  1. Already out in the fields surrounding the Town of Beginnings, Jeeves' goggle-gagged head swiveled to and fro searching for the perfect site.  Having already outfitted himself with the requisite experimental gear and supplies, the protocols were laid out in explicit detail in his notebook.  He just needed the proper sample density and type to establish a baseline.  Evangeline would have her fill and he would have his data.  Mutual exchange could be so rewarding when properly prepared and manifest.  These mobs had no idea that they were all little more than guinea pigs, at this point. Just like players had wandered blind into Kayaba's cage.  He remembered his own naiveté from the early days, thinking it all just a stream of effluent data to be parsed, analyzed and ultimately discarded.  Nothing much had changed, he admitted; only roles and goals.  His had changed in the aftermath of Miri and Tython's sudden departure and Quaestor's sublimation into malaise.  It was past time he did something about it.

  2. Jeeves knocked softly on the NPC's shop door, politely waiting for a response that never came.  Twice more he followed through on courtesy and protocol, before finally finding the nerve to quietly make his way in.

"Hello?"  Barely more than a whisper, his voice failed to carry through the belching and bubbling clatter of various substances in the midst of percolating into some manner of concoction that still seemed suspiciously likely to explode.

"Oh, hi there!  Welcome!  Are you looking for something?"  The young woman running the shop wore a thick leather apron heavily stained and partially melted on the one side.  She had loops and pockets layered all over her outfit, half filled with parchment, containers or other concoctions in various states of stability.

"To learn."  If seemed a simple response, but the implications were far more significant.  Goggles still firmly strapped to his head, Jeeves eyes flitted from phial to filter like a kid in a proverbial candy store, eager to see what each could produce.

"Oh.  You're one of those.  Yes, I do take on students from time to time, but I've no provisions at the moment and..."  Evangeline blinked, the boy having vanished and door subtly closed in his wake.  "Well, that took a lot less time than usual."  Assuming he'd already given up, she merely returned to her work.  Meanwhile, Jeeves was already half way out of town and making a mental list of how best to obtain additional samples of what he'd already seen.

  3. Eyes wide, uncertain of how best to meet expectations, Jeeves wasn't used to this kind of polite exchange anymore.  Not since Miri... left.  Re-acquaint was required.  How else could the part be played?

"Ummm... thank you."  Brief was always best.  No one paid attention or remembered.  Brief was safest too.  Eyes darting side to side in search of some expected outcome, his hands reached forth and slowly took the package, pulling it back and nestling it in the crook beneath his arm.  A precious tool solicited and obtained.  Another step in the formula complete.  Pivoting on a worn boot heel, the boy said nothing more, but casually exited the shop.

Once clear, Jeeves broke into a run, his heart racing at the prospect of a perfectly crafted tool made precisely to his specifications.  Like a kid experiencing his first Christmas, he tore into the burlap seizing the blade within and clutching it with unbridled avarice and pride.  After so much waiting, the time had finally come.

  4. The innocent-looking young man had been in the shop for some time frantically scribbling notes, but repeatedly erasing and modifying whatever vision he was working on in his small booklet.  Its outer cover was remarkably ornate, the leather meticulously tanned, cured and sealed against moisture penetration.  Whatever it contained was precious enough to merit extravagant protection.  He seemed to be sketching, over and over again, as if trying to extract a thought to paper, no mean feat for anyone lacking the requisite artistic talent.  Finally satisfied, frustration melting from his face and shoulders, he crept cautiously up to the shopkeeper waiting his turn to be acknowledged.  When an appropriate pause finally came, he nervously crept forward to convey his designs.

    "This, please."

Unexpectedly macabre, the drawing showed a crude plague doctor's outfit straight out period textbooks from the 16th or 17th century.  The kid knew his history, or had simply watched too much anime in his limited lifespan.  Wide blue eyes shone with eager excitement at the prospect of the outfit made real, the hand not clutching his manual pushed forth with a random assortment of gathered items as some offer of payment.

  5. There would have been no way for Ren to have known how long the boy was standing there, so still and silent had he been.  Jeeves held a bucket of water in his hands and had been waiting patiently for the smith's moment of need. Sloshing in its container was what gave him away, Ren nearly jumping with a start at discovering his unannounced visitor.

    "Sorry."

