  1. Hidden away from Fox's gaze, Mao flashed a smile. Was that her upper limit for being teased? He wasn't totally sure, but he was glad that she was at least speaking something more than a greeting. Fox was a tough cookie, but surely she had to have a weak-point in her armor. Another one, anyway, since Mao had a pretty good inkling on the first was, but it was one he wasn't willing to exploit. Nothing seemed to be spawning within his vicinity so he decided to take a mini-'break' himself. He walked up to Fox with a serious, neutral face.

"Okay. If that's what you think." Mao took a second to raise three fingers and held it out ahead of himself close to his chest. "If yokai can see my heart and desires, tell me: does the yokai know what three things I''m feelings towards you right now?" Mao could feel his chest tighten up into an enfeebling knot.

    [So brave.

    So outrageous.

This is so dumb, and I hate you.]

  2. Mao was about to speak but managed to catch himself as Fox had made her way back into their vicinity. "Kon," he replied back.

Mao scooched a little closer toward Vince. "Keep an eye out? Why's that?" he whispered. Mao was genuinely curious. Did Vince notice something strange about Fox apart from what Mao'd already seen? She'd seemed nice enough albeit distant. Very distant. Mao looked up at Fox who seemed to be taking a break under the shade of a tree.

    [Truly the face of evil.

    I don't see it.

    She's wearing a mask.]

Mao let his imagination run wild with different scenarios knowing full well that it was all in good fun...or was it? "My god, it all makes sense now. How could I have been so blind?", he said. Of course, this didn't actually mean anything at all. Meanwhile, a piece of loot popped up nearby. Mao reached out a foot and gave it a little love tap.

  3. "You gotta step up your game," Mao said as he watched someone swipe yet another mat from Vince. He lightly jogged toward one of his own. "Or else-". Mao was cut off by another thief snatching his loot. The thief smirked, gave him a mini-salute, and ran off.

[Maybe we should start PK'ing people.

Maybe we should find another spot.

Maybe we should become a thief.

    Don't even joke about becoming a PK'er.]

Mao sighed. If only loot was shared, it would've made the quest much easier and, y'know, promote cooperation. But instead here they were, stealing scraps from each other. Is this what Kayaba wanted, to sow discourse? Mao relocated himself to an area nearby and did the same with his mind.

"I'd say a little of column A, a little of column B." Mao passed on mentioning why and he hoped that it'd either go under the radar or that Vince just wouldn't care.

  4. Mao watched as Vince used some sly tactics to nab a mat, and he couldn't help but be impressed at how naturally it came to him. He also couldn't help but be nervous at how naturally it came to him.

"Simple, real simple. Just gotta climb up 100 floors, one at a time." Mao didn't know how difficult the game actually was, but he hoped that Kayaba wasn't sadistic enough to trap them in here, enable actual death, _and_ make it Dark Souls-difficult. No sir, that'd be crossing the line. Mao took note of Fox slowly drifting away from their little group. Seeing that there was absolutely no loot around at the moment, his Col dinged down to 1999 as he pulled out a coin from his inventory. With a nice, high flip, the coin landed tails up.

"The safer option, huh? For now, I guess I'll leave 'er be," Mao muttered under his breath. He palmed the coin and felt it lowly melt away into nothingness. Ding! 2000 Col.

  5. "It's pretty hard to get through this as fast as possible when we're, y'know being gated by luck." Which wouldn't normally be an issue if it were simply a game, but Mao couldn't help but imagine how much of this he could actually take considering that it might just actually be his life now. He made a low, quiet, and fried hum as he pondered the thought.

"All the way to the top, huh?" Mao, having dropped into the game at the last second, was unsure of his own goals. Obviously, there were the ultimate goals of beating and surviving the game, and obviously he had to get stronger. But those were, or should've been, everyone's goals. He joined this game because he wanted to fight, but would he be able to stand strong and control his anxiety in perilous, or would it consume him and put not only himself but his future teammates in danger? Unfortunately it was impossible to know right now. He could always sit back and settle into a profession, but he wasn't sure if he'd be able to live soundly knowing that other people might be dying to get everyone else out.

Mao rattled his head, shaking out the shards of anxiety that'd infiltrated his thoughts. He'd also noticed that his breathing had grown heavier and that his heart had quickened. He slowly relaxed himself.

"As for me," Mao said before giving himself a moment, "I just hope I can join you guys at the top, my aliveness permitting."

[Is that even is a word? Welp, it doesn't really matter, I guess.]

  6. Mao wasn't sure how to read Vince either, but he seemed friendly enough at least. He had barely managed to stifle a laugh as Vince dove for a mat only to end up with nothing; karma would be sure to punish Mao to be sure.

