  1. "Well, hopefully, there's nothing foul going on. If that is the case, I'd rather leave them be. They'll be fine on their own if they're together. I recently got into games later than they did, so I think they'll be fine. I need to catch up. Once I do that, everything will be fine from there, and we can start hitting this game where it hurts! After all, we are long overdue to add our own firepower into the mix."

Xlear casually walks around as he's searching, keeping track of his count. "So, Freyd. What has it been like for you and those making the way for us small fish in this big pond? I bet it's been bad, but it can't all be that bad, right? Got any funny stories to tell? Or is it just something weird to look out for once I see the rest of you all up there? Because this won't be the last you see of me."

  2. "Well, I should remind you that I never met these folks they went with. As far as my friends, Haruto is a bit thin, around my height if a bit taller. If there's a better thing to notice him by, he's got this scar on his neck. When we were kids, he was messing around with his dad's tools and got that from it. He always lies and says he got it from a bird pecking him. But that's nothing to brag about when you think about it. Unless he took a recommendation from someone, he should still be using claws. We all dared each other to use a weapon that the other person chose for another. Genma chose for Haruto to use the claws, Haruto chose for me to use the big sword, and I chose for Genma to use a spear. And speaking of Genma, he's just a fat idiot. And he's got this terrible laugh, but terrible in that it's almost contagious. It's hard to explain; you'd have to hear it to understand."

Xlear ends up rambling a bit about his friends. He doesn't want to depend on others for help like this, but if these people aren't genuine, there is no way he can help them on his own. He wasn't above asking for help—far from it—especially if forgoing tips would mean death here. Still, he felt more responsible for them both. He had to leave this death trap with them both alive.

"Alright, back to this quest." He walks into the shop of Zackariah. "Hello!"

  3. "I've tried several times to message them, but neither has responded since the other day. Genma said they would take on a mob boss and that it was fun. He said something about the group having another guy in there who's all cloak-and-dagger. Still, I can see on my friends list that they're still...well here. So, for now, they're fine. Still, I am a tad antsy and should kinda hurry and make my way up there to them."

As the duo approached the shop and Freyd fell more in line behind Xlear, the greenhorn player nodded at his comment about Zackariah. "Well, gathering shouldn't be hard then, right? Just find a bunch of what he needs in one place and get them all there. Easy." He walks up to the door and lets himself inside.

"I guess this means all NPCs will have a different experience. It's almost a nice way to take a break from worrying so much about our situation, which can get draining sometimes."

  4. "To think Kayaba would want to add these things in an already stressful game. But I'm just starting to think he treats this as a joke or something. Not cool at all." Xlear follows his benefactor to Zackariah's abode, wondering what to expect from this next person. As he walks, he glances around the area and observes other lower-level players moving around town.

"Sheesh. I wonder if they'd also hit this place up for the quest. I wouldn't be too surprised. When I last talked to them, they said they were already heading to the fifth floor. It's great that they're moving on, but with everything you told me earlier, it's almost too good to be true. I decided to leave, and now they do? I was excited at first, thinking that seeing me leave finally gave them that push. I'm probably overthinking it, but you don't think these people they're with could be..not one hundred percent with them?"

  5. "Yeah, I need to hurry to see them again. I just can't go too fast with things, or I could end up dead. I still can't grasp that, even after looking at the monument daily. It's just not something you'd ever think you would hear." He tenses up slightly upon seeing some boars roaming the area. Part of him wanted to fight them to test himself, but he had to remind himself not to make foolish decisions like that. After all, this type of mindset is how many people don't even make it to the second floor.

"Wow. You must not like him at all, or you've done this quest a million times. Or both." Xlear smiles in slight amusement as Freyd practically bullies Dorian into silence.

"So, do I simply express my willingness to take the quest, or is there a specific procedure to follow? Unless there's no real right or wrong way to do these kinds of things."

  6. "Kayaba... right. He's got way more blood on his hands than anyone in here." Xlear decided not to dwell on it, instead listening to Freyd's suggestions. At the mention of Tolbana and the mayor, he perks up. "Heh. I guess some things don't change even in a game like this. I might be lingering around there before I move on."

