[SP - F4] <<The Essence of Steel>> [COMPLETE]

Recommended Posts

Takao mumbled quietly to himself as he read the floating prompt in front of him. Only small bits and pieces of his ramblings were coherent, said only to emphasis in an effort to try and remember the more important details. "Beast skull... struck with a bone... cave... hm." He sniffed and glanced up at the large expanse of wintery forest that lay before him. A plume of white smoke escaped with his breath as he exhaled, which triggered him to grasp the fur collar of his cloak and pull it closer to his neck. The bitter wind that ripped through the frozen wasteland that was floor Four wasn't unusual, at least not that he'd found, yet it was still very unsettling. The fabric of his cloak was battered aside by the wind as he walked, yet the weather didn't seem to impede his forward motion in the slightest. "Equal in strength to a floor boss, huh...?" He quietly muttered to himself as his green eyes narrowed, briefly focusing on shapes and silhouettes that came and went on his way through the winter storm. Takao dismissed the menu and refocused on the task at hand, locating the skull that the Information Brokers had been spreading rumours about.

"If I can't take this thing down, there's no way I'll be ready for the front lines. Good as any other time to test myself, I guess." His words were replaced with thoughts as his boots trudged through the powdery snow that covered the forest floor. At some point that he couldn't even remember, he'd reached for his sword and drawn it, not so much in paranoia as preparation.

It had taken much longer to locate the skull than he had been anticipating, but by the time he had finally found it the wind began to die down. He mused that the setting before him was very cinematic. The forest had lead out into a clearing, with the western side of the glade blocked off by a massive sheer cliff with the slightest hints of a cave opening hidden behind icy rocks. The flat expanse was about fifty feet around without a single obstruction, with the exception of the stone pedestal that held a large beast's skull upon it. Resting against the pedestal was an equally large bone, perhaps taken from the same creature. Takao stepped up to the stone plinth and bent down slightly to grab the bone with his left hand. He looked it over briefly, then glanced to the sheer cliff where the monster would be emerging from.

"Alright..." He closed his eyes and exhaled an unsteady breath in an attempt to calm himself. When he reopened them, a look of determination and confidence had taken over the unsettled, perhaps even slightly afraid expression that they once held, and a grin grew on his face. He raised his left arm and slammed the bone down onto the skull, then quickly tossed it aside and moved away from the pillar just as the ground beneath him began to shake and tremble.

"Let's do this."

The sound of the hollow skull rang out upon being struck with the bone. It cut through the forest's delicate quiet, but as the ringing died down, silence once again overtook the clearing - if only for a minute. A heavy, loud thud came from the direction of the cave. The ground beneath his feet shook and trembled from the force, yet he held steadfast. Another thud came shortly after, shaking the ground again. Then a third, and then a fourth, and then silence. Nothing. The only sounds he could hear were his shallow breathing and his beating heart.

From nowhere, an unexpected roar came from within the depths of the hidden cave. It sounded like some ridiculous mix between an elephant's roar and some other sound that came from a beast that Takao couldn't even begin to imagine a face for. The icy stone that encased the cave shattered under the beast's force, sending shards of ice in every direction and kicking up a considerable amount of snowy debris. Takao raised his hands in front of his face to shield it from the force, as well as from the smaller shards of frozen water and stone that battered him.

When the snow settled, a massive beast stood at the entrance of the cave. It was at least twice his size, perhaps even thrice, the size was difficult to judge even with a point of reference. It was on all fours, though its gorilla-like stance lead him to believe that it could switch between bipedal and quadrupedal postures. It roared again, the ear splitting sound staggered Takao who winced and grimaced at the shrill sound. His examination of the monster continued as it took a few cautious steps forward. It was almost completely covered in fur, the hands, feet, and face being the only exceptions. A large growth on its face, which Takao presumed to be some kind of nose, would likely have ruined the possibility to perceive stereoscopic imagery for any normal beast - but this was a monster in a game. His earlier smile shifted to a grin, one filled with both confidence and sheer terror.

His foot slid slightly and pushed the snow he stood in aside as his blade raised and his body lowered into a combat ready stance. "Alright you glorified Yeti," Takao mocked, giving the sword in his hand a slight twirl. The monster suddenly took off in a charge, massive arms and legs pounded against the ground and sent tremors through the frozen soil that threatened to throw him off balance, had he not been rooted to the ground. "Just a game... Not real..." "Let's dance."

The Snow Beast swung first. Its massive arm sailed over Takao, who ducked and rolled through the snow just barely an inch from the gigantic arm that threatened to crush him. He recovered from the tumble with ease and swung his blade at the exposed underside of the monster, cutting deep through the fur and flesh to leave a large orange stripe of a wound. Just as his blade left the monster and he prepared himself to dodge, the monster swung its other hand at him. The back of the hairless fist slammed into Takao and threw him across the field. He landed twenty meters away and rolled across the ground, grunting and gasping out a breath as he came to a stop, face down in the snow.

