Xian was getting frustrated already - this was not good. He might need a break to just stare at the sky at some point - maybe very soon. He sighed, going towards a nearby tree. This tree was a little bit thicker, so instead of using one hand, he grabbed the thick tree with both of his arms - wrapped both of them around the tree and started shaking as hard as he could. Unfortunately, the tree did not drop any apples for him, despite the fact that it was thicker and probably a lot tougher to shake. Xian sat down once again, this time in frustration. It was then that he recognized that maybe there was a strategy to this material gathering. Perhaps that is the reason that he is having no luck at this material gathering thing - after all, one makes his own luck, and that is what he plans to do.

Xian switched a tree and attempted to shake it in order to see if there were apples on this tree. This tree, however, was just the same - there were no apples that fell from the tree either. Xian sighed. He knew that material gathering was hard, but shaking each tree took a long time. He did expect this, however. The game was meant to be a grinding type game, and this was what grinding meant - mindless torture and hours and hours of doing the same task. Xian sat down besides the tree and pulled out bread from his inventory before eating it slowly - tasteless, unfavorable - it would be nice if food had taste. Unfortunately for him, they did not. Xian stood up again, and looked around. It seemed that some of the apple trees had more apples than others - they must have already been taken by a lot of other players doing the same thing.

Once again, Xian attempted to shake the same tree for some apples, and just like before, nothing came out. It was to be expected, of course, since why would different things happen when he attempts to shake the same tree. This was, after all, just a video game. A video game had its own series of coding, and this coding determines what happens whenever action takes place. The same action... the same action will always result in the same result. That is just how the game goes. Xian sighed, already beginning to understand how people become bored of material gathering and grinding for this game all the time. Even though it is very close to reality, as seen through the ability to actually touch things in this game, it was overall still just a video game, no matter how you looked at it. It was extraordinary - a game that seemed like life.

Xian exited the safe zone and began looking for some materials in the first floor wilderness. The truth is, he wanted to avoid meeting any mobs and monsters, because he was too low-leveled to fight anything. This was actually only his third time exiting the safe zone, so it was especially unnerving for him. Nevertheless, he must exit in order to satisfy the conditions for the completion of this quest, and hence he will one-hundred percent make himself go out of the safe zone. After all, he was that type of man. A few minutes - ten approximately - into the wilderness, and he realized that he had stumbled across a very big apple patch. He smiled... here might be where he finds materials all by himself - the first step into this game, basically. He reached the nearest apple tree, and shook the tree as hard as he could, only for no apples to fall out.

  5. Xian had heard about these tutorial quests for newer players, and he was interested in getting these done to help with his leveling. He needed to grind up as much as he can, and that was why he ended up going to this shop first thing in the morning. He soon meets this man named "Zackariah", who was apparently a very friendly blacksmith who helped newer players get started by providing them with a quest that taught them material gathering, an important part of the game - as materials are practically currency. Xian walked in and accepted the quest, and soon enough he was sent to the wilderness of the first floors to gather five materials. Materials can be hard to gather for new players without any boosts, but he hoped that this would be different, because apparently while doing this quest, it would be easier to complete material gathering. Xian smiled, he had been spending a lot of time on the second floor.

  6. It was just at this moment that he realized that there was some sort of animal right next to the white-haired woman. He was delighted when after explaining the katana as a weapon and giving him a general background, that she decided that she might loan him one of her old katanas. "Oh? The katana skill is different than other weapon skills? How so?" Xian asked, curiosity striking him. Apparently, the Katana was not the 'best' weapon, but obtaining the skill for it is a different process than the other skills. There must be a reason for this randomness? Xian shook his head, it wasn't his position to question the game developer - Kayaba. After all, he could kill everyone in here with a few clicks of a finger if he really wanted to. The fact that he even is allowing everyone to live right now could be seen as mercy.

"And sure, I would really appreciate a temporary katana to use while I'm getting used to everything. At the moment, all I have is this starter curved sword, and I don't think I'm going to be using it very much." Xian explained, opening his inventory and pulling it out. The blade was of a generic white color, but the hilt was customized. It was emerald green, and there was a pig made right at the intersection between the hilt and the actual blade it self. "Haven't actually tested this thing out. Maybe I'll get a chance to use it before I switch to a katana. Who knows?" Xian finished.