As they continued to move on, Xlear began thinking about his plan for moving through the floors to catch up with the other frontliners. He wasn't treating this like some walk in the park, yet he silently didn't want to think of every day being filled with fear and looking over his shoulder. That could get exhausting after a while. He looks to Freyd once he mentions his friends.

"Yeah, they kinda got lucky, and a party of mid-clearers, you could say, asked them to join up so that they could get them up to speed. It was right after I started leaving to go out alone. At first, they were too scared to go, and they practically begged me not to leave the town either."

  7. "I knew PKers were an issue, but I didn't know they could still get away with it even by being green. My buddies and I were all nervous about PKers, which made us not want to leave the town. I don't know why I decided to leave now. I got tired of being afraid. Even my friends are going out to take this game down."

The white-haired newbie briefly looks around, the thought of a PKer putting him on edge again. Still, if there were one still on this floor, it'd have been news around town by now. However, he imagines it will be an issue on the higher floors. Dismissing that thought, he then answers Freyd's introduction.

"Oh, Xlearsight is the name. Just Xlear would be fine, though. If you're offering, then I won't say no to it. I need to learn how actually to fight, anyway. I hope Haruto and Genma are getting some help from others, too. I don't know what I'd do if I saw their names on that Monument..."

  8. "Knight Shift...Floor 21. Got it." He nods to himself as he tries to remember that for later. Still, that was for whenever he makes it to that floor, which would make it a bad idea for him to make that trip now at his current level. He could only imagine the kind of mobs on that floor, which made him slightly shudder. He originally planned on doing a few quests for some col, but more importantly, to get himself into a habit of doing quests.

"You already looked a little busy, though. If it's just quests on this floor, it shouldn't be that hard, right?" He directs his attention to the plains ahead of him, searching for any monsters that look like a decent starting point. Thanks to the system's assistance, his two-handed sword was light, but he was now wondering if he had made the wrong choice when he first selected his starting weapon. However, he couldn't have known this would happen with the whole death-game issue.

Xlear sighs to himself as he then shifts to meet Freyd's gaze. "I think I'll be good at least on these first few floors by my lonesome. I can't always ask for help, so I'll need to learn."

  9. "AH!!" Xlear stopped in his tracks upon the sudden arrival of Freyd. Despite having no experience with fighting yet, his hand reflexively hovers over the handle of his sword strapped to his back. He wasn't ready, but he would fight if he had to in case this player was more devious.

Oh, but wait, he has a green cursor. Okay, he's good, then.

"I mean...ahhhh, looking for food. I figured that. Have any luck so far?" He finally sets his hand down to his side again, studying Freyd more closely. Thinking to himself, Xlear wondered if many of the frontliners just found it pleasant to come down here often. Even if it was to take a break from clearing, he thinks he wouldn't have time to do that once he's up and fighting with them.

"And I don't know how it's going. I'm only now deciding to get off my scaredy-cat phase and start climbing floors. Better late than never, right?" He slowly and nervously chuckles to himself.

  10. After putting this off for another period of time, Xlear had decided that he couldn't let himself get idle again. His friends were now starting to tackle a few quests, so he decided to meet up with them at some point in a few floors. The boots that were accompanied by the armor he had been wearing for as long as the game first started, were now crunching beneath some leaves as he treks his way along a road. Where was he going? Honestly, he had no clue. From where he was walking, however, any player that knows the map of the floor would know that he was currently nearing Horunka. Faint smokestacks rising from the chimneys of a few homes could be seen from where he was. He counted three of them.

"Oh. A town's nearby. Guess I'll go and check it out. Maybe there's a quest that I could attempt to clear.."

  11. "I see. Good to know, thanks for the tip. I'll have to pay attention as I climb the floors then." As the bartender returned with their drinks, Xlear eagerly grabbed his and took a sip, while listening to Morningstar and letting him speak. The grassy flavor of the drink reminded him more like the tea his father would make for everyone when they weren't feeling well. Not exactly the best thing in the world, but it reminded him of home. "Good to meet ya, Star. You can call me Xlear. As you can probably tell, I'm a newbie who finally decided to get off his ass and help push this game along. I'm tired of just sitting here. I don't want to say I'm...well bored, but it's something close to that. Oh, by the way, sir, thanks for the drink!"

To further show his appreciation for it, Xlear proceeds to down the rest of it.

