  1. As if to answer her concerns, a young man Flanna had not seen before approached her and asked her just what she needed to hear. She turned towards him, and was a bit surprised to see just how short the man was, but thought it best not to comment on that out loud. Besides, stats were what made a strong player in SAO, not physical brawn.   "Oh, yes!" she eagerly responded, and gave the other player a quick bow of her head and a friendly smile. "Well, sort of, uh, yeah, I guess starting out is the, um, proper term for it, I think," she quite rapidly stammered. She didn't completely consider herself a newbie, but she most certainly was in terms of her experience with the world. And her stats. And her equipment. Alright, maybe she was a newbie.

She took a deep breath to calm herself, then more clearly added, "Yeah, I'm just starting out. I've been meaning to for a while now, but uh, well, the whole 'death' thing has been keeping me too nervous about it. So, um, if you're free, I wouldn't turn down a bit of help." Now that she'd calmed her nerves a bit, she took a closer look at the young man who'd walked up to her. She noticed something... Peculiar. "Uh, pardon me for asking, but what is that thing?" she asked, in reference to the small dragon-like creature with him. She hadn't seen anyone else wandering around the Town of Beginnings with anything like it, so the sight of it caught her a bit off guard.

  2. It was about time that Flanna got off her butt and started doing something. Though she hadn't exactly intended to, she'd stayed around the starting area, the first town on the first floor, for far too long. "I can just start making progress tomorrow," she'd tell herself about every day, though in truth, it was just an excuse to stave off the risk of death that every encounter in SAO had. It seemed so out of character for her, to hole up in a safe place rather than go out into the world that thousands of others were fighting in. Of course, if it had been a regular video game, Flanna had little doubt she'd be right up at the front lines, fearlessly charging into boss battles and raiding dungeons. And dying a lot in the process. But she couldn't exactly do that here. So, what now? Flanna glanced around the mostly empty tavern she was sitting in. There was one other player in the room, who seemed to be going through their menus, as well as the bartender NPC. How exciting.

With a roll of her eyes, Flanna stood up in her seat and barged out the door, back into the streets of the first town. The common sight of different players bustling around at least helped Flanna know she wasn't the only person to stick around in the area's safety, though that didn't ease her guilt terribly well. All these people were slackers. She was too, but it was about time that changed. The mobs just outside of the town had to be easy enough, right? Her equipment wasn't terribly impressive, but she had a good feeling it was enough to get the job done. The young woman made her way through the bustling crowds of the town, her eyes darting back and forth between its many stone structures and unfamiliar faces until she eventually reached the edge of the area.

She hesitantly looked out into the open, green fields of the first floor and found herself stuck in place. As much as she wanted to, as much as she knew she should, she just couldn't bring herself to leave the safe zone. Now that she thought about it, she'd come to this same position several times before: determined to set foot in the dangerous parts of the world yet too daunted by the risk of death. This was even the exact same spot she'd stood in on multiple occasions, trying and failing to push herself to start grinding up the levels and quests and make her way toward the front lines. Could she even catch up to the strongest players at this point? Flanna sighed, and her gaze dropped down to her feet. Maybe she could do it if she had someone else to help. That usually helped bolster her work ethic in the real world: having someone to compete with. Were there any players nearby who would be willing to help? Flanna lifted her gaze and began to glance around the area, searching for anyone who looked like they would be willing to party up.

    Username: Flanna
    Real name: Margaret "Meg" Addison
    Age: 19
    Gender: Female
    Height: 5'4"/162.5 cm

    History/Personality

Margaret didn't have any sort of significant life before she entered the world of Aincrad. She had three brothers, all older, and two parents who loved all four of them very much. They lived in a fairly small apartment in a large city, and their parents' jobs were quite lucrative, so Margaret and her siblings were always surrounded by the latest technology while growing up. This helped contribute to her love of video games, and her rowdy brothers caused her to develop a rather tomboyish and competitive nature that got her in trouble at school more often than she'd have liked. Margaret would find herself expelled from two schools for getting into fights with other students before she was even thirteen years old, though eventually settled down and stopped being quite as feisty after nearly getting kicked out of the third one too.

In her free time, Margaret tended to play a lot of video games. Usually against her brothers, who, since they were all older, tended to be more skilled and beat her almost every time. Every defeat only fueled her desire to get better, though, and she would spend many sleepless nights grinding away at various games to improve her skills. Eventually, her skill level shot past that of her brothers and she was able to trounce them in nearly every game they played. Her brothers no longer an adequate test of her skill, Margaret started playing online games, and got very into several different MMOs up till SAO was announced.

At that point, Margaret had moved away from home and started attending college by herself. While it was difficult for her to adjust to being away from her family for the first time in her life, she got by, and landed a part-time job as a waitress to start saving up for a NerveGear set and a copy of SAO. As soon as she'd saved up enough, she dumped practically all of her money into nabbing herself a NerveGear and managed to be one of the lucky few who received a copy of SAO. Unfortunately, after getting back home and messaging around with her online friends, she found that she was the only one of them who'd been able to get a copy. While it bummed her out that none of her friends could enjoy the game alongside her until the next wave of copies was released, she figured she may as well enjoy it for herself, and eagerly logged in under the username "Flanna".

    Virtues

Hard-Working: Flanna is a hard worker down to the bone, and she's not unwilling to do tedious tasks in order to reach the desired goal. While this doesn't mean she won't complain about something if it's monotonous or boring, she's able to see the bigger picture and power through the work. It's not just boring work, either: Flanna is probably more willing than most to enter a dangerous situation and try to handle it, even at risk to her own life.

Observant: Flanna boasts a keen and watchful eye, and is quick to pick up on things at a glance. It comes in handy in all sorts of situations, such as being able to more easily tell when someone is lying to her, or properly reading and reacting to an opponent's attack.  She attributes this skill to many years of playing different fighting games and learning to spot tells on different attacks, though in truth she's likely just perceptive by nature.

Competitive: A true competitor at heart, Flanna hates to get anything less than first place. As one of her brothers put it, "Second place is just the first loser." She follows these words very closely, and while some may see it as a flaw, it is mostly what drives her to work so hard all the time and never settle for anything less than her absolute best effort. Of course, when lives are at stake, she can set this mentality aside and do the right thing, but for the most part, she is always pushing herself and her "competitors" to be their best selves and go for the gold.

    Flaws

Inconsiderate: With her competitive nature comes the downside that Flanna is not always the most considerate of other people's conditions. She has a hard time understanding when someone isn't able to do something, and gets angry easily if somebody is underperforming, which makes her a bit difficult to work with at times. Other people's feelings also aren't usually of her concern, so she tends to offend people or rile them up without necessarily intending to.

Sore Loser: Flanna most enjoys the glory when it's on her, and doesn't really appreciate it when someone else steals the spotlight out from under her. Winning is the only option for her most of the time, so when that isn't the result it can be hard for her to accept it with grace. While the specifics of to what degree she loses her cool are a bit unclear, there's a reason she's been permabanned from League of Legends four times.

Distrusting: It's not that Flanna has a hard time trusting new people, but more that when push comes to shove, she's unsure of exactly how dependent others can be. She very much believes in the philosophy of "if you want something done right, do it yourself", so she may end up biting off more than she can chew. Alternatively, she also doesn't always give others the chance they deserve to prove themselves or complete a task, since she has a hard time putting faith in their abilities.