Xian nodded when the man exclaimed that it was a pleasure to meet him - generic greeting... Xian thought nothing of it. He watched as the muscular man walked up to the boulder to inspect the stone. Xian wondered what he was doing, but then reasoned that he was probably looking for a spot to strike before going at it. Xian waited patiently, although he was starting to grow impatient. Time was of the essence - if he was going to catch up to the front lines, it was essential for him to not waste a single second. However, he waited this time, as a weak point in the rock can definitely speed up the process drastically. To his disappointment, it seemed that Zuekin was unable to find anything useful. The man walked back, and began to answer Xian's questions that he had asked before. So... he quit, huh? Xian thought to himself. Of course, Xian was unaware of the circumstances that revolved around the forsaken of the quest, but he hates quitting, and he dislikes quitters - hopefully this man isn't like that.

Zuekin was about to strike when the old man came out and applied some sort of face paint on him. Zuekin then asked him how he looked, to which Xian glanced at his face, holding in a laugh, answered, "Just the same as before." He smiled and allowed the old man to apply paint to his face as well. Now, it was his turn to charge at the rock. He swallowed, getting into a charging stance that he had seen some of the other players do, before running towards the giant boulder and jumping in the air. Unfortunately, it seemed that his martial arts skill in real life does not correlate with this game, as he flopped to the ground, unable to complete the maneuver. "Oof," Xian exclaimed, "that didn't work too well." and that was when a pop up notification occurred that read: sword art not unlocked. "Sword art, huh?" Xian read, "Must have accidentally tried to activate something."

  8. "Xian." He replied simply, indifferent as the pop-up menu came across his vision. This was only the second time that he had seen this item pop up, and the first time that he had, things did not turn out well. Xian furrowed his brows, and slowly clicked on the accept button. This was it - perhaps this was the thing that will finally warm him up to this virtual prison. Joining a party might not seem like that big of a deal... but it was the first time that he had done anything since that incident.

Xian then received an item from the black-haired man - a potion of sorts. It was of a dark, red color, and the container was plain and simple. He inspected the item, and the game seemed to tell him exactly what it was: a sharp dragon-fang potion. Xian watched the man down the same item, and decided that it was not poison or anything before consuming his own. The man then started to walk, with the purpose of talking to some sage. Of course, Xian did not know how this worked, so he simply followed Zuekin. He didn't feel anything different from drinking that potion, so he felt curious about exactly what it did, "What exactly did that potion do?" Xian asked, out of nowhere before they arrived at the sage's house.

Xian listened to the short conversation between the Sage and Zuekin. As soon as the conversation ended, it seemed that the quest had started. "So, you've done this before?" Xian asked, responding to a comment that Zuekin had made during the conversation. He watched as the man took position in front of the boulder, as if he was going to just punch the rock. To Xian, it seemed like it would hurt, but there were no pain in this game. "Go ahead." Xian suggested, cocking his head towards the boulder.

Xian has been spending a lot of time here on the second floor. It wasn't a particularly interesting floor, but he heard that one of the quests here gave out martial arts as a skill. This peaked his curiosity enough that it led him to spend more time here as compared to the first floor. There were also a lot of mobs that spawn in the forests of this floor, and he knew that this might provide him with a good opportunity to finally grind up some levels. It was a long way to the front lines, but through effort and enough dedication, he is sure that he will make it up there someday. After all, he was a prodigy back in real life, so there was no reason to think otherwise in this game. Xian walked out of the tavern that he had spent the night in only to be blinded by a ray of radiating sunlight. "Good day." He observed, heading to the wilderness, completely oblivious of the NPCs behind him who were talking about some boss monster that has been terrorizing low-leveled players in the wilderness.

He walked through the gates of the safe zone, taking his step out into the wilderness of what... his third time now? He hasn't been out here that much - he didn't dare venture too far out. Today, however, he was feeling a certain courage that directed him further away from the safe zone than usual. It was then that he spotted a white-haired lady looking rather bored with a katana - a weapon that he had wanted to obtain. "Good morning, may I enquire as to how you obtained your katana? I've been looking around in the shops of this floor, but no one seems to be selling any of those." He said, walking up to the woman unthreateningly.

"Amazing..." Xian uttered to himself, admiring the legendary rock. It was gigantic - he was like an ant compared to the size of this thing. It only reminded him of how he was only an ant in this world of powerful players. Xian had a late start, but he had finally gotten the courage to leave the safe zone and take a peek at what is outside. To his astonishment and pleasure, he was able to find the rock that he had heard so much about. Apparently, breaking this rock granted the quest taker with the ability to use martial arts - something that he had proficiency with in real life. It would be fun to do something like that again. Still, breaking this thing was another story. As a level one player, Xian could barely even kill a fly, let alone break this rock with his bare hands. If Xian was going to break this rock, he would have to spend a long time going at it, if it was even possible for someone of his low level to complete this quest. Still, Xian is a stubborn man, and without much thinking, decided that this would be the task for the day.