Takao heaved out a cough from his lungs and slowly climbed up to his feet. The rumbling on the ground was a great motivator to hasten his recovery, and by the time he was back on his feet, the Snow Beast swung again. The scene was a near perfect replica of what had just occurred only a moment ago. Takao dove and tucked his body into a roll. His right shoulder hit the ground first, and the rest of his body tumbled along with it, until his legs swung around and he was back on his feet in a single swift motion. He swung his blade forward, and it bit into the exposed underside, tearing away fur and flesh alike as it cleaved through another chunk of health. It was less damage this time, not that Takao could observe the drop in its health gauge given his position underneath the monster. He didn't have to spend very much time under the beast, however, as the scene had replicated itself in its entirety. The monster swung at him with a clenched, Takao-sized fixed that slammed into his chest. He was sent tumbling across the snow again, his body hitting and rolling against the ground after having not been afforded the same air time he had been with the last hit.

He tried to catch himself but lost his footing again, rolling onto his back and through the snow another few feet before finally regaining his balance. He glanced at the monster's health bar, and then to his own, and felt that single rusty gear that was the analytical part of his mind starting to turn. "Alright... That's about the most damage it can muster. I can take ten more hits like that, eleven if I count my health crystal and maybe more if Battle Healing kicks in." His thoughts moved faster in his head than time did in reality as he analyzed the situation. "It has just over ten hits of my lowest damage left in it... Just over eight at my most. Alright man, stay calm. All you've gotta do is dodge it at least twice, then you've got a safety net."

"Just two dodges..." His voice echoed his thoughts as green eyes met glowing red orbs. The monster's face was contorted and twisted into a terrifying scowl, its soulless eyes telegraphing its sole desire in this world; to kill him. Despite the monster's size and impressive strength, as well as its ability to partially phase through his armour's mitigation property, Takao was the one that had the advantage between the two of them. The monster had pre-programmed fatigue that would eventually set in, and although that value was undoubtedly high for a boss-tier monster, it was still finite. Takao's endurance was similarly numerical, but he had human will-power to keep him going. While the gigantic Snow Beast's relentless charging at him and swinging of its massive arms was definitely intimidating, Takao could see how much movement was wasted, and how inefficient it was at attacking. The monster could learn patterns and adapt to Takao's fighting style over time, of that he had no doubts, but he couldn't imagine it ever learning that it was wasting its energy - not by the time one of the two of them was dead.

The monster swung down at him with both fists, yet missed when Takao tensed his legs and performed a single hand spring to put just enough distance between himself and the attack to be safe. The Snow Beast began to recover, but not before Takao had moved around to its body. He raised his sword and poised it just right to active the «Pre-Motion» of a sword skill. When he let the system take over, it started with a diagonal slash from the monster's top right to its bottom middle. Just as the blade was about to leave the monster and hit the ground, his wrist was readjusted, and the slash continued from the monster's bottom middle back up to its top right. The trajectory of the cut was altered ever so slightly, so that the two hits had formed a V shaped wound in the monster.

Takao couldn't afford to give the monster in front of him any opportunity to strike back before inflicting more damage, so just as his blade left the Snow Beast's body he pivoted on his foot and whipped the blade back around. He didn't have the time to perform another sword skill, especially after only just coming out of the previous move's «Post-Motion». He cut a horizontal line through the previous two wounds and launched himself into a dive and out of the monster's reach, just as a massive arm swept past where he'd just been standing. Takao's shoulder hit the ground first as he tucked into a tumble, then he rolled onto his back, and then his feet moved back underneath him and returned his balance. He immediately but considerable distance between himself and the monster as a bead of simulated sweat formed on his forehead. "That's two," His eyes set onto the monster's health gauge as it turned toward him and resumed its menacing, red-eyed glare. "Seven hits at the least, eight at most. I still have ten in me."

Despite how quickly his thoughts moved, the monster afforded him barely any time to plot out his next move. The monster had begun charging and by the time he blinked it was already upon him, sending a massive fist straight for him. It was faster than its size let on, but Takao's reaction time seemed more than capable of keeping up with its massive movements. It helped that the Snow Beast could not have telegraphed its movements any clearer, which presented Takao with enough of an opportunity to predict and react accordingly. It swung low at him, its hand sweeping across the snow and throwing the powder into the air to create something of a frosty cloud. Takao had already started moving by the time its arm swiped at him, and had dodged just in time. He prepared a sword skill's pre-motion and delegated control to the system. It took over, and with the augmentation of his own movements, allowed him to strike the monster fast and hard. His blade had only just left the Snow Beast's body when its large hand grabbed Takao and threw him at the ground. He bounced in a way that would've looked incredibly painful to onlookers, any of which he severely doubted had remained in the area after hearing the beast's angry cries and howls. He grunted and groaned as he staggered back up to his feet, just in time to see the monster already charging at him again. "Ugh... C'mon, Battle Healing. Don't leave me hangin' like this!"

