And technically everyone started at the Town of Beginnings so...here he was...At this point in the game everyone knew of Zakariah and his starter quests...God, starter quests...Masa-no, Koga couldn't believe he'd been in the game for this long and was only now starting the beginner quests...if only Tsuki-Koga shook the thought from his head. He needed to get his [censored] together. He needed to start working on getting out of here. He had to catch up to the Elite Teams. And boy was that one hell of level gap.... "Ah, so you're new to Sword Art Online are you? Well, let me show you some tricks to help you survive." Zakariah said as Koga approached. Koga rolled his eyes at the "new to SAO" bit. She had to start somewhere, and since she has never exactly played any kind of game before, this was going to be golden for her. But there was still the fact that she didn't know what she was going to do if asked to actually do something. She kind of hoped that a detailed guide was going to be given to her, because that would be a wonderful thing to her. She had been told where to go to find Zakariah and the starter quests that he had. This was going to be a good start to keep her from being too bored. From feeling like she isn't doing anything to help, because let's face it, she hadn't been helping at all. Just as she walked to Zakariah, someone else had as well. Apparently, this guy had the same thought that she had. She looked at Zakariah though when the NPC spoke and she shook her head. "I really hope these will help me survive." She looked at the other guy, he was possibly around her age, it was hard for her to judge anymore, since she wasn't sure that the avatars aged with them. But either way, they might as well do the quests together right? "Fancy a party member for these?" Here she was, a social recluse attempting to talk to someone and possibly become party members. Koga turned around to look at whoever was speaking. It was a brunette haired girl, still wearing the starter gear, just like he was. "Honestly, anything we can get will help." the man shrugged. It wasn't like this gear was gonna do them any good up on the higher floors, but it was going to take some serious grinding to get even halfway there. From what Koga had heard, the Assault Teams had an easy 50 or 60 levels on them. "Fancy a party member for these?" she asked of him. Again, Koga shrugged, "Eh, why not. Ain't gonna say no to some company. The name's Koga." the man said, gesturing with his hand and sending the party invite to...Noctua, he read from the party invite prompt. He did have a point, right now, any little bit would help. It was more just attempting to get her courage out of whatever hole it decided to run away to. That was the hard part currently. But that wasn't going to stop her. She didn't even want to think of how the Assault Teams were. Those numbers were probably going to scare her right now into not wanting to do this. But at the same time, perhaps it would boost her confidence in gaming? She was happy though when he answered her question with not only a sure, but a party invite. That was going to save her the minor trouble of having to figure that out. The Accept button came up and she quickly clicked it. He had said that his name was Koga, but she wondered why that sounded so interesting. Either way, she focused back on him then and smiled. "I'm Noctua," wait, didn't the party list show that? In fact it did and this made her blush a little bit. "I am so horrible at this. I apologize now. I haven't played anything like this at all before, and well, what a way to start." And this was when she waited for the party to be quickly disbanded. It was bound to happen, who would have the patience to party with someone who has literally never played an MMORPG beofre. But, not really wanting to give him the chance, she looked back at Zakariah. "I'm Noctua," the girl replied, suddenly blushing a little. She must not have known that the Form Party prompts showed the other usernames...oh...well crap. Now here's something you gotta understand about Koga. He is always for helping others, and showing them the ropes. However, he also really, really likes it when people can pull their own weight...and since Koga was trying to get to the frontlines as fast as possible, this might put a slight obstacle in his path. But then again parties weren't permanent. And besides, maybe she had played other MMOs and just solo'd like he usually did. Certainly everything would turn out okay. "I haven't played anything like this at all before..." Cue the sound of shattering glass. Koga put on his best smile, eyes blinking rapidly. It wouldn't take much for someone to see through his thinly veiled disguise. "N-never?" he asked before shaking his head. This was fine. Whatever, he didn't mind teaching a newbie the ropes...but...if something happened to her because something he told her was wrong? Thankfully the boy's thoughts were cut off by Noctua's voice, "Since you're the party lead, you have to start the quest for us right?" Well, at least she knew that much. "Right, sorry," Koga apologized before hitting the accept button on the quest prompt. a plain white box with the quest title and objectives appeared before both the players while Zakariah spoke, "Alrighty then! I need you to go fetch me crafting materials, please. About five will do. Doesn't