Wiping his sweaty brow with a relatively clean rag, Ren forced and awkward laugh.  "I wasn't expecting anyone this late.  If there something I can do for you?"  The boy simply handed him a roll of parchment, which was opened and examined.

"Are you sure?  There might be better ways than this."  Jeeves just pointed politely at the page.  "Fine.  Fine, if that's what you want.  It shouldn't take me very long."

"How much?"  Jeeves looked worried that it might be more than he had scraped together.  Large financial decisions tended to stress him out, especially given his limited means.

"Nothing at all, kid.  I insist.  Just five me a few minutes."

  6. A you man, barely more than a boy entered the shop, quietly scraping his boots and setting them aside prior to roaming.  Hi mop of mousy brown hair swayed slightly in an effervescent manner, as if his entire being wafted on the cloud.  Bright blue eyes absorbed every piece on display, looking but not touching, for that would be rude.  He didn't like rude people.  They were often also the mean ones.

"Can I have those please," he mumbled into his own collar, "I can pay."  Pulling a handful of odds and ends gathered off the streets of by means of charity,  Jeeves waited patiently for the items to be handed to him.  Wonder sparkled in his vast blue iris, a pair of industrial-looking goggles strapped to his brow, smeared with grease and who knew what manner of grime.  About to turn and leave, his feet paused as he hesitated in the manner of a child and turned back towards the shop keeper.

"Thank you very much.  I will treasure these."  Bowing quickly, he ran out the door, nearly forgetting his footwear but retrieving it in the final moment.

  7. Virtues

Studious - Possessed of a voracious appetite for lore, Jeeves buried himself in books and online databases at an early age.  Adept with numbers and sharp as a whip, he prefers not to brag or show off his talents for fear of drawing unwanted attention.  Such distractions only get in the way of his hobbies and other pursuits.
Quiet - Overshadowed by a boisterous and beautiful older sister accustomed to taking charge, Jeeves has learned to accomplish things without making noise or drawing attention.  A man of few words, he prefers to let others take centre stage and be the focus of attention.  Most will often forget that he is present at all.
Clever - Often overlooked and underestimated because of his apparent age, Jeeves has learned to use his youthful looks to his advantage.  His street smarts have grown to match his booksmarts by virtue of necessity.  Where others might prefer direct approaches, Jeeves keeps his means and motives to himself and often comes at problems from the side.

    Flaws

Headstrong - Accustomed to being ignored, Jeeves gets things done despite what others want or think of him.  His goals are his own, and others who assume that they can boss him around will soon find out differently.  Not one to vocalize his frustrations, he will simply ignore denials or demands placed upon him or go around any related obstacles.
Blunt - In his goal to become more self-reliant, Jeeves has let his social graces slide.  Whenever he actually chooses or is compelled to speak, the words spill out with brutal honesty.  He's unlikely to get himself a date anytime soon, not that he appears to care about such things.
Obsessive - You don't survive by giving up on your goals.  What Jeeves wants, Jeeves gets, by whatever means necessary.  If that means using others or breaking a few rules to make it happen, so be it.

    Background:

Jeeves, Typhon, Quaestor and his older sister Smarmy (aka 'Miri') were inseparable during the early days of SAO, forming the Madrigal as one of the game's first guilds and making a name for themselves. It all came crashing down a few months in when Miri and Typhon were suddenly lost to some sort of game glitch.  Quaestor withdrew into himself at the loss of his wife, leaving young Jeeves alone with his grief.  The guild shattered and fell prey to vulturous players who swooped in to pick the carcass clean.  The first year was especially tough, bouncing between orphanages and back alleys in the Town of Beginnings.  Jeeves survived by becoming the follower that bullies and bosses always wanted to have in tow, making himself just valuable enough to keep around without placing himself in the spotlight.  It was a tough life and forced him to grow up a lot faster than he'd expected.

Between street gangs and serving as a runner for merchants and others needing things done, Jeeves eventually graduated to the unofficial status of fixer.  He moved around a lot, going wherever the work was, and eventually getting looped in with the broker network.  Though never one to sell secrets himself, the boy was smart enough to appreciate discretion and the value of a wide array of contacts   Having recently heard that Miri and Tython were rescued and alive, Jeeves has quietly returned to the fold and taken his expected place behind his old guildmates, though not in the manner that they all likely expect.  Only time will tell where his loyalties actually lay.