Something about this entire situation felt odd to Takao. The monster before him was massive, several times his size in fact, and incredibly fast despite its bulk. It possessed strength of such a caliber that when it hit, it inflicted a higher minimum of damage regardless of his armour's mitigation property, yet it had only scored large hits on him so far. Its roars were ear splitting and downright terrifying, he could imagine the sound was traveling far throughout the forest, and yet he wasn't afraid. This situation should've terrified him, it should terrify anybody in their right mind - which had gotten him thinking. Was he even in his "right mind" anymore? Much of his personality remained unchanged despite the events that had transpired over the course of the past few months, yet some things had definitely changed as well, and his mind began to wander around the thoughts of how it would influence him once he got out of the game.

Once he got out of the game... oh, right. He still had a fight to finish. He snapped out of his thoughts and returned to the only reality he had known for the past few months. The ground shook with each movement the monster made, especially as it charged toward Takao. He glanced to the health bars that hovered by its head and noted how the top-most bar was the lowest, and had been nearly drained. From what information he had gathered, it was common for monsters with multiple health gauges to change their attack patterns once one or more had been drained, so he began to prepare himself for a completely new battle.

The monster charged again and was upon him in an instant. He evaded the massive hand by moving closer within the monster's range after entering a stance to active the <<Pre-motion>> of a sword skill. With his control released and delegated to the system, his glowing blade found its way to the monster, and heaved away another chunk of its health, effectively dropping it to the half-way point.

A constant stream of calculations ran through Takao's head as he dodged the Snow Beast that slamming and swiped at the ground he'd just been standing on, throwing powdery snow in every direction to create a large cloud. He could only see the silhouette of the monster through the settling snow, though it didn't seem to know where he was either. He had a moment of respite that he could enjoy, regardless of how brief it would be. Although he could only make a rough estimate based on his earlier observations, Takao was confident the monster didn't have more than six hits worth of health left. If the monster would stop scoring critical hits on him each time it managed to successfully attack him, he had at least double that left. The brunet didn't dare to attack the monster when he couldn't see it, and he instead opted to wait for it to charge again. It seemed he was most successful with that strategy.

The monster had pulled its arm back to swing for the... well, by this point Takao had lost count. The monster's two health gauges had been reduced to one, and while its attack patterns changed, Takao didn't have any problems with adapting to the new methods that the Snow Beast employed in its endeavours to kill him. He had left his sword skill's post-motion rigidness before it could succeed in hitting his mostly frozen body, and had already prepared another sword skill. Fighting in such a manner while "flying solo" was definitely risky, but it was a necessary risk. He needed to see his limits before him, not just what he perceived to be his limits. Yet even so, the monster before him didn't seem to be exceeding his capabilities. The brunet carved away another chunk of health with a simple sword skill before being forced to wait out the post-motion, and then narrowly evaded the monster's arm that came crashing down upon him immediately afterward.

Another successful sword skill guided his blade through the monster, first from left to right in a horizontal swing and then in a reversed motion from right to left. The sword skill brought him far enough away from the monster that wavered and staggered back from its simulated pain. Its glowing red eyes stared menacingly at him, yet he felt no intimidation anymore. Perhaps he'd grown overconfident with his success so far, but not a semblance of doubt or ill-thoughts toward his own safety resided in his head. Instead, they were replaced with vague thoughts of his next move, planning how to evade if the monster approached from one side or the other, and reading its movements carefully. The rigidness of his sword skill's <<Post-motion>> wore off, and he quickly took off to running to one side in order to evade the monster's massive fist that came crashing down on the snow where he'd been standing.

The hulking beast before him was difficult for him to describe with words. The more he looked at it, the more surreal it seemed to be, especially as it charged for him. He'd seen gorillas in animal sanctuaries and zoos before, and if asked he would've closely related its running animation to be very similar to that, but it seemed to be physics-based movements instead of linear animations. He took in little details about the monster even as he fought it, part of his observational habits that often distracted him during dire times. It didn't seem to distract him too much this time, however, as his focus was rather intently focused on the massive snow beast that removed the thirty meters distance he'd put between them in a matter of seconds. Takao evaded with ease, immediately prepared a sword skill, and unleashed it upon the monster in a few swift motions.