matter what they are, just any five crafting materials. And hurry back!" Sure enough, the objective for the quest read, 'Go fetch five (5) Tier one materials and give them to Zakariah.' Koga groaned as his head fell forward. "I hate fetch quests..." he mumbled. She was frantically trying to find a way to salvage all of this. She really didn't want to just be thrown to the wolves, literally, only to die. Most people would say this, but she wasn't ready to be permanently dead. She still had things to figure out in the real life. But it was getting back that she was determined to do. But there was utter silence after she admitted that she hasn't played a game like this before. It was true, and she was truly worried that she was about to be dropped. But it was the rapid eye blinking that had her sighing lightly as she shook her head. "Never. It's kind of a long story." A story that she wasn't about to get into with someone who might drop her from the party at any given moment. But her reminder of him grabbing the quest seemed to jog him back to the present. At least he was accepting the quest. She really didn't want to be the thing that slows someone down, and she had a feeling that she was about to do just that. She looked at Zakariah and she wondered what it was that he was even talking about. Crafting materials? You could do that in the game? If so, that was something that she was going to look into. She missed cooking, and she figured that learning something to help when she goes up in levels would be nice to. Perhaps there was someone out there who cou- wait, fetch quest? "Fetch quest?" She had to voice that one aloud. She looked at Koga, with confusion in her eyes. But behind that was the determination that she wanted to show. The determination to be able to do whatever it took to not have to worry about dying on a daily basis just from walking outside. But wait, shouldn't that fear still stay there? "Okay, so crafting materials. Where would one normally find those laying around?" Determined to not look like she was going to be dead weight, she was going to start trying to show that she wanted to learn and to help. Why did it have to be a fetch quest? They were awful! It was literally just a list of chores. Start at point A, go to point B, don't die! Get item C, return to point A. Oh yeah, don't die again. Profit? If there was one thing Koga thought that the gaming world could go without, it was fetch quests...and underwater missions...and escort missions...although by the looks of it, this may become an unplanned escort mission too...well, hopefully Noctua was entertaining by the very least. Koga let out an exacerbated sigh, not at Noctua's question, although it could be misconstrued that way, but rather the quest itself. "So," Koga began, "a fetch quest is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Go get item, come back, turn over item, get a shamefully small amount of col and exp. Pretty lame, but right now, I need every bit of experience points I can get my hands on." The man turned around and shoved his hands into the pockets of his coat as he started to walk towards the town's exit, "On the point of crafting materials. My best guess is to start walking north towards the forests. Hopefully we'll find stuff on the way, but I'd be willing to bet we'll find things in the forest itself too." Koga honestly had no clue where any of the crafting material drops were in this game. Logically though, it made sense...hopefully it wouldn't take them forever to find it. She really hoped that it was just because of the quest that they were being sent on. Though that wasn't going to stop her from thinking that she was bugging him. Because frankly, that was probably the issue right now. She was a complete and total new person to this, and she is probably going to be loathed by many others. She held back a sigh as Koga started to explain things. He seemed to be agitated enough by her own question, she didn't need to sigh on top of that. She pulled her mind out of the self pity that it seemed to be creating and she nodded when he explained fetch quests. "Okay, that seems simple enough. Dumb, but simple." She was curious as to why he was so determined to get all of the experience that he could, but just asking that aloud would be stupid. She knew the answer, it was more than likely the same as her own. Just so that she can feel like she is able to help. So that was probably a question that could just be ignored completely as she went over things in her mind. "Okay, so we go and find things. That doesn't sound horrible, just really slow and pointless." But there was one thing that did cross her mind, the monsters. "What are the odds of us having to battle? I'm ready to learn, I just also don't want you to feel like you have to carry me or anything." She was probably starting to over think things at this point. In fact, that was basically guaranteed. But she meant what she said, and the stubborn yet determined look in her eyes would even prove that she meant it. Koga opened his inventory as they walked, reequipping his weapon, the curved sword when glowing into existence at his side. "Well, honestly, there's no good answer to that question. We could run into mobs along the way, that wouldn't surprise me. If this were a more specific quest than just 'find five random materials' I'd say that we