"Kaliot. Or Kali. Or Mao. Whichever's easier for you. Nice to meet you!" Mao gave Vince a casual salute, and with him around, Mao figured he could maybe lighten the mood and learn a thing or two in the process. "And this is my acquaintance, Fox!" He gestured towards her. "Feel free to join us," Mao told Vince before going back to his search.

If Fox wasn't already annoyed with him, she'd surely be now. He wanted to test her and get a handle on her annoyance threshold so he knew where he could skirt though that information would be useless if he drove her off with his dumb antics. In the meantime, he managed to snag another drop.

  7. [Bullies, huh.

    Who is this guy?

    But the dog, though.]

"At the risk of soundin' lame, someone having a 'tender side' doesn't make them weak and and it doesn't get them bullied. Being the target of some cunts does that." Mao wasn't sure what exactly Fox'd been through so he made sure to distance the subject away from her and to talk with a somewhat distant tone. Though Mao never experienced being on the receiving end of such people, he held disdain for them. Of course, some of them were victims themselves, but it didn't give them the right to entrap others. "That's just my two cents, anyway."

A quest material popped up right in between Mao and a green-haired guy next to him whose focus was in the opposite direction. Mao stealthily made his way toward it, nabbed it up with a quick swipe, and began his search again as if nothing happened.

"So, how's your luck faring?" he asked the green-haired fellow.

  9. [This area is pretty cool.

Will shops on this floor even have anything good?

Best to grab some magic-find now rather than later.]

Mao was scouring the city, taking the time after his first quest to map out the shops and find something that'd help his rolls. He happened upon a relatively quiet part of town, and taking a turn into a shady alley, he found himself standing under in front of a shop under a ray of sunlight.

    [The Evening Star]

He couldn't help but wonder, given the location and the aesthetic, how much the place costed. Mao gently open the door to the shop; the bells on the door invited him in and, for just a moment, he forgot about the crazy but possible reality that everyone was in. Mao let out a sigh, perhaps of relief or perhaps of wonder, but most probably it was somewhere inbetween. He let the door close behind him, the bells letting out a final chime before silence overtook the shop. Descending the steps, he noticed the vacant counter.

"Hello," Mao said to nobody in particular, his voice faintly echoing throughout the shop. The sign on the door said that shop was open so surely someone was around. He glanced around briefly before locking onto NIGHT, seated comfortably and relaxing at a table beside the steps; her demeanor seemed to clearly reflect itself onto her store and he was entranced.

    [I guess that's the shopkeeper.

    Sh...right. Okay.

Quit your ogling, you moron. We're on a mission.]

"Oh, hi!" Mao said with a smile. He gave her a quick wave-salute followed by a slight bow before darting his eyes over to her wares on display. He tapped on a few on them to check their stats before finally finding what he was looking for. "Perfect! Just what I needed." Without a second thought, he tapped [Purchase] and watched as 500 Col emptied out of his account. Satisfied, he turned toward the exit and gave NIGHT a quick wave and a "Thanks!" before heading out.

  10. Ah yes, Mao's little outburst truncated whatever he was saying at an interesting spot: pretty ambiguous but enough there to bait her into finish the thought however she wished, or at least be curious enough to ask. Now if only he'd done it on purpose. Mao took a mental note and filed it away in a little miscellaneous manila folder.

"Oh, I was just going to say that you're confidence is...admirable? Commendable? Those sound kinda condescending, huh." Mao paused for a moment to think. "Maybe...relaxing? Honestly, I'm sure anything I put there will sound weird, but I'm already in too deep so that's the best I got." He left out the bit that mentioned that Fox sounded pretty reliable despite her age figuring that the message already sounded condescending enough.

Mao didn't seem to be having much luck in his area so he moved somewhere else. "Anyway, test you out, huh?" Again, he took a moment, this time wondering what a safe question would be. "Hmm, do you have any pets, Fox?"

  11. "That's true, though I had no intention of finding out the hard way in either case". If everyone was really trapped, then it'd really be in everyone's best interest to work towards beating the game in some capacity, but the thought of that was honestly unfortunate and unsettling. Hell, if too many people die off and there's no longer enough people to push through the tower, then they'd be stuck here until they actually die in real-life, that is assuming that nobody finds a solution to safely get them out before then.

As bleak as things could possibly get, Fox seemed unfazed by the situation and Mao couldn't help but be impressed by her confidence. "You know, I imagine you may not think so or care but-".

Mao was cut off by the sudden appearance of a quest material right at his feet. He swiped at it as quickly and ferociously as a bear at its prey and instinctively proclaimed "Score!" after having failed his last two attempts. Quickly realizing what he'd done to draw attention to himself, he took a quick glance around to see if anyone was looking at him funny before awkwardly clearing his throat and returning to the search.

