COMPLETE [SP-F1] The Grind Pt.1

Recommended Posts

Persistence was something Teselmar had picked up on floor 2, training in the martial arts skill. If he could break a boulder with his fists, he could keep attacking a couple of sentient bushes. His blade came up again, and he dashed forward, trying to avoid the vines and take another stab at the second creeper.

He'd drove the blade home again, but got careless. For his trouble, the two creeper vines picked him up, and slammed him into the ground! He rebounded and struggled to his feet, checking his HP bar: The damage had been largely mitigated by his armor, but the humiliation was still there. "Ouch... Ok, you two are off the Christmas card list." He shook the stars from his vision, and backed up slowly.

Teselmar was in discomfort from the thrashing he'd just received, but his will was just as strong. He bounced back from the ground and moved backwards, the creepers following him all the way. "No means no, $!#%." One's tentacle vines came a little too close, and he attempted to lop at it when it drew near.

His clumsy attempt resulted in the vine whipping the rapier from his hand! It landed a few feet away, sticking up in the ground. Teselmar stared at it in disbelief for a second. "Just once... I'd like to get through a fight without something like that happening." The whipping he received as he retrieved his weapon was humiliating, and he returned the blade to his hand, gritting his teeth in anger.

He was getting a little bit aggravated now, dealing with these f%^&ers. Teselmar feinted right, then stabbed viciously to the left, attemoting to frive the tip of his blade deep into the monster's center mass.

It didn't bite very deep, but at the very least Teselmar was able to score a hit on the plant monster. It occurred to him that perhaps he'd let his relatively lucky success with the field hounds go to his head. He slipped around the attack that followed, dodging as best he could.

Teselmar had been dancing with these monsters for some time now. He had come so far, it would probably be worth the loot drop if fortune favored him at all. Encouraged but cautious, he saw one of the plant beasts lashing out at him, and attempted to counter it with a strike of his own.

Teselmar should have known better than to tempt the fates like that. He missed horribly, the monster smacking him across the face, and its friend following suit. Teselmar was now frustrated, and tired. His HUD said that he'd earned a skill pointfor this encouter; it was time to cut his losses at this point.

Teselmar turned and ran, attempting to leave the threatened area of the two plant monsters. He'd gained some valuable experience, but it would take more than what he had now in order to take on three of the rotten blighters at once, at least at the level he was at now. Better off hunting down a new set of monsters. The creeper vines chased him, attempting to whip him as he escaped.

They struck him in the back, but Teselmar was just fast enough to outpace them. Battered and bruised, Teselmar had learned a valuable lesson about hunting monsters: Discretion was the better part of valor.

It was around 1 o clock PM when Teselmar stopped walking, finding a shady spot to sit and rest. He would sit here, and recover his HP. He sighed, leaning back against the tree that cast a shadow over him. He checked his mini map; seemed like this area was safe, no one had encountered any monsters here at least. Time to think about what he could have done differently...

"So..." He said aloud, to no one in particular. He lay his head down so that he could look up at the tree's branches, dappled with afternoon sunlight. "What have we learned today, Martin? Tes-el-mar?" He mocked himself, drawing out the syllables of his screen name like a schoolyard taunt. "We learned that people with big mouths tend to bite off more than they can chew."

Teselmar sighed as he closed his eyes... just letting the world pass him by for a moment. Even with his eyes closed, he could see the HP bar in the top left hand corner of his vision. His health was slowly returning, and so was his energy. It was just a shame that he hadn't picked up any materials from all that effort. "Plus," he added to no one, "I wasted a potion. 5 HP away from re-enacting the movie Scanners. What a way to go." He sighed again, deeply, as he opened his eyes slightly. "It's a long road we've got ahead of us, you know that right?"

Teselmar stretched and got back up to his feet. "Welp," he said languidly, watching as his HP gauge refilled itself, "The moral of the story is: There's always a bigger bush." With that, Teselmar walked ruefully back to the City of Beginnings. He felt like he could use a hard-earned nap. Maybe his next grinding session would prove more fruitful.