would definitely find some guarding the materials, but I don't see that happening." the man shrugged as they entered the plains of grass that surrounded the Town of Beginnings and began to follow the northward trail towards the forests. "I guess we'll just have to wait and see if we run into anything. If we do, they'll probably be so low level we won't have to really worry about getting too hurt. I can give you some pointers if it comes to that." he offered. Even though they were still near the town, Koga's eyes wandered back and forth across the trail and lo and behold, there was an ingot there. Who woulda thunk it? Koga couldn't help but start laughing. "No way," he said as he went to go pick up the item. The man tossed it into the air, and caught it as it fell back down before it disappeared into his inventory. "Well, that's one down." They both wanted the experience after all. She ignored the NPCs though as they walked through the town. She wasn't in the mood to buy anything, but she still liked how they tried to make things seem normal. Of course, for the NPCs it was normal. But she looked at Koga as he chuckled. Was that a good thing? She was certain that it was, but it also brought up the question on if she was being laughed at , or if he was laughing at her. She wasn't going to ask though, and instead, just walked out of town with him. The moment that they left the safe zone of the town, she paused for a moment to equip her rapier. She looked at Koga to see that he had a curved sword. So, they both decided to go dps, that meant things were going to be easy to kill right? Eh, probably best to not think on that, and just focus on finding the materials that they needed. "Okay," she nodded for a moment, "Thank you, for agreeing to stay in a party with me. I know this isn't going to be easy." She looked around for a moment before she started to follow him into the grassy plains. At least it wasn't a horrible day out for this quest. She watched as he found one of the materials that they needed and she smiled. "Awesome! Now I just hope that my luck is as good." She was starting to hate this quest the more she searched the trails and grass. After a few minutes, something shiny caught her attention and when she picked it up, it was an ingot of her own. She smiled and held back a cheer of excitement. They hadn't run into anything yet, she wasn't about to catch the attention of anything that might be lurking around them. "So, that leaves us both with just needing to find four more. This doesn't seem like it will be too horrible after all." She smiled lightly and looked at the Rapier. "It was the only thing that seemed to appeal to me when I was able to choose." She watched the area around her as she looked for materials. But his response to her thanks for being in the party wasn't the one she was really expecting. She honestly thought that it was just going to be a simple "it's just for now" response. Instead, it was one that made her feel better about even deciding to do any of this. "Company is always good. I'm slowly relearning this." In fact, this is the first time she's had a true long conversation or even human interaction in years. She was barely starting to talk to others back in the real world. But nothing dawned on her until after she grabbed her ingot that a monster could have jumped out at her. Well, that would have sucked wouldn't it. I keep forgetting that games can hate the player." As soon as Noctua had finished her thought, the tall grass to the right of the trail began to rustle. Koga stopped dead in his tracks and put an arm out in-front of Noctua, narrowing his eyes as he watched the spot. A boar, furry and ugly walked into the middle of the trail and stopped. The beast turned and looked at the two players, kicking up dirt with it's front hoof as it snarled at them. Koga let out a relieved sigh and let his arm fall to his side. Just a boar. Easy enough right? "Well Noctua, nows a good time to start learning how to fight." Koga said as he unsheathed his blade, giving it a quick spin as he started to walk towards the beast. "So, first things first. Sword Arts. If you're gonna do any meaningful damage, you gotta know how to use them. Form and timing is everything. Prepare your strike," as Koga spoke, he got into a fighting stance and began to raise his weapon above his head. As he did so, the blade began to glow a deep crimson. "And then, once you feel the Sword Art activate..." the man quickly dashed forward, stepping to the side of the boar, bringing the long curved blade into a cleaving arc against the boar. The beast flew backwards with a squeal and rolled a few feet before getting back onto its feet and turning towards Koga. "You drive it home, give it everything you got." A look of confusion was on her face, until she was the boar. She would being lying if she said that she wasn't scared, because, right at this moment, she was freaked. She didn't know what to do, and well, she didn't want to die either. But she also didn't want to be the reason that Koga died. Dilemmas. Her focus trained on Koga as he told her how to use Sword Arts. This was a useful bit of information, that much was for sure to her. She watched him as he used his sword art and even did a lot of damage to the boar. Thinking that it was easy enough, she tried to mimic him, but the moment that she saw the