  12. "I'll take what he's having too, sir!" Xlear sits patiently and takes another cursory glance around the tavern. While this wasn't exactly the place to be thinking about fun, he had a slight interest in learning how other bars looked on the higher floors. He was still in the process of getting things together before he eventually leaves the town to start leveling. His friends were both shaken or complacent about the whole situation they were in, but he wasn't going to make them leave if they didn't want to. That would cause complications later, something he might regret. Taking his mind off that thought for now, he looks over at Morningstar and smiles. "Don't think I've seen you on this floor much, are you climbing the floors? I gotta ask, what's it like up there? Also, any uh..PKers to look out for?" He looks around to make sure no other players were inside that could be listening in. He didn't want that info to get out and potentially scare everyone on the floor even more.

  13. As he walks with her, Xlear smiles at the thought of being seen as a reliable player to the others. Yet, he also couldn't help but feel guilty for his friends behind. He hoped they'd heed his warning to stay behind. Maybe he could send them messages, updating on the progress of the game after every floor. That seemed like something he could do. Now, he felt a bit better about doing this. When Nari mentioned of going with him, he held a hand up as if to stop her. "Wait. I think I can take it from here for right now. You're probably busy and got something else you need to do. Like getting yourself ready for the next floor!" He steps closer and gives her a tap on the shoulder, smiling. "I'll be careful, promise. You schooled me on what to do and how to act with these quests! What do you say we make a deal? If I can't catch up to you guys buy the next floor, I'll call you for help, 'kay?"

Xlear then notices the blip in his menu, quickly swiping down to find not one, but two alerts. First, was the friend request he received from Nari, which he quickly accepted. Second, was a message reply. It was from Genma and Haruto! Quickly, Xlear tapped on the name to see their response.

Sorry that you felt the need to do this..but we decided we can't let you beat us even in this, buddy! We're gonna be there together!

    From : LarUT0

Wait for us on the front lines!

Xlear felt himself getting a bit teary-eyed yet smiled. Looks like all they needed was him to wake them up. "Even better now...my buddies are okay! So instead of just me, you'll be seeing three new faces taking these bosses down left and right! Won't have to worry about me anymore! Just have to worry about all of us!" He laughed at this, inspiration and confidence being projected as well from this laugh. "So, new plan, let's tackle a crazy quest when I get to...the fifteenth floor! Sound good? Laters!" With a wave, he rushes off towards Tolbana, punching at the air in victory of inspiring his friends to join him. Everything was going to go well for him now.

  14. Xlear nods in understanding as Nari explains how it'd be better if he were to start with a quest. More XP for leveling for sure, he thought. A better way to navigate the floors as well, the quests could help him with that. "Right, these are just beginner quests. The guy...I forgot his name already..but he'd have to be a sick bastard if he made the beginner quests something outrageous like fighting a dragon. We all would've been in trouble."

He stretches as he then looks around and catches the town that she indicated. Tolbana. Once he's there, it'll start for him. He won't be able to stop until he reaches the frontlines on the highest floor their currently on. He had a feeling at least a floor or two would be cleared before he manages to catch up. He just silently hoped that there wouldn't be much of an issue for him as he climbs. He doubted he'd run into the higher leveled players on the first five floors. That was five floors of breathing room for him to level himself up.

"So, quests and then leveling. Then the field boss and it's onto the next floor. I don't want to leave the current floor I'm on until I've beaten the field boss for that floor. Don't get attached to these NPCs, they aren't real. We are. Don't waste time, just do the quests and keep going. I understand now."

  15. A loud yawn sounds out from Xlear as he enters the tavern a few seconds later. He looks around with some interest, taking the time to take mental notes. Before everything happened with the game becoming deadly, he was underage and therefore, couldn't drink. It wasn't something he worried about too often, but he was a tad annoyed when he'd always hear from Genma and Haruto bragging about how they always had the "good stuff" at home. They even teased him for a while when he explained to them that his dad would surely kill him if he found out about him drinking. So the thought of even looking at a bar made him nervous. If now was a good time to try it out, he'd go for it. He could rub it in his friends' faces later. He walks further inside to take a seat for himself at the bar. The white-haired greenhorn of a player had a rather mischievous glint in his eye, the kind one would know when a younger person has the notion they are doing something daring and getting away with it.

