About:

About the most abrasive kid in the school, Toby Wessel had a strangely unnerving knack for making enemies in all the wrong place. His wit and silver tongue earned him both detention and the admiration of his peers. What infuriated the teachers most, though, was his uncanny abilities in all academic subjects. The easy A’s he racked up only served as salt in an open wound for many teachers. At home, he lives with his dad, his mom dead from breast cancer for the past three years. He has only picked up his avid video gaming habit recently, a hobby for his ever-increasing spare-time, courtesy of his apathy towards school clubs.

 

Virtues:

Loyal- 

“You do not die here!”

It’s hard to gain the friendship of one such as Toby. It’s hard to even get to like him, considering his facetious, selfish nature. But if you do end up friends with him, he will remain with you to the bitter end. In fact, his friends end up being the only ones relatively safe from his sharpened tongue. This has the added side-effect of making him a beast of vengeance when his friends get killed.

 

Happy-go-lucky-

“So, we’ll catch some lunch, get some Col, lynch Kayaba, and get an inn. Sound good?”

Toby lives in the moment, barely acknowledging the past, and looking only to the future. He’s up for anything, most of the time, jumping between activities as easily as one would change clothes. He’s always grinning, cracking jokes, even (see: especially) when danger rears his head, mostly because it’s a way for him to not succumb to intense fear.

 

Smart-

Back in the real world, Toby was a math whiz, and most of his logical sense has translated over into SAO. His street smarts are not exactly up to snuff, making him a little bit naive, but if there’s anyone you need to calculate something, he’s your guy. His intelligence is perhaps the one thing everyone who knows him can actually agree on.

 

Flaws:

Self-serving-

“Look, I don’t care to hear your sob story about your family you left behind, because we all have one. This is the game we gotta play. This is the game I gotta win.”

If Toby had to kill to get back to the real world, kill people, he’d do it, without a doubt. Almost every single thought he has in this game is for himself, making him not exactly suited for team-play. While he doesn’t go out of his way to screw people over, he doesn’t really find a lot wrong with it when it does happen, seeing it as the victim’s fault for not understanding his motives fully.

 

Sarcastic- 

“No. I’m in this dungeon because I enjoy the scenery.”

Toby’s mouth runs. And runs. The reason that one group of players look at him like a bit of pond scum? Yeah. That’s his endless well of snark at work. The reason he ends up with his foot in his mouth fifty percent of the time? Because he can’t keep his mouth shut without it.

 

Over-confident-

“Boss? Yeah, let me handle this. Be back in ten.”

Suicidally over-confident, Toby doesn’t really learn his lesson unless he’s three hit points to death. Unfortunately, while that does teach him a lesson, every time he comes back from the brink just feeds his illusion of untouchability. And god-forbid he makes good on his boast, or you won’t hear the end of it.