  12. "No no, I've played plenty myself. I was just curious". Fox was young, but Mao could tell she had a sharp tongue. He thought it best to not comment on anything pointless like her believing he followed her which would more than likely make things worse, and to eradicate any weakness in his words and tone since it seemed like that's what Fox was latching onto; while Mao was telling the truth, he was more of a keyboard and mice guy and wasn't as experienced in VR's. Plus, with so many people around, anybody could've been listening in. He scurried about the area looking for his first quest material, but still failed to do so. Just his luck.

[Perhaps a more interesting topic would suffice?]

"So, what do you think about Kayaba's message? Do you think it's truth, or do you think it's bull? I can't help but think it's some incredibly elaborate prank".

(Flipped Link and Purpose by mistake)

  13. Mao felt embarrassed by his mix-up. He wasn't sure how much of it manifested on his face, if at all, but his face felt beet-red regardless. Mao didn't feel slighted at all by the fact that Fox thought he'd slow her down since he deep in his bones, he could feel that it was likely true. For fear of possibly annoying her, he didn't say anything more and let Fox go on her way. He snagged the quest himself and traced her footsteps to the nearest exit. Mao paused just before leaving as a thought wiggled it's way into its mind.

[If what Kayaba said was true, then past this point is true danger.]

Of course, the threat of death was always present in the real-world as well, but it didn't stop distracting thoughts from popping up. Mao shrugged the thought off and stepped into the wilderness where Fox and many others were already searching for materials.

    [Watch out for other players.

The faster we level, the safer we'll be.

Let's make some small talk, I guess.]

Mao began searching for materials himself, and he almost managed to get one until someone else swiped it out from under him and quickly skittered away. He sighed and continued looking. He glanced at Fox. "So...Fox, do you play VRs often?"

  14. "Kon?" Mao said as he exited the menu. He looked up (down really, considering her stature) to find a girl walking away from him and towards Zachariah's shop. He wasn't quite sure if she was the one that spoke to him, but out of everyone that was hurrying to and from the shop, she seemed the most likely. He followed her inside.

[It would be safest to party.

Are there going to be enough spawns for everyone?

This place is a damn fire hazard.]

The innards of the shop were bustling, as expected, and Mao could feel his body start to tense up just a bit. Despite some personal-space violations, he managed to maneuver through the crowd towards the girl and saw that she was a bit younger than he was; he wasn't sure how to react. "Kon, right?" he asked her, "Did you...want to party up? It'd save a lot of time if quests are shared". He held out his hand for a shake. "Oh, and Mao," he said with a smile.

    @Megitsune

  15. Mao breathed a metaphorical sigh of relief as he made the final touches for his character creation. He worked on it as best he could with the time he was given, and while it wasn't perfect, it was certainly good enough. As he hit the button to finalize the character, his screen turned bright and his body began to tingle as his body was disintegrated and reformed in the Town of Beginnings. Mao looked at his hands and wiggled his fingers before swinging around his other limbs to and fro to acclimate his mind to his new body. He looked around and, for just a brief moment, watched all the player-characters bustling up and down the street.

[I need to find a sh-

    I need to see if-

    What are my starting qu-]

Suddenly Mao's vision began to brighten and his body began to tingle again, much like it had just done.

[Again? Did the teleport bug out?]

He found himself in the central plaza surrounded by an endless sea of other confused players. Not long after, the sky turned a blood-red and a dark, god-like figure formed above the crowd which introduced itself as Akihiko Kayaba, the creator of SAO. Kayaba went on to explain the situation that everyone was in before disappearing, the sky returning to normal as he did so. Everyone was stunned, deservedly so, and while Mao was shocked as well, he instead took the time to use the mirror, which wasted all the time he had just spent on character creation, and confirm that it indeed seemed impossible to logoff.

[This has to be a prank, right?

    Why would he do this?

If what he said is the truth, can people actually kill each other?]

Well, if it was a prank, everyone else didn't seem to think so. Discourse erupted across the plaza. Most were distressed and confused while some others were skeptical not unlike himself. Some immediately left the area while others stayed to form parties. Mao hadn't spent even a minute playing the game so all he could really do was stick to his original plan of finding a shield and questing, all the while hoping that either this was a joke or that someone on the outside would fix it soon. He opened his menu and looked at the list of available quests and selected whatever seemed most appropriate as the first one: <<The First Few Lessons are Free>>.

"Well, I guess that will have to do," Mao muttered.

    Mao Vi | 19 | Male | 5'6" | 140lbs

    Appearance

Mao is a pretty average-looking kid: nothing too crazy either direction of the spectrum. His hair is a golden-brown with straight strands and kept somewhat messy. He isn’t necessarily scrawny, but he does have a small body frame. His only form of dedicated exercise is during gym class at school, and though it is, he takes it pretty seriously giving his muscles a slightly-toned appearance.