  16. "Of course, we're supposed to work together, silly. That's the only way we'll be able to go home. I wasn't trying to say that I could do it alone! I barely even know how to do this gaming thing, and here I am, stuck in virtual reality but also a reality in the fact you can die!" Xlear found himself laughing at that statement for a few seconds, but when he noticed that Nari seemed stoic and non-expressive, he quickly stopped and cleared his throat. "I'm sorry, that wasn't very funny at all. It's just my way of trying to...cope?"

He looks her in the eye, surprise showing on his face as she mentions that he is a quick learner. He didn't believe he had done anything to be labeled that, but if she saw something, he wouldn't question her. From how even her tone was, Xlear had a hunch she was likely doing the bare minimum without attaching herself. At least, that's what he gathered from these exchanges with her. Snapping back to attention, he hears her speak of the beginner quests. He didn't even know where to start when it came to doing the quest.

"Oh. No, I haven't done any of those yet. Sorta slipped my mind. I just figured I'd do some leveling first and then come back to them later or when I'm ready for the field boss and to move on to the next floor. Should I do those first or...?"

  17. "Oh right..forgot we’re all working together. Still, I just want to be a decent player to the point you guys don’t need to worry about me. I know it’s risky, but being around players is just as risky as a boss. I think my greatest fear would be being targeted by a PKer. I know there’s been a lot of them and there’s probably more out there..waiting. I want to take them down, too...” He watches the players out on the field, smiling as he recognizes some of them also decided to walk out to take on the game now as well. He silently prayed that they’d rise to the top together to meet the other front-liners. But, he needed to focus on honing his skills, right now.

“Teleportation crystals. Got it, always keep some on standby. Here’s hoping I won’t need them if I’m keeping up with my leveling, right? And that’s right, that’s how some of these guys died already because like I said before, they tried to take on the field boss with no strategy or leveling before doing it. I can’t get caught off guard by that."

  18. “Oh..damage mastery overrides any damage enhancements on your weapon? Good thing you told me that then, I would’ve been trying to stack nothing but damage on my weapons. Maybe..maybe I should go for accuracy. Hm, accuracy for enhancements and damage for mastery. What should I get for my armor...? I was thinking mitigation would be nice, but maybe some life stealing too?” He was starting to picture the potential builds in his head already, being able to hit was definitely something he wanted to always keep. Making attacks and missing was just the same as not attacking. Accuracy was important, to ensure those hits land. Damage, to kill the mobs or boss faster. He wanted to be able to support himself reliably, so that the tanks he’d be working with wouldn’t need to worry about him.

“Okay! I think I know what I want to do! If it’s possible, I’m going to be a self-healing, boss killing machine! That way, nobody has to worry about me when I get low, I can kill something and get healed right back up! We can kill bosses' way faster like that, right?”  He sighs as he once again thinks about his friends, thinking if he could somehow motivate them, the three of them could be a team and take on this game along with the others. Until he could, though..it didn’t seem as if simply talking to them was going to do much. Maybe if he helped clear the next few floors, then they’d probably get out of their funk. All he could do was hope that was the case.

  19. He nods in understanding, surprised that a unique weapon like that wouldn’t just be in a class of its own. Something to think about for sure should he ever want a different approach in fighting. He watches her flourish her weapon and listens to her speak, taking mental notes. He then found himself attempting a maneuver similar to hers but decides to just do a simple twirl with his hands. “Wish you could do something like that and all, the mobs would run off. Too bad that ain’t a real skill.” He then answers her on the topic of sword arts and nods his head. “Yep, I know those terms at least. I might be going toward DPS myself with my skills.” As they approached the gates, he turned around to check his messages. Neither of his friends messaged back, eliciting a sigh from him. “DPS build is what I would use, I’m not sure if I could tank well enough or support in time. I just want to smash those damn bosses and mobs to beat them down!

  20. “I have more than just fear to keep me goin’. We got a game to finish! It’s scary, but so is being stuck here forever or something. Not to discredit you guys, but what if some of you give up? Or decide to exploit other players because you’re so far ahead? This is the second wave that’s gonna help take this game down and if it’s gonna take me to get them to get up and start running for the top, I don’t mind leading the charge.” He watches as she equips the wicked-looking polearm, his eyes widening. “Whoa..! What are the stats on that thing? Is that considered a spear in this game? You’d think it would be more like an axe or something. That’s pretty cool!” He then laughed and shook his head at her next question.

