sword for the final attack, bending slightly at the knee and rocketing toward the last Greater Swamp Lizard and striking it directly in the heart. It shrieked as it burst into a puff of triangular blue pixels, which cascaded from the point of combustion and slowly dissipated. A loot panel populated in front of Bahr, and he dismissed it after a moment of examination. The drop hadn't particularly been good - nothing more than a rare trinket and some col.

He cast a gaze down the corridor. He had been quite rudely interrupted by the pair of reptiles, so it meant that there was probably something good up ahead. Sets of mobs like this in dungeons usually only happened in the chambers. If they were skulking around the hallways, it stood to reason that they were probably protecting something.

Or, you know, maybe there was nothing of interest in this dungeon at all. Maybe there was nothing but stinky damp hallways and mobs that were good enough to have a fun time against, but ultimately stood no chance. Maybe it was a colossal waste of time.

Still, it had been Bahr's idea to seek this place out, and he was going to have to live and deal with whatever consequences came of it. It was still better than the swamp, with less standing water to trudge through and a better smell, even if it was still smelly. Down here, though, it was more of a mildew smell, as opposed to the offensive waste-like odor of the swamp above.

It reminded him of some of the caves he had found and traversed as a child, actually. They all had that same mildew smell, but he didn't mind because he was getting off on the thrill of exploration.

Bahr probably could have been looking around every nook and cranny for whatever crafting materials were lying around, but he was disinterested in that at this point. He had collected enough materials throughout the day, and it wasn't like he didn't have plenty of materials back at the shop to work with. Speaking of which, he had been neglecting the shop recently. He really needed to update the merchandise out front and get back to making more. He hadn't so much as made a tunic in several days.

Then again, where was the motivation to do so? He hardly had any customers. He had made a piece of armor for Kit that one time, and he sent something to Kirbs at a drastically low price. Then he gave away an entire set of armor to a fresh noob. Perhaps he wasn't making the smartest business decisions, and his shop seemed to be failing as a result. Still, he felt that it would be better to give things away for free than watch his hard work go to waste and never see the light of day.

And there was something to be said about paying it forward, too. Bahr had been fortunate enough to run into Macradon on one of the higher floors, who saved his keister and provided him with an immaculate blade to boot. Though, the blade was a tainted heirloom of sorts, originally owned by the Berserker of Aincrad. He was supposedly a bloodthirsty menace, and had to be put down by the frontliners lest he terrorize the citizens of this floating hell any longer.

Ever since Bahr had started using the blade, he had noticed himself becoming more bloodthirsty, as well. He could contain it for the time being, but for how long? And was it even the blade that was creating this problem for him? Who was to say it wasn't simply an issue with Bahr himself? Some deep seated propensity to indulge in and seek out violence, using it as an outlet for his frenzied emotions and gradually becoming addicted to it. It could be that it was all Bahr, and that the sword was just a convenient excuse.

After quite a bit of walking, Bahr found what he assumed to be the final chamber. Standing within it was a single mob - a lizard that stood taller than any of the rest that he had fought that day. It was adorned in armor and carried a Katana instead of a Curved Sword, and looked generally more muscular than Bahr's previous encounters. It assumed a battle stance, gripping the hilt of its sword with both webby hands and raising the blade to head level with the blade pointed up. It was clear that no words were needed.

Bahr dashed forward with blinding speed, a gust of air following him as he slashed into the creature with all of his might. To his surprise, the Elite Swamp Lizard didn't react whatsoever, instantly retaliating with a slice of its own. Bahr immediately dashed back after the damage had been delivered, his eyes flickering to his health bar. To his surprise, it seemed that this thing was capable of dishing out more damage than Bahr himself.

How exciting! A mob that could give him a dynamic fight as well as a run for his money. This was the sort of thing that Bahr loved. The fights before had been interesting, but only because it was multiple enemies at once. Here Bahr had an opportunity to fight a mob that seemed to be on par with him in terms of power and skill. It would be a fight he would be sure to remember.

He dashed forward once more, yelling out as he charged his blade again, the signature Sword Art whistle ringing through the air. He went it for a slash, but it was a feint. He quickly switch the orientation of the attack and managed to land a critical blow against the lizard, pixelated blood oozing from the fresh cavity the attack created. But once again, the lizard was unflinching, instantly retaliating with an attack of its own and slicing into Bahr without a second thought.

Glancing at the Elite Swamp Lizard's health bar, Bahr could see that the monster had dipped into the yellow. A quick glance at his own health bar revealed the same. It was impressive that this creature was capable of going blow for blow against Bahr without losing focus whatsoever. It still had the same stance as before; knees slightly bent, sword raised to height level and parallel against the ground with the blade pointed up. Bahr's prayers for a worthwhile opponent had been answered.

He dashed forward once more, slashing at the reptile but finding his blade caught against that of his adversary's this time around. It seemed that, while it ignored damage dealt against it, it wasn't a fan of simply taking hits over and over again. They struggled against each other for a moment, both trying to gain the upper hand, but to no avail. After a few moments they both jumped back simultaneously, putting a bit of distance between each other.