Takao prepared a sword skill and swung his blade toward the monster, though he proved to be too slow. By the time he'd finished the <<Pre-motion>>, the beast had already descended upon him, threatening to crush him between the two large fists that it had sent toward the ground. He canceled the sword skill and opted out of the attack in favour of dodging, saving himself from the damage that it would've inflicted had he stayed on course with his previous action. The fists came crashing down and emitted a thunderous bang as they threw the powder snow into the air. Takao slid to a stop and watched the snow slowly settle back down onto the ground. His gaze shifted and eyebrows furrowed, now staring intently at the snow beast.

"I almost kinda wish I could show the guys back home the stuff I've been doing in here." Takao's thoughts wandered while his body preoccupied itself with dodging and evasion. Thankfully, he thought, the monster was telegraphing its movements clear enough for him to have very little issue with dodging it now that he understood the patterns. His recent understanding also afforded him plenty of opportunities to strike immediately after dodging, such as the opportunity that he'd presented for himself after the monster's fists struck the ground with impressive force. Snow was thrown into the air like a geyser, and by the time it had begun to settle, the <<Pre-motion>> of Takao's sword skill was done and ready. He released control to the system and allowed it to carry out the attack, his sword carved away another orange wound and taking a nice chunk of health with it by the time the blade had stopped glowing.

The rigidness that came from his previous sword skill faded quickly, which afforded him just enough time to evade the monster's retaliation. He watched the health gauge drop, then shifted his gaze from the meter to the charging monster. There were no visible numbers he could read to calculate exactly how much damage he inflicted to the monster with each hit, but through paying attention to how far the bar dropped after each hit alone, he was able to determine that the monster had exactly two hits worth of health left. Takao, on the other hand, could afford to make plenty of mistakes that he knew he just wouldn't make. After evading the monster, he prepared another sword skill and unleashed the system's wrath upon its white fur and leathery flesh, and left a massive glowing wound in his blade's wake. Unfortunately, he hadn't accounted for the snow beast to enter some kind of primal rage, and it swung its fist at him much faster than he'd been expecting. The post-motion only gave him enough time to raise his sword to put something of substance between his body and the fist, although the damage was dealt regardless. He was thrown against the ground and tumbled through the snow before eventually coming to a stop, a low groan pushed out of his lungs as he worked on standing up mere seconds later.

This was it, the last hit he needed to land to kill the beast. Its roars and bellows of anger threatened to burst his digital ear drums, yet he stayed on course. The sword skill he had prepared sank his blade deep into the monster, tearing a massive wound from the center of its stomach up across his left shoulder. By the time his blade left the monster, its health had already dropped to zero. It froze in place, an expression of simulated pain mixed with shock stuck on its face until the large monster shattered into hundreds of colourful data fragments. With the beast defeated and a menu shoved in his face to inform him of his spoils, Takao slowly sank down onto the ground and heaved out a well earned sigh of exhaustion.

"Phew..." Takao exhaled another lengthy sigh as he wobbled back up onto his feet. He wiped his forehead, the action being purely habitual and much less practical since his avatar didn't actually produce sweat, and raised his sword up toward his back. He aligned the blade with the scabbard and slid it into the casing, then set his gaze on the crevasse that the monster had burst through. By the time he left the instance, it would be reset to how it was before the fight, and the monster would be back to fight whoever dared to challenge it.

"Glad that's done with. Now, where'd Otoko run off to..?" Takao glanced around the snowy wasteland, looking for a ball of reddish scales that would definitely stick out from the white landscape, but saw nothing. He shrugged slightly and began to retrace his steps, back in the direction that he knew the town to be, and where he would most likely find his familiar that he had told not to interfere with the fight. He had worked way too hard to tame the little bugger for him to want to risk losing him. "Well, he couldn't have gotten far."

"Oh, there you are!" Takao exclaimed as he noticed a small scaled animal scurrying through the half-foot deep snow. He bent down to kneel and picked the monster up, and stared at its miserable looking face. He chuckled and raised him up to his shoulders and let the monster settle on top of the fluffy collar of his cloak, surely warming itself on the clothing that had been specifically crafted to be warm. "You shouldn't go runnin' off on your own, y'know. There's stuff out here that would probably eat you if it got the chance."

Having been reunited with his familiar a short time after defeating the strongest beast Takao had yet to face, the brunet and his reptilian companion returned to the town of Snowfrost. He passed by a familiar blacksmith shop sitting on the outskirts and contemplated a visit, but he found himself much too tired, and instead opted to simply returning to a floor with a warmer climate. The third floor would do nicely, he thought, especially with his shop being located there. He could make both himself and his familiar something to eat and take a rest before embarking on his next adventure.