“Nope. Not a thing! I don’t even know what kind of monsters there are out there! I know there’s a field boss. It killed a few idiots the other day who thought they could spike their leveling by taking it on without any kind of training with the mobs. I wanted to tell them not to go, but I was still scared back then..”

Clenching his fists, he then equips the standard two-hander. “I did some practice with sword arts. I know those at least. They’re the main thing that keeps your DPS going, right? Or at least that’s what I’ve heard from others. I just need some tips on fighting mobs, if you could teach me that, I’ll be doing this in my sleep! Well maybe not in my sleep, but you know what I mean!”

  21. He nods solemnly as she mentions the idea of another name on the Monument. It seemed almost discouraging to all the players, but most likely the front liners especially, to see more names on there. He was well aware, that his life could also be lost in this fight. Still, he wasn’t going to wait for it to be finished either. He didn’t think of himself as anyone special, as he’s rather inexperienced at gaming. Yet, he had that same drive to want to finish and help the other front liners..or dare he think of it like this, but be some sort of sign to the others that stay on this floor, that they can...no, will win.

” If you want to help me, I guess. I won’t say no to help, but that means you can’t refuse mine in the future. Got it?”

Seeing her beginning to walk away, the white-haired upstart walked after her, deciding to shoot a quick message to his friends. This wasn’t the goodbye he wanted to give them..but, then again it wasn’t a goodbye. No! He was going to come back. But he’d need to train up first. Going to train! Stay safe and don’t leave the Town! There could be PKers out there. See ya soon.”

With a smile, he finishes the message and keeps his attention on Nari.

I am scared, remember? But I’m still not staying here either!”

  22. The late bloomer shakes his head slowly at Nari’s question about him venturing to the higher floors. Up until now, he’d been afraid to leave his friends behind. They were the only people he knew, and they were scared to leave the first floor, even if they wouldn’t admit it themselves. Still, the news would travel, mainly from info brokers or some front liners who would occasionally return to this floor to possibly check on other friends who were not fighters. Something that he realized he’d be doing now, but..maybe not too much. There was a game to beat, after all.

” Aw, don’t worry. I’m planning to go into the other floors for some hardcore leveling. I can’t arrive at the current floor and join the rest of you guys being under-leveled, right?” His smile falters after a few seconds with her next few questions, with him averting his eyes to the ground. “Well..no. It’s my first time going out. As for me going alone, yeah, I am. My buddies are still too..well complacent, but also scared. I won’t lie to you; this is still all new to me. Like gaming itself.  But these things are supposed to be fun, right? I just one day got sick of seeing this..this dullness. Everyone is either depending on all the other front liners to clean the floors, or they’re too scared. I’m still kinda scared. Who in their right mind is getting a kick out of this? I’ll tell you, nobody. I just want to help in any way I can, so we can clear this game a little faster. Then we can go home and play actual fun games again.”

He then brings his eyes back up to hold her gaze, frowning from his emotions directing his words now more than logic. Not that logic was the goal here, it was pretty cut and dry. Everyone is scared of death. Yet some fight to survive. It’s all they can do. And it seemed his survival instincts were being sidetracked by a need to protect. “Don’t worry about wasting your time on me. I can handle it. I think. No, I know. I got to.”

  23. As he was beginning to dash back toward the plaza, he hears a voice calling out to him, which causes him to stop in his tracks. “Hey…you with the white hair.” “Yeah?” He turns to face her, a mix of nervousness and confidence plastered on his face. He listened as she asked him questions, perking up when she mentions if he was leaving the safety of the wall. He rubs the back of his head and nods. “I sure am. What’s wrong, did something happen? Is a new PKer on the loose? Gah, I thought Genma said he’d stay on top of that.”
It was at this point; he finally noticed the name atop her head. Nari. Nari-Lanreth. She seemed pretty geared up, compared to him at least. That armor was not something a player could get on this floor unless it was a secret quest! Or maybe… “Wait, are you..one of the Frontliners? What’s it like on the other floors...?”