It was then that he heard a voice from his left. He turned slowly, not his whole body, just his head so he could make eye contact with this newcomer with his cold, brown eyes. This man was of a completely different weight class. He was buff, and obviously goes to the gym a lot. The man seems like he doesn't do a lot of cardio - one of those guys who hogs the weight machine or the bench press at the gym. Xian has fought a lot of people of this size over the past, but this video game was a whole different story. Xian smiled a half-smile, "Of course, why else would I be here? This is probably going to take a long time though... do you have anything that can help us with this?" Xian asked, shifting his attention back to the boulder.

    PROFILE

    Username: Xian
    Real name: Fang Wen

    Age: 23
    Gender: Male
    Height: 6'0"

    History

Born into a very modest family with middle-class income, Fang was raised up with two very strict parents with high expectations for him in the United States. As the only child of two individuals who were so close to a prosperous career, but fell short at the last moment, he was expected to reach success to compensate for the failures of his parents. Hence, he was raised with a very strict schedule, and very strict punishments as well - spanking, beating, yelling, you can name it all. It was not abuse, however, as his parents really loved him, and just wanted the best for him. He was taught to be nice and caring, which he learned to be, but did not understand as he could not see the caring aspect in his parents' methods. Nevertheless, since this was the way he was always raised, he eventually became used to it, and just like his parents wanted him to do, he excelled in everything that he did. That's right, he reached a black belt in three different types of martial arts, was top three in his class for most of his life, performed at many prosperous musical stages with his expertise in the violin. Yes, he was the perfect child, and this was why people were so scared of him.

    He had no friends.

He had no friends up until his first year in Harvard, when his parents no longer had the influence they used to have on him. Now, he was more of his own independent self. He kept doing martial arts, because he enjoyed it, quit the violin because he has hated it since childhood, and started working out more and more. Some people began talking to him, and he made a few friends, and eventually, he graduated from Harvard with a degree in political science, getting ready to go to law school to become a prosecutor, and that was when one of his friends convinced him to buy Sword Art Online with him.

"Dude, you are going to carry so hard with your martial art stuff. You are literally going to rule this game... give me all the money, please."

That was what he said, and then black... and when he opened his eyes - his world had changed forever.

    Virtues

Loyal - Xian will never leave someone he cares about to die, for he will always stay with them until the very end, even if he has to meet his own end as a result of it. It is impossible to get Xian to betray the ones who are close to him, and the fact that someone tries to do so would put them on his bad side. He is generally a very good friend or partner to have by by the side, as he will stay loyal no matter what, fighting his hardest for those around him.

Brave - A true fighter since a very young age, Xian has the guts to go at anything. Having been fighting and doing martial arts at a young age, he has become desensitized to a lot of things in this world - this includes the use of weapons against animals, the use of fist against humans... etc. It is very fair to find something that Xian fears. Having been born a fighter, he always will remain a fighter, and being someone like that requires him to be extremely fearless in tough situations.

Calm - A martial art prodigy... he is able to remain calm in the toughest situations, even when the odds are definitely against him. As a child, he had to fight people older and stronger than him, but he would always win using not only his instincts as a fighter, but his ability to remain calm and access the situation in the intense situations. This is something that he has practiced all his life, and this is something that he will continue to excel in, even in this game that seems like it would last for eternity.

    Flaws

Low EQ - Xian is never able to tell how someone feels, maybe because he isn't very human himself. He can never truly access the emotions of another human being, and hence he is unsure of how to act sometimes. As a result, he can sometimes portray an image of being almost robotic, but deep inside, he is just as warm and friendly as everyone else.

Strict - Xian expects the best out of both him and his companions. Being friends with him will mean harsh words, as he tries to get everyone around him to become better and tougher. Having grown up in a strict Asian family, he has inherited some of the teaching traits that were used on him as a child, and now it becomes very easy for him to start yelling at someone even though he is not angry with them.

Perfectionist - Xian is always standing up as straight as he can. He will never be late to anything - actually, he will probably always be at least thirty minutes early to things. However, this also means he expects other people to do the same. Hence, he become impatient with other people.