    History

Mao was born to middle-of-the-road, hard-working, and loving parents. Due to their work schedules, Mao unfortunately wasn’t able to spend much time with them and even less so with them together. That combined with sprinkles of family gatherings made up for most of his social interactions in his early years. He went into schooling with decent etiquette and manners, but with regards to getting along with his peers, it was quite a struggle and riddled with trial-and-error. Through the years, he actively worked to become better at reading situations and dealing with them accordingly. Academically, he certainly didn't have the greatest grades, but he was slightly above average.

Mao and his friends were big into gaming and when they heard about SAO, they knew they had to get in on it. Maximizing their chances to get a key, they all signed up in hopes of getting just one. They even went so far as to asking if other friends, family, and classmates could help them out by signing up themselves. All that effort was put to waste as Mao, both luckily and unluckily, was the only one able to snag a key. The group planned a LAN party at Mao's place on the day of release and while he wanted to play it, it wasn't the main focus: he'd just try it out for a bit then tell his friends how it went later as they played other games. Set-up and troubleshooting issues kept delaying his drop into SAO, and when he finally managed to get in, he was immediately teleported to the central plaza...

    Personality

Mao is a relatively quiet person though that’s a result of being more reserved than being shy. He is laid-back, friendly, and prefers to avoid confrontations and diffuse situations if possible. Generally, he won't do much of anything physically unless something irks him enough to compel him to do so, and even then, he doesn't consistently do so.

He is always trying to think of the best or safest solution for any given situation, and he carries this over to conversations and relationships. More often than not, he tends to respond with the words that someone wants the hear rather than what he would actually want to say as long as it’s not a problem to do so, but that is not to say they are mutually exclusive; more often then not, they coincide. When it comes to annoying or overly-aggressive people, he’d prefer to just avoid them entirely rather than confront or appease them.

All this delicate balancing that he does, for fear of once misstep sending him off the beam, gives him latent anxiety. In real life, he noticed it from time to time but it wasn't too bad to deal with. Now that he’s stuck in SAO, it has gotten more difficult to deal with.

    Virtues:

    • Level-headed - Mao is one to stay neutral and diffuse any problematic situations. To this end, he tries his best to stay calm and capture all angles in order to form the best or safest solution to an issue. Whenever he struggles to or is unable to grasp a situation, he gets stressed and anxious.
    • Earnest - Falling in line with his want to control and resolve situations, Mao believes it is best to be sincere with his words. However, when it comes to having to choose between the two, he leans toward the former to the dismay of his internal compass. He also tries to stick to his moral compass and convictions, but again, they generally take the backseat to keeping the peace though that may change depending on the severity of situations.
    • Multi-thinker - Even when he’s not doing much of anything, Mao is always is keeping an ear and eye out on his surroundings while maintaining focus on any tasks at hand. He isn’t always running multiple trains of thoughts through his mind though he is certainly capable of handling quite the load. However, in time of extreme stress he is still prone to getting overwhelmed.

    Flaws:

    • Softhearted -For lack of a less redundant phrase, Mao is kindhearted. Though he doesn’t actively go out to help people in need, he does feel compelled to do so when he comes across them, sometimes even against his better judgment. In the world of SAO, his soft-heartedness and his level-headedness tend to clash much more than in the real world as he can struggle between choosing an optimal solution and a self-righteous solution.
    • Non-violent - Mao was always one to resort to diplomacy rather than war. Videogames were obviously exempt to not being real, but now that he is stuck in SAO, his pacifism has simmered up again. Despite the looming implication of death, a part of him still maintains that the world is still a game and he is still able to take action against less threatening mobs. However, he is much more cautious against more dangerous mobs, that is if he is able to get the courage to face them in the first place. In regards to open-world/lethal PvP, he does his best to avoid it like the plague. The only time he would take action would be when someone is actively trying to PK his close allies and friends, and even then, he likely wouldn’t be able to fight to the best of his ability.
    • Anxious - Mao’s whole self is one big balancing act: he’s afraid that if he leans too far one way or another, he will fall and that that will create problems. He does a good job at this, but because of it, he has slight, underlying anxiety that never quite goes away. In active situations, he is able to keep himself composed, but all the effort that he puts into doing so adds onto the anxiety that hits him afterwards. Depending on how severe and stressful a situation is, it may leave him mentally debilitated for extended periods of time afterwards, primarily keeping inside safezones for fear of making a serious or even grave mistake doing something out in the wilderness. Going into a situation before he has recovered from this runs the risk of him making mistakes that are unlike him to make, and doing so repeatedly with exacerbate the issue.