  24. The rapid fall of footsteps sounded alongside the general hustle and bustle that showed the overall soul of the Town of Beginnings. Running past NPCs and players alike, some of the players giving him a look of annoyance and shouting out to him, a white-haired young man began to pant as he made his way back to the large plaza where his friends were waiting. Well, not waiting, maybe, just lazing about. The veteran player would likely see a spunky guy running by a smirk of excitement upon his face. "Heh, alright. Let's go through the inventory one more time. Weapon, check. Armor, on. Potions newly bought. I think all that's left to do is let the guys know I'm leaving. Can't believe it's up to me to go out and do something."  He chuckles to himself, yet there was a twinge of uneasiness he felt overcome him. He should've expected this, yet there was a part of him that almost didn't want to leave. But he had to. He couldn't sit idle anymore. Now's the time for helping the advancing players finish this.

    Age: Seventeen (Pre-SAO), Nineteen (Current)
    Gender: Male
    Height: 5'10

    Background:

    History

Daisuke was the third child of a family of five, which made him believe he had more freedom than his other siblings as he was just..there. His family life was about as normal as most could be, maybe a bit more cramped. At around seven, he had begun to take up an interest in martial arts and gaming, but his parents weren't the type to jump and spoil their children with gifts or anything. Thankfully, they were at least willing to allow him to join a Karate club during his middle school years. He met a few people who would become his close friends, Genma and Haruto. They were cousins living together because Haruto's parents had jobs overseas. After school was over for the day, Daisuke would have sparring matches with his friends or goofing around with them at Genma's house.

Daisuke started to get his first actual gaming taste instead of always hearing about it or watching someone else with one. He spent the new few years or so like that, always making an excuse or another to go and visit his friends to play games. As gaming became more ambitious and broader in more than one sense, Daisuke and his friends caught wind of the VRMMO Sword Art Online. By this point, Daisuke was a working man and had saved up enough to splurge for once. Haruto and Genma were with him, waiting in line to grab their copy of the game alongside the NerveGear. Triumphant in with their patience, the three boys Initially. Originally amazed and excited to be among the first to experience something of this magnitude, the three friends would have their hopes dashed alongside the other 10,000 players who were now trapped in a Death Game. Daisuke stayed with his friends, considering he was still the least experienced at gaming. Yet after hearing about some players dying after leaving the Town of Beginnings, the three of them were all reasonably shaken and not confident in trying to finish the game.

Haruto and Genma ended up lounging around and simply biding their time, assuming that the game would be cleared eventually. Daisuke himself didn't believe it'd be cleared before some people became hysterical if they hadn't already. Seeing that his friends had given up themselves on trying to help clear the game, Daisuke took it upon himself to fight. He'd make his decision apparent to them both and said to come find him when they were ready, but until then, he'd be the one leading the three of them out if he had to. Taking some time in the town, Daisuke would gear up and prepare to work his way up to joining the frontlines and defeating the game.

    V. Yet, somehowirtues

    1. Friendly—Overall, Xlear is an approachable person. Having been in the good company of Haruto and Genma, he's confident in talking to others and ensuring that all the clearers are—Because he's typically instead trusting, Xlear is blind to the fact that this is still a death game and that any of the remaining players might become more jaded or may already them that he's there for them should they need his help. He also has the idea of all the clearers being under one single banner to complete the game much faster.
    2. Protective - Stemming from his desire to ease his friends' worries and to also get them out of their lazy phase, Xlear is innately a person that feels he should protect or otherwise shoulder and share a burden. Especially with a friend.
    3. Loyal - Xlear is loyal towards a person or a group of individuals who has earned his trust, which isn't hard. He's supportive of anyone's goals should they be reasonable, and he may even offer his assistance should they need it.

    Flaws

    1. Careless - Because he's normally rather trusting, Xlear is blind to the fact this is still a death game and that any of the remaining players might become more jaded or may already just be despicable. He's still very naive despite his noble intentions and overall kind aura.

Impatient—Xlear believes it's a race to finish the game, so his restless energy tends to show in a way that makes him unable to sit down or plan. Planning is not his forte, and he knows it. He's more of an improviser.

    1. Irresponsible - Also stemming from this gung-ho approach, Xlear may even forget things or otherwise come off as incompetent to others because of how unorganized he is.