boar moving, she attacked too early. She hadn't given the sword art time to officially prime, and so when she went to hit the boar, she missed. Thankfully, she didn't miss horribly, but it was still a miss. So much so that the boar seemed to ignore her as it stared right at Koga. But as the boar went to attack Koga, it missed the player, allowing for a sigh of relief to leave Noctua's lips. So far so good. Until it wasn't...The boar shuffled as it stared down Koga, and the man could see the girl flinch and panic, sending the Sword Art out too early. The violet glowing blade dimmed into nothing, only narrowly passing over its thick hide. It was the boar's turn now, and boy, he was still angry at Koga. He huffed and puffed and if there were a houze, he'd try to blow it over, even if he was one of the three little piggies. The boar squealed angrily before charging at Koga, but the boy, still on his toes stepped the side and span out of the way, swing his blade as he did so. The virtual metal singed through the air cleanly as it too narrowly missed its target. Koga wound up right beside Noctua as the boar skidded to a stop, finally realizing it had missed its target. When he dodge the blow and stood next to her, she nodded lightly. At least he wasn't mad at her for missing or moving too soon. She watched the boar though and took a moment to decide what it was that she wanted to do. He had a point, she didn't have the energy to use her sword art again, but she could just do a basic. Right now, the boar's health was low, so she could kill it with one blow, if she manged to get it to hit that it. So, she took a deep breath and ran at the boar, attempting to just hit it. But her rapier glanced off the boar doing no damage once more. This was starting to make her feel like she couldn't do anything at all. Spinning around to be able to watch the boar, her face was starting to show some of the defeat that she was feeling. Perhaps she should just stay in town and wait for the assault teams to finish the floors. Watching the boar, it's attention was still on Koga, this still worried her, but once again, the boar missed. Well, at least that is going over for us well enough. Her weapon struck, but only a glancing blow. The boar's hewlth was already in the red. So Koga wasn't too worried about them losing to it. It hadn't even managed to hit them once so far. The board still had its sights set on Koga, and it charged once more. This time Koga waited until it was just about to strike him before using his weapon to block it's tusks, and he used its momentum to reirect it to the side. As the boar we by, Koga delivered another slash to its hind leg, draining more of its HP. The man backed off now and looked over to Noctua, "Alright, he's within one hit now. I'm gonna sit back and let you handle this, unless you really need help. You got this." Koga was certsin of their victory at this point. She knew that she needed to relax and not over think things, but that was hard with her first fight after all. In fact, she was so far in her mind, that she hadn't even noticed that Koga brought the boar down to a one hit death as well as dodged yet another attack. She nearly jumped out of her virtual skin though when he spoke but she nodded. He was going to leave the boar to her? Wasn't that a little reckless of him? She didn't get much of a choice, for the moment that the boar noticed that Koga was by her, the boar was gearing up, ready to hit him. She didn't want to give him the chance, and instead, rushed the boar and slashed it once with her rapier. She watched as the last of the boar's health disappeared, and she smiled for a moment. The tip of her rapier shot forward, piercing the animal's thick hide. The board let out another cry as it burst into a cloud of red fragments. "Hey, look at that! Ya killed it! Nice job, how does it feel to have scored your first kill in Aincrad?" Koga said as the combat ended and the screen to Noctua's combat rewards appeared. She was smiling with pride, even as Koga approached and raised his hand for a high-five, "Get any good loot or materials?" the man asked, peering at the screen like theittle nosy bastard he was. "Well, now that that's over and d oh ne with, how do you feel? Wanna keep looking for items, or call it a day and finish up the quest tomorrow?" She returned the motion and looked at him. "To be honest, I'm still shaking, but it felt good." She laughed a little before she looked over the loot once more. "No materials, but I did get an Unidentified T1 Rare Weapon and an Unidentified T1 Uncommon Consumable." She read over the item for a moment before she sighed. "Guess I have to take them to a Merchant to have the identified. Oh well, that can wait." Truth be told, now that she has finally killed a monster and actually seen first hand that they could be killed, she was less scared than she had been before. The question of continuing their quest now or going back to town came up and she looked at Koga, closing her inventory menu finally. "If you're up for it, I say we continue hunting right now." It wasn't that she wanted away from him so to say, but she wanted this dreaded quest over. It seemed to be taking too long already in her opinion. "The way I am looking at this quest, the sooner we finish it, the sooner we can take on another one. And hopefully not another fetch quest."
